[libvirt-users] Problems setting up a VM ....
by William A. Mahaffey III 12 Aug '11

12 Aug '11

.... New to this list & definitely new to virtualization :-/ .... I am trying to setup a 64-bit CentOS 5.6 VM on a 64-bit FC14 server host, all patched up as of a couple of weeks ago. uname -a on the host shows: [wam@Q6600, CFD, 9:24:23am] 540 % uname -a Linux Q6600 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Feb 7 07:06:44 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux [wam@Q6600, CFD, 9:52:43am] 541 % I access the server by ssh on my LAN. I was working on this last Sunday & got stuck, see below. I posted this question to a couple of other lists & had no takers, so here I am here. The server runs in runlevel 3 & has no gfx card onboard, so I am working from the command line. I had a couple of abortive attempts at setup, which got as far as initializing my disk storage for the VM, then the following: [root@Q6600:/etc, Sun Aug 07, 05:08 PM] 1339 # virt-install -n CentOS-5.6-64bitVM -r 2048 --arch=x86_64 --cpu core2duo,disable=vmx --vcpus=1,maxvcpus=1,sockets=1,cores=2,threads=1 --os-type=linux --os-variant=rhel5 --disk path=/home/VMs/CentOS.5.6-64bit-VM/disk.img,size=50 --cdrom /home/ISOs/CentOS-5.6/64bit/CentOS-5.6-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso --autostart --prompt This will overwrite the existing path '/home/VMs/CentOS.5.6-64bit-VM/disk.img' Do you really want to use this disk (yes or no) yes Starting install... (I couldn't click-&-drag to capture text from the VM window, going from memory). I let it sit for about 5 min. to be sure it was really hung, then clicked the VM window out, whereupon the message about 'installation still in progress' & the rest appeared. I poked around in virsh a bit as you can see, but couldn't figure anything out. I tried (re)connecting to the console of the VM & that hung, I had to kill the virsh command from another window. I attach syslog output from the proceedings. I am *sure* this is pilot error, but I am stuck for now. Any assistance appreciated :-) .... -- William A. [libvirt-users] virStoragePoolRefresh() returns before or after all new vols on path discovered?
by Gareth S Bestor 12 Aug '11

12 Aug '11

Basically, does virStoragePoolRefresh() api 'block' until the pool has refreshed itself (eg added any/all new volumes found in the pool path) or can it return early before the refresh is fully 'done' ? - G Dr. Gareth S. [libvirt-users] virInitialize dumps core intermittently.
by Sharad Mishra 12 Aug '11

12 Aug '11

Hi, I have a host with 6 VMs set to autostart. When this host reboots, it starts libvirtd, pegasus cimom and libvirt-cim. It also restarts the VMs. Intermittently we noticed a core during start up that points to the last call made by libvirt-cim to "virInitialize". I am thinking that it is a timing issue where virInitialize is called while libvirt is trying to autostart the VMs. Is this a known issue? Thanks, Sharad Mishra

[libvirt-users] iscsi w/ libvirt
by Stefan G. Weichinger 11 Aug '11

11 Aug '11

"Playing" with a NAS capable of iscsi ... trying to make use of it within the virtual machine manager. Could someone point me at or provide me an example/screenshot of adding iscsi to my KVM-host? I think I still don't get it. Should I add an iscsi-LUN as a storage-pool? Or as single disk to a VM? Could someone pls point me at some docs to make me understand? Thanks a lot, Stefan

[libvirt-users] the naming convention libvirt names a block based storage volume

Seems like different libvirt versions generate a storage volume name in different format. We would like to learn how libvirt names a storage volume under a block based storage pool. [libvirt-users] virt-manager - how to add /dev/mapper as a storage pool
by Marc Haber 09 Aug '11

09 Aug '11

Hi, I would like to be able to configure VMs running off dm-crypt devices that were unlocked in the host. Unlocked dm-crypt devices show up in /dev/mapper/devicename, with devicename being the second parameter given to cryptsetup luksOpen. The LVM storage pool type insists on searching in /dev/vgname and cannot be tricked into reading /dev/mapper by giving it a fake VG named mapper; the LVM storage pool type "dir" mishandles /dev/mapper/control ("illegal seek"). Is there a workaround to be able to use such devices in virt-manager without having to define a single storage pool for every device used? [libvirt-users] Create volume wit libvirt API for Python

Please help! [libvirt-users] Reg: Packaging format for LIBIVRT
by Alphonse Hansel Anthony 04 Aug '11

04 Aug '11

Hi, I am looking for an available Open Source Packaging model for Libvirt, similar to OVF/OVA supported by Vmware. The OVA model uses the manifest to define the resource requirements for the virtual appliance and the XML schema follows OVF. Are there similar specification to include libvirt XML in a package along with disk images/ISO... etc? Any pointers in this regard would be useful. Thanks, Alphonse

[libvirt-users] Using libvirt with a preexisting network infrastructure
by Vegard Vesterheim 04 Aug '11

