[libvirt-users] How to achieve higher priority of a process in a lxc on CentOS machine

Dear all, I use libvirt lxc to host a real-time application with priority of -50. The native OS is fedora21 and lxc is also fedora21. Everything works fine. Linux "top" command shows the priority is -50). Then I use Openstack to manage lxc. The native compute node OS is CentOS7.2. and the lxc is fedora. After the real-time application is started in the lxc. top command on the native machine sees the real-time application with priority of 20, which is not what I expect. If lxc is Ubuntu, the priority of real-time application is also 20. Can anybody help me on this? Cheng Wang

[libvirt-users] Trouble moving OVMF guest to new host

Hello, I recently had to reinstall my operating system on my computer. I made a backup of the entire partition beforehand onto an external drive. Now I am trying to import a VM from that backup onto the newly installed system. What I've done so far: - copied over the qcow2 disk image - copied over the XML config file - copied over the OVMF files under /usr/share/edk2.git/ovmf-x64/ I am getting this error whenever I try to boot the VM: Error starting domain: operation failed: unable to find any master var store for loader: /usr/share/edk2.git/ovmf-x64/OVMF_CODE-pure-efi.fd The file /usr/share/edk2.git/ovmf-x64/OVMF_CODE-pure-efi.fd does exist. [libvirt-users] accessing USB as storage device through lxc container.

Hi all, I am not able to access USB as storage device in the lxc container. Having tried to pass the usb device with the product and vendor id, not able to see the device mounted in the lxc file system. However, they are seen as char devices in the container at the location. There is no issue of ACL, as the capabilities restrictions have been dropped. Has anyone successfully mounted the storage device in the libvirt. Having gone through the libvirt documentation, couldnt find further information of enabling the usb as storage device. Any pointers towards that would be useful. [libvirt-users] Real time threads don't work in libvirt containers under CentOS 7.3

We've been using libvirt based containers under CentOS 7 and everything has been working fine. One application we run in our containers is ctdb, which uses SCHED_FIFO (real time) threads. This has been working without problems until our recent upgrade to CentOS 7.3. For some reason, ctdb is no longer able to create real time threads, and I've tried a simple program myself that confirms this. The same program works fine on the hypervisor so I know the kernel supports real time. Does anyone know what may have changed in CentOS 7.3 that breaks real time threads in libvirt containers? This is the simple test program I created to verify the real time threads are failing. [libvirt-users] Communicating between libvirt contains on separate hosts

I have a group of CentOS 7.2 servers running as VMs under VMware's ESXi 6.0. These all reside on the same subnet and we have no problem communicating between the different virtual servers. In addition, each of these servers run a number of libvirt-based LXC containers, also based on CentOS 7.2. The hosts can communicate with their containers without issues and the containers on a given server can communicate with each other. However, containers hosted on two different servers cannot communicate with each other or with other servers. If we duplicate this setup using KVM based VMs instead of ESXi VMs everything works fine--there is no problem communicating between LXC containers regardless of which VM hosts them. I assume this is not a libvirt issue but if anyone has encountered this issue in running libvirt containers under a VMware environment and has found a solution, I'd appreciate hearing from you. [libvirt-users] How to pin an libvirt lxc to a specific physical CPU core in openstack?

Dear all, In my applications, the real-time performance is very important, so I used 4 containers, with only one application running in each container and a physical CPU core is only dedicated to one lxc. and I must know which container is hosted by which CPU core. That is, I need to pin a specific lxc to a specific CPU core. I can achieve this in a native linux system by the following xml script (to pin a libvirt lxc to core #3 of a machine). It works fine. <vcpu placement='static' cpuset='3'>1</vcpu> Now I want to realize this on openstack platform, I carefully read the instruction on CPU pinning in nova and found that openstack flavor can only support pinning an lxc(instance) onto a set of CPU cores. I cannot allocate a specific pCPU to an lxc. After the lxc is started, "dumpxml" only shows the following statement, I even don't know to which CPU core the lxc is pinned. <vcpu placement='static' >1</vcpu> I tried to edit the libvirt.xml for the lxc which locates at nova/instances/#INSTANCE ID#/libvirt.xml and manually inserted cpuset='3', but this didn't take effect. After the lxc is restarted, the libvirt.xml is recovered and the modification was not there anymore. I googled the question on Internet, but no solution was found. I hope the libvirt people can help me on this. Thank you in advance. Cheng

Hi, I am using Libvirt (1.2.2) on RHEL6. I want to use the compatible virt-manager for it. When I tried 1.4.0 and 1.3.0 there is an insatllation issue on RHLE6 for gtk3. Is there any virt-manager version which works with 1.2.2 and RHLE6 too. Also what is the compatibility matrix for libvirt and virt-manager version. [libvirt-users] virt-p2v - Windows 10 guest hangs at boot after successful P2V

Hi all, I successfully virt-p2v'ed a Windows 10 laptop to my Centos 7.3 instance running KVM. However, on boot, the guest hangs. Is there a registry fix that is needed after the P2V is done? Hello, Since updating to libvirt 3.0 I am no longer able to create a virtual machine that is backed by LVM storage on my two Arch machines. Steps to reproduce in virt-manager (1.4.0-3): - create a new VM - choose import existing disk image - create a new logical volume when browsing to find the existing image path or select a lv that was manually created before. - click forward - click forward - click finish When using qcow2 storage, both virt-manager and my modules work fine. This was also working on previous versions of libvirt. I do not see any changes in compilation flags in the Arch packages. Is there anything I can do to help diagnose this issue? Greetings, Jeroen

