[libvirt-users] Cache / IO Setting for qcow2 disks with prealloc=metadata?

Hello, i´ve done 2 vm with qcow2 disks and created them with qemu-img with prealloc=metadata. Virt-Manager shows me under the performance settings for the Storage, Cache= Hypervisor Default IO= Hypervisor Default Is this the best setting? Or do i choose "native" IO on prealloc=metadata created disks? And do i have to change Cache too? The Virtualisation Host is gento linux, the qcow2 files are stored on a xfs partition, qemu is build with "xfs" Flag. thanks for hints and tipps marko -- zbfmail - Mittendrin statt nur Datei! I would like to know if there is a proper documentation for compiling libvirt for Windows. This is in regard to the latest versions of libvirt. [libvirt-users] Insert/eject USB

Is it possible to insert and eject a USB image in kvm/qemu/libvirt or are the only dynamically changeable devices cdroms and floppies? I've searched the web and I'm either not looking for the right terms or it's obscure. I should mention that I'm not talking about a connecting a physical host USB drive to a guest image, I want to be able to use a qcow image as the source. The context is that I want to be able to revert a VM image back to a prior state (internal snapshot) when testing but be able to retain some data without having to go to the effort of transferring it across the network. I've excluded cdroms as an option because they are read-only (correct me if I'm wrong on this) and require some effort to (re)build. Floppy drives appear to be limited to 1.44M which makes sense but is very limiting. Network mounts (NFS, Samba, etc.) require a server supporting the selected style of filesystem sharing over the network. I'm not sure I want to find out what happens to filesystem passthrough when a revert is done (unless someone knows and it's beneficial). I tried creating a partition associated with the VM but not auto-mounted, even if I unmounted the partition before reverting its state was rolled back. I possibly could get exotic here by setting the immutable attribute after unmounting the partition but, again, I'm hoping for something a little simpler and more straightforward. If there's a workable option I haven't considered I'm open to that. Thanks for any input.

Hello I'm trying to find out how to detect if domain was destroyed and brought up between two time moments, let's call it reads. So far the best approach I could find is to compare domain ID from previous and current read. And this is my first question : is that reliable solution ? Or do you know any better ? And related question is how to resolve virDomainPtr into domain ID ? The only verified way of getting domain ID I know is to memorize it's UUID, then call virConnectListDomains , then iterate over all returned domain IDs and resolve each one's pointer using virDomainLookupByID , then get UUID by virDomainGetUUIDString get domain ID of matching UUID's . It seems too complex and I expect noticeable performance overhead, so looking for something lighter. I'm trying to get current domain ID using API function : char * virDomainGetMetadata (virDomainPtr domain, int type, const char * uri, unsigned int flags) I'm not sure it's relevant function, since domain ID is contained not in metadata subsection but in opening <domain> markup. In fact I wasn't even able to get any data using that function call since I don't know how to construct valid URI. Do you know any doc or examples explaining that ? Hi, I want to create a virtual hci device on my virtual machine. I have seen that qemu has options supporting this https://qemu.weilnetz.de/doc/qemu-doc.html#Bluetooth_0028R_0029-options and https://qemu.weilnetz.de/doc/qemu-doc.html#pcsys_005fusb Is there any support for these options in libvirt? I was not able to find anything in documentation so I added the qemu command line xml as follows <qemu:commandline> <qemu:arg value='-usbdevice'/> <qemu:arg value='bt:hci'/> <qemu:arg value='-bt'/> <qemu:arg value='hci,host'/> </qemu:commandline> but when I try to run my machine from virt-manager i get the following error: Error starting domain: internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor: 2017-02-28T21:25:51.735987Z qemu-system-x86_64: -device ich9-usb-ehci1,id=usb,bus=pcie.0,addr=0x1d.0x7: PCI: slot 29 function 7 not available for ich9-usb-ehci1, in use by ich9-usb-ehci1 this error does not appear if I remove the commandline xml nodes Does anyone have any guidance for troubleshooting this? [libvirt-users] shutdown -r now hangs in qemu-/kvm-vm

Since updating app-emulation/libvirt and/or app-emulation/qemu (both were updated at the same time) I have a problem executing "shutdown -r now" in the vm ("shutdown -h now" works fine). When I execute "shutdown -r now" in the vm the shutdown process runs perfect until "Remounting root-filesystem readonly" and than it hangs and I have to "Force Power Off" to reboot. libvirt-3.0.0 When attemping to create a virtual machine I receive the error "error : Failed to switch root mount into slave mode: Permission denied”. I’m attempting to run qemu/libvirt/virt-manager in an Arch Linux lxc container on a Ubuntu 16.04 host. The host uses zfs for its containers. The arch container is set up as a priveleged container. I do already have kvm/qemu/libvirt working in a Ubuntu container. The reason for the arch container is because I want to try a newer version of qemu/libvirt. I’m not finding anything on google about this error message. Any way to get around it? [libvirt-users] "virsh list" hangs

