[libvirt-users] vol-info showing old disk size

Hi, I just resized the disk image of a virtual machine by following the recommended virt-resize procedure. The enlarged disk is working fine, and the size is correctly detected and used in the virtual machine. But "virsh vol-info /path/to/imagefile" still shows the old size and allocation. Is there a way to "fix" this, i.e. making virsh aware of the new size? Thanks. Marco

Morning, I have a KVM guest running Win 2012 with MS SQL 2012. In order to provide a quick method of restoring the service should the live server die, we've decided to clone it to a preserved state. Ideally, this clone should also be kept up to date and cloning should be done on a regular basis. Is there any reason not to do unattended cloning? As in, when I leave on a Friday afternoon, start a script to clone the guest and auto start the live guest? Thanks Adam King IT Systems Administrator

hello. I have an issue with libvirt-1.2.6 and qemu-2.1.1. As soon as i do: "savevm $domain" the domain ist gone. Console says "unable to connect to monitor". Libvirt.log says: qemu-system-x86_64: /var/tmp/portage/app- emulation/qemu-2.1.1/work/qemu-2.1.1/hw/net/virtio-net.c:1348: virtio_net_save: Assertion `!n->vhost_started' fail ed. Googling for this error leads to a barely related qemu-dev thread. Has someone else experiencing this behaviour? Uh. Almost forgot to mention. Going back to qemu-2.1.0 solves the issue. best regards t.

[libvirt-users] Using custom QEMU binaries with libvirt

Hi all, I compiled a custom version of QEMU 2.0.0 and I am having hard times to make it available to libvirt. Just to clarify, if I execute /usr/local/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 it does performs good. But when I put this very same path to <emulator> tag in a domain configutation, when i start the domain I get error: Failed to start domain vm1 error: internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor: libvirt: error : cannot execute binary /usr/local/bin/qemu-system-x86_64: Permission denied I tried setting +x permission to all the binaries in /usr/local/bin, disabling apparmor profile for libvirtd, creating and putting to complain a profile for /usr/local/bin/qemu-system-x86_64, creating a softlink to /usr/bin/kvm-spice to the custom binary and leaving <emulator> as default... At the end of http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/openstack/dev/40033 I found something about AppArmor, and enabling bios.bin reading somewhere, but I got a little confused here. The most disapointing thing here, is that using qemu 1.7 I could use my custom build, but apparently something changed with 2.0 (or with libvirt integration). Any ideas? Thanks!

[libvirt-users] VM status when guest poweroff

Hi， I tried QEMU on ARM/PPC platforms. If running poweroff command on guest, it should also shutoff the VM. But it shows the VM status still be 'running' instead of 'shutoff'. I guess it should be qemu issue, is it right? Best Regards, Olivia

Hi, I try to connect from virsh -c qemu:///session and it shows the VMs created by by that particular user (testuser). But when i try from root virsh -c qemu:///system i don't see the vms created by testuser. How do i make it appear in the root's virsh ie the vms created by testuser ? I need this because i need information for global VM statistics created by all users. Can someone help me regarding this ? Regards, Navin

[libvirt-users] Inconsistent behavior between x86_64 and ppc64 when creating guests with NUMA node placement

Hello all, I was recently trying out NUMA placement for my guests on both x86_64 and ppc64 machines. When booting a guest on the x86_64 machine, the following specs were valid (obviously, just notable excepts from the xml): <memory unit='KiB'>8388608</memory> <currentMemory unit='KiB'>8388608</currentMemory> <vcpu placement='static'>4</vcpu> ... <cpu> <topology sockets='4' cores='1' threads='1'/> <numa> <cell cpus='0-2' memory='6144'/> <cell cpus='3' memory='2048'/> </numa> </cpu> However, on ppc64 this causes the following error: error: Failed to create domain from sample_guest.xml error: internal error: early end of file from monitor: possible problem: 2014-09-11T18:44:25.502140Z qemu-system-ppc64: total memory for NUMA nodes (8388608) should equal RAM size (200000000) The 200000000 is actually 8192 MB in bytes and hexidecimal. This is apparently just an issue with the error message. The following specs work on ppc64: <cpu> <topology sockets='4' cores='1' threads='1'/> <numa> <cell cpus='0-2' memory='6291456'/> <cell cpus='3' memory='2097152'/> </numa> </cpu> Note that the memory for each cell is 6144*1024 and 2048*1024 respectively. The issue is that the memory size for each NUMA cell should be specified in KiB, not MB (http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#resPartition "|memory| specifies the node memory in kibibyte"). In short, it seems that specifying NUMA cell memory in MB works on x86_64 but not on ppc64. Does anyone have any insight to what's causing this, or if I'm misunderstanding something? I've run KVM based NTP servers inside vm's (2 as active:standby) and dozens of ntp clients inside vm's for over a year now and seen no adverse results. [libvirt-users] QEMU disk migration not using entire connection throughput

