[libvirt-users] QemuDomainObjEndJob called when libvirtd is started and libvirt insists qemu is using the wrong disk source.

List, I was under the impression that I could restart libvirtd without it destroying my VMs, but am not finding that to be true. When I killall libvirtd then my VM's keep running, but then when I start libvirtd it calls qemuDomainObjEndJob:1542 : Stopping job: modify (async=none vm=0x7fb8cc0d8510 name=test) and my domain gets whacked. Any way to disable this behavior? Also, while I'm at it, due to issues with snapshotting, I ended up with two domains where libvirt insists the disk source is incorrect which causes many things to break like this: root@wasvirt1:/etc/libvirt# virsh domblklist wasdev Target Source ------------------------------------------------ vda /glustervol1/vm/wasdev/wasdev.reboot hdc /dev/sr0 Yet: root@wasvirt1:/etc/libvirt# lsof | grep wasdev 2235 /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 /var/log/libvirt/qemu/wasdev.log 2235 /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 /var/log/libvirt/qemu/wasdev.log 2235 /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 /glustervol1/vm/wasdev/wasdev.qcow2 The reason is because a blockcommit --active --pivot doesn't work, I blockjob --abort, then try again, it works the second time, but then the disk is wrong. Hi. Is is possible to use GPG on the host instead of NSS with virtual smartcards? Please document how or add support for it. Can a virtual smartcard make the host less secure? If there are bugs in GPG/NSS backend on the host can they be abused by untrusted code in the vm?

How does the libvirt deal with the vnet mac address? Greetings, if I establish a network for the VM (hypervisor is KVM) using bridge in the virt-manager , a vnet0 device is created . There are some relationships about mac address between the vnet0 device in the hypervisor and the ethX device in the VM, for example : the mac address of vnet0 is FE:54:00:84:E3:62 the mac address of ethX in the VM is 52:54:00:84:E3:62 two mac addresses above are almost the same except the first part of the address . but if I created a tap device manually , tunctl -t tap0 -u root brctl addif br0 tap0 and add tap0 to the VM, I will find that mac address between the tap0 device in the hypervisor and the ethX device in the VM will totally different . so I think that libvirt must do something about the mac address handling, could you please kindly tell me something about this ? [libvirt-users] Remove Virtual bridge and DNSMASQ

I am running KVM virtualization with libvirtd (libvirt) 0.10.2 in bridged network mode, however I still have the default virtual network bridge/interfaces and dnsmasq on the host. What I am trying to understand is whether or not dnsmasq and the virtual network (*virbr0, Vnet0 and Vnet1*) still play any role. If not, can I remove them? On most virtual hosts I see they are left around even when a network bridge has been manually setup and the default virtual network bridge/interfaces and dnsmasq are not serve any purpose. Hello Is there a way to mount a directory as readonly when using LXC with libvirt? Something like: <filesystem type="mount"> <source dir="/sw/py27/python2.7_x86_64"/> <target dir="/opt//py27"/> <readonly/> </filesystem> The documentation says readonly only works with KVM/QEMU. Regards, Harish

With Libvirt under modern kernels, you can't use <interface type='ethernet'> unless QEMU is running as root. Running qemu as root is not ideal, but I was able to track down the issue to this linux change: http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=c… Which means that if you're seeing errors like this: 2015-03-02T18:00:51.243477Z qemu-kvm: -netdev tap,script=/tmp/vnet380622.sh,id=hostnet1: could not open /dev/net/tun: Operation not permitted 2015-03-02T18:00:51.243518Z qemu-kvm: -netdev tap,script=/tmp/vnet380622.sh,id=hostnet1: Device 'tap' could not be initialized They can be resolved like this: 1) Edit /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf, and add "/dev/net/tun" to the cgroup_device_acl option 2) Run: setcap cap_net_admin+eip /bin/qemu-system-x86_64 This will give QEMU CAP_NET_ADMIN when it runs. Make sure you review `man capabilities` to see what capabilities this actually gets qemu. The downside here is that in the event a guest somehow breaks out of qemu, CAP_NET_ADMIN gives them a bunch of scary permissions that could result in you having a seriously bad day (it's enough permissions to MITM all the machine's traffic, which could easily result in compromise) It looks to me like libvirt already has the ability to create tap devices and pass them into qemu (src/util/virnetdevtap.c - virNetDevTapCreateInBridgePort), however you need to actually be using a bridged network to do this. There is no way to have libvirt just create a tap device and leave the rest to user defined scripts. I don't think I have the necessary knowledge to add that feature in a generic way, but it seems like it would be pretty handy. I'll probably just work around it by removing the virNetDevBridgeAddPort call from our version of libvirt.

