Hi, everyone I'm writing a virtual machine monitor based on libvirt. As I read the api reference, I found I'm confused by some terms. 1, What is cumulative I/O wait CPU time? API reference says that VIR_NODE_CPU_STATS_IOWAIT indicate cumulative I/O wait CPU time. I'm confused by this time. As far as I know, when cpu meets IO wait situation, it will schedule another task, so, how this IO wait time is accounted? 2, How do I get VCPU runtime? In my mind, VIR_DOMAIN_CPU_STATS_CPUTIME indicates the physical cpu time consumed by the domain. Is there any API by which I can query virtual CPU running stats in one domain?

Hi, everyone I'm using libvirt and resort to virDomainGetCPUStats for cpu usage by one domain. In my system, Ubuntu-11.10 64bit with 2 cores and Qemu Hyperviser, this function returns something like this: virTypedParameter[0] { field: "cpu_time" type: 4 value.ul 51640610899 } virTypedParameter[1] { field: "cpu_time" type: 4 value.ul 55302820304 } This 51640610899 and 55302820304 kind of conflict the result returned by "cat /proc/stat | grep cpu" cpu 449224 6812 89433 4407261 50327 1 2443 0 13041 0 cpu0 224251 2603 43144 2195672 34682 0 2350 0 6692 0 cpu1 224972 4209 46289 2211589 15644 0 93 0 6349 0 I know the precision of /proc/stat is 1/HZ, so what's the precision of CPU stats returned by virDomainGetCPUStats?

[libvirt-users] A way to determine when a guest domain was launched?

I've looked around at the API documents (I'm using python) and I know how to find the cpu active uptime of the domain, but that only increases if the domain is running something. Is there a way to determine when the domain was first launched, either as a date or uptime with idle uptime included? /Amy

[libvirt-users] No way to obtain guest's cpu and mem usage?

Hi everybody, I'm using the PHP API to make a web interface interact with the virtual machines installed on some hypervisor. Everything is fine, but I would like to find a way to get the guest's cpu and mem usage, so that it should be possible to make some rrd graphs. I didn't find out anything and also it seems looking around that there is no way to obtain those data. What is strange for me is that programs like virt-top are showing exactly what I'm looking for. Can anyone help me to find out a way to retrieve those statistics? Another related question: do you think I can obtain the same data by using this: ps aux | egrep "[/]usr/libexec/qemu-kvm.*libvirt.*" | awk '{print $3"/"$4}' on the hypervisor? These are related to the kvm process, and the kvm process IS the virtual machine... Or not? [libvirt-users] Libvirtd not starting on reboot

Hello everyone, I have libvirt and qemu/kvm running on ubuntu 11.10 desktop. Everything is working great when it is on. The problem is if I reboot, virsh doesn't see the hypervisor anymore and I can't manually start libvirtd. Libvirtd is currently located in /usr/sbin/libvirtd and I originally started it with sudo ./libvirtd -d from that directory. How do I ensure that libvirtd starts on bootup of the host machine? Hello all, I know libvirt has the following two commands: vol-wipe vol-delete Can someone please explain to me how these function? Do these only remove previous session data so that a new virtual instance cannot see it or does it remove it at the physical level level too so that the data cannot be found anywhere on the physical drive? I know Eucalyptus and KVM use sparse files upon instance creation and the instance thinks the ephemeral space is all zeroes even though it is just sparse. I appreciate any insight in how the two virsh commands work and if they use zeroes, sparse, or some other method. Thanks, Shawn

Hello, I see there is an option with virsh attach-disk to set the cache to "none" for raw devices, but I can't find how to attach the disk with io=native (needed for performance reasons). The goal is to attach a disk online, directly with the proper performance settings. I know I can set this in virt-manager, but then I have to restart the VM to apply the change, so this is an offline operation. Hi folks, Has anyone encountered the following PCI passthrough error? error: internal error Process exited while reading console \ log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 assigned_dev_pci_read: pread failed, ret = 0 errno = 2 It's produced after I've detached the PCI device from the base OS and have tried to start up the guest domain. To get to this point, I mostly followed these instructions: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/13/html/Virtualization_Guide/cha… The distro I'm using is Debian squeeze, which by default comes with libvirt 0.8.3 and qemu-kvm 0.12.5, although to avoid a different PCI passthrough error, I used Debian backports for squeeze to upgrade them to libvirt 0.9.8 and qemu-kvm 1.0. The motherboard involved has VT-d support, which I've enabled with the "intel_iommu=on" kernel option (dmesg shows "Intel-IOMMU: enabled"). I did not bother with setsebool because SELinux is disabled. According to lspci, the device I want to pass through to the guest domain, a USB controller, has bus/slot/function 00:1a.0, so I added the following stanza to the <devices> section of my guest domain: <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'> <source> <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x1a' function='0x0'/> </source> </hostdev> Actually, every time I save this configuration, libvirt changes it to: <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'> <source> <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x1a' function='0x0'/> </source> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x05' function='0x0'/> </hostdev> Huh, slot 5? I don't have any PCI devices that use slot 5. Well, at least the system doesn't complain, but I worry that this might be a symptom of something more serious. Anyway, I'd be very grateful if anyone has any tips on how I might avoid the aforementioned error and get PCI passthrough to to work. Thanks, Jaap

