Hi,all,i am using libvirt to manage my vm,in these days i am testing the libvirt snapshot ,but meet some problem: the snapshot was created from this command: snapshot-create-as win7 --disk-only --diskspec vda,snapshot=external --diskspec hda,snapshot=no but when i tried to revert from the snapshot which created from the above command ,i got error below: virsh # snapshot-revert win7 1338041515 --force error: unsupported configuration: revert to external disk snapshot not supported yet version: virsh # version Compiled against library: libvir 0.9.4 Using library: libvir 0.9.4 Using API: QEMU 0.9.4 Running hypervisor: QEMU 1.0.93

Hi, Can anyone please help with the following: I have a running instance with interface <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='fa:16:3e:ba:a4:67'/> <source bridge='br100/> <target dev='vnet0'/> <model type='virtio'/> <filterref filter='nova-instance-instance-00000001-fa163ebaa467'/> <alias name='net0'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/> </interface> what I need is to clear network interface on the instance. I tried virsh update-device with following xml: <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='fa:16:3e:ba:a4:67'/> <source bridge='br100/> <model type='virtio'/> </interface> but this results in the following error: $ sudo virsh update-device 13 xml.xml --persistent --live --config error: Failed to update device from xml.xml error: End of file while reading data: Input/output error error: Failed to reconnect to the hypervisor and libvirt is restarted. Hello, Then everything is in the title, i would like to get the guest's serial console, the Windows one, Linux works perfectly at the moment. I don't find enough informations about that, so I'm asking myself : "Is that stupid or inconsistent ?". I know we can go trough 2 ssh access it but that's not really nice to do. My searches resulted in the use of EMS, I'm still trying this way but it seems it doesn't work. Any suggestions ? Kind regards Yoann Dandine.

However, I'll make it clearer. I know that the such events are caused by the hypervisor. Either directly or using tools such as Libvirt. Hi everyone, I have a server (ubuntu 14.04 lts) running KVM with a few guests (each with static IP addresses) which I manage using libvirt. This machine has a wired interface (br0 / p2p1) connecting to my internal network and a wireless interface using dhcp (ppp0) as a secondary direct connection to the internet. My goal is route all administration traffic for both the host and guests through the wired interface (br0); while routing the service traffic, and _only_ this traffic, through the ppp0 interface. For example: One vm is a webserver and I wish to route all traffic on ports 80 & 443 from ppp0 to that vm. Another vm is a mailserver and I wish to route all the imap & pop traffic from ppp0 to that vm. At the same time, I wish to be able to ssh in through the wired interface (p2p1) and route all system maintenance traffic through the wired interface as well. Additionally I wish to drop/reject incoming traffic on ppp0 which is not on these specified ports. Reading the libvirt documentation, I have found a section which very nearly describes my needs: http://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Networking#Forwarding_Incoming_Connections Unfortunately, I am unsure how to correcting modify the given examples to meet my specific needs. To begin with, the examples assume a static external IP, while mine is dynamic. I think I would like to refer to interface by name (ppp0) or perhaps create a secondary bridge (br1) with a static IP, the ppp0 included with "bridge_prts ppp0" command, and then refer to the static IP of the new bridge (br1). Next, I don't see the correct mechanism which I could configure such that all traffic coming in ppp0 which was not on the specified ports is rejected/dropped and all administrative traffic, originating from both the host and guests, is routed through the wired interface. I am assuming that this also should be done through libvirt/virsh and not directly through iptables. If it matters, the wired interface connects to a router running shorewall (and thus the server is in the "dmz" zone). The server itself is not running shorewall or any other similar things. The router is managing the primary connection to internet, which is distinct from the secondary wireless interface on the server, it is connecting to a different ISP. If anyone could give me some advice or point me to some additional or more relevant documentation/examples I would really, really appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi. I have a reference .vmdk (and .xml) reference VM. I need to instantiate multiple new VM’s from this, but changing various parameters: name, MAC address, network connections, cores, memory size, disk size and backing store, etc. and then start these new VM’s… all via ‘virsh’ et al from a script. What are the steps to do this? I was looking at the command help and some tutorials but apparently not the right ones. Thanks, -Philip

Hello, I am trying run a simple VM (qemu1.4.2) on RHEL 6.5 through libvirt (0.10). virsh create throws the error: *error: Failed to create domain from vm1.xml* *error: internal error process exited while connecting to monitor:* The libvirt log for VM shows: *libvir: error : cannot execute binary /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64: Permission denied* I am running VM as root and all disk images/ISOs required for VM are read/write/executable. -- Asadullah Hussain

