[libvirt-users] Need help using libvirt with qcow2 delta and base images

Hi, I am having trouble configuring a virtual machine domain and its corresponding xml definition to use a qcow2 delta disk. The delta disk is backed by a qcow2 base disk. I am able to successfully start the guest OS with the delta disk at the command line using qemu. However, I am not able to start the guest OS using the libvirt tools including virsh and virt-manager. I am hoping that someone knows how to configure a virtual machine domain that works with a qcow2 delta disk, and have it managed by the virt-family tools. First, I create a delta and base disk from a raw image file with the following commands: qemu-img convert ubuntu910server64.img -O qcow2 ubuntu910server64_base.qcow2 qemu-img create -b ubuntu910server64_base.qcow2 -f qcow2 ubuntu910server64_delta.qcow2 Then, I can successfully start the guest OS on the command line with qemu-system-x86_64 -m 256 -hda ubuntu910server64_delta.qcow2 My attempt to modify the virtual machine domain configuration fails. Here are my steps: -- Edit the configuration # virsh edit ubuntu910server64 -- Replace some lines <disk type='file' device='disk'> - <source file='/var/lib/libvirt/images/ubuntu910server64.img'/> - <target dev='vda' bus='virtio'/> + <source file='/var/lib/libvirt/images/ubuntu910server64_delta.qcow2'/> + <target dev='hda' bus='ide'/> </disk> -- Attempt to start the machine # virsh start ubuntu910server64 Connecting to uri: qemu:///system error: Failed to start domain ubuntu910server64 error: internal error unable to start guest: qemu: could not open disk image /var/lib/libvirt/images/ubuntu910server64_delta.qcow2 If I have posted this to the wrong forum, please direct me to the right location. [libvirt-users] Restarting network on host completely cuts off guests. Why? How to prevent?

Hi list, this probably isn't a completely libvirt-specific question but I'll try anyway. Please ignore if it is too much off-topic. On an Ubuntu (9.10) virtualisation host, running KVM and libvirt and several guests (Debian, Ubuntu, Windows Server 2003) in a bridged network fashion [1,2] I noticed that performing /etc/init.d/networking restart on the host completely cuts off all guests from the network. I have to manually shutdown and restart (virsh shutdown GUEST && virsh start GUEST, a mere reboot doesn't suffice) them to get them onto the network again. Obviously that's not ideal. Is this the expected behaviour? Can I somehow re-establish guest network connectivity without shutting down the guest first? Is my setup somehow wrong or do I expect too much? Any insight, explanation or pointers would be much appreciated! [libvirt-users] STP default behavior for bridged (off) and NAT (on) networking in libvirt

