Hi! I have read the following blog post: https://blogs.igalia.com/berto/2020/12/03/subcluster-allocation-for-qcow2-i… and watched the video displayed there. 1) To make qcow2 as fast as possible, does it make sense to do the following: [#] qemu-img create -f qcow2 -o extended_l2=on,cluster_size=128k my_image.qcow2 1000GB And then: [#] virt-install —name=MyVM --disk path=my_image.qcow2,size=1000 . . . Will this overwrite the qcow2 file already created or will it keep its characteristics? Does it make sense? 2) I wont’t be moving the VM around much and have the space I need, so I wonder if it will be faster to do the following: [#] qemu-img create -o preallocation=full -f qcow2 my_image.qcow2 1000GB And then: [#] ] virt-install —name=MyVM --disk path=my_image.qcow2,size=1000,bus=scsi,sparse=false . . . (Running bus=scsi so I can trim the image ). I could use a dedicated disk for the VM instead of using qcow2, but I like the flexibility of qcow2. Hi! When running this command on Fedora 35 I get: [#] qemu-img create -o preallocation=full -f qcow2 /var/vm_mail/mytest.qcow2 10GB => Formatting '/var/vm_mail//mytest.qcow2', fmt=qcow2 . . . preallocation=full compression_type=zlib . . . ." Question: When using 'preallocation=full’ I was surprised that the resulting qcow2 image includes the 'compression_type=zlib’ part. Why/when is this compression used when the qcow2 image is fully preallocated? Thanks for input on this! :-) Best regards Richard Taubo

virsh create fails with "Unable to find any firmware to satisfy 'efi'" for aarch64 guest on macOS

I am having trouble when I `virsh create test.xml` with an aarch64 guest on a macOS (Apple Silicon) host. I've wrestled with a variety of issues but the one I simply haven't been able to get past is this regarding the UEFI firmware: error: Failed to create domain from test.xml error: operation failed: Unable to find any firmware to satisfy 'efi' This is with `virsh --version` of 7.9.0 and `qemu-system-aarch64 --version` of 6.1.0, both installed via the common `brew` tool from its main 'homebrew/core' tap. I have confirmed that the loader/nvram files referenced do exist. Running `qemu-system-aarch64 -L help` outputs two lines: /opt/homebrew/Cellar/qemu/6.1.0_1/bin/../share/qemu-firmware /opt/homebrew/Cellar/qemu/6.1.0_1/bin/../share/qemu The …/share/qemu-firmware folder does NOT exist, but symlinking it to a …/share/qemu/firmware folder which does exist does not improve the situation. I have also tried renaming the …/share/qemu/firmware folder (e.g. `mv firmware zzz-firmware`) as some notes I found led me to believe that libvirst might ignore my loader/nvram settings entirely if QEMU had the "new" firmware JSON configuration stuff there? But again no improvement…. How can I debug this further? Hello to everyone. I'm testing Windows 11 with bhyve and I've found an annoying problem that prevents me from completing some tasks that I'm working on. It seems that the virtio-9p driver does not work inside the Windows 11 os emulated with bhyve and maybe also with qemu-kvm. When Windows 11 is launched,I don't see the folder "mnt" mounted on the root folder of Windows 11. Below you can see which bhyve parameters I've used : bhyve -S -c 4 -m 8G -w -H \ -s 0,hostbridge \ -s 1,ahci-cd,/home/marietto/Downloads/virtio/virtio-win-0.1.208.iso \ -s 2,ahci-hd,/mnt/da0p1/Backups/OS/bhyve/Windows/win11.img \ -s 3,fbuf,tcp=0.0.0.0:5900,w=1440,h=900,wait \ -s 8,virtio-net,tap0 \ ----> -s 9,virtio-9p,sharename=/mnt \ -s 30,xhci,tablet \ -s 31,lpc \ -l bootrom,/usr/local/share/uefi-firmware/BHYVE_UEFI.fd \ vm0 Investigating a little bit more and reading from this tutorial : https://virtio-fs.gitlab.io/howto-windows.html I've realized that there should be some problem with the WinFsp <http://www.secfs.net/winfsp> - Windows File System Proxy and or with the virtiofs PCI device driver because I'm not able to enable the virtiofs service with the command used on the tutorial : C:\> sc start VirtioFsSvc it gives the error : "the dependency service does not exist or it has been marked for the elimination. Please advise: After a scheduled crontab snapshot backup of a VM it failed to do a blockcommit, and is currently writing to both the snapshot and the original QCOW2 images. (I don't think it's a bug, and suspect that I caused it by running the backup script manually while the snapshot was already running.) $ virsh blockcommit VM sda --active --pivot --shallow --verbose error: block copy still active: disk 'sda' already in active block job $ virsh blockjob VM sda --info Active Block Commit: [100 %] $ virsh domblkerror VM No errors found Running on Debian 9 (Stretch). $ virsh version Compiled against library: libvirt 3.0.0 Using library: libvirt 3.0.0 Using API: QEMU 3.0.0 Running hypervisor: QEMU 2.8.1 Now, I've read up on the probable solution, somewhat, but running $ virsh blockjob $domain --abort on this production server scares me; and I'm just asking whether it would be advisable to stop services and make a full data backup prior to doing so? It would entail taking the services offline for at least an hour. The snapshot is currently at 12GB, and according to blockjob --info the VM image is 100% in synch. Will appreciate any advice. Libvirt + Debian Live = Heart Attack

