Create VM w/ cache=none on tmpfs

Hi, I've seen that in the past, libvirt couldn't start VMs when the disk image was stored on a file system that doesn't support direct I/O having the 'cache=none' configuration [0]. On the KubeVirt project, we have some storage tests on a particular provider which does just that - try to create / start a VM whose disk is on tmpfs and whose definition features 'cache=none'. Is this the expected behavior ? e.g. cache = none can't be used when the disk images are on a tmpfs file system ? I know it was, not sure about now (libvirt-5.6.0-7) ... Question about local migration between containers

Hello On kubevirt project we are using IpV6 Kind cluster, and trying to support migration, but since both of the containers are on the same host we get this error {"component":"virt-launcher","level":"error","msg":"internal error: Attempt to migrate guest to the same host 32323136-3731-4247-3831-303946353338","pos":"virNetClientProgramDispatchError:172","subcomponent":"libvirt","thread":"44", "timestamp":"2020-03-25T10:41:12.123000Z"} Is there a way to work around this please ? it comes of course from https://github.com/libvirt/libvirt/blob/master/src/qemu/qemu_migration_cook… (not sure what version of libvirt i have but it shows the uuid so i guess this is the one) Thanks

protocol method available on Windows

Hi libvirts, I'm playing with libvirt on Windows (downloaded the x64 msi) but I'm stuck at the following: virsh # net-edit default error: failed to connect to the hypervisor error: invalid argument: transport methods unix, ssh and ext are not supported under Windows Can someone shed some light on what transport method I should use? Any help is appriciated. P.S. I'm not subscribed to the list. -- John Doe

hi，every one I have some trouble with the virsh to get vm mem-usage in guest os. [root@localhost ~]# virsh list --all Id Name State 1 wwl_centos7_1708 running 2 windows-virtio-template running I create two vms one guest os is centos, the other is window 7 virsh dommemstat wwl_centos7_1708 actual 4194304 swap_in 0 swap_out 0 major_fault 194 minor_fault 219454 unused 3729588 available 3881812 last_update 1581406529 rss 2969400 so i can get the vm mem-used detail, but if my guest os is windows, though I install virtio-win driver and run blnsrv.exe -i start the service, I fail to get not enough vm mem stat info, as following: virsh dommemstat windows-virtio-template actual 8388608 last_update 1584947706 rss 8263664 can anyone tell me how can I succ to get window's vm with enough mem stat info the same with centos ? thanks u !

Fwd: KVM hook

Hi Team , I am reaching out to you seeking your help for one of my KVM hook script. I am using /etc/libvirt/hooks/network file to trigger an event when a network is created or deleted ( https://www.libvirt.org/hooks.html ). Basically I using a rest call to create the same network in my Infoblox appliance for the network monitoring. However every time I create a network only $2== start or $2==started gets invoked, i have tried pretty much every combination and permutation but did not get any success. I checked the libvirtd.log and found that only $2== start or $2==started gets invoked. In my case i would like to get network created in infoblox appliance as and when it gets created in the KVM and should get deleted as and when it gets deleted from the KVM. As i mentioned when tailed the libvirtd.log I found that the API to create network gets executed when the network is stopped. Hi libvirt crews I am a 4th year Software Engineering student from ChiangMai University, Thailand. Currently, I am doing a research internship at nara institute of science and technology, Japan. I have been working on a research that is related to the performance and security characteristics of various container technologies like Linux containers, gVisor , firecracker, kanta etc. It is supposed to be finished by the middle of next April. I am hoping to get involved with libvirt opensource project before I start my master program in October. I am interested in the Redfish API implementation project suggested by Cédric Bosdonnat. It's a nice modern RESTFUL JSON API which should not be very challenging to work with Python. It seems like There is already a Redfish API client <https://pythonhosted.org/python-redfish/readme.html> written in Python, Do you think it would be a good idea to use it to test the API on server side as i implemented through it ? It would be great If I can get in touch with Cédric Bosdonnat and have further discussion. Any suggestions about the project proposal would be much appreciated. Problems with libvirt for MIPS

Hello. It's my first time here, so I'm so sorry if I make mistakes with how I'm sending or posting this. I wanted to ask about some problems I've found with other people, working with libvirt. We wanted to create a new virtual machine under MIPS architecture, using Qemu and libvirt. We are able to create the machine, and it boots, but never gets an IP. Hello, I'm seeking the solution to live storage migration using blockcopy. Previously, the "virsh undefine" is required before blockcopy. https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvirt-users/2015-October/msg00027.html QEMU has "block-dirty-bitmap-*" operations now, are there steps for the live storage migration using blockcopy without undefine? changing memory size with virsh setmem - results only visible in domain, not on host

