[libvirt-users] ergodox keyboard not working on USB hostdev passthrough
by Paul Handy 16 Nov '16

16 Nov '16

I'm using a bit of a different keyboard, the infinity ergodox [ https://input.club/devices/infinity-ergodox/] It functions just fine as a keyboard on my host computer, but when I try to bind it to the guest, nothing seems to happen. lsusb gives its ID: Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub *Bus 005 Device 003: ID 1c11:b04d* Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 003: ID 258a:0001 Bus 001 Device 002: ID 093a:2521 Pixart Imaging, Inc. Optical Mouse Bus 001 Device 004: ID 8087:0a2b Intel Corp. Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub So, I made a file, hostdev-1c11:b04d.xml, which contains the following: <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='usb' > <source> <vendor id='0x1c11'/> <product id='0xb04d'/> </source> </hostdev> Note, I have had this same xml inside the domain's xml, but have pulled it out separately so that I could run: virsh attach-device linux-x86_64 hostdev-1c11:b04d.xml It appears to attach the device, as it becomes visible in the domain's lsusb: Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 *Bus 003 Device 003: ID 1c11:b04d * Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Bus 002 Device 003: ID 093a:2521 Bus 002 Device 002: ID 258a:0001 Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 The mouse works just fine. I bought a cheap keyboard to test out, and it works just fine. My pet keyboard, however, doesn't work on the guest. Nothing seems to register. Any ideas here what I could do? Drivers? ROM's? I've tried both SeaBIOS and OVMF with no difference in outcome, and while this appears to be a hardware problem, I don't know where to begin. Thanks, Paul

[libvirt-users] how to use command 'guest-file-open' for Windows server 2012R2 vm
by 刘梦可 09 Nov '16

09 Nov '16

hello, I am using libvirt 1.2.17 on CentOS 7.2 - kernel 3.10.0-327.13.1.el7.x86_64. The command guest-file-open failed to open with error "this feature or command is not currently supported", the detail is as below: virsh qemu-agent-command instance-00000015 "{\"execute\":\"guest-file-open\", \"arguments\":{\"path\":\"\tmp.txt\",\"mode\":\"r\"}}" error: internal error: unable to execute QEMU agent command 'guest-file-open': this feature or command is not currently supported. The guest instance-00000015 is a Windows server 2012R2, and I installed the qemu-guest-agent by the file qemu-ga-x64.msi from virtio-win-0.1.126. It can be running in guest. Doesn't the qemu-guest-agent in Windows VM support guest-file-* commands? How or when can I use the command guest-file-* command? Thanks very much!! -mkliu28

[libvirt-users] Guest startup process blocks if a hook's child process is still running (i.e : after forking)
by Nicolas Roy-Renaud 08 Nov '16

08 Nov '16

I've been having issues with KVM lately where I sometimes put my host into sleep while a guest is still running, which prevents it from waking up properly. This is somewhat expected due to my setup, but I have mistakenly done this more than once and could use a workaround to stop this from happening. So I've been trying to setup a libvirt hook to fork an instance of systemd-inhibit when the start hook is called and keep it running until the shutdown hook is called. This seems to work well when I run the hook script in a normal bash shell, but running it through libvirt simply blocks the starting process until systemd-inhibit quits. Here's the script : LOCK_FILE="/tmp/vfio-lock-$OBJECT" if [ "$OPERATION" == "start" ]; then ( touch "$LOCK_FILE"; systemd-inhibit --what="sleep" \ --who="libvirt" \ --mode="block" \ inotifywait -qq -e delete "$LOCK_FILE" ) & disown $! exit fi if [ "$OPERATION" == "shutdown" ]; then rm "$LOCK_FILE" fi Is there some way to make it so libvirt sees the hook script exiting and carries on with the rest of its guest startup process even after a process fork or would that require changes in the internal hook handling functions? - Nicolas

[libvirt-users] Sharing network namespace between containers
by Harish Vishwanath 08 Nov '16

