[libvirt-users] How to optimize for IBM db2?
by Basin Ilya 14 Apr '16

14 Apr '16

Hi. I have performance problems with IBM DB2 10.5 server on KVM guest: [db2inst1@wc8ws-auth ~]$ time db2 create db test DB20000I The CREATE DATABASE command completed successfully. real 7m46.155s user 0m0.022s sys 0m0.027s It takes 30 seconds to create a database on an image mounted with -oloop. I think it's because db2 uses O_DIRECT to ensure consistency. I also think that O_DIRECT is not propagated to host with default cache modes in VM settings. The real problem is: when guest writes data in small blocks, host CPU becomes a bottleneck. I hava a relatively old 24-core Xeon. Host `top` shows 130% CPU usage by qemu-kvm, when I run the following command: [root@wc8ws-auth ~]# </dev/zero timeout -sINT 30s dd iflag=fullblock oflag=direct conv=notrunc of=./bigfile bs=8192 140384+0 records in 140384+0 records out 1150025728 bytes (1.2 GB) copied, 29.9992 s, 38.3 MB/s I tried all buses, cache modes and IO modes; "Cache mode=none" is slower, others are almost equal. I moved from image file to LVM. This raised the speed from 16M to 38M. I also tried VirtualBox, but it's neither faster, nor slower, and it eats CPU too. -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kind regards, Ilya Basin software engineer Reksoft Skype: basin_ilya phone +7(812)324-24-40*553

[libvirt-users] how to list and kill existing console sessions to VMs?
by Francesco Romani 14 Apr '16

14 Apr '16

Hi everyone, If a VM is configured to have a console attached to it, like using http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementCharConsole Libvirt offers access to VM serial console's using the virDomainOpenConsole API[1] However, I didn't find a way to 1. list the existing connections to the console 2. kill an existing connection - without reconnecting using VIR_DOMAIN_CONSOLE_FORCE[2] Am I missing something? How can I do that? Rationale for my request oVirt [3] offers a management interface for VMs, and we have recently integrated user-friandly VM serial console access [4] in the system; in the future release we want to enhance the administation capabilities allowing to check existing connections and to terminate them (maybe because it got stuck). +++ [1] http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt-domain.html#virDomainOpenConsole [2] http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt-domain.html#VIR_DOMAIN_CONSOLE_FORCE [4] http://www.ovirt.org/ [5] https://www.ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/engine/serial-con… et. al. -- Francesco Romani RedHat Engineering Virtualization R & D Phone: 8261328 IRC: fromani

[libvirt-users] DBus API for libvirt
by sbaugh＠catern.com 13 Apr '16

13 Apr '16

Hello, For a variety of reasons I am interested in a D-Bus interface for libvirt. Primarily for use with http://cockpit-project.org/ for which it would be very easy to write a web interface for libvirt, given a D-Bus interface for libvirt, but writing using the raw libvirt RPC protocol would require writing a new Javascript library for parsing/encoding that protocol. But there are other nice features of a D-Bus interface for libvirt, too. Does a D-Bus interface for libvirt exist? Thanks!

[libvirt-users] Clone VM with saved state
by Michael Ravits 13 Apr '16

Hi, My use case involves creating duplicates of saved virtual machines. Tried with virt-manager and with virsh but so far it seems like this case is not supported by these tools. Does anyone know how I could achieve the above? Thanks, Michael