Hi, i have a Linux domain (Ubuntu 14.04) where we like to be able to change the amount of usable memory. We have a balloon device and statistics are switched in 5 sec. rhythm. The domain shows very quickly changes (following top) when we change the memory size with setmem, but the host does not show changes in the use of memory for the respective domain. Is that expected behavior ? KVM on CentOS 7 - sluggish performance with Win10 Guest

Hey all, I've been running a Win10 Pro (64bit) guest for some time now.... and originally it was pretty snappy and I had no complaints. Somewhere in about the last 3-6 months I've been noticing sluggish performance -- but not overall. The system is mostly remote so I do a lot of my admin via RDP or the local console with the KVM Manager. I recently did a complete fresh install of Win10 Pro (1909. Previous install was 1607) and both show the same problem. The ONLY real thing running on this VM is Milestone's surveillance system (standalone host). Where I see the "sluggish" is: Connecting to milestone mobile server (either through web browser or client). for the small number of cameras, the connection spool up takes like 15 seconds which is noticeably longer than other systems I have set up with more load/tasks in terms of cameras. This used to be speedy and fine. The other place I see sluggish operation is on the desktop doing some typical tasks and seeing "not responding" in the window of the task that goes away - but should it ever appear to begin with? The system is a Supermicro motherboard with Dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2640 v4 @ 2.40GHz w/64GB The Guest is provided with 20 cores in a config of 1 CPU, 10 cores - 2 threads per core. There are dedicated NICs (dual NIC card) attached to the system via macvtap (and are not used by CentOS in any way except to pass through to this Guest) I'm using QCOW2 for the base OS. The storage volume for video are raw devices. Once a process is running, performance seems fine... it seems to be starting processes or something. I'm not sure -- and I'm not as intimate with KVM/libvirt as I'd like to be yet. So I'm wondering if there's any performance tweaks I should know about. I've read about using .img vs .qcow2 already. I'm using virt-io drivers to some extent.... but is there anything else I'm missing? Thanks in advance, -Ben

upgrading from fedora29 to fedora 31

Hi there I am using libvirt+lxc on fedora I just upgraded a couple boxes from f29 to f31 i am running into rather puzzling glitches on one of the boxes, and am having a hard time trying to figure what exactly is going wrong symptom being that on the faulty box, my 3 containers startup correctly, but all of them stop after some random time shortly after (approx. in the 5-10 minutes) in some cases I even lose one of the containers (its name no longer shows up in `virsh list —all` and I need to reboot the box to reinstate it is there any known issue with libvirt/lxc on fedora 31 ? ***** here’s the little that I’ve been able to figure out so far by myself * I have turned on debugging of libvirtd as per the docs log_filters="3:remote 4:event 3:util.json 3:rpc 1:*" log_outputs="1:file:/var/log/libvirt/libvirtd.log” and am digging in that log file, as well as the system journal, and the containers journals, to try and find some correlation; * I have seen an error message saying this > virNetSocketReadWire:1850 : End of file while reading data: Input/output error and that could be related to the problem; ***** this is really annoying and any hint would be hugely appreciated — thanks in advance

Virtio-disk with driver from Microsoft from 2006 ?

Hi, i wanted to benchmark a windows guest, compare standard driver and virtio driver. I installed the domain first with an IDE disk. I followed https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Paravirtualized_Block_Drivers_for_Windows to install the virtIO driver. In the device manager my VirtIO disk is recognized as a VirtIO SCSI disk from RedHat which seems ok for me. But the driver is, following the device manager, a driver from Microsft from 21/06/2006, version 10.0.18362.1. That's strange in my eyes. This driver is outdated and not from RedHat or Fedora, what i expected. Also updating the driver and pointing to the CD, even the respective folder, didn't work. It says the driver is the most recent. I used the virtIO-ISO 0.1.173, Windows 10 64bit Edition 1903. kvm presenting wrong CPU Topology for cache