`virsh list` hangs on my server that hosts a bunch of VMs. This might be due to the Debian upgrade I did on Feb 15, which upgrades `libvirt` from 2.4.0-1 to 3.0.0-2. I have tried restarting libvirtd for a few times, without luck. Attached below are some relevant logs; let me know if you need some more for debugging. Hi, is there a reliable way to find out to what kind of job does the information returned from virDomainGetJobStats or provided in VIR_DOMAIN_EVENT_ID_JOB_COMPLETED event callback belong to? I'm specifically interested in distinguishing host-to-host migration jobs (e.g. those started by virDomainMigrateToUri* functions) from other jobs. If there is no better way, I'm thinking about examining presence or values of certain fields in the stats. I'd be fine with that as long as I can be sure it's a reliable way to identify the job kind. Now when I am trying to shutdown the domain, all my virsh command is hanging even virt-manager remains in "connecting.." mode and is not showing active domains.When I set the libvirt debug env and call "virsh list" it hangs in poll. Hi there, is there a way to set a guest to start with a specific date and time. (e.g. when guest boots, starting guest time should always be (2017-02-05T12:00:00)). I've tried something like this in my kvm domain: <clock offset='variable' adjustment='-86400' basis='localtime'> <timer name='rtc' tickpolicy='delay' track='guest'/> <timer name='pit' tickpolicy='delay'/> <timer name='hpet' present='no'/> </clock> However, i can't insert a specific date and time statement (like starting kvm with -rtc base="2017-02-05T12:00:00"). Hi list, I would like to understand if, and why, the --unsafe flag is needed when using --copy-storage-all when migrating guests which uses writeback cache mode. Background: I want to live migrate guests with writeback cache from host A to host B and these hosts only have local storage (ie: no shared storage at all). From my understanding, --unsafe should be only required when migrating writeback-enabled guests between two hosts which share non-cluster-aware storage (ie: NFS), but it should not be necessary when not sharing storage. However, when trying to migrate from a CentOS6 host to a CentOS7 machine with command [root@source ~]# virsh migrate Totem --live --copy-storage-all --persistent --verbose qemu+ssh://root@172.31.255.11/system I have the following error: error: Unsafe migration: Migration may lead to data corruption if disks use cache != none So, my questions are: 1) it is safe to do a live migration with --copy-storage-all when guests are using writeback cache mode? 2) if so, why libvirt complains about that? 3) if not, what is the best method to migrate a running quest using writeback cache mode? `virsh list` hangs on my server that hosts a bunch of VMs. This might be due to the Debian upgrade I did on Feb 15, which upgrades `libvirt` from 2.4.0-1 to 3.0.0-2. Hi all, I write about libvirt inconsistent behavior when mixing io=native and cache=writeback. This post can be regarded as an extension, or clarification request, of BZ 1086704 (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1086704) On a fully upgraded CentOS6 x86-64 machine, starting a guest with io=native and cache=writeback is permitted: no errors are raised and the VM (qemu, really) silently use "io=threads" instead. A warning should be raised, but I find reasonable that the VM is permitted to run. On a fully upgraded CentOS7 x86-64 machine, starting a guest with io=native and cache=writeback is *not* permitted: an error is raised and the guest is not started. While it is absolutely OK to alert the user about the configuration error, I feel the VM should be started as on CentOS6. Anyway, this is not a big problem when dealing with a single host. A more concerning behavior is that when trying to migrate a guest from the very first CentOS6 machine, which starts and runs such a guest with io=native and cache=writeback without problems, to a CentOS7 host, live migration aborts with an error: [root@source] virsh migrate Totem --live --copy-storage-all --persistent --verbose --unsafe qemu+ssh://root@172.31.255.11/system error: unsupported configuration: native I/O needs either no disk cache or directsync cache mode, QEMU will fallback to aio=threads This error persists even if the VM config file is changed to use "io=threads". Of course, the running image continue to have "io=native" on its parameters list, but it does not really honor the "io=native" directive, so I find strange that live migration can not proceed. I think it is very reasonable to raise an error, but such error should not block the live migration process. In short: there is some method to live migrate a running VM configured with "io=native" (but which is really using "io=threads" internally) and "cache=writeback"? Hi, i have a vm which has a poor performance. E.g. top needs seconds to refresh its output on the console. Same with netstat. The guest is hosting a MySQL DB with a webfrontend, its response is poor too. I'm looking for the culprit. Following top in the guest i get these hints: Memory is free enough, system is not swapping. System has 8GB RAM and two cpu's. Cpu 0 is struggling with a lot of software interrupts, between 50% and 80%. Cpu1 is often waiting for IO (wa), between 0% and 20%. No application is consuming much cpu time. The vm resides on a SAN which is attached via FC. The whole system is a two node cluster. The vm resides in a raw partition without a FS, which i read should be good for the performance. It runs on the other node slow too. Inside the vm i have logical volumes (it was a physical system i migrated to a vm). Following "man iostat", the columns await and svctm seem to be important. Man says: await The average time (in milliseconds) for I/O requests issued to the device to be served. This includes the time spent by the requests in queue and the time spent servicing them. svctm The average service time (in milliseconds) for I/O requests that were issued to the device. It seems system is waiting a long time for IO. Although the amount of transfered data is small. I have some suspicions: - the lvm setup in the guest - some hardware - cache mode for the disk is "none". Otherwise i can't do a live migration. What do you think ? How can i find out from where the high si comes ? I'm using libvirt on Debian/stretch (testing) with vagrant and the vagrant-libvirt plugin. When I import a vagrant box (jessie64.box), the resulting file permssions let anyone in the "kvm" group read the img. I need to read that image in order to use qemu-img to rebase and create a new vagrant box. [libvirt-users] high memory guest issues - virsh start and QEMU_JOB_WAIT_TIME

