Hello guys, I've created a plugin for Hudson (CI) to manage virtmachines using libvirt java (start vm for a build and stop just after). I've just a problem in authentication, in fact I cannot send uname and password using code, libvirt ask me for the credentials on CLI. someone could explain me How I can use authentican or where I can find an usage guide or example? I just recently started using openvz and I'm trying to use libvirt/virsh with it. I followed the directions on page: http://libvirt.org/drvopenvz.html But I get an error trying to run define with the example config file: virsh define virt.conf error: Failed to define domain from virt.conf error: unknown OS type exe I'm using libvirt 0.7.2. Does anyone have more example configuration files or other setup instructions? Does Libvirt allow you to specify other resource limits and controls that openvz has - like vzctl set --devnodes device:rw or vzctl set kmemsize? Thanks, Tom

Hello, On Ubuntu 9.04 (libvirt 0.6.1-0ubuntu5.1) I have 2 different network files: root@sauron:~# ls -l `locate default.xml` lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 2010-02-13 12:34 /etc/libvirt/qemu/networks/autostart/default.xml -> ../default.xml -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 373 2010-03-01 00:02 /etc/libvirt/qemu/networks/default.xml -rw------- 1 root root 319 2010-03-01 00:04 /var/lib/libvirt/network/default.xml Modifications I do on the /etc file are ignored (I'd like to modify the dhcp range and set fixed ips to VM mac addresses). I don't understand why this file is there, as it seems ignored by everything, and why the autostart symlink points to it instead of the /var/lib/libvirt one. Is it reasonable to symlink (or hardlink if possible) one file to the other? Or to remove the /etc file and point the autostart to the /var file? Hi, I'm trying to migrate a VM from one libvirt 0.7.6-1 (qemu-kvm 0.11.1+dfsg-1) to another libvirt 0.7.6-2 (qemu-kvm 0.11.1+dfsg-1) connected with SSH , i have followed pre requite (same shared, same path, same network conf ...) . Hello: When I try to start a VPS, it tells me the IP address is already in use by another system. How do I find out what guest is using an IP address? Folks, Does anyone know whether libvirt provides a means for me to guarantee a persistent link for my guest's virtual serial console? I need to have a consistent mapping (for example, a symlink that always points to the correct /dev/pts entry) so I can automate kgdb hookup on boot. Jon.

[libvirt-users] live migration not working correctly

I have two servers running Ubuntu 9.10, with shared disk from ISCSI SAN and OCFS2, identical network configurations, shared ssh keys, and pki keys. My vm will boot from either machine and run correctly. When I attempt to do a live migration with "migrate --live base32 qemu +[ssh/tcp]://vm1/system" it initiates the vm on the other server, but leaves the vm on the current server in the "running" state and the vm on the other server in the "paused" state. It never finishes the migration. I get the same results for doing a migration via ssh as I do with tcp/pki. I have turned up the logging to debug, but don't see anything in the log to indicate an error or any reason for it to not complete. At least not anything obvious. The Ubuntu server software is using kvm/qemu version 84. I have been through the ubuntu and qemu forums/wiki/documentation. Anyone have any suggestions of other things to look for? -- Daniel R. Hello, my name is Paul. I need to map a PCI device for a virtual machine. The Linux distribution is Ubuntu server 9.10, infrastructure virtualization is "KVM". The virtual machine will install trixbox. To map the PCI card is a "Digium TDM410p. There currently, KVM hosts a virtual machine that runs smoothly without any problems. In fact, this virtual machine is running Openfiler and has direct access to 2 physical disks installed on the server. Creating a new virtual machine can not connect the Digium card, directly to the virtual machine.I tried in 2 ways. 1. Directly editing the XML file for the virtual machine with the parameters indicated in the documentation: ... <devices> <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci'> <source> <address bus='0x01' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/> <----- this is my personal configuration </ source> </ hostdev> </ devices> ... 2. Adding the PCI card via virt-manager In both cases, the virtual machine will not start. hello i have been having trouble installing libvirt i installed kvm-kmod on rhel 5.4 kernel 2.6.18 without issues using an rpm from the redhat website after installation i tested it by creating an img file with qemu image and went ahead to install libvirt and libvirt-python for virtmanager however during installation of libvirt i get the following error: failed dependencies /usr/bin/qemu-img since qemu-img is in /usr/local/kvm/bin on my system i tried adding it to $PATH, symlinking the file and even copying the binery to /usr/bin but to no use compilation from source seemed to go fine but after that libvirt-python could still not find libvirt is there any solution to this issue? , i would imagine it is a known one thanks in advance matan

Hi there, for development i use a windows vm. which is installed into a disk image. because the compiler generates a lot of temporary files into the user tempdir (C:\\Documents And Users\\User\\Local Settings\\Temp) the vm becomes quite slow after a couple of weeks and i register a lot activity on the disk. so i moved the temp directory to a ram disk and no more problems. but because the ram disk is not formated on startup i need to do this by hand. so i disabled autostart for the vm and do the following: $ sudo mkfs.ntfs -q -L TEMP -I /dev/ram0 $ sudo virsh start windows so the question is, does libvirt provide some kind of pre startup script which is will be executed before the libvirtd does the autostart for the vm. -- Best Regards Soeren

