Hello, I'm facing some strange behavior, and I hope you can provide a clarification. Consider the following code: virDomainPtr dom = virDomainLookupByName(virt, domain_name); if (dom) { printf("domain already defined...\n"); if (virDomainUndefine(dom)) printf("...unable to undefine!!!\n"); else { printf("...undefined."); free(dom); } } dom = virDomainDefineXML(virt, SOME_XML); if (dom != NULL) { const char *name = virDomainGetName(dom); printf("NAME IS NOW: %s\n", name); } else printf("dom is NULL!\n"); When executed the first time, the code correctly defines the domain, and prints: defining domain test2-vm libvir: QEMU error : Domain not found: no domain with matching name 'test2-vm' NAME IS NOW: test2-vm If executed a second time with the same SOME_XML when the domain is already defined, it prints: defining domain test2-vm domain already defined... libvir: Domain error : invalid domain pointer in virDomainGetName undefining......undefined.NAME IS NOW: (null) Not only the name is null, but the domain can't be started. What is the correct way to undefined programmatically a domain that is already defined? Why is the second virDomainDefineXML() returining a pointer (as opposed to null), but the pointed object seem to be invalid? Thanks, Roberto

Hi I am developing tool to collect information on XenServer which is on Opensuse 11. I am using libvirt-0.4.6.jar and and jna-3.2.4 jar files. I tried to connect from Remote system(Windows) to server, but could not get the connection object. Hi, Is it possible to copy the UUID defined in the XML domain file into the image file? For example, the UUID defined in ubuntu.xml can appear, say, under /proc/ directory of the ubuntu virtual machine? Thanks. Kamil.

Hi, I am currently using IPv4 with the following network configuration which has worked fine for some months now: <network> <name>net0</name> <uuid>fa0c1c69-da82-1bef-fcb2-4c336bbexxxx</uuid> <forward dev='eth0' mode='route'/> <bridge name='virbr0' stp='on' forwardDelay='0' /> <ip address='78.47.xx.xx' netmask='255.255.255.xxx'> </ip> </network> The company hosting my server is now providing /64-IPv6-subnets to its customers - thus I'd like to take advantage of this and supply my guests with IPv6-subnets. Is it possible to do this without changing much of my setup (i.e. just changing some configuration files?)? I am using libvirt 0.6.3. Thanks, Martin

[libvirt-users] Clock Sources under RHEL/Centos 5.x with KVM and libvirt

I'm wondering under what circumstances the kvm-clock source is exposed to a guest. I've got a bunch of KVM servers running Centos 5.5 and some of the guests have are defaulting to jiffies or apic whilst some are picking up kvm-clock. These guests are a mix of 32bit and 64bit Centos 5.5. Looking at the virtual machine definition file there doesn't appear to be a difference between the guests with kvm-clock and those without. Hi all! I set in XML <graphics type='vnc' port='5901'/> But Libvirt assign first free port from 5900 and take 5900. Anb block access to host console vnc (tightvnc-server-module). Console access need not frequently. I do # service libvirt-guests stop;killall Xorg; service libvirt-guests start But it dirty hack Im use Fedora 13 # env LANG=en_US virsh version Compiled against library: libvir 0.8.2 Using library: libvir 0.8.2 Using API: QEMU 0.8.2 Running hypervisor: QEMU 0.12.5 I prefer possiblity to define for libvirt different base port for |autoport|. 5910 for example. Somebody know solution?

[libvirt-users] Question on CPU pinning in Python

Looking at the python API, once I have a domain object I can call domain.pinVcpu to pin a specific vcpu to a physical CPU. I found http://www.mail-archive.com/libvir-list@redhat.com/msg04562.html which mentioned some changes to the C API in the Python implementation, and was wondering if my understanding is correct. Say that I have a host system with 16 logical CPU's, 0-15. If I wanted to pin vcpu1 of a domain to CPUs 2 and 4, I would pass: domain.pinVcpu(1, (False, False, True, False, True, False....[and so on til I have 16 things])) In other words, pinVcpu accepts as arguments the vCPU that I wish to act on, and a 16 (or however many CPU's are present on the host) item tuple of True/False values, in the same order as the CPU's I wish to mask (for example, item 0 of the tuple represents CPU0), True meaning that the vCPU thread is allowed to run there, and False meaning that it is not. Just looking to confirm that my understanding of this call is correct. Thanks! -Jon

