[libvirt-users] Error deleting a volume

Hello group. This is my first post here so first of all I'd like to greet everybody reading this group. Secondly, I have a problem with libvirt used from a perl script. I would like to undefine a domain and afterwards delete the volume that had been attached to the domain as a disk. The volume is a qcow2 file and is placed in a 'dir' type pool. I succeed in undefining the domain but trying to delete a volume using $vol->delete() crashes the libvirtd. The script catches an exception: libvirt error code: 38, message: server closed connection and the init process echoes an entry to the log: init: libvirt-bin main process (6999) killed by ABRT signal When I try to list volumes afterwards using virsh, I see that not only the volume, but also the pool are missing. Moreover the pool that holds a backing storage for the qcow2 file is also missing. It seems that the delete operation actualy succeeds because the file gets deleted from disk as well. Fortunately the backing storage file is still present on the disk although its pool in virsh disappears. Has anybody come across a similar problem before? Any help is highly appreciated. [libvirt-users] Detecting Co-residency of VMs on KVM

I am doing an experiment which involves detecting co-resident VMs (testing if 2 VMs are on the same physical machine) on KVM. I have tried using cache covert channel, but this test does not work if the VMs are on different processors within the same host as the caches are not shared then. If I use the tools netperf and iperf to differentiate using network channels, I am not getting clear results. This is because the network is really good (10 Gbps). I believe there are better and more reliable ways for the same. Please suggest some of these. The idea is to find some resource (like memory, disk, etc) that is shared by the VMs and try to run some benchmarks that thrash this resource. Another idea is to take advantage of some optimization that kvm might be doing internally. Please help me. Thank you Shikhar Agarwal Undergraduate Senior IIT-Delhi

Hi! We're struggling to get device detaching to work reliably using Xen. We can reliably use the same code to manage devices using Libvirt+KVM without any problems. We've tested this on Xen with both CD-ROM and USB devices without success. See below for detailed descriptions. Thankful for any help! Using virsh we're able to use "virsh detach-disk deb hdc" to unmount the CD-ROM, but we need to be able to do this using the python API. We cannot find a corresponding call to detach-disk and we therefore have to rely on detach-device instead, right? Are there any flags we can use for detachDeviceFlags() to replicate the functionality of detach-disk? ---- Similarly for USB devices, we can mount them OK but not remove them using the corresponding call to detach-device. Calling detach-disk works, but again we need to find the corresponding call for this function using the python API. Greets, I have to research performance-issues of a W2003-VM within KVM. Right now it's a qcow2-image-file w/ default settings within libvirt (configured by vmm ...) My question: what caching to use? writeback/writethrough/etc ... what to use for data integrity while not getting ultraslow performance? Hi, I'm using libvirt 0.8.3. It looks like to me that when a QEMU domain is restored from save, the hook is called with the "stopped end -" arguments. I've also noticed that the domain description passed to the hook script doesn't contain the network device the host will be attached to (XPath: /domain/devices/interface/target/@dev). Hi, I am trying to operate the remote KVM host's virt-manager thru Terminal Server Client. This KVM hosts is CentOS6.0 and running KVM guest and xrdp is installed from "epel" repo. And I'm using fedora 14's Terminal Server Client. After I started Virtual Machine Manager and try to connect to the hypervisor, following error happened. Is there any way to resolve this error? I know that when I use VNC server , this error does not happened, but I want to use Terminal Server rather than VNC, because this doesn't need extra software for windows client PCs. -- Error snip -- Virtual Machine Manager Connection Failure Unable to open a connection to the libvirt management daemon. Hi all, I'm trying to use the libvirt event system in order to notify the VM status (VM boot, reboot, crash, etc.). I must use the java binding, so I exposed some calls not present in "Libvirt-java" jna interface: virEventRunDefaultImpl() virEventRegisterDefaultImpl() (and several costant). In my java source I tried to intercept the event, using the "Connection.domainEventRegisterAny( ... )" call , but the "answer" was: "this function is not supported by the connection driver: no event support". No errors issued on the virEventRunDefaultImpl and virEventRegisterDefaultImpl (moreover, both the calls return "0" ). I do not know the libvirt internals, so my question is : it is possible to call the libvirt events calls using java binding? Can you tell me the issues involved in this task? I'm thinking to build a native library and use jni or use jython as alternatives. Thanks, Maurizio

