[libvirt-users] CPU Model detection with virsh capabilities

Hello everybody, I am a new user discovering libvirt with KVM software. During my first VM creation, I saw an issue with virsh that I can't understand. I wanted to emulate another CPU than the classical qemu32 using virsh. So I used the virsh capabilites command to detect how is detected my CPU host which is an Intel Xeon E5410 and my problem is that this CPU is detected only with the cpumodel "pentium3". But if use the kvm -cpu ? command, it returns me the following capabilities : $ kvm -cpu ? x86 qemu64 x86 phenom x86 core2duo x86 kvm64 x86 qemu32 x86 coreduo x86 486 x86 pentium x86 pentium2 x86 pentium3 x86 athlon x86 n270 Moreover, if i decide to use the pentium3 cpumodel for my KVM VM, the CentOS freeze during its loading. My libvirt and kvm are the following on a Debian Squeeeze : $ virsh version Compiled against library: libvir 0.8.3 Using library: libvir 0.8.3 Using API: QEMU 0.8.3 Running hypervisor: QEMU 0.12.5 Does anybody already had the same issue or am I doing anything wrong ? Hello, i want to start a guest OS in the server, and use spice to achieve graphical interaction with the guest OS. But when i config the XML file, i was confuse by spice . The graphic node is : <graphics type='spice' port='5990' ><listen type='address' address='127.0.0.1'/></graphics> but is has such error as below : libvir: QEMU error : internal error process exited while connecting to monitor: qemu-spice: -spice port=5990,addr=127.0.0.1,disable-ticketing: Invalid parameter 'addr' parse error: port=5990,addr=127.0.0.1,disable-ticketing What is the meaning of <listen type='address' address='*****'/>, If the localhost IP is A and the spice-server IP is B. what should i set the listen type ? to start the Domain and to achieve graphical interaction with the guest OS.

[libvirt-users] How to dedicate a NIC for VM traffic without assigning it an IP

I am testing out a new server with RHEL6 running KVM. We have a few NICs on the server, one of which we would like to dedicate to network traffic to/from the virtual guests. Is it possible to do this without assigning an IP address to the NIC? We're currently doing something like this with Vmware Server, HP's HPVM for HP-UX/IA, and IBM's PowerVM for AIX. -- albert chin (china(a)thewrittenword.com)

Hi, I have to deploy some Ubuntu machines via pxe/dhcp/tftp/preseed/puppet on a vlan. the switches are configured to add vlan tag to the traffic to/from those machines. To test new configuration, i tried to configure a domain alike it was connected by a port of a managed switch configured in general mode where untag id is not 1. Anybody have already done this ? Can i use openvswitch to do this ? Thank you GV

I asksed about this in November last year but got on response. Anyone have any ideas now? Does anyone here have any experience with using KVM/libvirt with RAID1 over IP/DRBD or other HA solution? I'm trying to figure out the hardware configuration I would need to be able to survive a failure or planned shutdown of any one unit in a virtualization cluster. KVM/libvirt makes moving running VM's from one host to another a no brainer, but I'm trying to figure out the right way to be able to take a the storage backend for maintenance without disrupting the VMs. Right now I'm thinking something like KVM + libvirt + heartbeat/corosync + pacemaker + DBRM on Ubuntu 10.04 with 3 or 4 nodes - 2 hosts, 2 storage, or 1 host, 1 host + storage, 1 storage. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hello, I have been trying to migrate a guest from one host to another. But it is showing this error: virsh --connect qemu+ssh://root@host1/system migrate --live --undefinesource testvm3 qemu+ssh://root@host2/system tcp://host2:48160 error: operation failed: failed to retrieve chardev info in qemu with 'info chardev' I have tried this command from the host1 also but it shows the same error. Another thing i would like to ask is the that whats the use of migrateuri in migrate command ? -- Jatin Kumar

Hi all. I've been playing around with KVM for a bit now and have several virtual machines up and running. Having passed what I considered "first look" stage, I'm ready to start using libvirt as a manager. For reference, pre-libvirt, I have started this VM with: /kvm -net nic,model=virtio -net tap,ifname=tap5,script=no -drive file=test1.img,if=virtio,boot=on -curses -no-reboot -m 1g -smp 2/ I have a test environment I like to play with, and created the initial domain XML using virt-install: /virt-install --name "Test" --ram 1024 --vcpus=2 --cpu host --description "Test VM" --import --file test1.img --os-type=linux --os-variant=virtio26 --network bridge=br0,model=virtio --graphics=none --autostart --prompt/ When I look in /var/log/libvirt/qemu/Test.log I see the VM is started with the command (edited down to the relevant parts): //usr/bin/qemu-kvm -S -m 1024 -smp 2 -name Test,process=qemu:Test -nographics -boot c -drive file=/kvms/test1.img,if=none,boot=on /This has two problems: 1) The "-S" is keeping the system from booting 2) the "if=none" needs to be "if=virtio" I've confirmed both by changing -nographics to -curses and watching what happens. For #1, its a big fat nothing (no surprise since -S turns off the CPUs), for #2 grub loads and the kernel boots, but my /dev/vda3 isn't found so "init" can't start. I'm anticipating a 3rd problem: I don't see where to specify that I want the VM to use "tap5" of my bridged network. Can some kind soul please let me know what I need to change in the domain XML file to fix these issues? Thanks, Kevin ps. Just need to know where to update that in the domain XML file. Hi Folks, Host: Ubuntu 10.04 64bits 3 Guests with Ubuntu 10.04 64bits Every monday, when I turn the host on, some guests starts automatically and others don´t. Every week libvirt "elects" a different guest and don´t start it. If I start it manually, it boot fine. Looking at /var/log/libvirtd, it only show the log of the guests that boot. Not a tip of the sleepy guests servers. Could somebody give me a glue on how to find the problem ? Thanks in advance, Josir.

