[libvirt-users] Speaking of DNSmasq ....
by William A. Mahaffey III 16 Nov '11

16 Nov '11

.... I am getting a bit tired of those pesky DNSmasq entries in my syslog file, they fill it up about weekly, wash other stuff out of view on a tail. Is there any way to suppress them. or else increase their lease time so that they happen less frequently ? Having a finite lease time for a VM seems nonsensical, it can't go anywhere or disconnect (obviously) .... I tried restarting DNSmasq, but it said 'Socket busy' or some such & didn't restart. Someone on another list said that DNSmasq was/is in fact started by libvirt/KVM/QEMU, & I poked around in the various /etc/sysconfig files, but couldn't find anything related to DNSmasq, whatever options it is started with seem to be hardwired or compiled into one of the pertinent executables .... FC 14, 64 bit, terminally patched up, libvirt 0.8.3-10.fc14 64-bit, qemu-KVM 2:0.13.0-1.fc14 64-bit .... TIA .... -- William A. [libvirt-users] virsh Attach-disk function
by Jatin Kumar 15 Nov '11

15 Nov '11

Hello, I have to use attach-disk function for providing additional storage to the guest domain but i couldn't found proper documentation anywhere which i can follow. ---- For linux (Ubuntu 11.10 server edition, 64bit) guest i tried qemu-img create -f qcow2 disk.qcow2 size virsh attach-disk guest_name --driver file disk.qcow2 sdc Both of the above commands are working fine but when i try to format the drive from inside linux then its size reduces to few KB. Before formatting qemu-img info reports correct info(as expected, correct virtual size) but after formatting the even qemu-img info reports its actual size(few KB) not virtual size. ----- For windows (Windows 2008 Server R2) guest, i tried qemu-img create -f raw disk.img size virsh attach-disk guest_name --driver file disk.img vdb virsh shows that the disk is attached successfully, but i cannot find any disk attached from inside the guest (in storage management). I tried rebooting the guest but same problem. Is there anything that i am doing wrong or missing. -- Jatin Kumar

[libvirt-users] listDomains() not working on Xen
by PREETHI RAMESH 15 Nov '11

15 Nov '11

Hey all, I've been trying to make listDomains() work on Xen but it simply returns an array of null values. Also, while displaying the length of the array returned by listDomains(). Upon using the same function in KVM, I'm able to retrieve the complete array of active machines. I'm positive that active Xen machines are running(cross checked it with xm list). I've been posting this for quite sometime now but haven't received any reply which could debug my code. I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me. Thanks, P Ramesh

[libvirt-users] kvm/libvirt can't use vmdk files? qemu: 'vmdk' invalid format
by Frank Hauptle 15 Nov '11

15 Nov '11

Hi all, I have a RHEL6.1 qemu-kvm hypervisor running a raw image that I need for various reasons to convert to vmdk. I used this process: qemu-img convert server3.img -O vmdk server3.vmdk Then I edited the XML file (/etc/libvirt/qemu/server3.xml) like so: <devices> <emulator>/usr/libexec/qemu-kvm</emulator> <disk type='file' device='disk'> <driver name='qemu' type='vmdk'/> <source file='/raid5/images/guilder3.vmdk'/> <target dev='hda' bus='ide'/> <address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' unit='0'/> </disk> Which basically means that I changed raw to vmdk in this line: <driver name='qemu' type='vmdk'/> but when I try to start the VM, I get this: Error starting domain: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/5 qemu: 'vmdk' invalid format Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/asyncjob.py", line 45, in cb_wrapper callback(asyncjob, *args, **kwargs) File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/engine.py", line 959, in asyncfunc vm.startup() File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/domain.py", line 1128, in startup self._backend.create() File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/libvirt.py", line 330, in create if ret == -1: raise libvirtError ('virDomainCreate() failed', dom=self) libvirtError: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/5 qemu: 'vmdk' invalid format This bit is telling: qemu: 'vmdk' invalid format As a test I tried using libvirt to create a vmdk and then add it to an existing VM, and it failed with the same message. Does this mean that libvirt supports vmdk, but qemu-kvm doesn't? IF so, why does libvirt continue to offer it as an option for KVM VM's?? IF this isn't related to libvirt, I apologise, but I'd appreciate any pointers. kindest regards Frank UWA