04 Aug '11

I have a server running Ubuntu natty (libvirt 0.8.8) with separate ethernet interfaces. I have created an unnumbered bridge for each interface, these are connected to an already established network infrastructure, with preexisting DHCP and DNS services. I would like to handle *establishment* of these bridges outside libvirt (via /etc/network/interfaces), but still have them defined as networks within libvirt. So, libvirt shall not *configure* the bridges, just be aware of their existence and connect each VM to its configured bridge. This way I can use virt-manager/libvirt to connect my virtual hosts to the correct network. The libvirt commands net-start, net-destroy would become no-ops. It seems that libvirt is geared towards handling all network configuration itself, but I do not need help from libvirt for establishing the bridges, DHCP and DNS. I know that I can edit the <interface> element in the VM XML-files after creation, to assign a virtual host to a bridge, like this: <interface type='bridge'> <source bridge='br22'/> .... </interface> This works, but I would like to do this with libvirt mechanisms. Is this possible? - Vegard V -

[libvirt-users] Custom storage pools/volumes
by Mohammed Naser 04 Aug '11

04 Aug '11

Hello everyone, We're currently working with using libvirt as an abstract API to make our dealings with other hypervisors far easier and faster, however, we have our own storage API that connects/disconnects and makes LUNs available over iSCSI with iSER. We would have loved to use a storage pool however our system implements a one target per LUN/VDI, therefore, we'd have to create a pool for each server. We really would like to utilize the virStorageVolDownload / virStorageVolUpload API calls, however, it seems that those would only work if the storage volume is within a pool. Is there a way we could possibly define a storage volume without a pool or will we have to create a storage pool for each individual volume? Thank you, Mohammed Naser http://vexxhost.com

Additionally, I added: virsh save-file-dumpxml dom.save > file.xml virsh save-file-define dom.save file.xml virsh save-file-edit dom.save to do things inline, and to make it so you don't have to remember to 'virsh dumpxml dom' prior to 'virsh save'. > > I found that the latest libvirt (libvirt 0.9.4) is out. That's amazing, considering it hasn't been released yet :) Maybe you are referring to 0.9.4-rc2 instead? But at any rate, the official 0.9.4 will probably be released tomorrow with even more bug fixes above 0.9.4-rc2. > I tried installing in my Centos 5.6 machine. Looks like you're missing some backslashes toward the bottom, so virt-install wouldn't see anything past "os-variant". Here's mine (adding the ttyS0 allows looking at it on the cli with "virsh console" as well): virt-install \ --name=myhost \ --connect qemu:///system \ --disk path=/data/virt/guest$$,size=20,bus=virtio \ --vcpus=2 --ram=1024 \ --graphics vnc,keymap=en-us \ --autostart \ --location=http://example.org/ks/el6/x86_64/ \ -x "console=ttyS0,115200 ks=http://example.org/ks/myhost.cfg" \ --network bridge=br0 \ --os-type=linux \ --os-variant=virtio26

[libvirt-users] Guests ignoring config changes
by Michael Jinks 01 Aug '11

01 Aug '11

I have a libvirt/kvm setup on a Gentoo system which I've been using happily for a couple of years. Recently, after a round of updates, I started encountering all sorts of strange behavior, which I'll mostly skip for now... My current issue is that guest domains appear to be ignoring changes made with 'virsh edit <domain>'. Two examples: My primary desktop VM is crashing on boot, so I'm trying to boot it with an install/rescue CD. In my client definition file I have: <os> <type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-0.13'>hvm</type> <boot dev='cdrom'/> <boot dev='hd'/> </os> ...and the cdrom defined elsewhere in the file points to a real ISO file, which I know is bootable. But when I start the guest, it ignores the CD and boots from the (buggy) system image on the hd device. This still happens if I remove the "<boot dev='hd'/>" line altogether. Second example: I created another VM, definition copied from the one above, so that I wouldn't be playing around with anything important. On first boot it complains: error: internal error process exited while connecting to monitor: char device redirected to /dev/pts/3 inet_listen_opts: bind(ipv4,127.0.0.1,5911): Address already in use inet_listen_opts: FAILED ...Oops, forgot to fix my VNC port. So I edited the VM using "virsh edit", found the VNC line, changed "port=5911" to "port=5912". Saved, verified that my change appears in the XML file on disk, tried again to start the guest, and got the same complaint about port 5911 being in use. "virsh dumpxml" shows the corrrected port number, but for some reason the change isn't making it through to the guest. I've tried restarting libvirtd, with no effect, so I'm guessing there must be some cache of VM configuration data that isn't being updated when I edit my guest definitions? What am I doing wrong? Thanks, --Michael

[libvirt-users] Q on stupid video tricks
by Whit Blauvelt 01 Aug '11

01 Aug '11

Hi, The good news is that if you use Virt-Manager running in a VM viewed through Virt-Manager, that VM can drill another level through to view VMs. The badish news is if that's a GUI desktop, the video for the VM-in-VM view ends up (at least for me) with some serious artifacts - particularly distortions largely involving vertical lines down through it. Okay, this is an odd case that hardly counts as a problem, since who would be crazy enough to do it? Still, since that's me, I'm wondering if there's any setting to tweak that would bring that video into better focus? Thanks, Whit