[libvirt-users] CentOS 6 and 1.3.3
by Brian Rak 12 Apr '16

12 Apr '16

libvirt 1.3.3 seems to have introduced some kind of issue on CentOS 6 (no systemd). After upgrading, libvirt would take an incredibly long time to get to a state where it would actually respond to a simple 'virsh list' command. Looking at verbose output showed this repeating at exactly 30s intervals 2016-04-12 19:40:57.142+0000: 14929: info : virEventPollDispatchHandles:507 : EVENT_POLL_DISPATCH_HANDLE: watch=1 events=1 2016-04-12 19:40:57.142+0000: 14929: info : virEventPollRunOnce:641 : EVENT_POLL_RUN: nhandles=116 timeout=-1 2016-04-12 19:40:57.143+0000: 15223: info : virObjectRef:296 : OBJECT_REF: obj=0x7fb944181bc0 2016-04-12 19:40:57.144+0000: 15223: info : virObjectUnref:259 : OBJECT_UNREF: obj=0x7fb944181bc0 2016-04-12 19:40:57.157+0000: 15223: info : virObjectUnref:259 : OBJECT_UNREF: obj=0x7fb944253020 2016-04-12 19:40:57.157+0000: 15223: info : virObjectUnref:259 : OBJECT_UNREF: obj=0x7fb944309450 2016-04-12 19:40:57.157+0000: 15223: info : virObjectUnref:259 : OBJECT_UNREF: obj=0x7fb94400ca90 2016-04-12 19:41:27.147+0000: 15224: info : virDBusCall:1577 : DBUS_METHOD_REPLY: 'org.freedesktop.DBus.ListActivatableNames' on '/org/freedesktop/DBus' at 'org.freedesktop.DBus' 2016-04-12 19:41:27.148+0000: 15224: info : virObjectUnref:259 : OBJECT_UNREF: obj=0x7fb94400ca90 2016-04-12 19:41:27.148+0000: 15224: info : virObjectRef:296 : OBJECT_REF: obj=0x7fb94400ca90 2016-04-12 19:41:27.148+0000: 15224: info : virObjectUnref:259 : OBJECT_UNREF: obj=0x7fb94400ca90 2016-04-12 19:41:27.148+0000: 15224: info : virObjectRef:296 : OBJECT_REF: obj=0x7fb94400ca90 2016-04-12 19:41:27.151+0000: 15224: info : virObjectUnref:259 : OBJECT_UNREF: obj=0x7fb94400ca90 2016-04-12 19:41:27.151+0000: 15224: info : virObjectRef:296 : OBJECT_REF: obj=0x7fb860000e30 2016-04-12 19:41:27.151+0000: 15224: info : virEventPollUpdateHandle:152 : EVENT_POLL_UPDATE_HANDLE: watch=58 events=15 2016-04-12 19:41:27.151+0000: 15224: info : qemuMonitorSend:1005 : QEMU_MONITOR_SEND_MSG: mon=0x7fb860000e30 msg={"execute":"query-status","id":"libvirt-7"} fd=-1 Looking at the dbus src, there's a 30s timeout defined here: src/util/virdbus.c:# define VIR_DBUS_METHOD_CALL_TIMEOUT_MILLIS 30 * 1000 So, for some reason libvirt is trying to call a dbus method before every KVM instance start. This leads to absurdly long startup times. This behavior was not present in 1.3.1. My workaround was to just recompile with '--with-firewalld=no --with-dbus=no', which seems to have worked. There's not really anything useful for libvirt to be talking to via dbus (in our environment), so no big loss there.

[libvirt-users] add external access to routed dnsmasq
by Jeff 11 Apr '16

11 Apr '16

I have created a routed virtual network. From within the routed net, DNS requests to the dnsmasq interface virbr2 work fine. On the libvirt host, DNS requests to the dnsmasq interface virbr2 work fine. I would like to allow external hosts, on the same network as the libvirt host, to query the dnsmasq interface. However external DNS queries to the virbr2 interface time out. The iptables firewall for this interface and port look clear. question: How to enable external dns queries to my routed virtual network? my config: dnsmasq-2.66-14.el7_1.x86_64 libvirt-1.2.17-13.el7_2.3.x86_64 thanks, Jeff

[libvirt-users] libvirtd vs XDG_RUNTIME_DIR
by Lars Kellogg-Stedman 09 Apr '16

09 Apr '16

I ran into an odd problem today. I wanted to share it here in the hopes of maybe saving someone else some lost time. When you run libvirtd as an unprivileged user (e.g., if you target qemu:///session from a non-root account), then libvirt will open a unix domain socket in one of two places: - If XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is defined, then inside $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/libvirt/libvirt-sock - If XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is *not* defined, then inside $HOME/.cache/libvirt/libvirt-sock With a CentOS 7 system, at least, if you ssh directly into an account, XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is set. But! If you `su -` to the account from root, e.g: # su - stack Then XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is *not* set. The problem is a little subtle, because most operations you will perform will work just fine in both cases: you can query for defined but not active guests, storagep pools, volumes, and so forth without a problem and you'll get the same answer. The problem crops up when you start a guest, which results in a persistent libvirtd process. Now, depending on how you got to your account, you will either (a) talk to the persistent process, and you'll be able to see the running guests, or (b) you'll end up spawning a new ephemeral libvirtd process listening in the *other* location, and you won't see anything, and you will wonder why there is a qemu process running for your guest but it's not showing up in "virsh list" and what the heck is going on here. I don't know if there's a good solution to this, but the failure mode is really non-obvious. Cheers, -- Lars Kellogg-Stedman <lars(a)redhat.com> | larsks @ {freenode, twitter, github} Cloud Engineering / OpenStack | http://blog.oddbit.com/

[libvirt-users] Domain, volume and storage-pool
by Shahar Havivi 07 Apr '16

07 Apr '16

Hi, I am using virStorageVolDownload to download volumes for the VDSM project. What is the best approch to know domains volume? Is there an api for associating domain to its pool and then to its volumes? I was able to do that by iterating the pools and then iterating all its volume..., is there a better way? Thank you, Shahar Havivi.