Buddy, I am a noob in libvirt develop. When I want to create a domain by using virDomainDefineXML and displays a window on the host desktop. But when I add the line " <graphics type='sdl' display=':0.0'/>" into the config xml file, the error as below will happen. libvir: QEMU error : internal error process exited while connecting to monitor: Could not initialize SDL(No available video device) - exiting when I delete " <graphics type='sdl' display=':0.0'/>",I can create the domain normally. Who can help me?! Hi All,   I would like to know how to open a console of a running domain using libvirt. Looking at the code, seems that there is no support available currently. Any workarounds for this? Also how do I get the System info(Like system tot memory use/Disk info/cpu info,network info etc through libvirt. Are there any palns to support this in the future release?   Also, how to I add a new API to libvirt?   Thanks, Sharmila

Hi All, I am trying to start a lxc container using libvirt and I am facing an issue due to pivot_root. The return code from the system call “pivot_root” is EINVAL (Invalid arguments). I isolated the issue to this specific condition check within the system call. This is an code snippet from fs/namespace.c::pivot_root * error = -EINVAL; if (root.mnt->mnt_root != root.dentry) goto out2; /* not a mountpoint */ if (root.mnt->mnt_parent == root.mnt) << this represents a circular mount reference goto out2; /* not attached */ if (new.mnt->mnt_root != new.dentry) goto out2; /* not a mountpoint */ if (new.mnt->mnt_parent == new.mnt) goto out2; /* not attached */ * This issue occurs for me, since I am using fstype "rootfs" as "/" and all binaries are mounted ISO's for execution within "/". Hi, I've been trying to use the ruby libvirt binding with vmware esx on F15, however it doesnt seems to work, I get: Libvirt::ConnectionError: Call to virConnectOpen failed: Cannot access CA certificate '/etc/pki/CA/cacert.pem': No such file or directory I've using the same uri with virsh and it works. it seems like somehow the no_verify is not passed, or we are back to old libvirt error messages :) any idea? thanks, Ohad

Hi, When I add a new LUN on an iscsi target and then issue a pool-refresh command on the respective storage pool in libvirt, libvirt will not find the new lun (or notice if luns have been removed). I'm using a Dell PowerVault MD3200i iSCSI Array to hold the volumes for virtual servers in libvirt. In libvirt, I have defined the storage pool as this: <pool type='iscsi'> <name>iscsi01</name> <uuid>52eb9c59-a7ac-a4e8-a26e-7ca112f0dd70</uuid> <capacity>85899345920</capacity> <allocation>85899345920</allocation> <available>0</available> <source> <host name='10.3.1.15'/> <device path='iqn.1984-05.com.dell:powervault.md3200i.6782bcb0000859f3000000004d3eec7d'/> </source> <target> <path>/dev/disk/by-id</path> <permissions> <mode>0700</mode> <owner>-1</owner> <group>-1</group> </permissions> </target> </pool> If I add a new LUN on the iSCSI array, and then issue the command "pool- refresh iscsi01", followed by "vol-list iscsi01" in virsh, the list does not contain the new volume. The only workaround I have found so far for this is to manually log in to the host server as root, do "iscsiadm -m discovery -t sendtargets -p 10.3.1.15" and then issue the pool-refresh command in libvirt. Libvirt is libvirt-0.8.3-4.fc14.x86_64 on Fedora 14. Is this supposed to work like this? If not, will a newer version fix that problem? Regards, Guido

Hello, I've encountered the following error, trying to start a domain: error: internal error Child process (PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin LIBVIRT_DEBUG=2 LIBVIRT_LOG_OUTPUTS=2:syslog:libvirtd /usr/libexec/libvirt_lxc --name vm_14 --console 18 --handshake 21 --background --veth veth1) status unexpected: exit status 1 I see nothing relevant in syslog, google searches have returned nothing. Starting libvirt_lxc manually seems to work (the process never returns), but of course the VMs do not start. I am at a loss on what to do next. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, which is itself a guest system running under virtual box (host is OSX Lion). I've compiled libvirt from git (using /usr as the --prefix, after removing the OS package), LXC containers are installed from a PPA, as the default Ubuntu kernel doesn't enable network namespaces. LXC itself doesn't appear to be a problem, as I can start VMs with lxc-start. Since I required libvirt's API, using LXC directly is not desirable. Does anyone have any tips on what I should be looking for?
