Friends: I need some help and guidance from you regarding this virt-install issue I am seeing. OS : SuseEnterpriseLinuxServer (SLES) 12 Service Pack 1 virt-install version on the box virtual@SLES12-bare:~> virt-install --version 1.2.1 libvirt version : libvirt-1.3.4-565.1.x86_64 What I tried: ========= I tried to start virt-install as regular user and I am seeing errors listed below. If I start the same with sudo it works (the user virtual shown here is a sudo enabled user) I really want to start the virt-install as a regular user. Please help. [libvirt-users] Dump network traffic from each VM.

Hi guys, Does anybody know how to dump the network trafic from each virtual machine using libvirt? Here, we usually use VPN softwares and other network tools inside Virtual Machines (Windows and Linux). Sometimes, this applications does not work properly, so we need to dump the network traffic of each Virtual Machine to compare and debug. How can I enable it using libvirt? I know that if you use a QEMU instance, you can enable the dump using "-netdev dump,...". Thanks! :-) Julio Cesar Faracco

[libvirt-users] Need help for block committing

Hi all. Can snapshots of identical images being blocked committed to the base images that are not the original ones? For example, suppose I have base0 and made a snapshot of it called SN0, then I copy base0 as base0', can SN0 be block committed into base0'? I think it's possible in theory but the block commit command just takes vm, base, and top as parameters, since the snapshot file is taken from another image I don't think I can use this command to do what I want. Or can I use qemu-img to do this? Thanks.

[libvirt-users] host freeze when starting VM

Hi together, when I´m starting a VM my host freezes gradually. This seems to happen because its running out of memory and no other process is able to do anything. I have 16GB of ram in total. 8GB are reserved for hugepages. So for the daily business on the host I have 8GB left. I don´t run many or extraordinary consuming software on the host - normally just a gnome session and the chromium browser. Right now htop tells me that 10.1 of 15.4 GB are occupied, so that should be about 2GB, because I suppose 8GB are just reserved for the hugepages. I don´t have any swap space. In my latest attempt I gave a newly created VM 64MB of ram and this also brought the system down to its knees. So I would like to understand why this is happening. Is it some configuration issue I'm not aware of or maybe even some bug? Can someone give any idea on this? Thanks in advance Alex

Hi I'm testing cmt event of libvirt, and I have two questions. I will be very grateful if someone can give me some help. Q1:"virsh domstats --perf" and linux perf tool has different result. Friends: I am new to this and don't flame me yet. Here is what I am facing. I installed libvirt stuff and then I run virt-manager to create a vm. When I run the virt-manager I am seeing issue Namespace GtkVnc not available for version 2.0 How do I interact with the console screen so I can hit Enter key and do <ALT + F2> etc., ? Is virt-manager my only choice ? How to use VNC to connect to the virt-manager screen, not the VM's console ? ============= Can I create VM with virsh and then set vnc for that and connect to that with VNC ? -Narahari

Hi I'm trying to create a volume in an existing storage pool using python by calling createXML() on the pool object. [libvirt-users] [Ceph] blockInfo cannot work with network type disk

Hi devs & users, The Telemetry service of OpenStack, project code name Ceilometer, is using libvirt.domain.blockInfo() to get disk's physical, allocation and capacity information [1]. However, when disk is network type with protocol ceph, the blockInfo() always fail with: libvirtError: internal error: missing storage backend for network files using rbd protocol. [2] After reading some libvirt code, I think it might due to blockInfo() always assume disk is file backend [3], and file backend doesn't support network type [4]. I want to know if such limitation is by design? - If yes, then how should I get the network type disk's physical, allocation and capacity info? - If not, is there any plan to implement it? Thanks! Hello All, I think I have seen this in previous bugs. Trying to live backup qcow2 images. I am able to virsh snapshot-create-as and virsh domblklist shows correct new source, but I am unable to commit back changes to qcow base. I get the above error. Libvirt at 1.2.2-0ubuntu13.1.17 Qemu is (2.0.0+dfsg-2ubuntu1.22) I tried compiling latest libvirt, but cannot get it to connect to socket on installed binaries Anyone get this working on Ubuntu 14.04?

This is frustrating: $ export LIBVIRT_DEFAULT_URI=qemu+ssh://remotehost/session $ virsh list error: failed to connect to the hypervisor error: no valid connection error: Operation not supported: Connecting to session instance without socket path is not supported by the ssh connection driver Has there been any thought given to making this easier? It seems that having a simple helper script on the remote host that could make the same "use $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR or use $HOME/.confg" decision as libvirtd would be able determine the socket path automatically. Would that be a reasonable solution? I see that right now, even support for qemu://remotehost/system requires that "virsh" knows that path to the remote socket, so having a remote helper that can read the libvirt configuration might simplify things in general. Hi, all. I've set up an LXC container for various Openstack admin chores, and now I'm being asked to have it used for importing qcow2 images -- on which we want to run utilities like virt-sparsify and virt-sysprep, first. Sadly, when I do that, it dies horribly, e.g., root@openstack-cli:/tmp# virt-sysprep -a cloud-image.qcow2 Examining the guest ... libguestfs: warning: supermin-helper -f checksum returned a short string Fatal error: exception Guestfs.Error("cannot find any suitable libguestfs supermin, fixed or old-style appliance on LIBGUESTFS_PATH (search path: /usr/lib/guestfs)") Is there a way around this? Or is the answer, "Don't do that in a container"? [libvirt-users] Networking issues with lxc containers in AWS EC2