Hello , It was working good working with kvm management tools using libvirt . virsh/virt-manager . ERROR unsupported configuration: guest and host CPU are not compatible: Host CPU does not provide required features: invpcid, erms, bmi2, smep, avx2, bmi1, fsgsbase, movbe, fma Domain installation does not appear to have been successful. I could not resolve this error . Finally i came across the post which say that libvirt cross verifies flags under CPU model present in /usr/share/libvirt/cpu_map.xml and cat /proc/cpuinfo . An yes the flag complained were not present in host proc/cpuinfo. Question 1: Is it really needed for Libvirt to do this check . AS KVM seems to allow support Haswell with native commands . Why libvirt is doing this check then ? As i was not sure where the problem lies and i was using libvirt 2.0.0 version i upgraded to 2.5.0 by compiling form source . But then i faces issue using virsh/virt-manager as seem it was not compatilble with upgarded version of libvirt. Now my system is little messed around libvirt . I did reinstall/reboot Quite many things not working . Question 2 : How can i restore original Libvirt 2.0.0 . br aki

Hi, is there way to create a network interface for a guest that just forwards packets tagged with a vlan id? Currrently I have a guest that has configured 10+ interfaces and for each one I add I have to create a new vlan interface and a bridge on the host which makes things rather cumbersome. What I'd like to have is just one interface eth0 in the guest and then be able to create eth0.2, eth0.3 in the guest and have the host just pass them through without interference. I found some guides on the internet but these always come with some limitation such as that if you have a vlan interface on the host like e.g. eth0.8 then the guest no longer receives packets in vlan 8 as there apparently get consumed by the host. Hi, We're repeatedly facing a live migration issue with Windows guests, would be great if someone could send their thoughts/suggestions/experience on how to further troubleshoot this. When we live migrate a Windows instance, it gets migrated (guest is running on the destination host), but it eventually internally hangs. From the Windows logs, the operating system has tried to shut down during the live migration. There is no info at all, even at debug level, in libvirt logs. I'm thinking to go with perf kvm or maybe kernel upgrade, but it might be I'm missing something obvious in Windows for this scenario? QEMU 2.0.0 Libvirtd 1.2.2 Host kernel version : 3.13.0-40-generic Windows version: Windows 2012 R2 Has RBD volumes attached driver name='qemu' type='raw' cache='writeback'/, but reproduced also without. hi all I've a few guest which work/run perfectly fine, I believe, except for autostart. Configuration of system, gluster and libvirt is pretty regular and not complex. [libvirt-users] Controlling the name of the 'tap0' device, in a bridged networking setup

Hi, I'm trying to control the name of the 'tap0' device that gets created as I start a domain that uses bridged networking. The XML specification of the domain contains the following configuration <interface type='bridge'> <source bridge='br0'/> </interface> The libvirt documentation ( http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementsNICSBridge) and other discussions online tell me that I just need to include the <target dev='desired_dev_name'/> tag in the XML specification of the domain under the <interface> tag. Unfortunately doing so appears to have no effect; the tun device created and 'enslaved' in the bridge is still called 'tap0'. Interestingly, I never get a tun device with a name prefixed by 'vnet' or 'vif' which, according to the documentation, is the default behaviour (?). The host is running CentOS 7, and virsh is used to start the domain. Best, Govert

Greetings, I am writing a code using libvirt API to migrate VM between two physical hosts *(QEMU/KVM) , *say some *n *number of times. *1)* I am using right now* virDomainPtr virDomainMigrate (.......) *and to calculate the total migration time I am using something like this: *clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC_RAW,&begin); * *migrate*(domainToMigrate,nodeToMigrate); *clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC_RAW,&end);* *Total Migration Time = end.tv_sec-begin.tv_sec* Is this correct way to calculate total migration time. And is there some way to calculate the downtime (not how to set it)? *2) *I am interested in identifying in particular other statistics of migration like : *Number of iterations in Pre Copy*, *Memory transferred in each iteration* etc. I was going through the API and found* virDomainJobInfo <http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt-domain.html#virDomainJobInfo> and virDomainGetJobStats <http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt-domain.html#virDomainGetJobStats> *functions.But how to use them is not very clear. As is already well documented, we find that we need cache='none' to support migration, otherwise there is the chance of a hang and/or failure to pivot. However we prefer the default of cache=writethrough when operating in production. Our practice is to 'shutdown' the VM completely make the change with virsh edit, then restart. Then we have to repeat the process to revert back once we migrate. Is it possible to change that function on the fly and avoid the shutdown/start process? Note: we have had inconsistent results with virsh edit first and then a reboot. A complete shutdown seems to be necessary, but I am hoping there is some other procedure available. In addition to that though, you need to make sure the kvm-intel kernel module in your host has the "nested=1" parameter set. eg in /etc/modprobe.d/kvm.conf you want options kvm_intel nested=1 If loaded correctly you should see # cat /sys/module/kvm_intel/parameters/nested Y if it says "N", then nested VMX will be disabled. Greetings, I was trying to understand the flow of Migration Code in libvirt and have few doubts: 1) libvirt talks to QEMU/KVM guests via QEMU API. So overall, in order to manage QEMU/KVM guests I can either use libvirt (or tools based on libvirt like virsh) or QEMU monitor. Is it so? 2) Since libvirt is Hypervisor neutral so actual migration algorithm(precopy or postcopy) is present in the hypervisor ,i.e. in case of QEMU it should be present in QEMU code base . I was going through the code starting from libvirt-domain api and not able to follow after virDomainMigrateVersion3Full(.....) . Kindly help. Thanks in advance. And sorry if that was too basic.