Hello everybody, I've been observing that, during the disk migration usign --copy-storage-inc, the data transfer hardly ever uses the entire available connection bandwidth (in my case 1 Gb/s), and the migration is at a non-constant speed. On the other hand, at the memory migration step, everything goes perfect. I am almost sure that this is not a nard disk throughput limitation, because a 'scp' command between the two same machines performs perfectly right. Is libvirt (or maybe QEMU?) doing some extra work that may cause slowlyness? Thanks!

Hi, I have installed libvirt via Homebrew = compiled from source <https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew/blob/master/Library/Formula/libvirt.rb> . Then I wanted to install *ruby-libvirt* gem install ruby-libvirt and end up with this error: /usr/local/Cellar/ruby/2.1.2_3/bin/ruby extconf.rb *** extconf.rb failed *** Could not create Makefile due to some reason, probably lack of necessary libraries and/or headers. Check the mkmf.log file for more details. You may need configuration options. Provided configuration options: --with-opt-dir --with-opt-include --without-opt-include=${opt-dir}/include --with-opt-lib --without-opt-lib=${opt-dir}/lib --with-make-prog --without-make-prog --srcdir=. --curdir --ruby=/usr/local/Cellar/ruby/2.1.2_3/bin/ruby --with-libvirt-include --without-libvirt-include --with-libvirt-lib --without-libvirt-lib --with-libvirt-config --without-libvirt-config --with-pkg-config --without-pkg-config extconf.rb:73:in `<main>': libvirt library not found in default locations (RuntimeError) extconf failed, exit code 1 so then I passed the locations of *include* & *lib* directories as the configuration options: gem install ruby-libvirt -- --with-libvirt-include=/usr/local/Cellar/libvirt/1.2.7/include --with-libvirt-lib=/usr/local/Cellar/libvirt/1.2.7/lib which *worked*, but it's not very clean and effective solution, especially if you have *ruby-libvirt* as a requirement in your Gemfile and you need to install it via Bundler. I have been beating my head against a wall attempting to get virsh to migrate a simple VM from one host to another. I have two systems running Ubuntu 14.04 with libvirt 1.2.2. Yes, they are bridged. Non-shared storage. Modest guest VM that only requires 100G of disk space; there is far more available. [libvirt-users] How to have a directory and its subdirectories as a storage pool

Hi, I would like to use btrfs subvolumes as storage place for VM images to use snapshots. Unfortunately, this does not seem to work in virt-manager at least since the "filesystem directory" storage pool type does not allow me to descend into subdirectories. Is there a trick to do this? [libvirt-users] Network reconfiguration glitch after migration

Hello everyone, I have the following scenario: * 2 host machines (H1 and H2) running VMs. I execute migrations (QEMU) from one host to the other, and so on. The migrations are done in a dedicated LAN (eth1 in both hosts) while regular department LAN runs on eth0 * 1 computer (my desktop computer) also connected to this common LAN on eth0. The VMs have a Python script sending UDP packets to my desktop computer (which has the server part of the Python script), every 250 ms, to be able to mesure downtime and other stuff. Once I run a live migration from H1 to H2, I would expect the downtime to be in the order of ms, or maybe a few seconds, but it takes something like 10 to 20 seconds on average for the packets to resume arriving at my computer. One could think about the network reconfiguration delay, or other reasons, but here comes the tricky part: If I have a ping running on the destination host to the internal IP that the VM is supposed to have once the migration is done, the UDP packets resume just a few ms after the migration os done. Is like: if the VM only has outgoing connections, it takes a lot of time to resume its operation, but if it has some incoming connection, the network resumes very quick. I know it may sound wierd, but maybe there is a clear reason for this issue. Any ideas? Thank you!

[libvirt-users] libvirt ignores ip setting when creating a xen domU?

Hi, I'm currently writing a script to avoid ip conflict but I couldn't get ip address from xenstore when I create a guest using libvirt with libxl connector. With 'xl create' command, it works everything fine, but not with libvirt. So I dug into the source code, I couldn't find any code for declaring x_nic->ip field in libxlMakeNic(). Or I just created XML file the wrong way? Here is a part of domain XML: <interface type="bridge"> <mac address="00:16:3e:51:6b:19" /> <protocol family="ipv4"> <ip address="10.0.1.119" prefix="24" /> <route gateway="10.0.1.1"/> </protocol> <source bridge="virbr0" /> </interface> Hope someone can help me out. - Larry