Folks, I am having major performance issue with my Erlang application running on openstack KVM hypervisor and after so many test i found something wrong with my KVM guest CPU Topology This is KVM host - http://paste.openstack.org/show/790120/ This is KVM guest - http://paste.openstack.org/show/790121/ If you carefully observe output of both host and guest you can see guest machine threads has own cache that is very strange L2 L#0 (4096KB) + Core L#0 L1d L#0 (32KB) + L1i L#0 (32KB) + PU L#0 (P#0) L1d L#1 (32KB) + L1i L#1 (32KB) + PU L#1 (P#1) I believe because of that my erlang doesn't understand topology and going crazy.. I have Ali Cloud and AWS and when i compare with them they are showing correct CPU Topology the way physical machine showing, something is wrong with my KVM look like. I am running qemu-kvm-2.12 on centos 7.6 and i have tune my KVM at my best level, like CPU vining, NUMA and cpu host-passthrough. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi everyone, I have a question that you may be able to help me with. I had a live block migration of a qemu-kvm guest fail (initiated via nova), in which the guest remained running on the source, but if I try to re-initiate the live migration it returns libvirtError: Timed out during operation: cannot acquire state change lock (held by monitor=remoteDispatchDomainMigratePerform3Params). Looking at blockjob --info I see there is a block copy that has been stuck at 23 % for a few hours now. Is it safe to issue a —abort to the blockjob without impacting the vm and will that resolve the lock? Windows guest stalls during reboot

Hey all, Quick question. I have a (RHEL/CentOS v7) Windows 10 Pro (64bit) guest that shutdown just fine (i.e. KVM shows the host as shut down), but when Windows is set to reboot, KVM Manager shows the guest screen as shut down, but KVM Manager shows the guest as still running and the system never reboots. If I do 'virsh list' -- there's no guest running. If I do 'virch start MyWin10Guest' -- that starts the guest back up and things are like they were before. Am I missing a new setting someplace? I can't seem to type in the right thing in Google to help me figure this one out. Thanks a bunch, -Ben

pci device vga added not showing

Hello All, Trying to get virgl working from linux host to windows guest in virt-manager i have added the host graphics card Matrox G200ew to the hardware settings as a pci device for Windows 10 guest. When i go to spice server settings, and select Opengl checked there are no available pci devices listed in the drop down box select. Am trying to get some 3d working on Windows guest and seems from reading this is almost impossible short of doing gpu passthrough with a second GPU in the host. Am probably missing something. Thank You.

Cannot turn iommu on inside guest

So I want to turn iommu support on in a guest ( <type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-q35-4.1'>hvm</type>). Per [1] I tried to add to devices either <devices> <iommu model='intel'> <driver intremap='on'/> </iommu> </devices> or just a simpler <devices> <iommu model='intel /'> </devices> However, when I try to boot it, it crashes with the following error message (stolen from /var/log/libvirt/qemu/testkvm.log): 2020-02-11T05:13:27.278707Z qemu-system-x86_64: We need to set caching-mode=on for intel-iommu to enable device assignment with IOMMU protection. 2020-02-11 05:13:27.577+0000: shutting down, reason=crashed that sounds like it wants me to do something like qemu-system-x86_64 [...] -device intel-iommu,intremap=on,caching-mode=on[2] using virsh. clustered lvm volume activation

dear all, i have a problem with clustered lvm storage and the "logical" storage driver, perhaps someone has a suggestion. i have a clustered lvm (lvmlockd, not clvm) with 4 hosts running. when i start the storage on a host it activates all volumes in the whole volume group. then i cannot start the storage on other hosts because all volumes are already activated on one host. if i then deactivate all volumes in the started pool i can start the pool on other hosts. but then i have to manually activate the volume if i want to start the domain. it would be great if the logical pool driver would only activate the volume of a domain at domain start and not on pool start. does anybody have a workaround for this or any suggestions for me? do you think i should open an issue on it? Hello, My name is Misha Patel and I’m reaching out on behalf of the HackIllinois Outreach team. HackIllinois is a 36-hour collegiate Open Source hackathon that takes place annually at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This year, it will be from February 28th-March 1st, 2020. Our mission is to introduce college students to Open Source, while giving back to the community. We strive to create a collaborative environment in which our attendees can learn from and work with developers to make their own contributions. In past years, we’ve had developers from prominent projects such as npm, Rust, and Apache come to mentor students from our pool of 900+ attendees. Hi, i'm playing a bit around with vcpus. My guest is Windows 10 1903. Possible to use OVN networking and virtio simultaneously in the same VM?

I wanted to know if it's possible to use OVN networking and virtio simultaneously in the same VM? Or am I wasting my time trying to get it to work? When I try to define a VM and power it on with both types defined, networking fails to work on both. E.g.: <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx'/> <source bridge='foo'/> <virtualport type='openvswitch'> </virtualport> <target dev='devfoo'/> </interface> <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx'/> <source bridge='bar'/> <virtualport type='openvswitch'> </virtualport> <target dev='devbar'/> </interface> <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx/> <source bridge='foo2'/> <model type='virtio'/> <target dev='devfoo2/> </interface> Notice the 'virtio' setting on the third NIC. If I remove that NIC from the xml or if set that NIC as a virtualport on openvswitch like the other two NICs, networking works fine. Am I missing something? Or is this a silly question to even ask?