[libvirt-users] Encrytped USB devices
by Daniel Vázquez 05 Apr '16

05 Apr '16

Hi here! How libvirt virsh solves attachment of hot plug/unplug encrytped USB devices?? We've no problems attaching full encrypted(LUKS) usb disk or memory pen to guest using virsh attach-disk command. But not working using virsh attach-device to use USB pass-through and hot plug/unplug features. USB pass-through works properly without encryption. Any procedure to make it working?, attach-disk expects for a static source (for example /dev/sdX), and we need some dynamical source assigment due USB temporal and different host target, it's why we're trying the attachment via attach-device to take advantage of plug/unplug via USB pass-through, but only works on non-encrypted usb devices. We unknow if exist any alternatively way to make attach-disk more dinamically, maybe by udev script or uuid source identification and some re-attach procedure, any recommendation?? or virsh command direct solution?? Thanks P.D. Please be free to move at libvir-list(a)redhat.com (for development) if it's a new requested feature or fixing.

[libvirt-users] Can you get page dirtying information on non-migrating VMs?
by tfcyundlim dehasawzdg 04 Apr '16

04 Apr '16

Hello everyone, I've been looking through the libvirt API to get information about memory page dirtying of VMs. I need these to aid decisions on which VM to migrate. The only thing I found is virDomainGetJobStats() with VIR_DOMAIN_JOB_MEMORY_DIRTY_RATE but that only works when a migration is already running. Is there a way to get information on VMs which are not already migrating? Thanks and best regards, Dave

[libvirt-users] LXC don't support network type of ethernet
by Pradeep kumar 04 Apr '16

04 Apr '16

Hi All, Applied patch from below link in order to add ethernet network type support to LXC. https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2016-January/msg00318.html Launching LXC based VM using openstack Icehouse release which uses libvirt in background fails with below error: LOG shows "*error : virNetDevVethCreate:196 : internal error: Failed to allocate free veth pair after 10 attempts*" and also gives* ret == -1 for* *virNetDevVethCreate which depicts that "**virNetDevVethCreate" failed.* But by defining XML file manually using *virsh* *utility* I am able to launch LXC based VM successfully with network type Ethernet. *Something went wrong while launching the same with openstack nova. * Please help as I am quite new to this virtualization world. Its urgent any help/pointers are welcome. Thanks Pradeep Kumar Regards Pradeep Kumar

[libvirt-users] hanging libvirtd 1.2.17 centos7
by Philippe D'Anjou 03 Apr '16

03 Apr '16

Hi,I am having an issue on several KVM hosts which run CentOs7 and libvirt-daemon-1.2.17-13.el7_2.3.x86_64 .About once a week the libvirtd hangs forever and becomes unresponsive, the only help is to restart it. I attached gdb to it and the output of it can be seen at the end of the mail. Laine from the irc channel suggests it has to do with dbus/policykit. If anybody got an idea what it could be and point me in the right direction or help further analyzing this issue I'd be very grateful. kind regards Philippe d'Anjou (gdb) thread apply all bt Thread 16 [libvirt-users] dynamic_ownership behavior with volumes
by Hyeonseop Lee 02 Apr '16

02 Apr '16

Hi, I'm having troubles with volume ownership. When I configure domain with disk type='file', dynamic_ownership works fine, the owner of image file changes into libvirt-qemu:kvm. However when I add the image file as a libvirt volume (in default pool) and configure domain with disk type=volume, the owner of image file remains root:root. Actually, libvirt seems to be changing the owner into root:root even after I manually changed it. Is this intended behavior? If so, what is preferred way to set ownership of volume image files, instead of running qemu as root? FYI, I'm using libvirt 1.2.2 on Ubuntu 14.04. Thank you!

