[libvirt-users] Where are libvirt's USB autroredirection settings stored?

For security reasons Debian's libvirt maintainer has opted to disable the default behavior of autoredirecting any newly attached USB device to a running VM with SPICE USB redirection ports added. I tried looking for an obvious setting in virt-manager's menus to change this but can't see anything. What libvirt/virt-manager configuration file is this setting stored so I can change it on demand?

[libvirt-users] 100% CPU when using nested virtualization

Hi all, I got a new laptop recently and what worked before no longer works (Fedora 23 on the laptops in both cases)... I'm trying to get nested virtualization to work because I use the VMs on the laptop to simulate an HA cluster that itself hosts VMs. I don't care much at all about the performance of the nested VM, it's just there so that I can work on the cluster's code. When I try to provision a VM inside a VM (the host VM is CentOS/RHEL 6.7), the CPU load spikes to such a high degree that my ssh session times out after a while. The VM appears in libvirtd (as viewed by virt-manager on another machine), but the VM itself never starts. In one case, the VM host remained somewhat functional and killing kvm/qemu/libvirtd didn't reduce the CPU load. The main difference between the setups is that the older laptop had a Sandy bridge(? Thinkpad W530) and the new laptop is a Broadwell (Thinkpad P70). I've tried to loading vhost_net without much luck. I have, of course, enabled nesting on the actual hardware: cat /sys/module/kvm_intel/parameters/nested Y Any tips on how to debug? I am using libvirt 1.2.20. I noticed that when running some VMs (CentOS ) with 2G ram, 2CPUs each for some reason they go from 'state=running' to 'state=paused'; and they can't be restarted. They are un-usable. When this happens I get the following in dmesg output: [ 46.595265] EPT: Misconfiguration. [libvirt-users] Zombie processes being created when console buffer is full

We have been researching stuck zombie processes in our libvirt lxc containers. What we found was: 1) Each zombie’s parent was pid 1. init which symlinks to systemd. 2) In some cases, the zombies were launched by systemd, in others the zombie was inherited. 3) While the child is in the zombie state, the parent process (systemd) /proc/1/status shows no pending signals. 4) Attaching gdb to systemd, there was 1 thread and it was waiting in write() and the file being written was /dev/console. This write() to the console never returns. We operated under the assumption that systemd's SIGCHLD handler sets a bit and a foreground thread (the only thread) would see that child processes needed reaping. While the single thread is stuck in write(), the reaping never takes place. So why is write() blocking? The answer seems to be that there is nothing draining the console and eventually it blocks write() when its buffers become full. When we attached to the container's console, the buffer is cleared allowing systemd’s write() to return. The zombies are then reaped and everything goes back to normal. Our “solution” was more of a workaround. systemd was altered to log errors/warnings/etc to /dev/null instead of /dev/console. This prevented the problem, only in that the console buffer was unlikely to get filled up since systemd generally is the only then that writes to it. This is definitely a hack though. This may be a bug in the libvirt container library (you can't expect something to periodically connect to a container's console to empty it out). We suspect there may also be a configuration issue in our containers with regards to the console. Has anyone else observed this problem? I think I've hit the same problem that Predrag reported in http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.emulators.libvirt.user/8825. I am building a custom Linux image which includes KVM and will be installed on multiple machines. By default when installing libvirt you get a 'default network' which adds a 'vrbr0'. I found several tutorials online about removing this 'virbr0' but I would like to not have it in the first place. I am compiling libvirt from source so I would think there is some compile time option or some configuration file I need to change for the default network not to be included. Thanks for your help! Background: ---------- I'm trying to debug a two-node pacemaker/corosync cluster where I want to be able to do live migration of KVM/qemu VMs. Storage is backed via dual-primary DRBD (yes, fencing is in place). When moving the VM between nodes via 'pcs resource move RES NODENAME', the live migration fails although pacemaker will shut down the VM and restart it on the other node. For the purpose of diagnosing things, on both nodes I've put SELinux into permissive mode and disabled firewalld. Interesting Bit: --------------- Debugging a bit further, I put the VM into an unmanaged state and then try with virsh, from the node currently running the VM: [root@node1 ~]# virsh migrate --live --verbose testvm qemu+ssh://node2/system error: internal error: Attempt to migrate guest to the same host node1.example.tld A quick google points toward uuid problems, however the two nodes are, afaict, working with different UUIDs. (Substantiating info shown toward the end.) I thought that since `hostname` only returns the node name and not the FQDN that perhaps there was internal qemu confusion about using the short node name vs FQDN. However fully qualifying it made no difference: [root@node1 ~]# virsh migrate --live --verbose testvm qemu+ssh://node2.example.tld/system error: internal error: Attempt to migrate guest to the same host node1.example.tld Running virsh with a debug level of 1 doesn't reveal anything interesting that I can see. Running libvirtd at that level shows that node2 is seeing node1.example.tld in the emitted XML in qemuMigrationPrepareDirect. I'm assuming that means the wrong node has been calculated somewhere prior to that. At this point I'm grasping at straws and looking for ideas. Does anyone have a clue-bat? [libvirt-users] How to test if a console session is active?