I've created an EC2 AMI for AWS that essentially represents a CentOS 7 "hypervisor" image. I deploy instances of these in AWS and create an number of libvirt based lxc containers on each of these instances. The containers run fine within a single host and have no problem communicating with themselves as well as with their host, and vice versa. However, containers hosted in one EC2 instance cannot communicate with containers hosted in another EC2 instance. We've tried various tweaks with our Amazon VPC but have been unable to find a way to solve this networking issue. If I use something like VMware or KVM and create VMs using this same hypervisor image, the containers running under these VMs can communicate with with each other, even across different hosts. My real question is has anyone tried deploying EC2 images that host containers and have figured out how to successfully communicate between containers on different hosts? Peter

Has anyone seen this issue? We're running containers under CentOS 7.2 and some of these containers are reporting incorrect memory allocation in /proc/meminfo. The output below comes from a system with 32G of memory and 84GB of swap. [libvirt-users] Managing VMs across multiple physical hosts

Hello List, We’re currently managing VMs across approximately 26 physical hosts. We tend to migrate VMs around a lot to do things like spread load and keep VMs running when physical hosts are in need of package updates. Suffice it to say sometimes finding out which physical host a VM is currently running on can be a pain. Anyone know of an open source tool that will give me a snapshot of what’s running where across a list of physical hosts? Doesn’t have to be anything fancy. A command-line utility will do. Hello since I changed my hypervisor from centos 6.3 to Fedora-23 I had many problems with differents VMs. Very often once by day ( I have about 150 VM ), some VMs crash or freeze indifferently and I got messages like this on console. [<fffffffff8800a0ead>] :jbd:journal_get_write_access+0x22/0x33 ;;;; [<fffffffff800013ccd>] :ext3:ext3_dirty_inode+0x63/0x7b And so the VM is crashed and can't be accessed but often the ping command can respond Before my migration I never meet these problems, It 's strictly the same VMs between the 6.3 and fedora23 release. I just changed the parameter : <type arch='x86_64' machine='rhel-6.0.0'>hvm</type> to <type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-i440fx-2.4'>hvm</type> and do a virsh define I tried some other version of the parameters without success. and I also added a lockd manager in fedora23. If I restart the libvirtd the virsh command just hang and never remove the VM from the list. The only seems to reboot the hypervisor but all the VMs in production too. Is there a way to remove the process qemu in defunct state without reboot the hypervisor. Perhaps the probleme come from the VM parameters which have been created on 6.3 Centos and libvirt <1.0 version. Do I need to convert some other parameters ? I 'am trying to put a new hypervisor in aFailed to terminate process X with SIGKILL: Device or resource busy version level less than fedora23 perhaps a Centos 7.2 to see what 's happen and if there is a problem like mine. In the "other" LXC project (linuxcontainers.org) you can map a host's physical ethernet interface to a container, e.g. lxc.network.type = phys lxc.network.flags = up lxc.network.link = eth1 lxc.network.name = eth1 Is there an equivalent option for doing this with libvirt lxc? Peter

Apologies if this has been gone over, but I believe I have checked the intertubes more than a bit..... I am using libvirt and have vms booting under an OVMF.fd to use an efi firmware. I can create vms, linux ubuntu, and they will boot up. However, everytime I reboot am I dropped into the default efi shell provide by the tianocore build. Then I must walk the FS to the booting efi app and run, in this case grubx64.efi, to actually finish booting the host. I had tried adding boot entries with efibootmgr within the OS and also bcfg with the efi shell. I get no errors when adding an entry, and the new entry shows up and I can manipulate the entry i.e. set it to next boot and the like. Soon as I reboot I get dumped back to efi shell. Am I missing something? Are the var changes not being stored? Is there someplace to look for an error perhaps? I also can use the same efi bootloader under libvirt to boot a hybrid iso. location of the efi application on the hybrid iso is /EFI/boot/bootx64.efi. Drops me right into my grub menu, after falling thru from EFI FLOPPY1 and EFI FLOPPY2 to EFI DVD So since that was/is working, tried adding that to my efi partition so it has /EFI/boot/bootx64.efi. The thinking being that since I can't add an entry, I will setup for the "known" efi boot path. [libvirt-users] Create multiple domains from single saved domain state (is UUID/name fixed?)

Hi, I would like to save a running domain (ie. disk + memory) and be able to restore it multiple times creating duplicates of the orignal domain all starting from the same state. Use case: I'm building a task-processing system for use in a CI flow. I want to run multiple VMs in parallel using the same image (always starting from the same state). And to avoid needlessly booting between each task, I would like to save (and distribute) the domain state, so that I just restore from memory. However, I can't seems to change the UUID or the name of a domain once it is saved. Nor do I seem able to rename a domain while it is running. I can obviously duplicate both the disks and the file to which I saved the domain state using "virsh save". But I seem unable to rename before I restore.. Any ideas? Could I do this with snapshots? I suspect not since I see virDomainSnapshotRedefinePrep() calling virDomainDefCheckABIStability which raises the error here: https://fossies.org/dox/libvirt-1.3.3/domain__conf_8c_source.html#l17991 Out of curiosity does anyone know what horrors might befall me if I were to remove the lines protecting against name and UUID changes? Then compile my own libvirt... The comment in the code says name can be changed, but I'm guessing I would have to change the UUID too. Does anyone see how that would create issues? Hi, I'm facing problems trying to get a full dump of a VM machine on ESXi 6.0, using libvirt 1.3.3. When I try to do: virsh$: dump vm_machine dump.dmp I get the following error: this function is not supported by the connection driver: virDomainCoreDump Is there any way to get dumps of VM's? Hi. Is it possible to make a virtual disk unaffected by snapshots just like writethrough disks in VBox? I tried raw with shareable flag, but snapshot creation fails with: "internal snapshot for disk vdb unsupported for storage type raw".
