[libvirt-users] How to use xl (in place of xm) with libvirt 1.0.2 and Xen 4.2.1 in Ubuntu 13.04?

QUESTION: What, if anything, can I do so that I can use xl (in place of xm) with libvirt 1.0.2 and Xen 4.2.1 in Ubuntu 13.04? BACKGROUND: I am testing a fully updated (as of March 27) installation of Ubuntu 13.04 that includes the following packages: libvirt - version 1.0.2-0ubuntu9 xen-hypervisor-4.2-amd64 - version 4.2.1-0ubuntu1 Upon setting TOOLSTACK=xm in /etc/default/xen (as well as making a few needed tweaks to /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp), libvirt and virt-manager worked great. Yippee! I guess that I should be happy that the xm toolstack still works with Xen 4.2.1 and quit while I'm ahead, but... According to libvirt's documentation: "libxl: Starting with Xen 4.2, the legacy XenD/xm toolstack is deprecated in favor of libxl, also commonly called libxenlight. libvirt supports this new Xen toolstack via the libxl driver. If XenD is enabled, the legacy xen driver consisting of the above mentioned channels will be used. If XenD is disabled, the libxl driver will be used." See http://libvirt.org/drvxen.html. In view of the above, I attempted to use xl in place xm by setting TOOLSTACK=xl in /etc/default/xen. [libvirt-users] libvirtd using 11GB

Hi All, Am new to this list, and have asked in #ovirt / ovirt-users list and they pointed me to here ... I've seen libvirtd using ~11 GB of resident memory after the host has been running for about 60+ days with about 40 VMs running on it. The versions I'm currently running are : libvirt.x86_64 0.9.10-21.el6_3.7 libvirt-client.x86_64 0.9.10-21.el6_3.7 libvirt-lock-sanlock.x86_64 libvirt-python.x86_64 0.9.10-21.el6_3.7 I know I can just restart libvirtd and "all should be fine" (and hopefully I'll regain the 11GB of memory) - however, is there an updated version that maybe fixes a memory leak ?? Hi, I am having trouble with a libvirt lxc EXE container which is starting another EXE container itself, and I need to see the console output of (hopefully) both containers. How do I do this? I have searched the net a lot, but the answers I found were either out of date, wrong or didn't work. Has anyone else here done this? Jon

Hi All, I am setting the value for "read_bytes_sec" using the following API code virDomainSetBlockIoTune(dom, "/mnt/tmpsdb/FileVM1", parainfoPtr, nparams, 2); I am succesfully able to set this value and i can read it back using the API virDomainGetBlockIoTune(dom,"/mnt/tmpsdb/FileVM1",parainfoPtr,&nparams,2); But after setting this value when i shutdown my VM and start it again I am getting following error - ibvirtError: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: qemu-system-x86_64: -drive file=/mnt/tmpsdb/FileVM1,if=none,id=drive-ide0-1-1,format=raw,bps_rd=1048576: Invalid parameter 'bps_rd' Note - when i see dumpxml of the VM following lines are got added after setting the iotunes for read_bytes_sec <iotune> <read_bytes_sec>1048576</read_bytes_sec> </iotune> Please help me. Also i wanted to know whether we can set block IO tune for a VM using the above API. Is it same as the IO throttling provided by cgroup?

Hello, I am trying to run OpenStack (via devstack) on an Arndale board using Linaro's 13.04 release. I am getting a libvirt error that I was hoping someone could provide some more detail about: libvir: QEMU Driver error : internal error Cannot find suitable emulator for armv7l If this is coming from libvirt, what is it looking for for a suitable emulator? [libvirt-users] Pre-requisites to use Java bindings with QEMU

Hello everyone, I've been reading through the articles on the website trying to understand what's needed to use the libvirt Java bindings with a QEMU hypervisor, but still have some uncertainties/questions: 1. It is my understanding that libvirtd has to be running on the machine hosting the hypervisor. Correct? 2. For libvirtd to communicate with QEMU, QEMU has to be installed on the machine hosting the hypervisor. Correct? I guess what I'm really asking is whether the libvirt QEMU "driver" includes the QEMU source code, or rather communicates with pre-installed executables. 3. Assuming the answer to the two former questions is "yes", is there a way to bypass libvirtd if the machine hosting the hypervisor is the same as the one running the Java code? I'm asking because running libvirtd would require privileged permissions, whereas QEMU itself can run with normal user permissions. Is that a price I have to pay for the uniform interface that libvirt presents? Yours, Lior.

Hi, I have a VMM application using a homegrown client for communicating with hypervisor. I am planning to migrate to libvirt because of the blocking nature of the calls. After going over the architecture, I would like to have a few doubts clarified 1) Should my application be necessarily multi-threaded in order to make use of the non-blocking calls in libvirt. [Are overlapping methods mainly used by multithreaded clients]. 2) I was wondering if there was any way to provide a callback along with the methods to achieve non-blocking.[My application has event library so it can receive events] 3) Is the libvirt RPC client multi-threaded. [i.e., does it internally use multiple threads to dispatch requests to server and return response to the application] I can provide more information, if its not helpful. Thanks Arvind

[libvirt-users] Unable to start LXC on Gentoo w/ libvirt 1.0.4 or 1.0.5. 1.0.3 works