Hi everyone! I've built a Debian Live ISO with packages qemu and libvirt to run a VM in the live environment. The guest images are placed in /var/lib/libvirt/images and 2GB each. Everything works great, except for one issue. When starting a VM, libvirt automatically issues a chown command to the images, changing ownership. This results in a copy of the images being created in /run/live/overlay/rw/var/lib/libvirt/images I don't want these copies to be made but can't stop it. I've tried editing qemu.conf user/group, dynamic ownership etc. without any luck. Is there a way to STOP libvirt from changing the ownership of these images?

Hi developers, When the guest OS is booting, the event for live attachment could be caught by libvirt, while the event for live detachment could not. Version: libvirt-7.9 qemu-kvm-6.1 Steps: Terminal 1: ➜ ~ virsh event --loop --all Terminal 2: ➜ ~ virsh start avocado-vt-vm1; qemu-img create /tmp/vdb 10M; virsh attach-disk avocado-vt-vm1 /tmp/vdb vdb; virsh detach-disk avocado-vt-vm1 vdb The outputs from terminal 1: event 'agent-lifecycle' for domain 'avocado-vt-vm1': state: 'disconnected' reason: 'domain started' event 'lifecycle' for domain 'avocado-vt-vm1': Resumed Unpaused event 'lifecycle' for domain 'avocado-vt-vm1': Started Booted event 'device-added' for domain 'avocado-vt-vm1': virtio-disk1 event 'agent-lifecycle' for domain 'avocado-vt-vm1': state: 'connected' reason: 'channel event' As you can see, the device live attachment and the device detachment are both executed when the guest OS is booting, but there is only the event 'device-added' is recorded. So my questions are: 1. Is it the expected results for the results above? 2. If so, what is the internal difference between 'device-added' and 'device-removed'? 3. I notice there is the DEVICE_DELETED event in qmp? Any relation between the 'device-removed' of libvirt and the DEVICE_DELETED of qmp?

Cannot access KVM using virsh console after KVM rebooted or shut off

Dear all, I used ssh with -X option to connect to an Ubuntu remote server where I applied virsh (libvirt) to manage my KVM virtual machines, and my local machine is MacOS. Then, I used virt-install to install a Tiny Core Linux VM, and I got a pop-up Virt Viewer window (via XQuartz) which is the console for my Tiny Core VM. However, if I rebooted my VM, then I checked the VM state by virsh list --all which was running. Then, I tried `virsh console my_vm_domain` but this command got stuck on: > Connected to domain my_vm_domain > Escape character is ^] The `virsh console` command hung without any response. This issue also happened when I used virsh console after I shut down and later started the VM. Even the VM was already started, I cannot return to the VM console by `virsh console`. I can get the VM console in Virt Viewer at the first boot (using virt-install). But, if I shutdown the VM once, I can never access the VM console by virsh console even the VM state is running. Any idea about how to use virsh console? Thanks, Yifei

CPU vendor_id handling

Hello, There are times when spoofing the CPU vendor_id is convenient. For example, some x86 guest OS's only run on Intel and refuse to run on an AMD host. Libvirt does support this in the "host-model" case, but it doesn't work for CPU "host-passthrough". On the QEMU command line it's as easy as: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -cpu host,vendor=GenuineIntel This works fine in libvirt XML: <cpu mode='host-model'> <model vendor_id='GenuineIntel'/> </cpu> This doesn't: <cpu mode='host-passthrough'> <model vendor_id='GenuineIntel'/> </cpu> Libvirt silently strips out the model line after saving "virsh edit ..." Is there any reason why libvirt cannot support this in the host-passthrough case? The status quo means that some folks end up resorting to <qemu:arg value='-cpu'/> hacks which of course causes all sorts of confusion with multiple -cpu lines getting passed to QEMU. Thanks

Greetings, I want to create a new cpu model which is a cross section of cpu flags of 2 different cpus and libvirt capabilites. I've extracted the supported cpu flags of each cpu using lscpu. I've created a cross section of both. I've pulled the suppored cpu flags from libvirt and created a cross section of it with the subset from above. now I want to create a new cpu model out of it. I assume that creating a xml file at /usr/share/libvirt/cpu_map/ with the x86_ prefix that matches the format listed there will suffice for libvirt and later for qemu? Thanks, Dagg.

