Hi, am Ajay Kumar. [libvirt-users] experience with balloon memory ?

Hi ML, i'm thinking about using balloon memory for our domains. We have about 15 domains running concurrently, and i think it might be nice if a domain requires more RAM it grabs it, and if it don't need it anymore, it releases it. But i have no experience with it. So i have some questions: - is live migration possible with balloon ? - is it stable ? - the domain needs an appropriate driver i think ? - are there drivers for Windows 7 and 10 ? - are there drivers for Linux, which kernel version do i need ? - does someone have experience with it ? Is there a kind of "best practise" ? Thanks. [libvirt-users] Privacy Extension not working in VM

Hello @ all With the rebuilding of my Server from Debian 9 to Debian 10, I also switch from Virtual Box to Libvirt/KVM. Due to new requirements for the VMs, now I have an actual problem, which unfortunately I can not solve. The problem has already been discussed in the German Debian-Forum ... unfortunately also without success. The facts: - ISP = Dual Stack with daily separation - Host and VM = Debian 10 - The VMs are via macvtap-device regular LAN-Clients - IPv4 = DHCP and NAT by DSL-Router - IPv6 = GUA via RA and SLAAC (2003::/3) - IPv4 works fine in the VM - IPv6 (NDP, RA, SLAAC) works basically also fine in the VM The existing problem in the VM: - MAC-Based GUA (2000::/3) is ok, both inbound and outbound - Outbound traffic via the second GUA (PE-Based) is filtered apparently, but not via packetfiltering, I don't know where. There are no error messages. On the part of the kernel in the VM and the IPv6-stack, everything looks completely ok, no error messages, except that Outbound-Traffic by the PE-Address is quietly blocked. The MAC- Based IPv6 works unchanged and without error as before. My questions: 1. Is there a special setting for the VM, to allow the use of Privacy Extensions for IPv6 unlimited? 2. Or is that possibly even a known and at the moment unsolved problem? 3. Or is this a intended limitation of virtualization? Can anyone help me with a solution or a hint? Thank you. BR, Tom

Hi, I'm trying to add TLS migrations to oVirt, but I've hit a problem with certificate checking. oVirt uses the destination host IP address, rather than the host name, in the migration URI passed to virDomainMigrateToURI3. One reason for doing that is that a separate migration network may be used for migrations, while the host name resolves to the management network interface. But it causes a problem with certificate checking. The destination IP address is checked against the name, which is a host name, given in the destination certificate. That means there is mismatch and the migration fails. I don't think it'd be a very good idea to avoid the problem by putting IP addresses into server certificates. Is there any way to make TLS migrations working under these circumstances? For instance, SPICE remote-viewer allows the client to specify the certificate subject to expect on the host when connecting to it using an IP address. Can (or could) libvirt do something similar? Or is there any other mechanism to handle this problem? Thanks, Milan

Hi, We are trying to implement VM cloning with snapshots for ovirt. For the most part, everything seems to work fine. However, when saved-state comes into play it gets complicated. As it seems impossible to restore a saved state file for a different VM due to a mismatch in UUID and name, I was wondering if it is possible to somehow work around this? Is it a sensible thing to do? (these are essentially the same VMs in terms of configuration and disk content) Is there a better approach to cloning a VM entirely (with snapshots and memory)? Thanks!

Hi, i have atwo node HA-cluster with pacemaker, corosync, libvirt and KVM. Recently i configured a new VirtualDomain which runs fine, but live Migration does not succeed. Hi, I followed the instructions on the wiki https://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Live-disk-backup-with-active-blockcommit for a live disk backup. Unfortunately this is not working when the domain is offline because the active blockcommit throws error: Requested operation is not valid: domain is not running For my use case it should be possible for the domain to shut down while the backup is in progress. I'm looking for a way to shorten the backing chain after the backup finishes and the domain is offline. Is there a way to let libvirt decide wether to shorten the backing chain using blockcommit or some alternative way which works on offline domains? As I'm writing this I might as well ask about the current state of "incremental backups". It seems like dirty bitmaps can keep track of which blocks changed and just copy those to the backup. Is there some libvirt command-line frontend for that or is it planned for the future? Thanks. - Tim

Hi Team, I am writing a new device in QEMU, which opens and reads from Netlink socket from the hypervisor. I need this Netlink socket to support migration of connection tracking entries during VM Live migration. If I am using QEMU command directly to launch the VM, then any operation on Netlink socket works fine. But, If I am using libvirt to create the VM and attaching the device, then I am getting permission denied error. As I found out that this is related to SElinux, I added the svirt_t context as permissive *"semanage permissive -a svirt_t". *With this, I am not receiving permission denied error, instead i am receiving "operation not permitted" error. I changed the user and group field in libvirtd/qemu.conf to root/root. But still, I am facing the same problem. Any suggestions to overcome this? -- Regards, Bharath

Hi guys, I had to move to the new laptop week ago and I screw migration of my virtual machines. I recovered my virtual machines on the new laptop (virsh define) using the backed up xml files, but I am missing any file with metadata about snapshots. The original storage is cleaned so I cannot take these files anymore. [libvirt-users] KVM NAT stops from working

Hi. First of all thank you for the work you are doing with libvirt. I am not sure this is the right place to ask, I'd appreciate if you can give me any hint or directions. I have several similar KVM Linux boxes and one of them has a really strange behavior with the KVM NAT: It just suddenly stops from working. This is a Linux Ubuntu Server 19.04 with - libvirt-bin 4.0.0 - qemu-kvm 1:2.11 Everything works fine and then suddenly the virtual machines can't reach outside. If I run a tcpdump in the host I see the NAT isn't working. When the server just boots I can see the packets with the server address going out: x.y.z.w.49138 > 8.8.8.8.53 Then, it may be some hours or days later, instead the server address I see the internal domains address: 192.168.122.33.19132 > 8.8.8.8.53 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I try to restart the iptables but it won't help. Any hints ? Thank you very much