I have been trying to get set of libvirtd system up and running. My PKI infrastructure involves a root CA and several intermediate CAs. I am trying to get the machines to trust each other across the different intermediate CAs. This is what I have so far: Libvirtd is starting and listening on tls port 16514 I have configured client/server certs/keys and it seems to be using all of these correctly. I have also configured the cacert.pem file (which has two certs in the chain). I have confirmed (recompiling with various debug statements) that the gnutls libraries are successfully loading both certs from the cacert.pem file. When I try to connect with openssl s_client -connect <host>:16514 I get something similar to this: --- Certificate chain 0 s:/CN=kvm999.example.com i:/C=US/ST=Utah/O=Qualtrics/OU=SRE/CN=intca1.example.com --- Server certificate -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- ... omitted for brevity -----END CERTIFICATE----- subject=/CN=kvm999.example.com issuer=/C=US/ST=Utah/O=Qualtrics/OU=SRE/CN=intca1.example.com --- Acceptable client certificate CA names /C=US/ST=Utah/O=Qualtrics/OU=SRE/CN=intca1.example.com /C=US/ST=Utah/O=Qualtrics/OU=SRE/CN=rootca.example.com --- The "Server certificate" and "Acceptable client certificate CA names" look right. The problem is that the certificate chain is just the single server cert and does not include the intermediate cert or root cert. As a result clients from other intermediate CAs fail to verify the libvirtd process. I have tried libvirtd 0.10.2 and 1.2.1 both on CentOS 6. Thanks. -- -Nathaniel Cook

Hi virt, im stumped... any help would be appreciated. I normally create my VMs like this: base="http://mirror.pnl.gov/fedora/linux/releases/20/Fedora/x86_64/os/" sudo virt-install --hvm --name $vm_name$i --ram 4000 \ --disk path=/VirtualMachines/$vm_name$i,size=30 \ --location $base -x "ks=http://xxx.os21.ks$kx" HOWEVER... I'm finding that my VMs dont boot after i restart the Host. My question is: Where is virt-install writing the boot disk to? I get a error message that the "boot failed" because the hard disk, is not a bootable disk. But I can't imagine where else to boot from ? Because I point my --location of the original boot to the source code repo itself.... ANY help would be appreciated thanks!

Hi, I'm new to libvirt so please bear with me. I am trying to set up a routed subnet on my laptop with libvirt, hoping it to be able to communicate with all servers in my nw. My laptop is on a subnet, 192.168.2.0/24, with a static ip, 192.168.2.27. I have "more or less" followed this guide for routed networks, https://www.berrange.com/posts/2009/12/13/routed-subnets-without-nat-for-li… The "more or less" part is that I have a Asus RT-N56U router with the static route set as in the guide and I'm not running wifi. With this setup I can reach, within the 192.168.200.0/24, all guests within 192.168.200.0/24, internet and the laptop but I can not reach any server on the laptop subnet. traceroute from guests to servers in the laptop subnet is only giving "stars" infinitely nmap from guests to services in the laptop subnet is saying "filtered" Obviously I've done something wrong but I can't find out what. I also may have misunderstood the meaning of routed network within libvirt. Please give me some advise to solve this problem. Hi! First post, kind of a noobie. I've been working with LXC and libvirt for a few months now. Trying to do some interesting things with containers and Android devices :D I'm running ubuntu 13.10 with LXC 1.0.1 and tried both libvirt 1.1.1 and 1.2.2 (backported from ubuntu-trusty), but with either version of libvirt am getting issues as soon as I try to get access to USB devices inside the container. Tracing down through the libvirt code it looks like it fails when calling `mknod`. It's clear that libvirt converts the product/vendor ids I specified in the domain definition file to the appropriate USB bus (/dev/bus/usb/002/003, verified by comparing against output of `usb-devices`). In a parallel effort, a colleague of mine set up a vanilla LXContainer on a new install of the same version of ubuntu, and successfully was able to communicate with the Android device from a container. The only configuration tweaks he made was make sure to whitelist the cgroup with the appropriate major/minor device number (associated with the Android device) inside the LXC configuration file. From there the container was able to appropriately create the device file as you attach/detach the Android device. Hopefully someone can shed some light, and appreciate your patience with me as I am learning a lot of this stuff as I go :) Thanks in advance for any help! Fil

hi, i am trying to blockcommit a external qcow2 snapshot back into its raw backing file like: sudo virsh blockcommit myDomainName vda --wait --verbose the output just shows: Block Commit: [100 %] and stays like that (i waited about an hour or so...). No "Commit complete" message. - explicitly passing --base and/or --top arguments makes no difference. - did not find a related log entry in syslog and consorts env: - ubuntu server 14.04 x64 - libvirt-bin 1.2.2-0ubuntu13 i doubt that it just takes hours to complete after "100%", right? any ideas? kind of a dead-end for me :/ thanks, zyro

Hello all, I need to setup a virtual subnet to create a test AD domain (server + clients): guests need to talk to each other, they need to reach the internet through a virtual router with nat (virbr0?), broadcasts must not reach the host nor the physical network (because of conflicts with the existing real AD domain) and libvirt must NOT offer a dhcp service inside the virtual subnet. What kind of networking model should I look at?