08 Nov '16

Hello Based on the lxc driver documentation, I am trying to create an xml to share an existing network namespace with another container. I am running libvirt 1.2.15. Here is the xml: <domain type='lxc' xmlns:lxc='http://libvirt.org/schemas/domain/lxc/1.0'> <name>nt</name> <uuid>43c00192-e114-4e29-8ce7-4b5487f60a75</uuid> <memory unit='KiB'>65536</memory> <currentMemory unit='KiB'>65536</currentMemory> <vcpu placement='static'>1</vcpu> <cputune> <shares>2000</shares> </cputune> <resource> <partition>/apphosting.partition</partition> </resource> <os> <type arch='x86_64'>exe</type> <init>/sbin/init</init> </os> <clock offset='utc'/> <on_poweroff>destroy</on_poweroff> <on_reboot>restart</on_reboot> <on_crash>destroy</on_crash> <devices> <emulator>/usr/lib/libvirt/libvirt_lxc</emulator> <filesystem type='mount' accessmode='passthrough'> <source dir='/work/repo-lxc/nt/rootfs_mnt'/> <target dir='/'/> </filesystem> <filesystem type='mount' accessmode='squash'> <driver type='path' wrpolicy='immediate'/> <source dir='/local/local1/core_dir/nt'/> <target dir='/local/local1/core_dir'/> </filesystem> <console type='pty'> <target type='lxc' port='0'/> </console> </devices> * <lxc:namespace>* * <lxc:sharenet type='netns' value='node'/>* * </lxc:namespace>* </domain> However, the virsh edit is unable to save this file: error: XML document failed to validate against schema: Unable to validate doc against /usr/share/libvirt/schemas/domain.rng Element domain has extra content: namespace Failed. Try again? [y,n,i,f,?]: Is this supported in libvirt 1.2.15 - the document doesnt specify a minimum version of libvirt. Appreciate your help. Regards, Harish

HI! My goal is to run a virtualized access point with hostapd. Is it possible to use the host's WIFI interface in a VM created with libvirt? I can add the interface in bridged mode but it appears just as normal eth1 without wireless extensions. Ciao, Michael.

[libvirt-users] pci-assign fails with read error on config-space file
by Henning Schild 02 Nov '16

02 Nov '16

Hey, i am running an unusual setup where i assign pci devices behind the back of libvirt. I have two options to do that: 1. a wrapper script for qemu that takes care of suid-root and appends arguments for pci-assign 2. virsh qemu-monitor-command ... 'device_add pci-assign...' I know i should probably not be doing this, it is a workaround to introduce fine-grained pci-assignment in an openstack setup, where vendor and device id are not enough to pick the right device for a vm. In both cases qemu will crash with the following output: > qemu: hardware error: pci read failed, ret = 0 errno = 22 followed by the usual machine state dump. With strace i found it to be a failing read on the config space file of my device. /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:xx:xx.x/config A few reads out of that file succeeded, as well as accesses on vendor etc. Manually launching a qemu with the pci-assign works without a problem, so i "blame" libvirt and the cgroup environment the qemu ends up in. So i put a bash into the exact same cgroup setup - next to a running qemu, expecting a dd or hexdump on the config-space file to fail. But from that bash i can read the file without a problem. Has anyone seen that problem before? Right now i do not know what i am missing, maybe qemu is hitting some limits configured for the cgroups or whatever. I can not use pci-assign from libvirt, but if i did would it configure cgroups in a different way or relax some limits? What would be a good next step to debug that? Right now i am looking at kernel event traces, but the machine is pretty big and so is the trace. That assignment used to work and i do not know how it broke, i have tried combinations of several kernels, versions of libvirt and qemu. (kernel 3.18 and 4.4, libvirt 1.3.2 and 2.0.0, and qemu 2.2.1 and 2.7) All combinations show the same problem, even the ones that work on other machines. So when it comes to software versions the problem could well be caused by a software update of another component, that i got with the package manager and did not compile myself. It is a debian 8.6 with all recent updates installed. My guess would be that systemd could have an influence on cgroups or limits causing such a problem. regards, Henning