I use libvirt to manage a container based environment. Is there an efficient method for testing if someone has a console session open for a given container? The approach I'm using at the moment is to use lsof and check if there is an entry for the container's console pts device. For example, I can determine a container's console device from its xml definition: # virsh dumpxml vm-00|grep -A 4 pty <console type='pty' tty='/dev/pts/3'> <source path='/dev/pts/3'/> <target type='lxc' port='0'/> <alias name='console0'/> </console> Once I have pts device, I can do something like # if lsof /dev/pts/3; then echo "Container vm-00 has an active console session"; fi This all works fine but we've found that lsof is very expensive. Is there a more efficient means to make this active console check? Peter

Hello everyone, Laine Stump over at OFTC #virt was kind enough to point me to this email address. I am trying to run a LXC OS container with virt-manager and found out, that I need to create the rootfs with LXC/LXD and then point virt-manager to the rootfs location. Following is the output on RHEL 6.6 # dommemstat 1 actual 16777216 rss 16890372 # dommemstat 2 actual 16777216 rss 16460516 I found following article on Redhat which suggests that this is normal/expected? https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2017943 Now we use following formula to calculate the memory utilization. mem_util = (rss/actual)*100 now this gives more that 100% as the result. We use the libvirt library to call the virDomainMemoryStats. (which is the same used by the "virsh dommemstat" command) If we can't use the RSS as the "used memory", what else should be used to calculate the same? What is the ideal approach to report memory utilization of guest from the KVM host?

Hi, I've installed qemu 2.5 through the package manager. There is a bug which blocks making an external snapshot for the second time. A fix is released: https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2016-01/msg06163.html I thought, why not download the source, apply the patch, build + make and then copy qemu-system-x86_64 to the /usr/bin/ folder..... But if I do 'virsh start my_vm', I get these errors: fout: internal error: early end of file from monitor, possible problem: warning: host doesn't support requested feature: CPUID.80000001H:ECX.svm [bit 2] warning: host doesn't support requested feature: CPUID.80000001H:ECX.svm [bit 2] qemu: could not load PC BIOS 'bios-256k.bin' First: What can I do about the 'host doesn't support requested feature'? Hello, We're interested in mirroring traffic from a host's guests to another host's guest. We've been able to achieve that on the same host; redirecting traffic from the host's bridge interface (VLAN) to one of the guest's in the same host by using the tc command. But, when it comes to traffic from one host to the other, we haven't been able to pull it through. Please, check out this image: http://ctrlv.in/720433 In this case, we are able to mirror the traffic from host11 into the Ubuntu guest; but not the traffic from host10 or host9 into the Ubuntu guest on host11. [libvirt-users] Convincing libvirt to create a bridge device?

I was hoping that I could delegate creation of bridge devices to libvirt for address-less bridges, in order to not have to deal with the various ways distributions handle persistent network configuration, but while this creates a libvirt network... <network> <name>provision</name> <forward mode='bridge'/> <bridge name='brprov'/> </network> ...it doesn't actually create the bridge. Configuring the bridge using either <forward mode="route"/> or <forward mode="nat"/> *will* create the bridge device, but both of these require assigning an address to the bridge which means I have to suddenly worry about IPAM and conflicts with local networks. I look at the various interface-related commands, and there is an "iface-bridge" command but this requires a physical interface. Hi. Since the update to libvirt-1.3.2, virsh keeps disconnecting from qemu:///session. Weirdly enough, qemu:///session works fine for root, and qemu:///system works for both the user and the root. With the same configuration(tarball with files from /etc/libvirt attached), libvirt-1.3.1 works without problems. Hi, with recent guest installs (both centos 5 and 7) on centos 7 hosts I seem to have to disable checksum offloading using "ethtool -K eth0 tx off" in order to allow traffic to flow a specific route. Basically the guest is installed with IP 192.168.21.10 and a default gateway of 192.168.21.254. Up until that point I can ssh into the system normally. There exists an OpenVPN System with the IP 192.168.21.1 that choses client IP's for the vpn connections from the pool 192.168.20.0/24. In order to pass the reponses back to the OpenVPN system I installed the route "192.168.20.0/24 via 192.168.21.1 dev eth0". When I now ping the IP 192.168.21.10 through the VPN connection this works fine but when I try to ssh into that system the connection just hangs. Looking at a tcpdump I noticed that the checksum for the packets weren't quite right so I issued a "ethtool -K eth0 tx off" and suddenly everything worked as expected. What is strange here is that I'm seeing this with both CentOS 5 and CentOS 7 guests and only when dealing with th routed traffic and not the regular one. Does anyone have an idea what is going on here? Could this be an issue with the virtio driver? Regards, Dennis