Hi all, In IRC last night Dan helpfully confirmed my analysis of an issue we are seeing attempting to launch high memory KVM guests backed by hugepages... In this case the guests have 240GB of memory allocated from two host NUMA nodes to two guest NUMA nodes. The trouble is that allocating the hugepage backed qemu process seems to take longer than the 30s QEMU_JOB_WAIT_TIME and so libvirt then most unhelpfully kills the barely spawned guest. Dan said there was currently no workaround available so I'm now looking at building a custom libvirt which sets QEMU_JOB_WAIT_TIME=60s. I have two related questions: 1) will this change have any untoward side-effects? 2) if not, then is there any reason not to change it in master until a better solution comes along (or possibly better, alter qemuDomainObjBeginJobInternal to give a domain start job a little longer compared to other jobs)? -- Cheers, ~Blairo

Hi, I am using libvirt --> 0.10.2 and virt-manager --> 0.9.0 version (RHEL 6). Very rare I get following error message dialogue box. (Image is attached for the error dialogue box ) Error saysError polling connection:'qemu+ssh......' Internal error client socket is closed TraceBack (most recent calls)engine.py: 440 conn.tickconnection.py: 1433 self.hostinfo() = self.vmm.getinfo() Is it a problem with libvirt or with my environment Thanks in advance. Hi there, I’m trying to connect to Hyper-V on Windows using libvirt. It seems neither the libvirt binaries bundled with Virt Viewer, nor the libvirt binary in the mingw64-libvirt Rawhide RPM have support for Hyper-V. Is it likely that just downloading the source RPM and trying to build –with-hyperv would just work? Thanks, Asad

Dear all, I use libvirt lxc to host a real-time application with priority of -50. The native OS is fedora21 and lxc is also fedora21. Everything works fine. Linux "top" command shows the priority is -50). Then I use Openstack to manage lxc. The native compute node OS is CentOS7.2. and the lxc is fedora. After the real-time application is started in the lxc. top command on the native machine sees the real-time application with priority of 20, which is not what I expect. If lxc is Ubuntu, the priority of real-time application is also 20. Can anybody help me on this? Cheng Wang

Hello, I recently had to reinstall my operating system on my computer. I made a backup of the entire partition beforehand onto an external drive. Now I am trying to import a VM from that backup onto the newly installed system. What I've done so far: - copied over the qcow2 disk image - copied over the XML config file - copied over the OVMF files under /usr/share/edk2.git/ovmf-x64/ I am getting this error whenever I try to boot the VM: Error starting domain: operation failed: unable to find any master var store for loader: /usr/share/edk2.git/ovmf-x64/OVMF_CODE-pure-efi.fd The file /usr/share/edk2.git/ovmf-x64/OVMF_CODE-pure-efi.fd does exist. Hi all, I am not able to access USB as storage device in the lxc container. Having tried to pass the usb device with the product and vendor id, not able to see the device mounted in the lxc file system. However, they are seen as char devices in the container at the location. There is no issue of ACL, as the capabilities restrictions have been dropped. Has anyone successfully mounted the storage device in the libvirt. Having gone through the libvirt documentation, couldnt find further information of enabling the usb as storage device. Any pointers towards that would be useful. We've been using libvirt based containers under CentOS 7 and everything has been working fine. One application we run in our containers is ctdb, which uses SCHED_FIFO (real time) threads. This has been working without problems until our recent upgrade to CentOS 7.3. For some reason, ctdb is no longer able to create real time threads, and I've tried a simple program myself that confirms this. The same program works fine on the hypervisor so I know the kernel supports real time. Does anyone know what may have changed in CentOS 7.3 that breaks real time threads in libvirt containers? This is the simple test program I created to verify the real time threads are failing.