Hi, I tried to enable virtio-blk data plane feature for VMs in my openstack environment, the hypervisor is ubuntu 14.04, libvirt 1.2.2 and QEMU 2.0. As nova doesn't support that parameter yet, I did belows 1. nova boot a VM with raw disk image. 2. nova stop the VM. 3. run "virsh edit <instance-id>" on the hyprvisor node, and adding below into instance xml just before </domain>. However, the <qemu:commandline> part is ignored and not saved after closing virsh edit, seems that libvirt rejected these changes. Is there any XML syntax error here? Or libvirt doesn't support <qemu:commandline> tag? <qemu:commandline> <qemu:arg value='-set'/> <qemu:arg value='device.drive-virtio-disk0.x-data-plane=on'/> </qemu:commandline> Regards, Chengyuan.

Hi All, I have a question regarding the uses of libvirtd. We have the following situation to manage. We have several hosts with libvirtd running. We have one management application to manage different VMs launched in those different hosts. We want to configure the system such a way so that one libvirtd can collect information about the VMs launched by other libvirtd running in different hosts. Is it possible? Could you please point me to some resource around this? In this we will be able to get information about VMs from single source and need not to query different host for VMs info. Regards, Somenath

Hi, After upgrading my systems to Fedora 21 I decided to give Firewalld and NetworkManager technologies a try instead of keep relying on iptables and network.service but I now have my doubts. I have a F21 host with br0 configured with a network-script file to obtain its IP via dhcp (no problems with this), firewalld is running on the host and the guests are using br0 and dhcp to obtain the IPs from the same source the host/br0 is getting its own IP. The problem I'm having is that, after some time, packets from the guests are not being forwarded by br0 but I can't quite locate the reason for this. It is not until I restart the guest that everything starts working again (restarting NetworkManager in the guest does not work). Why br0 stops forwarding packets? What would be the right approach to get this setup working? Should I just forget about Firewalld and NetworkManager by disable them and instead keep using iptables and network.service? [libvirt-users] VM Performance using KVM Vs. VMware ESXi

Hi All We are currently testing our product using KVM as the hypervisor. We are not using KVM as a bare-metal hypervisor. We use it on top of a RHEL installation. So basically RHEL acts as our host and using KVM we deploy guests on this system. We have all along tested and shipped our application image for VMware ESXi installations , So this it the first time we are trying our application image on a KVM hypervisor. On this front i have done some tests to find out how our application's response time is when deployed on KVM and then compare it with a VM deployed on VMware ESXi. We have a benchmark test that basically loads the application simulating a load of 100 parallel users logging into the system and downloading reports. These tests basically use a HTTP GET query to load the application VM. In addition to that i have taken care to use the same hardware for both the tests , one with RHEL(Host)+KVM and another with VMware ESXi. All the hardware specifications for both the servers remain the same. The load test also remains the same for testing with both the servers. First observation is that the average response time on the VMware ESXi is : 500 milli-seconds while the application's average response time when deployed using RHEL(Host)+ KVM is : 1050 milli-seconds. The response time of the application when deployed on KVM is twice as much as when it is deployed using VMware ESXi. I did few more tests to find which sub-system on these servers shows varying metrics. First i started with IOZone to find out if there is any mismatch in the speed with which data is read / written to the local disk on the two VMs and found that "Read" speed in the VM that was deployed using RHEL(Host)+KVM was twice as slow as the VM which was deployed using VMware ESXi. For more on IoZone , Please refer : http://www.iozone.org/ more specifically the following IoZone metrics were twice as less when compared to the server running with VMware ESXi: Read Re-read Reverse-Read Stride Read Pread Note: I had run the IoZone tests on the VMs on both the servers. Second observation to be made was the output from the "top" command. Hi folks I have a question about lxc-enter-namespace I am migrating lxc containers from a host running libvirt-1.2.5 on f20 to another one running libvirt-1.2.9 on f21 and now I can't seem to use lxc-enter-namespace for entering in a container any more I would do virsh -c lxc:/// lxc-enter-namespace --noseclabel container /bin/bash but when I try the same now I am getting this: # virsh -c lxc:/// lxc-enter-namespace --noseclabel nagios /bin/bash setlocale: No such file or directory libvirt: error : Expected at least one file descriptor error: internal error: Child process (137198) unexpected exit status 125 I tried to google that but nothing too relevant showed up.. are there known regressions to lxc-enter-namespace, or what else do I seem to do wrong here? thanks