[libvirt-users] Migration hangs on Gentoo with KVM
by Jonathan Stoppani 01 Aug '11

Hi there, I'm trying to migrate a domain between two Gentoo hosts using KVM as hypervisor, but the migration hangs. I tried both live or offline migration modes without success. Details below. Anyone has an idea of what could be wrong with my setup? The migration is the only thing not working. [libvirt-users] Is there a good way to "slot" libvirtd versions?
by Whit Blauvelt 01 Aug '11

01 Aug '11

Hi, Is there a reasonable way to alternately use several versions of libvirtd on the same system? I ask because there are features of 0.9.X I want to experiment with, yet also need to use the systems where I'm doing that to connect via virt-manager and virsh to non-experimental systems running 0.8.8 and 0.8.3 on Ubuntu - which the compiled-from-tar 0.9.x has an incompatibility with. As far as I can see with library dependencies there's no simple way to run different editions of the libvirtd stack alternately on the same system. But I could easily be missing a trick. Anyone have this working? Thanks, Whit

[libvirt-users] centos6.0 unable to install guests w/ kickstart via virt-install

How does one use virt-install and kickstart ? I've seen others have success but I've had no joy thus far. BTW, my interactive virt-installs for centos6 guests work just fine AND I can do unattended kickstarts for vms by booting from centos6 install dvd and typing the kickstart commands from the boot: prompt. However, kickstart commands in --extra-args when used w/ virt-install just don't seem to work for me. It looks like the kickstart file is just getting ignored .. virt-install -n d2 \ -r 1024 \ --vcpus=2 \ -l http://mirror.cogentco.com/pub/linux/centos/6/os/x86_64/ \ --accelerate -v \ --disk path=/data/vm/d2.img,size=10 \ --os-type=linux \ --os-variant=rhel6 --network=bridge:br0 -x "ks=http://10.1.10.2/id400ks.cfg ip=10.1.10.2 netmask=255.255.255.0 gateway=10.1.10.1 dns=8.8.8.8" The above will boot from the mirror and then launch into the interactive graphical installer as though the kickstart file isn't even there. kickstart file is here http://pastebin.com/ZChtv2C5 I also tried 'virsh edit domain' and set cmdline to <cmdline>ks=http://10.1.10.2/id400ks.cfg</cmdline> and that didn't work. vm would'nt start. details ... uname -a Linux myhost 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Jun 27 19:49:27 BST 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux [root vm]# rpm -qa | grep libvir libvirt-0.8.1-27.el6_0.6.x86_64 libvirt-client-0.8.1-27.el6_0.6.x86_64 libvirt-python-0.8.1-27.el6_0.6.x86_64 [root vm]# rpm -qa | grep kvm qemu-kvm-tools-0.12.1.2-2.113.el6_0.8.x86_64 qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2-2.113.el6_0.8.x86_64 any hlp apprec. We use AD infrastructure for user/group management, and GID 107 is already in use. Can I create an AD entry for the kvm and qemu groups with different GIDs, as well as the qemu user/UID? From looking at the libvirt package, it appears it does a getent to see if these exist and, if not, creates them locally, so I assume adding them to AD is ok - and that the GID/UID specified in the package isn't explicitly necessary. Just looking for verification. - Jeff

[libvirt-users] management tools for kvm
by David M. Barlieb 29 Jul '11

29 Jul '11

I have been installing kvm guests on a number of hosts and have been managing them through a single virt manager on one of the hosts. I am looking for a tool that will allow me to manage them from a windows workstation, possibly using a web interface. Everything I've looked at and read about seems to require a linux workstation to install on, like oVirt or ConVirt. I am looking for a product that can run on a windows workstation using either firefox or ie. dave

[libvirt-users] Seg fault in 0.9.4-rc1
by Whit Blauvelt 28 Jul '11

Hi, Using virt-manager, asking to migrate a kvm domain from the same box virt-manager is running on to another consistently results in libvirtd faulting on the local box. Migration in the other direction, from the second box to the box virt-manager is on, works fine. A libvirtd log made with debug=1 is at http://transpect.com/debug/libvirtd_segfault.log It was doing the same thing with a recent 0.9.3 git version too. This is with virt-manager 0.9.0. Whit

[libvirt-users] qemu:///session vs qemu:///system
by Peter Thomassen 28 Jul '11

Hi, I am running several QEMU VMs on a host machine. There's different persons being responsible for different VMs. I would like to find a way to allow everybody to manage just the VMs they are assigned to (i.e. insert some ISO file, stop the machine and so on) without allowing them to disturb the other VMs. Also, I would like to allow these persons to set up new VMs (there's plenty of unallocated storage) without having to ask me (root) to do it for them, but without allowing them to delete other VMs. (Just setting user rights on the filesystem is not enough, as I use LVM volumes which are not assigned to a user in the typical sense, are they?) I know that most of this could probably be achieved by using qemu:///session instead of qemu:///system. However, I read that there's networking issue in this case (which issues precisely?), and I am also not sure if there's other disadvantages like less efficient handling in some situations by the kernel, or whatever. Is anybody there who could clarify this for me? Thank you, Peter