[libvirt-users] pass-through hwrng
by lejeczek 01 Nov '16

01 Nov '16

hi all I have in my centos 7 this: crw-------. 1 root root 10, 183 Oct 11 21:28 /dev/hwrng and VM fails, complains like this: virsh # start volatile-work6 error: Failed to start domain volatile-work6 error: internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor: 2016-10-19T09:42:05.988142Z qemu-kvm: -object rng-random,id=objrng0,filename=/dev/hwrng: Could not open '/dev/hwrng': Permission denied which reads logical. Now - is this normal that hwrng is created with these permissions? And if yes then how to pass-through it to the VMs? How to aid VMs with hardware random numbers generator? many thanks. L

[libvirt-users] How do you set real time bandwidth for a container?
by Peter Steele 30 Oct '16

30 Oct '16

When I create a VM using libvirt, the VM comes up the path /sys/fs/cgroup/cpu/cpu.rt_runtime_us set to something like 1000000. When I create a container however, the path /sys/fs/cgroup/cpu/cpu.rt_runtime_us is 0. This prevents my containers from being able to run any real time applications. I have to explicitly echo a value into this field in order to give the container some real time bandwidth and allow it to run real time processes. Is it possible to define this in a container's XML config? Or is there another method I should be using to enable real time capability in a container? Peter

Hi all, thanks so far for your time and ideas. Please find the gdb output and also the debug-output of libvirt (as requested by Michal Privoznik and Laine Stump) here: https://paste.xinu.at/m-gPSHl/ On 10/19/2016 01:58 AM, Michal Privoznik wrote: > Those "Network is already in use by interface virbr1" error messages > worry me. If so, what's their content? Laine was already correct about that, this error message only appears when I manually try to restart libvirt after it already hung up. Maybe I should've made that more clear. Additionaly, no, there are no files in that directory, also I am pretty sure that I only got one instance of libvirt running According to the GDB log, the libvirt process is endlessly iterating over [1]. Any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks in advance Regards Rene [1] = https://github.com/libvirt/libvirt/blob/master/src/network/bridge_driver.c#…

[libvirt-users] Failed to launch libvirt 1.2.7
by Marina Danial 25 Oct '16

25 Oct '16

Hello, I am currently working on Redhat 6 - Kernel 2.6.32-358.el6.x86_64. It has by default libvirt 0.10.2. I wanted version 1.2.7. So I downloaded this and libvirt-1.2.7.tar.gz and I followed the following steps: 1. ./configure (with its default settings) 2. make 3. make install Currently, the installation is in: /usr/local and the source tree is in /export/home/libvirt. I stopped the previously installed daemon so that the new one takes effect. I launched the daemon from /export/home/libvirt/daemon/libvirtd -d. However every time I launch the C++ code, this message appears: libvir: XML-RPC error : Failed to connect socket to '/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock': No such file or directory Failed to open connection to qemu:///system My questions are: 1. How can I launch the daemon from the source tree? It does not behave as it should when it is launched from /etc/init.d 2. How can any application e.g. virt-manager look at the new paths of the newly installed libvirt? 3. How can I get libvirt to work from the source tree as if it was originally installed in Redhat? Thanks Marina

HI! Disclaimer: I'm a libvirt beginner using it for managing virtual machines based on qemu-kvm. Is there any documentation describing how to harden libvirt/qemu-kvm installations? Escpecially how to improve isolation of VMs: - secure time sync (with or without ntpd?) - random number generation - running VMs as different host OS users I do not need general OS hardening advice. Ciao, Michael.

[libvirt-users] Passing "migratable=no" to qemu in domain's XML
by Žilvinas Žaltiena 20 Oct '16

20 Oct '16

Hi, I want to use Invariant TSC with qemu, and to do that qemu must get the following args: "-cpu host, migratable=no,+invtsc". invtsc works only if migratable=no is passed too. The "+invtsc" part is sucessfully handled by using <feature name="invtsc"/> inside domain's XML, however I don't how/where to put the "migratable=no" there. Is there an elegant way to pass "migratable=no" to qemu via domain's XML without using <qemu:arg/> tags?