[libvirt-users] Unable to collect VM metrics for ESX using libvirt

Hi, I am trying to connect to a server running esx and collect system metrics like cpu usage, network and disk iops. I am able to establish the connection successfully and obtain VM information such as ids, domain names, config xml etc. But I am unable to collect statistics. I am using the python interface and if I do , conn=libvirt.openAuth(uri, auth, 0) dom-conn.lookupByID(id) // Where id is the domain id of the vms netstats=dom.interfaceStats(interface) gives an error libvirt.libvirtError: this function is not supported by the connection driver: virDomainInterfaceStats The same goes for block stats. For the cpu, I used, cpu=dom.info()[4] but, that always returns 0 (I thought it was cumulative and returns a huge value) I have used similar scripts with xen and kvm and it worked well. Can someone tell me what mistake I am doing or if the driver doesnt support these functions, is there any other way of getting the stats ?? Hi all, Hi have one computer hosting several VM, this particular server is in need of maintenance and has to be shutdown. In order to avoid disrupting the services provided by the VM I intended to migrate the VM to another computer. Computer 1 and 2 do not share any storage. So it is necessary to migrate not only the memory but also any data on the hard-drive. Both computers are running debian squeeze. Virsh is version 0.8.3. I issue this command on server one: sudo LIBVIRT_DEBUG=1 virsh migrate --live --copy-storage-all i00cn1011 qemu+ssh://user@computer2/session > debug.log 2>&1 On virt-manager on computer 1, the VM appears for a few moments as paused, and then disappears. On computer 1 I receive the error: Timed out during operation: cannot acquire state change lock Does anyone know what the problem may be and how to solve it? Hello, sorry for bother you again. I'm new to kvm and libvirt, that's why my next question is maybe some sort of noob question :) I have a headless server (no X at all, just ssh) and want to run some virtual machines on it. I have kvm etc. all set up. When doing something like virt-install --connect qemu:///system -n template -r 1024 --disk path=/data/vm/template.qcow2,format=qcow2 -c /data/vm/livedvd-amd64-multilib-2012.iso --os-type linux -v --network=bridge:br0 --virt-type kvm --arch x86_64 --graphics none the vm starts Starting install... Creating domain... Connected to domain template Escape character is ^] That's it, no more output. I see two threads running, each takes up 100% cpu. I tried to help myself via google and read a lot hints like "you need to setup your guest to get a serial console...", but that's not possible when running a fresh vm. All I want to do is getting some sort of console from the vm to start the installation with the given .iso file. Could someone lead me into the right direct? Hi everyone! I have the following setup: domain0 |-domU1 |-domU2 |-domU3 I am running this with libvirt on a XEN server. Right now the server is connected to our office network, but later it will be in a hosted environment. I need domU1 and domU3 to have a public IP, and all of the domUs and the dom0 should have an internal IP address to communicate with each other. So this is what I would like to achieve: domain0 192.168.122.1 |-domU1 192.168.122.2 192.168.1.45 (later this will be changed to the public IP) |-domU2 192.168.122.3 |-domU3 192.168.122.4 192.168.1.46 (this will also be changed to a public IP) On domain0 I have the following network interfaces: br0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 54:04:a6:66:c4:be inet addr:192.168.1.44 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 virbr0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 52:54:00:fe:88:0c inet addr:192.168.122.1 Bcast:192.168.122.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 This way everything is working fine, except that I don't want domain0 to have a public IP (which is 192.168.1.44 in this case) So is it possible somehow to setup br0 on domain0 without it having an IP address? Hi, I try to install a VMware VM via virsh with a vmxnet3 network card. Virsh sends me an error : "Insufficient video RAM. The maximum resolution of the virtual machine will be limited to 1176x885. To use the configured maximum resolution of 2560x1600, increase the amount of video RAM allocated to this virtual machine by setting svga.vramSize="16384000" in the virtual machine's configuration file." If I edit the VM settings (via vsphere) and set the Video card memory size to "Auto-dectect video setting" I get the error message : " The task was canceled by a user" when I try to start the VM. If I compare a .vmx generated by vsphere and .vmx generated by virsh I see more lines in the vsphere generated .vmx Is it normal ? Thanks .

Preallocation works so that when you create a 100GB image it takes up 100GB from the start. This helps performance because without preallocation the disk would only take up space of whatever is stored on it. So each time you add files the filesystem as to grow the image. With qcow2 the preallocation is just metadata. I've found that ls -lh will show the size correctly but something like "df -h" won't reflect the size of those images, nor will "du -h". - Trey

Hi all, When creating a new network: 1) Is there a way to disable automatic spawning of dnsmasq on network creation? I read that leaving out the <DHCP> section should accomplish this, but that is not what I am seeing. 2) Is there a way to disable automatic installation of iptables rules? 3) For that matter, what is the purpose of the default iptables rule set? If we run a single virtual machine on a host then the performance is very good but if more than one vm (with 1:1 provisioning) runs on same host the performance is very poor (specially in case of parallel programming). libvirt version: 0.9.2 qemu-kvm-0.14.1 We are using virtio module also. Hi, I have been asked to research and recommend a method to securely license guests on RHEL/KVM 6.2+ hosts. The guests will be running CentOS or RHEL (5.X or 6.2+). The primary driver to license the software is that we will be selling Telecommunications software in countries where it is common to pirate software. As such, we are worried about the software being purchased one time and then multiple instances of the software being used. We plan to use a USB security dongle (I hate that word!) of some kind. If we were running without virtualization, the solution is pretty straight forward. We would install the security dongle on the server and compile the licensing library which accessed the dongle into our code. We understand that this could be circumvented by a dedicated foe, but it would be reasonably secure. However, as soon as the licensed code is running in a guest, things get a lot more complicated. My first thought was that we could use PCI passthrough to map the USB controller to one guest. Unfortunately, they want to have multiple guests access the same security dongle concurrently. I could see using a bridge that is only on the host to allow the guests to communicate with the host which proxies the requests to the security device. However, it would be pretty easy to connect a network tunnel to the bridge which could allow guests at remote sites to access the security dongle and this would allow the licensed software to be replicated. Can anyone recommend a solution or partial solution to this issue? Any thoughts are welcome, David

Your management app should know which host is > currently running vm-23475; you shouldn't have to directly query > vm-23475 itself (besides, if you treat guests as untrusted code, you > wouldn't want to rely on any answer vm-23475 gave you in the first place). While I agree with you in principle, my impression is that people are not treating guests as untrusted code, but rather, almost exactly like physical hosts. Perhaps I haven't had the luxury of being in a virtual environment where people are doing things the way they were intended :) -- Paul

[libvirt-users] Can a VM tell what host it's on?

Is there a way internal to a KVM VM to know which host it's running on? It could send a command via ssh to virsh on a host, and learn from that whether the host currently has it running. But is there something within the VM itself which will reveal this? Thanks, Whit