Hello, I have a remote ubuntu server on which I have a kvm hypervisor installed. Now, on my ubuntu desktop, I create a new connection with virt-manager and start a remote guest. The guest successfully starts, however I can't see it in the console and, on client side, I get that remote user closed it. Looking at the /var/log/libvirtd on the server side I get that error: "failed to send audit message operation not permitted" I tried to call "virsh console myDomain" on the remote server and what I get is that the console freezes. The log is always the same, operation not permitted. Hi I have two node: hcg3, hcg4 which run glusterfs Also run libvirtd on each node. The problem cames when I use `virsh attach-device` to attach a glusterfs type disk . Hello, I would like to ask what I am doing wrong and what is the best approach to resolve this situation: First of all I start virtual machine by virDomainCreateXML. In my application I use libvncclient library that sends mouse events to this running domain. I had some troubles with coordinates of mouse cursor but all problem was solved when I added <input type='tablet' bus='usb'/> to xml configuration. So now I have a running domain and I want to create snapshot and then after some operations I want to restore this snapshot. I use virDomainSave and virDomainRestore that work fine. The only problem is, that after creating and restoring snapshot I have the same problem with coordinates of mouse. I need to create and restore snapshot also with <input type='tablet' bus= 'usb'/> somewhere specified. I also tried methods virDomainSaveFlags with xml configuration string(see below) as parameter *dxml, but method fails with: libvir: Domain Config error : XML error: domainsnapshot.Unable to create snapshot. What should I add to xml configuration? I look at http://libvirt.org/ formatsnapshot.html on example but I dont know what paths I should use in my program. I dont understand much snapshots and similar stuff so could you give me example how could I edit my xml configuration? Hi,guys! I've been using libvirt-1.1.1 with LXC1.0.0 to do my CS homework.But I met a problem when I tried to set vcpu for a LXC.The /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/machine/cpuset.cpus always show 0-3 no matter how many vcpu I defined in the XML setting file. But I found the command "virsh -c lxc:/// domaininfo lxc_name" got the right number as it is defined. What's the problem there? Is it a bug in libvirt-1.1.1? Thank you!

Dear Fil, I am not sure if my answer can help you. I had ever asked a similar question to Daniel and I was using a thirty-party card. As a container uses a shared kernel with the host, so hostdev mode='subsystem' doesn't make sense. Maybe you can try to use hostdev mode='capabilities'. I had to set the listen-adress for the system-dnsmasq to 127.0.0.1 and set bind-interfaces, to stop if from binding to all interfaces and overriding the libvirtd-dnsmasq, which also has dhcp enabled. Now, how can I tell the libvirtd-dnsmasq, to use the system-dnsmasq as first nameserver? Hi All, I am running libvirt-1.1.2 on Scientific Linux release 6.1 (Carbon). I compiled the libvirtd rpms and installed them on to my system. I see this error 2014-04-11 05:37:42.351+0000: 12378: error : virCommandWait:2348 : internal error: Child process (LC_ALL=C PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm -help) unexpected exit status 1: libvirt: error : internal error: cannot apply process capabilities -1 Whenever libvirtd restarts. Because of this error I also cannot create a domain with os_type set to "hvm". Virsh capabilities also does not list this os_type. Can someone let me if I am missing something obvious? Santhosh

Hello Fairly new to libvirt. I’m hoping to both solve a problem with this question as well as learn more detail about how libvirt works. Using RHEL 6.4 and libvirt version is 0.10.2 and qemu-img version is 0.12.1.2 Using virt-manager I created a VM. Nothing unusual as far as I can see. I then added a disk. So I have a second virtio based volume which the guest then mounts as a separate filesystem. At some stage after that I created a snapshot of the system. I can’t delete the snapshot. The end result is I’d like to create a snapshot that excludes the second (much larger) disk - that is backed up via conventional backup systems. But the issue is first deleting the snapshot and my understanding of what its saying. Hi, I'm currently investigating a problem with our windows 2008r2 guest on centos 6 hosts. The issue is that the windows system sometimes sees a SYN packet for a tcp connection but doesn't respond. Three seconds later the retransmitted packet arrives and this time windows decides to proceed normally with the connection. This is with the virtio drivers but I have now switched to the e1000 driver where the problem also occurs but not quite as badly as with virtio which leads me to speculate that the driver isn't really the problem but only affects whatever the real issue is. Also this does not happen when the systems primary IP is addressed directly but only when an IP on the loopback device is addressed through a load-balancer. I've also provisioned a linux guest on the same host and put that into the load balancer as well but there everything is fine. Has anyone run into this and can provide a pointer in the right direction? Regards, Dennis

Hello All: I've gotten a passthrough filesystem to work (as in, to mount) in my vm (guest F20, host F20), but due to the fact that the qemu-kvm process runs as "qemu" user, I cannot access "my" files from the share. Both the guest and the host are running SSSD so the user/group mapping is identical. Other than putting 'user = "root"' it /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf, is there a way to get this to work without trashing all of the file permissions on the directory? Even if I do put the user=root, I imagine selinux will become a major headache anyway. So is there a roadmap for how to get this working? -- Thanks, David Mansfield Cobite, INC.