Iptables, et al best practices for protecting KVM host sharing "hostdev" (ixgbe-vf) interfaces with guests

Hi, I'm a developer and I use VM's for testing patches before submitting them (for various linux-* projects, as well as downstream things like OpenWrt, EPEL, etc). I have a trunked 10Gb/s Ethernet connection coming into my KVM servers (all of which are Supermicro x86_servers running CentOS 8) that have igb and ixgbe NIC's, so SR-IOV capable. Here's the situation: * the host is on a secured internal network, called "sandbox", which is VLAN 4. * the "external" network (i.e. public facing on my ISP) is "dirty", and is VLAN 66. * the main subnet that laptops, WAPs, desktops, etc. sit on is "main", and is VLAN 1. The KVM hosts sit wholly inside "sandbox". They host, however, several guests some of which sit on "main", and some of which sit on "main" and "external" (for instance, if I'm testing an OpenWrt firewall configuration with patches and it needs to be publicly accessible so that my testers can peer with it via IPsec). Oh, and one production guest which hosts "git" and sits only on "sandbox". Guests can be CentOS 8S, Windows 11, Ubuntu 20, Debian whatever, Fedora 33 or 34, OpenWrt, etc. My question is this: what's best practices for making sure that a switch VLAN misconfiguration issue, a cabling to the wrong port, etc. doesn't compromise the KVM server itself? How do I allow my KVM server to *not* be on "external", but some of its guests to be, without compromising security? Being the paranoid sort, I'd like to use defense-in-depth so I'm not counting on any single step to protect me. For instance, I might use ebtables or iptables rules to block VLAN traffic on hosts/guests that I don't want to see certain VLAN's under any circumstances. But I might also add interfaces to the list of things that NetworkManager ignores as /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf lines like: [keyfile] unmanaged-devices=interface-name:eno*,except:interface-name:eno1 unmanaged-devices=interface-name:enp* Thinking about that, I'm wondering what the notation is for telling NetworkManager to ignore all interfaces except those on VLAN 3, for instance. Would that be: unmanaged-devices=interface-name:eno*.*,except:interface-name:eno*.3 Or something else? And what else can I do to further secure my KVM host? I thought about using one untagged (non VLAN'd) Ethernet for the host, and another tagged Ethernet for the guests, but that just seemed like a false sense of security... Apologies for the cross posting... these questions seems to touch on iptables, libvirt, and NetworkManager all at the same time... Thanks, -Philip

Hello again, So I have been struggling to compile the libvirt newest version 7.8.0. I am running CentOS 8 and during the meson build process I am getting non stop dependency fails. I keep installing the necessary packages and slowly progressing. Now the last one that stopped was gnutls. When I go to install that package via yum install gnutls -y it says that it is already complete and installed. Sigh... I am very surprised that there is no package for libvirt via rpm,yum etc. the lastest one installed via yum was 6.0.0. Can someone help by pointing to some where that has these latest packages? Or how best to compile this from source. It is amazing how much is missing from this distro. Thanks again. how can i measure reliably the speed of a virtual disk ?

Hi, we have some domains running on a two-node pacemaker cluster. The disks for the domains are raw files which reside on a SAN. I measured the speed of one domain inside the guest and got completely weird results: between 18MB/s and 750MB/s !?! I measured with hdparm -t. I think this is related because, from the host point of view, some data is on the disk and some data is on chache. The -t i used for hdparm does not influence the host, just the guest. Measures on the host give reliable and reasonable results about 350 MByte/s. How can i measure reliably the speed of a virtual disk ? Hello, I am new to kvm/qemu/libvirt. I am loving it. I am working on setting my first vm with shared file system with virtio-fs. I got an error, and google foo said, my version was too old. I was wondering if it is normal that the load reported from within the guest differs a lot from the guest load monitored on the host? Eg. currently I have guest that reports a load of 12-17 (uptime) while on the host top shows 70% cpu usage, I would expect this to be also around 12-17%.

is there a way to stop a domain in 'D' process state (uninterruptible) ?

Hi, how can i stop/shutdown a domain which is in process state 'D' ? 'D' means uninterruptible and a process in 'D' can't be terminated by kill, even not with kill -9. VM paused during multipath iSCSI reservation

Hi, I'm trying to find the root cause for BZ #1898049 [1]. When setting up Windows HA cluster on Windows Server VMs run on top of oVirt, Windows cluster validator runs couple of tests and fails during test "Validate SCSI-3 Persistent Reservation" and one of the VMs of the cluster is paused with IO error. Hi, I am new to Libvirt and Qemu.I have installed Libvirt 6.10 and qemu-kvm 4.2.0 on CentOS8. I configured and built libvirt based on instructions from https://libvirt.org/compiling.html. But when i tried to create a VM using virsh it shows the following error: *# virsh create /home/abc.xml* *error: Failed to create domain from /home/abc.xmlerror: invalid argument: could not find capabilities for arch=x86_64 domaintype=kvm * When i check the hypervisor capabilities ,it doest show qemu in guest domain type. # virsh capabilities As per the reply from this mailing-list i passed an option while building the libvirt. ie., *meson build -Dsystem=true* It worked for me. But Now, i tried to migrate my work on a new machine with same os and same version as above. As part of,I configured and built libvirt.Also passed *meson build -Dsystem=true *while building libvirt. After installation I tried with *# virsh create /home/abc.xml* It results in the same error shown below. *error: Failed to create domain from /home/abc.xmlerror: invalid argument: could not find capabilities for arch=x86_64 domaintype=kvm * I stuck here.