[libvirt-users] Libvirt newer than 2.1.0 doesnt start up
by Rene Pasing 19 Oct '16

19 Oct '16

Hi all, I have some problems with libvirt >2.1.0 (so 2.2.0 and 2.3.0): I have a working environment using libvirt 2.1.0 with 1 domain (called "mail") and one network (called "default6"), both are autostarted. I have no problems with this environment using libvirt 2.1.0, everything works great. But after (testwise) updating to libvirt 2.2.0 or 2.3.0, libvirt doesn't start up anymore. Some investigations showed that apparently my "default6" network is the problem. Libvirt is starting correctly after disabling all autostarts. When I then virsh' into the system daemon and type "net-start default6", then nothing happens and that command just hangs infinitely. Further information, relevant log entries and e.g. the used default6.xml configuration file can be found here, as I first thought it would be a configuration error from my side: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1653221 Do you maybe have an idea what could be going on? Or do you maybe need more information, and if yes, which exactly? Thanks in advance Regards Rene

[libvirt-users] How to tell spicy client to use SASL authentication?
by mordenkainen 13 Oct '16

13 Oct '16

I'm using libvirt in desktop environment. Single host machine, pair of users, a few guest machines. The first thought was that unix socket restricted to specific group is just enough for authentication. But virsh has the power like sudo: you could define pool on real device and write anything on it. So I decided to authenticate with password for each virsh use. I'm using SASL + saslauthd + PAM for that case. /etc/sasl2/libvirt.conf: mech_list: PLAIN pwcheck_method: saslauthd /etc/sasl2/qemu.conf: mech_list: PLAIN pwcheck_method: saslauthd /etc/pam.d/libvirt: auth requisite pam_listfile.so item=group sense=allow file=/etc/libvirt/allow_group auth required pam_tally2.so onerr=succeed auth required pam_nologin.so auth required pam_unix.so try_first_pass likeauth nullok account requisite pam_listfile.so item=group sense=allow file=/etc/libvirt/allow_group account required pam_nologin.so account required pam_unix.so /etc/pam.d/qemu: auth requisite pam_listfile.so item=group sense=allow file=/etc/libvirt/allow_group auth required pam_tally2.so onerr=succeed auth required pam_nologin.so auth required pam_unix.so try_first_pass likeauth nullok account requisite pam_listfile.so item=group sense=allow file=/etc/libvirt/allow_group account required pam_nologin.so account required pam_unix.so They are two identical configs for libvirt and for qemu. The first works flawlessly. virsh prompts for user and password and then login me to the shell. But spicy fails. It prompts only for the password and fails after receiving it leaving error message in syslog: Oct 13 23:24:21 paladin spicy[9001]: GSSAPI client step 1 What are the supposed actions I should perform to get further debug informations?