Hello, when talking about networking in hypervisors, it's easy to distinguish the two classic configurations, NAT and bridged, and the official libvirt wiki does exactly in this way here [1]. NAT networking is already configured by libvirt creating a bridge called libvirt0, while bridged networking have to be configured manually by the user. The libvirt0 bridge for NAT networking is default configured in this way: STP=on MAXWAIT=0 While suggested br0 bridge for bridged networking is configured in this way: STP=off MAXWAIT=5 Please, can you explain me why STP is on for NAT and should be off for bridged networking? It seems much easier to me to create loops when using bridged networking than NAT. Moreover, reading this old debian bug about complaints of MAXWAIT != 0 when STP off, I'm wondering if the suggested configurations aren't actually switched. Hi list, long(ish) time libvirt users, first time poster. Question: Is the default network (192.168.122.0/24, NAT) created by libvirt needed at all when guests are connected to the host's bridge device (and not the default network) I.e. when I have <interface type='bridge'> <source bridge='br0'/> <model type='virtio'/> </interface> in my guest definition is the default network ever even used? Or can I safely remove it? This may be a naive or stupid question but I have not found a definitive answer studying the documentation. Can anybody enlighten me? Hi, I will try to explain my case, I hope this is rigth place to do it. My goal is migrate an Ubuntu 9.10 64bit VMWare VM from a Win2k8 64bit server to an Ubuntu 9.10 64bit server. Following some tutorials I've got a .qcow2 file from .vmdk and a .xml file from .vmx file Running virsh define/start all was fine, but VM is unaccessible: no ping, no ssh, also from hosting server. Hello, I am planning to develop a management application for managing Redhat Xen and Redhat KVM hypervisors. I am evaluating the Java bindings versus the C++ version of libvirt. As part of evaluation, I could not find meaningful answers to the questions below. Hence, I thought that people on this mailing list would be the most appropriate to comment on them. Can you please let me know your views? 1. Are all functions that are available in C API available in Java? 2. Are Java bindings added along with every enhancement to C API? 3. If answer to above question is negative, typically how long does it takes for the addition of Java bindings for the enhancement? 4. Most of libvirt based third party management applications use which of Java bindings or C API? 5. What are your good/bad experiences while using either of C API or Java bindings? 6. What is your concluding personal recommendation? Hello: I installed virt-top from epel onto my CentOS 5.4 host running KVM. When I run virt-top, it shows me the CPU and memory usage of the VMs, but the disk and network colums are empty. I found this page: http://people.redhat.com/~rjones/virt-top/faq.html That states it depends on what is supported by libvirt and the hypervisor. Is this implemented in KVM? Hello, I am searching for the libvirt operations for relocating LXC (system or application) containers. LXC relocation mechanism is done by checkpoint / restart. I went over libvirt API documentation and found the following methods: virDomainSave that receives a domain and path to state file. The method saves domain's memory contents into a disk file. virDomainRestore that receives a domain and path to state file. The method restores the domain from the state file created by save operation. Are these the proper methods to use for LXC relocation? I assume I can also use the corresponding operations via virsh (save / restore).. >From looking into lxcDriver object (defined under /src/lxc/xlc_driver.c in libvirt server source) I can see that NULLs are set in save and restore methods. Does that mean that there is no support for saving and restoring Linux containers? Is there a libvirt patch beyond the kernel patch that needs to be applied? Hi Matthias, Sorry for the late reply. I was on travel with limited network access last week. That sounds great, if you need any help or someone to test stuff, please let me know since I am highly interested in helping in any way I can. First question, when I am testing can I use VMWare Workstation on my laptop as a replacement for a full fledged for just testing API and libVirt access? If so I can set that up on my F12 box and start running some tests with libvirt and cobbler. Any new updates on the storage and network efforts? What are the basic requirements that you are going to try to initially hit. I assume there is alway more you could do but what's your 1.0 'good to go' set? Hi there, I'm currently using libvirt 0.4.6 from the Debian sources with 6 VMs running and since I'm getting random crashes of one of the VMs without any logfile entry in either host or guest (libvirt debugging not turned on as I found out about it just today) I want to upgrade to the latest version (0.7.7 - I guess) from Debian backports. Is this huge upgrade safely possible with just switching sources to backports? Or can I expect problems? Rebooting the VMs is obligatory at the end of the upgrade? i try to connect to my local libvirt to use openvz openvz://localhost but i get an error about a missed certificate and when i use openvz:///localhost only a eror message says could not connect libvirt error

[libvirt-users] Creating a private network

I am trying to create a separate private network between the host (domain 0) and the guests. Using virsh, I created a bridge network, virbr1. I can successfully add guest interfaces to the bridge network and communicate between the guests. However, I am unable to communicate between the host and any of the guests. I created eth0:1 on the host and configured virbr1 to forward to eth0:1 (mode="route" dev="eth0:1"), but there is still no communication. I don't think creating eth0:1 is the right thing to do. I think I need to create a virtual interface on domain 0 that is part of the bridge network, virbr1. However, when I run virsh attach-interface with domain-0, it fails. What am I missing?? Are there any recommendations as to how often a new connection should be made versus reused? Right now we create a new connection *every time* we hit libvirt for something. We can easily change this so that a single connection is made for a series of libvirt calls, or even so that a single connection is used for the lifetime of the running application. What are the issues to consider when making these choices? We are connecting to qemu:///system. Thank you. .:. brainsik
