[libvirt-users] Guests using more ram than specified

Hi, today I noticed that one of my HVs started swapping aggressively and noticed that the two guests running on it use quite a bit more ram than I assigned to them. They respectively were assigned 124G and 60G with the idea that the 192G system then has 8G for other purposes. In top I see the VMs using about 128G and 64G which means there is nothing left for the system. This is on a CentOS 7 system. Any ideas what causes this or how I can calculate the actual maximum amount of RAM I can assign to the guests on a HV without overcommitting RAM? Regards, Dennis

Hi, My nova-compute nodes was running libvirt 0.9.13 and QEMU 1.0, after libvirt was upgraded to 1.2.2, the VMs launched by libvirt 0.9.13 can't attach volume any more, i.e. "nova volume-attach <vm-uuid> <volume-uuid>" doesn't work. But before the libvirt upgrade, the same VM can attach volume disk. I did some debuging and find that, it failed in QEMU when try to open the volume device, and the return errno is EPERM. Hello. I am new libvirt user. I downloaded and compile the source code with default configuration. I had a lot of trouble before finally found out that python bindings is now a separated package. However the web site still states that python binding is directly supported, and that install extra binding package when libvirt is installed as a binary package. [libvirt-users] polkit ACL for remotely changing a spice console password

I'm working on some infrastructure which allows a remote password reset (with expiry) of a spice console running on a remote libvirtd/qemu-kvm. I currently have GSSAPI over tcp working and can set the password - but I can also do everything else - the default policy is still in place, and once authenticated, anything goes. I'm setting the password using a command like this: virsh --connect qemu+tcp://remote.example.org/system qemu-monitor-command --hmp mydomain 'set_password spice mynewpassword123 disconnect' I've looked at the documentation for ACLs but I can't see anything that covers qemu-monitor-command, and specifically "set_password". The other way to set passwords is to update the domain settings using an XML fragment, but I'm not clear on the exact semantics on how to do that (do you have to extract the xml fragment first?) AND I can't find how that's covered in ACL documentation either. Some idea? Any pointers would be much appreciated. Ideally, I'd like to say "user x can update password for domain y" and that's the only thing that can be modified for that user. -- Thanks, David Mansfield Cobite, INC.

My question is this: If you have an ongoing blockcopy (drive-mirror) of a running transient VM, and the VM kernel panics, can you restart the VM without interrupting the ongoing blockcopy? A virsh reboot won't work since if the VM is kernel panicked, its not going to respond to ACPI requests.

Hi Everyone, I'm trying to start a domain that will discard all changes to its disks on shutdown. I've tried adding <transient/> to the disk declarations in the definition xml but this results in a "not supported" error message on define. Is there a way to do this without creating and rolling back snapshots? Thanks, Jason

Hello Folks, I am looking for ideas on how to create 1000 DOT1X sessions generated from a Linux BOX. DOT1X is a name for EAP packets that travel in an Ethernet environment and is used to transport authentication information before a PC will get access to the network, it is based on RFC-3748. Having this in mind a virtual interface will need a MAC address and an eventually IP (I want to stress out that for EAP over LAN, DOT1X, there is need for L2 virtual interface). One DOT1X session can be easily generated using network manager (nmcli) on a physical NIC. For network manager this is a session that may include many parameters used to form the connection, in my case used for DOT1X authentication. I am looking for a solution on how to create 1000 DOT1X sessions/connections using Linux virtual interfaces and one physical NIC. An idea would be to use a virtual bridge and attach to it a physical interface. After that, create virtual interfaces that will be connected to the bridge. In this case the bridge will relay packets between physical and virtual interfaces. Looking on this alias I understood from Michal Privoznik that above is feasible. Questions 1.Is it possible to create virtual interfaces that will be further managed by the NETWORK MANAGER ? 2.What would be the exact steps and commands to generate these interfaces having fresh OS installed ? I have tried creating vNICs using "virsh" using bellow syntax but it will not start it and I am still not sure if in the end can be managed by the NETWORK MANAGER: virsh iface-define XML_LOCATION virsh iface-list ---> this will list interfaces created virsh iface-start INTERFACE_DEFINED_ABOVE Thanks in advance. Hi, I'm trying to resize a 15GB LVM root partition on a fedora20 server with a fedora20 guest and I'm having a problem. Is this supported on fedora20? Hello. I'm seeing this error while doing a backup of a VM. + virsh blockcommit kaltura vda --active --verbose --pivot Block Commit: [100 %]error: failed to pivot job for disk vda error: internal error: unable to execute QEMU command 'block-job-complete': The active block job for device 'drive-virtio-disk0' cannot be completed I'm on qemu 2.2.0 and libvirt-1.2.11. Does someone else see this error? [libvirt-users] Libvirt to return the ip address instead of the hostname during migration

Hi all, We are working on nova live-migration using Ceph and trying to work around the problem where vm migration fails if name resolution is not enabled in a cluster. See the link, https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/ht… We have managed to work around this by setting the flag to include “VIR_MIGRATE_TUNNELLED”. However, it is noticebaly slower than non tunnelled. We were hoping that setting the listen_addr would get libvirt to return the listen_addr rather than the hostname but virGetHostname in libvirt/src/util/virutil.c doesn’t have access to the config structure. I was wondering if libvirt can be patched in a way to return the ip address of the destination instead of the hostname during migration? Regards, Yagmur Akbulut

[libvirt-users] Using virsh blockcopy -- what's it supposed to accomplish?