Hello list, In short: I am experiencing a problem where trying to start a VM which is allready running on a different libvirt host. Starting it fails, thanks to sanlock, but the disk dies on the original hypervisor and the vms filesystem is rendered read-only. Long version: i have the following setup: Two machines (H1 and H2) using CentOS 6.2 with the packages: qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2-2.209.el6_2.4.x86_64 libvirt-client-0.9.4-23.el6_2.7.x86_64 libvirt-0.9.4-23.el6_2.7.x86_64 libvirt-lock-sanlock-0.9.4-23.el6_2.7.x86_64 They share two NFS folders, one for filesystems ( net set up as a libvirt storage pool ) and one for sanlock. sanlock is started without watchdog. /etc/libvirt/qemu-sanlock.conf: auto_disk_leases = 1 disk_lease_dir = "/opt/mln/sanlock" host_id = 51 ( host_id is 52 on H2 ) cat /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf | grep sanlock lock_manager = "sanlock" A virtual machine is created ( with virsh create ) on H1 using the following xml: <domain type='kvm' > <name>rhel1.locktest</name> <memory>524288</memory> <vcpu></vcpu> <os> Hi, everyone I'm writing application using libvirt and I need call virDomainGetCPUStats to get domain cpu stats . I learn from API reference that this function has to be called when domain is running. So my question is if there is an atomic way to test the domain's state and get its stats? Or, it's ok to call this function when domain is not active, but caller just gets error returned. In my code, I just call it directly and return error. I wonder if this programming practice has subtle problem like race condition.

Hi, I set up a virtual environment based upon KVM/libvirt/pacemaker. When managing this I cannot use virt-manager or virsh, since everything is managed by the cluster. So when I need to migrate a vm I must drive the operation from pacemaker (via crm shell program). I'm ok with this kind of management, but what I need now is just a bare web interface to make the users see just the position (= on which node) and the state of the vm (cpu, memory and so on, like virt-top output). I don't want to use things like ovirt or similar, because I'm managing everything with the cluster and also I cannot use LCMC (http://lcmc.sourceforge.net/) since it is java based and is not as simple as I want. I need just those information to be printed in a self refreshing web page, and before doing it by myself I was just wondering if something already exists. I saw projects like http://karesansui-project.info and https://fedorahosted.org/virt_web but maybe there is something easier and more focused to obtain just the informations I need. Hi. Can anyone confirm if vcpupin works correctly with kvm? If set I pin a vcpu it shows up correctly via vcpuinfo, but querying via taskset shows the cpu is not pinned. [libvirt-users] Suggestions on building VM disks from scratch

This may not be the best forum to ask, but it does seem to be one where it is as likely as anywhere that someone will have dealt with a similar problem. I need to define a procedure for last resort disaster recovery from an incremental file level backup of the root partition (and any others that are critical.) Now it is easy enough to create a raw virtual disk with dd, then to losetup and do a cfdisk and mkfs, then mount it and rsync the backup onto it. At this point I would like to be able to install grub and make the virtual disk bootable. I have 'issues' with the way grub does things and the way it seems to make certain assumptions for you. The virtual disk is in actuality going to become an hd(0) on the virtual machine; but my past experience with grub is that it is going to assume you really intend to install the MBR on your running system disk; but if you tell it hd(1) then when you try to boot it ain't gonna work. Has anyone dealt with these issues? It's more than just a VM one; I run up against it time and again. A few months ago I attempted to attach a brand new SATA disk via a USB converter to my laptop so I could build a system on it for a machine that has not CD, no floppy, etc, etc. I damn near clobbered my laptop but fortunately caught the problem in time and fixed it before a reboot... in which case I'd have *really* had issues.

Hi all, I am facing a bit of a trouble with setvcpus on a kvm libvirt The guest is crashing right after the command is given. I have no trouble with virtio_balloon and that is working fine when I use setmem command in virsh. The guest is running 3.3.1 kernel (the command fails both on the stock kernel 2.6.X as-well-as the latest 3.3.1) I have seen it working in xen. But this is kvm. Does this feature work with kvm ? I was looking at the release candidate of libvirt (0.9.11-rc2) and I have not been able to understand if the openvswitch support includes the port tagging support.