[libvirt-users] problem with disk virtio driver

I just ran into a problem I can't make heads or tails of, so I'm hoping to get some help here. I have a custom built Embedded Linux running qemu-kvm 1.1.2 and libvirt 1.2.20 I'm creating a domain with the following config: <domain type='kvm'> <name>myVM</name> <memory unit='KiB'>2097152</memory> <vcpu placement='static'>2</vcpu> <os> <type arch='x86_64'>hvm</type> <boot dev='hd'/> <boot dev='cdrom'/> </os> <features> <acpi/> <apic/> </features> <cpu mode='host-model'/> <clock offset='utc'> <timer name='rtc' tickpolicy='catchup'/> <timer name='pit' tickpolicy='delay'/> <timer name='hpet' present='no'/> </clock> <on_poweroff>destroy</on_poweroff> <on_reboot>restart</on_reboot> <on_crash>restart</on_crash> <devices> <disk type='file' device='cdrom'> <driver name='qemu' type='raw'/> <target dev='hdb' bus='ide'/> <source file='custom.iso'/> <readonly/> </disk> <disk type='file' device='disk'> <driver name='qemu' type='qcow2'/> <source file='/path/to/vdisk.img'/> <target dev='vda' bus='virtio'/> </disk> <controller type='pci' model='pci-root'/> <controller type='usb'/> <controller type='ide'/> <interface type='bridge'> <source bridge='virbr0'/> <model type='virtio'/> </interface> <serial type='pty'> <target port='0'/> </serial> <console type='pty'> <target type='serial' port='0'/> </console> <input type='tablet' bus='usb'/> <input type='mouse' bus='ps2'/> <input type='keyboard' bus='ps2'/> <graphics type='vnc' port='-1' autoport='yes'/> <video> <model type='qxl' ram='65536' vram='65536' vgamem='16384' heads='1'/> </video> <watchdog model='i6300esb' action='reset'/> <memballoon model='none'/> </devices> </domain> Granted the OS I'm installing is again a custom Linux with some software running on top ..so It's not a well known OS...but I'm hoping that does not matter much. After installation I get all sorts of kernel panics and errors about services not being able to start. So I tried the same thing on ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS which installed qemu-kvm 2.0.0 and libvirt 1.2.2 Same config xml, but this time it worked better -I was not getting the kernel panics. The OS I'm installing does not support IDE disks, it needs a virtio disk. The obvious solution here would be to try and get a newer version of qemu, but since we're talking about a custom built Linux I'd have to add the package manually and compile from source...which cakes a long time to do. So before attempting that....just wondering....is there a better way? Anything I can try? [libvirt-users] Libvirt adds extra parameters in domain XML
by Marina Danial 13 Oct '16

Hello, In my C++ code, I generate my own domain XML file and I use virDomainCreateXML or virDomainDefineXML to launch my qemu VM. However, when I get to check which commands are sent to the qemu commandline, I find that libvirt has added so many extra parameters to the ones I have already set. How can I prevent libvirt from adding any extra parameters to the ones I originally defined in the domain XML? Help will be highly appreciated. Thanks

I'm puzzled why virt-xml-checker rejects minimal config xml if it includes sysinfo element: <domain type='kvm'> <name>example</name> <sysinfo> </sysinfo> </domain> with the following error: Relax-NG validity error : Extra element sysinfo in interleave minimal.xml:3: element sysinfo: Relax-NG validity error : Element domain failed to validate content minimal.xml fails to validate I tried xmllint it gives the same output

[libvirt-users] Windows 7 guest not starting with HyperV features enabled
by Aleksei 11 Oct '16

Hi, I have a Windows 7 SP1 Pro 64-bit VM which works fine on libvirt 2.3.0 and Qemu 2.7.0. If I enable HyperV features (https://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementsFeatures) like "relaxed", "spinlocks" etc - VM doesn't boot. "Starting Windows" text appears for ~2 seconds (no flying dots, no logo) and then it just goes to black screen. If I switch HyperV features back off, it boots normally again. Running VM with debuggging enabled (virsh --log win7_hyperv.log --debug 1 start win7) doesn't produce any errors in the log. There are no logs for that attempted boot in the guest either - apparently it doesn't get to the point when Windows starts logging. Attaching VM xml definition (with HyperV features enabled). -- /--Regards, Aleksei/

[libvirt-users] Problems connecting to the libvirtd server
by Stefano Ricci 11 Oct '16

Hello everyone I do not know if it is correct address this mailing lists but I can not use libvirt. I run compile libvirt version 2.2.0 into environment lfs stable with qemu 2.7.0 and have not had any problems. The program when it starts not report any errors in the log, with activated debug level file. Only when you try to connect with the following command virsh -c qemu:///system remains hung without reporting any error either in the logs that screen. The command virsh -c test:///default list instead concludes on a regular basis. I attach the file libvirt.log and libvirt.conf Thank you Stefano Ricci