I'm trying to narrow down the source of a bug where a docker container sshd closes the connection after a successful authentication (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1085081) - filed with libvirt as there's no docker-io component for RHEL 6.5 in bugzilla. One of the steps I'm taking is to reproduce a similar setup using LXC but while it seemed to have worked I'm not sure I've properly reproduced the setup I would have with docker. I've based myself on the RHEL 7b Linux Container Guide 1. Hello, I've installed Xen 4.3.1 on a machine with x86 based 64-bit Intel processor running Fedora 20 (Linux 3.11) and libvirt 1.0.1. I'm not able to start a VM. It's failing with the below mentioned error. What am I doing wrong? If this is documented somewhere, a pointer to that would be great. I did a "generic" search, but in vain, before posting to this list and I couldn't find an easier way to search through the mailman archives of this mailing list. Thanks for your time. [libvirt-users] Issue with 1.2.3 and lxcCheckNetNsSupport

Hi there I’ve just moved to libvirt-1.2.3 from 1.2.1; we use it for dealing with lxc containers I just wanted to report that everything went well for us with this new release, except for one little glitch At some point the lxc drivers seems to check that the kernel indeed has the netns feature built in Well in our environment this checks miserably fails; I haven’t been able to tell exactly why, but could find this post that might be related Bug 1050210 – lxcCheckNetNsSupport fails to detect NETNS As a quick workaround I have this patch below in place, with which everything else seems to be working fine; at least all our system tests are passing.. It feels like the way the 1.2.3 code checks for the presence of netns is clearly not exactly right (in our case selinux is disabled), and I wish a more reliable solution can be found in the future :) Hope this helps — Thanks in any case

Hello every one. i have been running Libvirt for few weeks on testing and will be migrating from Proxmox to libvirt very soon however there is a problem with command line learning. Virsh and virt-install is a complete set of commands. but i want to learn in depth some more command line option. so my question is; can i learn what "Virt-manager" GuI is running on the back end. so that i can learn how it add,edit,delete some advance level of configuration via GUI. i mean like we have "history" command which show what have we run in past so can i also have the details what Virt-manager has run remotely Thanks, MYK

Can anyone explain what is happening. After call virConnectOpen virEventRegisterDefaultImpl() call virConnectSetKeepAlive returns VirtError(1): internal error: the caller doesn't support keepalive protocol; perhaps it's missing event loop implementation, but the next call this sequence of commands returns success. Why virConnectSetKeepAlive not work right the first time? -- Fl@sh

Hi The problem is after I successful live migrate a domain, the domain os become read-only. and when I use qemu-img to show the disk info at node which domain current running , the command return 'Permission denied'. BUT, I can use qemu-img show the disk info at the previous node. My Env: two node, all install libvirt + kvm . use glusterfs as shared storage. the libvirt/kvm version: libvirt-0.10.2-29.el6_5.5.x86_64 qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2-2.415.el6_5.6.x86_64 qemu-img-0.12.1.2-2.415.el6_5.6.x86_64 glusterfs-3.4.1-3.el6.x86_64 -------------- lyz_pro 2014-04-02

[libvirt-users] Advice request for building a centralized vm disk provider server

Hello again, sorry for mailing in so short time but I have another question about live migration. >From redhat documentation I see that the storage for a VM which has to be migrated has to be shared throught some mechanism and I have chosen iscsi. Anyway I now would need a way to dinamically create a new virtual machine and so a virtual hard disk, note that this vm will have to be migrated too. I though about this solution: I would share an HUGE iscsi target, this target is a logical hard drive containing many disk images which would be the VM's hard drives. I can easily clone a vm by making a simple file copy of a vm disk. This would allow me to create a VM by specifying a path like <iscsi target path>/disk1.img. I have two problems: 1)how to get an unique <iscsi target path>? On my phisical host it is mounted as a random uuid in the /media folder. 2)will migration work with a <file> instead of a <device> as hard disk field? If you have any better solution, even involing the change from iscsi to another technology, you are free to propose it to me. Sorry for bothering, Pasquale

I am seeing that migrate() function is blocking, isn't there a non blocking function with a callback associated to it, so to report events like end migration, migration progress (job domain info informations) and so on? Pasquale