Hi, All As we execute the virsh command and get the return code in my shell script, the code is 141. virsh blockcommit $VM_NAME --path $vm_data_file --base $backing_file --wait rtn_code=$? We get the return code with 141 in script accidentally. And most time we get the code with zero or one. Can we change some code of libvirt to avoid the 141 code? Hello, I am using "virsh snapshot-create-as" to create external snapshots of running VMs using libvirt 1.0.2 on Ubuntu 12.04 and libvirt 1.2.2 on Ubuntu 14.04. This works well for creating the snapshots, but I notice that the on-disk XML file in /etc/libvirt/qemu is not updated with the new disk image file after the snapshot is created. This appears to be very similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libvirt/+bug/1403841, but occurs on both 12.04 and 14.04 so I am not sure it is the same bug. This presents a problem if the virtual machine host is suddenly powered off since a subsequent boot will find the VM using an older image file to boot rather than the most recent snapshot. Is it safe for me to use an external wrapper script that does the following to ensure the on-disk XML is up-to-date: virsh snapshot-create-as .... virsh dumpxml > /etc/libvirt/qemu/<domain>.xml Is it safe for me to overwrite the contents of /etc/libvirt/qemu/<domain>.xml manually while the VM is running? Hi, My first e-mail... my apologies if this is not the appropriate e-mail list. My goal is to *write* from the guest OS to a CD or DVD reader/writer on my host system. Currently, the write operation is failing. I believe it is because the virtual CD-ROM device is set to be "readonly". Is it possible to write to a QEMU CDROM device and, if so, how? (The host machine's CD-ROM drive does support writing/burning.) I'm using the "virt-manager" GUI to start the virtual machine. Once started, the "qemu" command line from my virtual machine process includes the following, where the host's built-in CD reader/writer is "/dev/sr0". /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 ... -drive file=/dev/sr0,if=none,id=drive-ide0-0-1,readonly=on,format=raw This obviously says that the device is "readonly". A snippet of XML from my virtual machine from the CDROM is: <domain type='kvm'> ... <devices> <disk type='block' device='cdrom'> <driver name='qemu' type='raw'/> <source dev='/dev/sr0'/> <target dev='hdb' bus='ide'/> <readonly/> <address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' target='0' unit='1'/> </disk> I've tried removing the <readonly/> tag from the above VM definition, and then running the VM, but the tag magically reappears in the VM definition when it runs. Also, the "virt-manager" GUI shows the CDROM device as having the option of "Readonly" being checked (and the GUI does not allow me to uncheck it.) Hello! I am working on vhost-net support for ARM and want to try to set up complete configuration with irqfds. For this purpose i need to change address type specification for this device from "virtio-mmio" to "PCI". But, when i attempt to do so, i get error message "No PCI buses available". Can anybody explain me what i am doing wrong ? The most confusing part is that i use 'virt' machine which actually has generic PCI host, and for test purposes i even set up SATA controller for my virtual machine which perfectly appears on the emulated bus. And specification for SATA is simply: --- cut --- <controller type='sata' index='0'/> --- cut --- without any explicit PCI location specifiers.