[libvirt-users] Using virDomainInterfaceAddresses
by Marin Bek 01 Apr '16

01 Apr '16

Hi, I'm trying to use virDomainInterfaceAddresses to get interface info for XEN DOMs but keep getting following error: libvirt: Domain Config error : this function is not supported by the connection driver: virDomainInterfaceAddresses I tried recompiling libvirt with ./configure --with-interface --with-network and it all went fine but still no luck. Am i missing something? Thanks, Marin

[libvirt-users] How is calculate the lock with lockd_manager
by villeneu＠kassis.univ-brest.fr 01 Apr '16

01 Apr '16

Hello I use lock_manager with libvirt 1.3 and I would like to know how is exactly calculate the hash SHA256. I would create a table to retreive the name with the hash in case of crash to release manualy the lock. I do an sha256 hash from /var/lib/libvirt/images/lock/MyVM.img but I don't get the same hash code form virtlockd ? Any Ideas ? Best regards ----- PS: sorry for my previous mail it was in a wrong thread

[libvirt-users] Accessing xenstore from libvirt
by Marin Bek 31 Mar '16

Hi, is it possible to access xenstore through libvirt? Or at least any other programatic means other than calling xenstore-read/write through shell? I understand it is somewhat of a security risk but still... Thanks, Marin

[libvirt-users] p2v a single bootable partition
by arnaud.bougeard＠univ-rennes1.fr 31 Mar '16

31 Mar '16

Hello How to convert a bootable linux partition to virtual disk ? I tried : |dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/mnt/mydisk3/sda1.raw| |||qemu-img convert -f raw -O qcow2 sda1.raw sda1.qcow2| |but the disk ||sda1.qcow2|is not bootable The second partition contains data and is very large, so I want to check the process with the system partition Arnaud

[libvirt-users] libvirt hooks deadlocks and auto-restarting a stopped guest
by Fred Clift 30 Mar '16

30 Mar '16

All, Short version: I want to auto-restart a particular guest any time it shuts down. libvirt hooks can't call 'virsh start foo'. What is a good/simple way to do this? Long version: I have what is probably an unusual set of requirements. To summarize briefly: I have an OS image that runs 3rd party binaries that I can't modify. These binaries occasionally get they system into a state that can not be resolved by restarting the software. We can detect the error state, but not prevent it or fix either the OS or the software. (The joys of closed-source software... sigh.) For a long time this has been running on real hardware, and a small monitor was written that will initiate a reboot of the system when it gets in that state. I ALSO use a custom qemu command line option: -snapshot so that I throw away all changes each time the system shuts down. These are all part of a compute cluster and no non-transient data is ever on these systems. What I'm trying to do: use snapshots AND on every OS boot, start fresh from the base image. It works if I give two custom options to qemu-kvm (-snapshot -no-reboot). Everytime I shut the system down, and then start it, I get back to the starting image. But if the error happens, I either shut down (with the -no-reboot option) and stay down, or I do a warm-boot and dont discard all filesystem changes. So this looked to me like a place to use libvirt hooks (Centos 7, I had to create /etc/libvirt/hooks and restart the libvirtd service). I made a qemu hook that watches for this dom name to get a release event so that I could auto-restart it. Of course you probably already know what I didn't - you can't call 'virsh start' safely from a libvirt hook. So, how can I make libvirt auto restart a dom? a libvirt hook doesn't seem to be the way. Several options occur: I might make the hook spawn something in the background that sleeps 5 seconds and then does a virsh start - presumably some time after the hook script exits. This seems somewhat problematic, and not reliable. I could make a cron-job that checks every minute and just restarts it. I'd like the restart to be faster than an average of 30 seconds though. I could replace the <emulator>/.....</emulator> in the dom definition with a script that wraps the real emulator in a loop, maybe... I could write an libvirt api consuming application that watches for the right events (reboot and shutdown) and then does the right thing. Other ideas? Fred Clift

But when VMs crash abnormaly or freeze ( see the sreenshot I missed to attach it yesterday ) there is no way to unlease or remove the locks, they are presents even if I kill the process qemu and I can't restart the VM because the lock is still here. So I try now lock-manager, but do you know exactly how the lock is calculate . In case of problem I want to be able to retrieve the lock coupled with the VM. I have seen that it is a hash SHA256 of the path and the name, but if a try to do by the hand a sha256 of the complete path of the VM I don't have the correct value ( the same value as lock_manager ). Any Ideas ? Thanks crash1.png crash2.png