I was interested in using 'virsh vol-upload' and 'virsh vol-download', rather than mucking about directly with the filesystem. Hi. I am running virtualbox 4.3 on Mac OS X 10.11.12 and libvirtd 1.3.1 (installed with brew). I want to control the virtual machines via virsh. On libvirtd, I enabled tcp mode, removed all the authentication etc.. It's a development environment, so no worries here. It allows me to make a call such as: virsh –c vbox+tcp://172.30.5.51/session list —all 172.30.5.51 being my Mac IP address. [libvirt-users] Configuring default network/storage for qemu:///session

Hi libvirt-user, If I run (as a normal user): virsh -c qemu:///session net-list --all virsh -c qemu:///session pool-list --all I see a default network and a default pool. And indeed, these appear in the persistent configuration. It seems these are created the first time libvirtd is (auto)started in qemu:///session mode. Is it possible to configure the attributes of the default network and default pool that are created? This is to provide configuration for newly created users. Normally I would just put some default configuration in /etc/skel. But it seems that a UUID element needs to be present in the network and pool configuration. And so for my configuration to be correct I either need to wrap add some special sauce to adduser that generates several UUIDs and puts them in the configuration, or just generate the UUIDs in advance and let them be copied to all users. Currently I'm taking the second option, so all users have the same UUID for their default network and pool. I don't know if that might hurt me in the future, but it certainly seems distasteful. Hello List, I'm trying to get libvirt to work on slackware64-current (slackware64-14.2 beta) and while it compiles just fine, it refuses to run because of an undefined symbol: 2016-03-01 20:09:26.822+0000: 27849: error : virDriverLoadModule:73 : failed to load module /usr/lib64/libvirt/connection-driver/libvirt_driver_storage.so /usr/lib64/../lib64/libfl.so.2: undefined symbol: yylex I'm not really doing anything odd, here is my configure options in my package building script: ./configure \ --prefix=/usr \ --libdir=/usr/lib64 \ --bindir=/usr/sbin \ --sbindir=/usr/sbin \ --sysconfdir=/etc \ --localstatedir=/var \ --mandir=/usr/man \ --docdir=/usr/doc/libvirt-1.3.3 \ --enable-static=no \ --enable-shared=yes \ --with-yajl \ --with-python=/usr \ --with-qemu-group=users \ --with-init-script=none \ --with-storage-iscsi Looks like the old slackware64-14.1 had flex compiled statically and the new version is an SO, so I figure that's why this didn't happen on the older slackware. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Hi! I'm testing the live migration on libvirt + KVM, the VMs are using non-shared local storage only. If I run a live migration with --copy-storage-full, the final disk file on the remote host after the migration has a full blown size of the specified value (10G) in my case, instead of the few MB on the source host before the migration. Hi, i'd like to establish a HA-Cluster with two nodes. My services will run inside vm's, the vm's are stored on a FC SAN, so every host has access to the vm's. But how can i keep the config files (xml-files under /etc/libvirt/qemu) synchronised ? Is there a possibility to store the config files somewhere else ? E.g. a partitition with ocfs2 on the SAN ? If not, what would you do ? Otherweise i'm thinking of a cron-job who synchronises the file each minute with rsync. Its MAC-Address is: '52:54:00:37:92:03'. I also see that MAC when i edit the config via virsh. But when i boot that vm, it has a nic with another MAC: '52:54:00:37:92:B2' ??? lspci shows me just one nic in the vm. This MAC-Address is also visible in the Virtual Machine Manager.