Greetings: I have an issue with connecting to the esx hypervisor from my guest Vm. The purpose of the connection is to obtain host related information (like network, devices etc). I am not sure what is it that rejects the connect at the server side, and what i am missing. I am running lib0.7.5, i have libvirtd running on guest-vm. The host ESX has the ip address a.b.c.d. I'm trying to attach a USB device which is attached to my host to a guest instance. The device definition in the XML looks like: <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='usb' managed='yes'> <source> <vendor id='0x046d'/> <product id='0xc111'/> </source> </hostdev> and the device appears in lsusb as USB device 002:018: Bus 002 Device 018: ID 046d:c111 Logitech, Inc. but when I try and start the guest libvirt appears to try and use a different device which doesn't exist: error: unable to set security context '107:107' on '/dev/bus/usb/002/022': No such file or directory This is using the current libvirt-0.7.6-1.fc12.x86_64 package from the F12 virt-preview repository. Hi, I am having problems creating VMs in virt-manager. I have played with different xen hypervisor versions 3.0 & 3.4 (with rpm -i --force) but have in principle gone back to the originals. - Though I cannot absolutely exclude that something has gone wrong. In principle I am using rhel 5.4 with the gitco xen 3.4 hypervisor. Can anybody put me on the right track with the attached error message? Note, the storage file I am attempting to use does exist. [libvirt-users] poor network performance to one of two guests

G'day, I have a host running two kvm guests. One of them gets very poor network performance, testing with iperf I get ~10MBit/sec to guest A, >400MBit/sec to guest B (running iperf between the host/guest). Both guests are using the same bridge: Guest A: <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='54:52:00:75:24:91'/> <source bridge='br0'/> </interface> Guest B: <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='54:52:00:3b:13:2a'/> <source bridge='br0'/> </interface> The host and guests are debian lenny, the host I have updated with some packages from backports.org. The host is running 2.6.30 with qemu-kvm 0.12.2 and libvirt 0.7.5. The host has 8gig ram and a quad core xeon cpu. Each guest is given one vcpu, guest A has 3gig memory, guest B 1gig. I have tried starting them in a different order so that one gets vnet0 and one gets vnet1, it doesn't make a difference, it's always guest A that is slow. I'm a bit stuck here, I don't know what else to try. [libvirt-users] How to debug Ubuntu 8.04 LTS guest crash during install?

Hello: I am using kvm on a CentOS 5.4 server. I am trying to install the TunkeyLinux Core appliance found here: http://www.turnkeylinux.org/core I downloaded the ISO file from the web site. Then, I used this command to intall it: virt-install -n tkl-core -r 512 --vcpus=1 --check-cpu --os-type=linux --os-variant=ubuntuhardy -v --accelerate -c /tmp/turnkey-core-2009.10-hardy-x86.iso -f /var/lib/libvirt/images/tkl-core.img -s 15 -b br0 --vnc noautoconsole When I connect to the VNC console, I get the Turnkey linux options screen. I select Install to hard disk from there and it seems to start the install but crashes during the installer startup. This is repeatable so there has to be a way to debug it. I tried turning on the debug option for virt-install but that did not give me any useful info. Any ideas how to debug this? [libvirt-users] Stealing ownership: chown user->qemu->root

F12, libvirt 0.7.1-15, qemu 0.11.0-12, 32 bit I recently discovered that libvirt is stealing ownership of my disk images. How can I make it stop? I have a disk image in my home directory, owned by matt. When I create a domain that uses the disk it gets chowned to qemu.qemu. When the domain terminates it is owned by root.root. I've lost access to the file. It has been suggested that the user->qemu happens to make sure that the qemu account can read/write the file. chmod'ing would be far better and avoid this problem. It appears that libvirt just assumes the disk image was owned by root before being chown'd to qemu. Another problem with this is qcow disks. If chown'ing to qemu is to ensure that qemu has access to all the disks needed for the domain, it fails for qcow, because the base disk is not chown'd as well. This can result in a very cryptic error message (funny period (.)): monitor socket did not show up.: No such file or directory For instance, base.img is owned by matt (u=rw,go=), a qcow disk qcow.img is linked to base.img. When a domain using qcow.img is created qcow.img is owned to qemu, but base.img is not. Instead of chown'ing, will libvirt provide an error that could cover both these situations? The virt-manager GUI (or virsh TUI) could interpret that error and chmod the proper files transparently, or preemptively chmod the required files. Users of the libvirt API would have to make sure things are setup properly at first and would not have to worry about side-effect changes made by libvirtd. I think the suggestion holds even if is only the qemu driver doing the chown. Best, matt

How can I map from a domain to the IP(s) given to its network interfaces? I'm not specifying a <mac .../> to the domain, so I don't have an upfront mapping setup. Is the best way to do some upfront mapping, e.g. install static MAC -> IP in the DHCP server and add <mac .../> to my domains? Best, matt

Hello, I woudl liek to start qemu-kvm with -monitor myfile.pipe options instead of default -monitor pty Anyway I have not found any way to tell libvirt (using virsh) that I want to set a specific -monitor option to the qemu-kvm command line. How can I do this ? I do not want to start manually qemu-kvm because in this way I will loose the libvirt VM management thanks Rick