Hello. I use libvirtd on my Gentoo development system to manage both QEMU and LXC. When 1.0.3 came out, I updated to it from 1.0.3-r2, but 1.0.4 failed to start my LXC containers. I did not research the issue at the time, so I revert to 1.0.3-r2. Today I updated to 1.0.5 and my LXC containers still fail to start. I have not changed my domain XML at all. I am looking for suggestions on what to try to resolve the problem. Maybe I'm missing a package or have something mus-configured for libvirt-1.0.5. btw, A month ago I updates to the most recent "udev" (udev-200). This required me to rename all of my network interfaces. My QEMU and LXC containers continued to work. All of my VMs use bridged networking on "br0" or "br1". Those virtual interfaces are not bridged to any physical NIC. They exist only inside my host's kernel. I have extensive iptables rules to filter traffic between my network segments (physical + virtual). TL;DR: this was burried in a log file: " error : lxcContainerMountFSDevPTS:808 : Failed to mount /.oldroot//var/run/libvirt/lxc/dwj-lnx-dev.devpts on /dev/pts: No such file or directory". Hi, I have registered for LIFECYCLE events of libvirt. But I don't know, 1. about the the latency of these events happening and notification generation. e.g. suppose a VM goes down. How much time it takes to realize that the particular VM has gone down(going to say, DEFINED state) and then notification is generated? 2. Second question is, can someone please explain what are the sequence of steps happen between a VM going down and the notification is generated? Coul you please answer both the queries? Hello all, I installed libvirt-0.10.2-18.el6.x86_64 ,is there any relationship between libvirtd and numad ? I found that when I started numad daemon , the vm can start in a shorter time, but when numad daemon stoped , vm could still start ,just with a longer start time. how does this work with the two daemons? thanks.

Hello, I am trying to do kerberos (sasl+gssapi) authentication for a hypervisor running libvirt. When I have valid kerberos credentials these errors end up in my logs. I have no idea what this all means. [libvirt-users] migration job: unexpectedly failed

Hi, I am trying to run some test and analysis while performing a wide live migration of a VM between two different network location. I use libvirt and qemu-kvm as hypervisor on Linux. The live wide migration from A to B completes successfully, instead I can't achieve the reverse path, from B to A (and that is right what I am interested to). To perform the migration I run this command in virsh: *"migrate --live --verbose uno qemu+ssh://root@ip.address/system"* * * Even if dramatically slow (i guess due to some network bottleneck) the migration starts correctly, but it gets stuck at 96% and after some minute it returns this error: *"Migration: [ 96 %]error: operation failed: migration job: unexpectedly failed" *without further details. The libvirtd.log file in the source host says: *2013-05-07 11:01:18.739+0000: 9538: error : qemuMigrationUpdateJobStatus:945 : operation failed: migration job: unexpectedly failed* * * Apparently i can't find any clue of what is causing the error, do you have any idea/solution? * * (I'm not sure if this is the appropriate mailing-list, maybe it was better the devs list?) [libvirt-users] Java client error on Windows 7 64 bit for Libvirt on KVM

Hi, I need some help in building a Java client on Windows 7 64 bit plaftorm to manage a KVM using the libvirt APIs. Using the instructions at http://libvirt.org/java.html, i was able to build libvirt.jar. My understanding is that libvirt.jar uses JNA to call libvirt's native windows library. I tried using the libvirt dlls in the experimental Windows installation package mentioned in http://libvirt.org/windows.html at http://libvirt.org/sources/win32_experimental/Libvirt-0.8.8-0.exe but whenever I try to connect to my remote API, I get the below Java exception : Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: %1 is not a valid Win32 application. at com.sun.jna.Native.open(Native Method) at com.sun.jna.Native.open(Native.java:1718) at com.sun.jna.NativeLibrary.loadLibrary(NativeLibrary.java:210) at com.sun.jna.NativeLibrary.getInstance(NativeLibrary.java:322) at com.sun.jna.Library$Handler.<init>(Library.java:142) at com.sun.jna.Native.loadLibrary(Native.java:387) at com.sun.jna.Native.loadLibrary(Native.java:366) at org.libvirt.jna.Libvirt.<clinit>(Unknown Source) at org.libvirt.Library.<clinit>(Unknown Source) at org.libvirt.Connect.<init>(Unknown Source) at Main.main(Main.java:8) But when I try the same client code on a Windows XP 32 bit machine (with 32 bit JVM), I don't see this problem and the connection succeeds. So it looks like the problem is that I am not using 64 bit windows libvirt dlls. Is my assumption correct? Is there a Windows installer with 64 bit Libvirt dlls ? Or are the 64 bit version of DLLs published somewhere? Hi, I think the API Reference for libvirt disappeared from libvirt.org: browsing to http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt.html delivers no content. The content is still available via google cache http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:libvirt.org/html/libvi… So, is this removed on purpose? Or is this some bluff from my browser (but I checked this from different sites with different browsers ;-/ )? [libvirt-users] Location of 64 bit libvirt dlls (Windows)?

I have written a Java client (64 bit JVM) that uses libvirt APIs on a remote KVM for KVM management. Since the JVM is 64 bit, the client needs 64 bit libvirt dlls and I could not find them (I found 32 bit libvirt dlls on http://libvirt.org/windows.html) Could someone point to where I could find 64 bit libvirt dlls?