Hello Community, I have a problem with two deleted KVMs. So far we have done everything that is necessary: virsh undefine [kvm-name] --managed-save --snapshots-metadata --remove-all-storage --nvram virsh destroy [kvm-name] and we delete the xml-File and the .img. If we now call "virsh list -all", then the machines are also gone. However, after a restart of libvirtd they reappear in the list, like zombies. What did we do wrong? Or is that even a bug? Hello All, Since 4.5.0-23.el7 version (Red Hat 7.7), when I launch pinned VM, libvirtd reset CPU affinity to all enabled in host CPUs, if it runs in custom cpuset. I can't reproduce this behavior with 4.5.0-10.el7_6.12 with the same kernel version (Red Hat 7.7). Libvirt runs in a custom cpuset 'libvirt', where the number of available cpus is restricted to 0,2,4,6,8. And this 'libvirt' cpuset is created in a system with total cpus number: 40 (all cpus are enabled in BIOS) and I have '0-39' range in /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/cpuset.cpus. When a VM with pinned vcpus is launched, VM XML config is in attachement: <vcpu placement='static'>2</vcpu> <vcpupin vcpu='0' cpuset='4'/> <vcpupin vcpu='1' cpuset='6'/> I have the following error: # virsh create /tmp/vm1_2vms-2cores_host1.xml error: Failed to create domain from /tmp/vm1_2vms-2cores_host1.xml error: Unable to write to '/sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/machine.slice/machine-qemu\x2d1\x2dvm12vms\x2d2coreshost1.scope/emulator/cpuset.cpus': Permission denied And in the debug log I can see, that /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/machine.slice was created with a proper cpuset list: 0,2,4,6,8. This list at the beginning was successfully inherited and set in /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/machine.slice/machine-qemu\x2d1\x2dvm12vms\x2d2coreshost1.scope/emulator/cpuset.cpus. [libvirt-users] RLIMIT_MEMLOCK in container environment

Hi all, KubeVirt uses libvirtd to manage qemu VMs represented as Kubernetes API resources. In this case, libvirtd is running inside an unprivileged pod, with some host mounts / capabilities added to the pod, needed by libvirtd and other services. One of the capabilities libvirtd requires for successful startup inside a pod is SYS_RESOURCE. This capability is used to adjust RLIMIT_MEMLOCK ulimit value depending on devices attached to the managed guest, both on startup and during hotplug. AFAIU the need to lock the memory is to avoid pages being pushed out from RAM into swap. In KubeVirt world, several libvirtd assumptions do not apply: 1. In Kubernetes environments, swap is usually disabled. (e.g. kubeadm official deployment tool won't even initialize a cluster until you disable it.) This is documented in lots of places, f.e.: https://docs.platform9.com/kubernetes/disabling-swap-kubernetes-node/ (note: while it's vendor docs, regardless it's well known community recommendation.) 2. hotplug is not supported. Domain definition is stable through its whole lifetime. We are working on a series of patches that would remove the need for SYS_RESOURCE capability from the pod running libvirtd: https://github.com/kubevirt/kubevirt/pull/2584 We achieve it by making another, *privileged* component to set RLIMIT_MEMLOCK for libvirtd process using prlimit() syscall, using the value that is higher than the final value libvirtd uses with setrlimit() [Linux kernel will allow to lower the value without the capability.] Since the formula to calculate the actual MEMLOCK value is embedded in libvirt and is not simple to reproduce outside, we pick the upper limit value set for libvirtd process quite conservatively even if ideally we would use the exact same value as libvirtd would do. The estimation code is here: https://github.com/kubevirt/kubevirt/pull/2584/files#diff-6edccf5f0d11c09e7… While the solution works, there are some drawbacks: 1. the value we use for prlimit() is not exactly equal to the final value used by libvirtd; 2. we are doing all this work in environment that is not prone to issues because of disabled swap space. I believe we would benefit from one of the following features on libvirt side (or both): a) expose the memory lock value calculated by libvirtd through libvirt ABI so that we can use it when calling prlimit() on libvirtd process; b) allow to disable setrlimit() calls via libvirtd config file knob or domain definition. Do you think it would be acceptable to have one of these enhancements in libvirtd, or perhaps both, for degenerate cases like KubeVirt? Thanks for attention, Ihar

Hi, I upgraded to a Fedora 29 host using virt-preview repo to libvirt-daemon-5.6.0-1.fc29.x86_64 The host was using plain Fedora 29 without virt-preview before that. Hi, I am trying to compile Libvirt from the source code on windows using msys2 but keep hitting issues while running `./configure`. …. > checking whether C compiler handles -Wno-suggest-attribute=pure… yes > checking whether C compiler handles -Wno-suggest-attribute=const... yes > checking for how to force completely read-only GOT table… > checking for how to avoid indirect lib deps... -Wl,--no-copy-dt-needed-entries > checking for how to stop undefined symbols at link time… > checking sys/acl.h usability... no > checking sys/acl.h presence… no > checking for sys/acl.h… no > checking for aa_change_profile in -lapparmor… no > checking for pthread_mutexattr_init… no > checking for pthread.h... (cached) no > configure: error: A pthreads impl is required for building libvirt ... Does anyone have any experience compiling Libvirt on a windows machine ? After we add an mtu to the vm bridge here it seems the base bridge gets the same mtu like the vnet adapter.