Hi: I get a very strange problem when I installing libvirt0.8.7.tar.gz. Here is my infomaton: compute with RHELD6.0 systerm; the systerm comes with libvirt0.8.7,bu I uninstalled it and its dependencies . And then i download the libvirt0.8.7.tar.gz , untar it ,configure --with-esx,make,make install. But I got an error like "libvirtd: /usr/local/lib/libvirt.so.0: version `LIBVIRT_PRIVATE_0.8.7' not found (required by libvirtd) " when i use virsh,or libvirtd. Can someone tell me what is the error mean? Hello, I have a few vms running on a blade server and i want to log the actual RAM and CPU utilization by these vms. dom.info(), libvirt API call is not giving correct results. It is always showing the max allocated resources. I have tried using virt-top also but same problem persists. Is there any thing that i am missing. -- Jatin Kumar

[libvirt-users] Problem with listDomains() in Xen
by PREETHI RAMESH 12 Nov '11

12 Nov '11

This question concerns the usage of the listDomains(). When I run this piece of code in KVM, it works perfectly fine but throws an array out of bounds exception in Xen. Connect conn=null; conn = new Connect("xen:///", true); int[] id = conn.listDomains(); System.out.println("lD of VM " +id[0]); Answer I'd got: Well, your code assumes that id.length is >= 1, but listDomains() can return an empty array when there are no active domains known to libvirt. So you need to check id.length before accessing any element in the array. Follow up- I tried accessing the length of the array and it's 0 all the time. And there are active domains available. In fact, I'm able to getUUID from the domain name. Other functions work fine too. Am I missing something? Can someone please help me? Thanks!

[libvirt-users] How to create virtual machine via virsh shell?
by 张光鹏 11 Nov '11

Hi, I recently in the study of the knowledge of the libvirt(version 0.9.6) and vmware(esx, esxi, vcenter, vspheere client), I use virshshell doing some work such as create virtual machine(but i get an error like "the connetc driver do not support") , define virtual machine(success but when i start it i get an error like "can not find vmdk file 或其所依赖的快照磁盘之一"). Then I realized to first create a volume , but I again meet a mistake like "internal error Could not create volume: NotImplemented". [libvirt-users] Can't assign the 2nd MAC address to the VM
by zhouyb13＠sina.com 10 Nov '11

10 Nov '11

to all who read this message, I can't assign the second MAC to the second NIC for a VM. If only use 1 NIC, assigning MAC works. But not for 2 NICs or more. Do anyone has any ideas? I have installed KVM on Ubuntu 11.10 64bit on my laptop. Also created the bridge on the host, and also taps. I created a RHEL 6.1 64bit VM on this environment and run: sudo kvm -m 512 -drive file=/data/vm/kvm/hslt/rhel61_x64_1st,cache=writeback -boot order=c -localtime -net nic,model=virtio,vlan=1,macaddr=52:54:00:12:34:56 -net tap,vlan=1,ifname=tap2,script=no -net nic,model=virtio,vlan=1,macaddr=52:54:00:12:34:55 -net tap,vlan=1,ifname=tap3,script=no It doesn't work and the VM can NOT start. If I change the command to: sudo kvm -m 512 -drive file=/data/vm/kvm/hslt/rhel61_x64_1st,cache=writeback -boot order=c -localtime -net nic,model=virtio,vlan=1,macaddr=52:54:00:12:34:56 -net tap,vlan=1,ifname=tap2,script=no -net nic,model=virtio,vlan=1 -net tap,vlan=1,ifname=tap3,script=no The VM can start, but the second NIC doesn't work in guest VM, and showing like no such device. After change it to: sudo kvm -m 512 -drive file=/data/vm/kvm/hslt/rhel61_x64_1st,cache=writeback -boot order=c -localtime -net nic,model=virtio,vlan=1 -net tap,vlan=1,ifname=tap2,script=no -net nic,model=virtio,vlan=1 -net tap,vlan=1,ifname=tap3,script=no It works well, with 2 NICs in guest VM.