Hi Everyone, I am planning to extend libvirt to support sheepdog for qemu/kvm and found that storage code is placed in src/storage. Storing files in sheepdog is independent of file system and we just need to specify vm-name on qemu command ine. Here are the following comands used for creating and running a VM using qemu qemu-img create sheepdog:MyImage001 25G qemu-system-x86_64 sheepdog:MyImage001 I would appreciate if any one provide pointers on incorporating sheepdog functionality to libvirt. Hi, you are right - the problem is specific to only that one vmx file - for other virtual machines dumpxml is working, as i found out. i am using esxi 4.1.0 and virsh 0.8.4. the machine was created using vsphere client, and was cloned and renamed afterwards - maybe that was the problem ... regards, frank > > Hm, that's strange. Hello, I am trying to run ./configure --with-one --with-esx but I get the following error: checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0... yes checking for XMLRPC... no configure: error: You must install XMLRPC-C >= 1.14.0 to compile libvirt ONE driver However I have downloaded xmlrpc-c-client and built from sources version 1.16.31 root@sa251:~/libvirt-0.8.4# xmlrpc-c-config --version 1.16.31 root@sa251:~/libvirt-0.8.4# xmlrpc-c-config --features c++ abyss-server curl-client What am I missing here? Error: Sep 18 13:53:46 gdrenterprise libvirtd: 13:53:46.116: error : virInterfaceDefParseMtu:141 : XML description for interface mtu value is improper is not well formed or invalid To correct this error you will have to remove or correct the entry of virtual IP's added to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ by the virtual application. Theory! I suspect that if you add the network interface with application that have non root privileges or you have configured /etc/access.conf. [libvirt-users] Is it possible to live migrate guest OS'es between different versions of kvm/qemu-kvm with libvirt?

Hi, I currently have a couple of Debian KVM servers with all a different version of kvm or qemu-kvm. I can live migrate a guest OS from one server to the other just fine, as long as the version of qemu-kvm is the same. However, when I try to migrate a guest to a server running a newer (or older) version of qemu-kvm, I run into problems. I think this is because the xml configuration differs slightly between version. For example, if I try to migrate from a server running qemu-kvm 0.11.0 to one running qemu-kvm 0.12.4, I get the following error: virt01:~# virsh migrate --live testserver qemu+ssh://192.168.1.7/system error: internal error unable to reserve PCI address 0:0:3 When migrating from kvm 85 to qemu-kvm 0.11.0: virt02:~# virsh migrate --live testserver qemu+ssh://192.168.1.2/system error: Unknown failure Migrating one from 0.12.4 to 0.11.0 just completely breaks libvirt, forcing me to kill -9 libvirtd and the kvm instance, etc. I believe this is caused in part because different versions of qemu-kvm need different xml configurations. To run my testserver on 0.12.4 for example, I need to delete the lines with the PCI id's, just to be able to start it. So, is there a way to make this work? Perhaps tell libvirt to not send the config file when doing a live migrate, and use the xml in /etc/libvirt/qemu instead somehow? Thanks in advance, Nils

Hi, Libvirt provides classes such as Xen_ComputerSystem, Xen_Processor etc., in order to build applications using libvirt-api which can interact with the Xen Hypervisor. I would like to know what are the corresponding classes for the KVM hypervisor, so that I can use libvirt-cim to communicate with the hypervisor. Would it be Kvm_ComputerSystem or Qemu_Computersystem? Any help in this regard would be of great help. Thanking you. Regards Ananth

Hi, I'm trying to set up a virtual machine server for our newly re-founded LUG at my school. The idea is for members to have their own virtual machine that they can learn their way around a Linux system without worry of them hosing the host system or their own computers. At home I use libvirt with my server to manage multiple virtual machines, but the issue I'm running into for this use case is user permissions. As far as I've seen, anyone who has access to the server over ssh and has access to the libvirt server via virt-manager has access to all of the virtual machines. I'd like to find some way for each user to only see their own virtual machine. Is this possible? I've considered setting up VMs myself, and giving them direct access via ssh or VNC, but I'd like them to have access to the console so that they can attach things like CD images to their VMs for reinstalling or changing distros. Is there a way to get libvirt to do what I need here? Thanks much, Zach Tibbitts

Hi, Is virsh able to access the VMX config of a virtual machine running on a esxi host? I would like to take backups of my virtual machine configs and the doku section "Converting from VMware VMX config to domain XML config" (http://libvirt.org/drvesx.html) comes close to this - but does not tell how to get access to the vmx file. Hi, I am using virConnectOpen(const char *uri) to connect to the local hypervisor. When uri is set to "lxc:///", an error gets logged in /var/log/messages about failed connection. But I do not see any error for "xen:///". The machine does not have these drivers installed, and I am using libvirt 0.6.3. My questions are - 1. Why I see error in /var/log/messages for container and not for xen? 2. Is there a way to avoid this error? Can I check for installed drivers before trying to connect? Thanks Sharad Mishra