I am experimenting with the blockcopy command, and after figuring out how to integrate qemu-nbd, nbd-client and dumpxml/undefine/blockcopy/define/et. al. I have one remaining question: What's the point? The "replication" disk file is not, from what I can ascertain, bootable. I expect this operation to create a pristine copy of my source qcow2 file (at a given point in time) which implies that I can swap that copy in and use it just like the original. Neither using --finish nor --pivot (both appear successful) give me a mirror that seems to serve any purpose. It seems especially pointless if I use --pivot because anything that happens after the pivot ends up lost if I don't actually have a usable qcow2 file. I find lots of discussion online about getting the steps to work, but as yet find nothing about using the resulting file. I would like to my copy to be off-system, and was hoping to use the NBD interface to accomplish that. So I tried this (a variant of the above), working on the same system because it's easier: qemu-img create -f qcow2 /tmp/dsk.test.qcow2 qemu-nbd -f qcow2 -p11112 /tmp/dsk.test.qcow2 nbd-client localhost 11112 /dev/nbd2 virsh dumpxml my_domain > my_domain.xml virsh undefine my_domain virsh blockcopy --domain my_domain --wait --verbose --finish virsh define my_domain.xml nbd-client -d /dev/nbd2 and the qemu-nbd process exits, as I wish. I presume at this point that the new file has integrity. I can take the qcow2 file that belongs to the domain and serve it up via NBD: qemu-nbd --partition=1 -p11112 /path/to/my/qcow2/file.qcow2 nbd-client localhost 11112 /dev/nbd2 mount /dev/nbd2 -oloop /mnt/foo and lo! in /mnt/foo I found my root filesytem. Seems perfectly reasonable. Hi Laine, Sorry to disturb you. It seemed this issue had been fixed in libvirt-1.2.2/libnl-3.2.22/linux-3.12. But we still got the error on PowerPC platform. I'll appreciate if you could give any suggestion. We are not sure if any netlink implementation in kernel space is missed. The scenario is a little complicated. Hi there, I met one problem that guest fail to boot up when Selinux is enabled with guest storage based on ceph. However, I can boot the guest with qemu directly. I also can boot it up with Selinux disabled. Not sure it is a libvirt bug or wrong use case. 1. [libvirt-users] trying to get "pages" output in virsh capabilities

When running "virsh capabilities" one of my systems shows a couple entries for "pages" under host/cpu. (One for 4KB, one for 2MB.) On my other system I'm missing the "pages" entries. Is there something that I need to configure, or is this a libvirt version issue, or what? The system with the "pages" entries is running 1.2.9, while the system without them is running 1.2.2. Hi, In RHEL5/6 we have been able to create bridges on our hyper-visor of a number of vlans (eg. em1 -> em1.483 -> br483) We would be able to see this br483 in the virt-manager drop down network choice at the end of creating a new host. On RHEL7 we are not using NetworkManager per the documentation[0] for bridges (and because it is not worth it). So a RHEL7 virt-manager (0.10.0) when connected to a libvirtd for RHEL6 (0.10.2) shows the bridge but when connected to a libvirtd for RHEL7 (1.1.1) it does not. So it isn't a virt-manager problem as it seems to be a difference in the backend libvirtd. You are able to manually specify the bridge device and it does work though. The `iface-dumpxml br483` command in virsh on RHEL6 and RHEL7 both are identical. I guess the question how does a libvirt client like virt-manager determine a iface is a usable bridge? Please can anyone enlighten me as to why linux qemu-kvm always creates the console on my terminal, when I am trying to direct all of its input and output to a pipe ? I have created : $ mkfifo /tmp/el6x32{.in,.out,.monitor} and use the command: $ /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm -M rhel6.4.0 -cpu n270 -smp 1 \ -hda /home/rpmbuild/OEL6/img/OEL6_32.img \ -kernel /home/rpmbuild/OEL6/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.39-400.215.14.el6uek.i686 \ -initrd /home/rpmbuild/OEL6/boot/initramfs 2.6.39-400.215.14.el6uek.i686.img \ -append 'root=/dev/sda rw selinux=0 enforcing=0 console=0' \ -m 2048 -k en-gb -nographic -vga none -vnc none -enable-kvm \ -chardev pipe,id=0,path=/tmp/el6x32 -monitor pipe:/tmp/el6x32.monitor But this ends up with the kernel's console on qemu-kvm's STDIO . I actually want the console to be redirected to take input from /tmp/el6x32.in and direct output to /tmp/el6x32.out - I thought that was what the above '-chardev pipe,id=0,path=/tmp/el6x32' should do if kernel boot params 'console=0' is also supplied ? I am using Libvirt virsh command by vmware esx created a virtual host, has been unable to create success. Hi, I would like to allow a user (non-root) to access the console of his VM (he's got root access on it). Using sudo doesn't seem to work: /bin/virsh console vm error: failed to get domain 'vm' error: Domain not found: no domain with matching name 'vm' If I assign suid to virsh, I get: 'error: Failed to initialize libvirt' I don't see any information on Internet about this. What is the procedure to follow to get this result (QEMU conf, libvirt conf, etc)? Thank you in advance.