[libvirt-users] Problem with libvirt daemon
by Wouter - Iamotor 09 Nov '11

09 Nov '11

Hello, I have a problem with the libvirt daemon. I have a little php script which should connect with libvirt, but it won't. When I try to start the libvirt daemon I get this error (using the command libvirtd --listen): 2011-11-09 19:35:18.095: 3560: info : libvirt version: 0.9.7 2011-11-09 19:35:18.095: 3560: error : virPidFileAcquirePath:345 : Failed to acquire pid file '/var/run/libvirtd.pid': Resource temporarily unavailable So the daemon won't start and isn't started yet. If I check if the service is running with ps -ef | grep libvirtd I get this output: root 2865 1 0 15:50 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/libvirtd -d root 3149 1 0 19:17 ? 00:00:00 libvirtd -d root 3206 1 0 19:17 ? 00:00:00 libvirtd -dl root 3300 1 0 19:20 ? 00:00:00 libvirtd --listen --daemon root 3356 1 0 19:21 ? 00:00:00 libvirtd --listen --daemon root 3564 3077 0 19:36 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto libvirtd Here you can see that the service isn't running. How can I fix this problem. There is a .pid file in the /var/run/ directory. I already deleted it and used the command libvirtd -daemon -listen but it won't start. It doesn't show any output but when I use the ps -ef command, I see that the service is not running. Can you please help me? With kind regards, Wouter.

[libvirt-users] libvirt, OSX and VirtualBox - how?
by Brian Candler 09 Nov '11

09 Nov '11

I have a new OSX Lion Macbook and would like to control VirtualBox using "virsh" (as I do with KVM under Ubuntu). I've got this far: * Installed VirtualBox * Installed libvirt (brew install libvirt) But now I'm a bit stuck :-) I ran VirtualBox itself, and created a test VM successfully. If I try to use virsh, this is what I get: Brians-MacBook-Air:~ $ virsh -c vbox:///session error: internal error unable to initialize VirtualBox driver API error: failed to connect to the hypervisor Brians-MacBook-Air:~ $ virsh -c vbox+unix:///session error: Failed to connect socket to '@/Users/brian/.libvirt/libvirt-sock': No such file or directory error: failed to connect to the hypervisor If I try to start libvirtd, this is what I get: Brians-MacBook-Air:~ $ /usr/local/sbin/libvirtd 00:00:18.970: -1: info : libvirt version: 0.9.6 00:00:18.970: -1: error : virNetSocketNewListenUNIX:340 : Failed to bind socket to '@/Users/brian/.libvirt/libvirt-sock': No such file or directory [but directory /Users/brian/.libvirt was created] However, VirtualBox itself is running OK: Brians-MacBook-Air:~ $ VBoxManage list vms "test" {d0d74c25-1dfc-44a4-8a2b-1d25b7972e7c} Furthermore, dtruss suggests that virsh is finding the installed VirtualBox: Brians-MacBook-Air:~ $ sudo dtruss In the future it is usually best to keep one of the lists on an email; that way, if I'm away or not responding, someone else can help you. I've added libvirt-users to this response. In any case, you have the right idea. Libvirt is a control plane for various different virtualization solutions. Arguably the most popular virtualization solution that libvirt can control is KVM, but it can also manage Xen, VMware ESX, LXC (linux containers), UML, etc. Libvirt provides both tools (like virsh and libvirtd) and APIs for interacting with virtual machines. The APIs are things like virDomainShutdown(), virDomainReboot(), etc. The ruby-libvirt package is a thin wrapper around these APIs, so that you can use this functionality from ruby programs. That is, you would be able to do something like: dom.reboot dom.shutdown from your ruby programs. There are also bindings for other languages such as python, php, and perl. There is a lot more information at http://libvirt.org, and there is more information specifically about the ruby bindings at http://libvirt.org/ruby -- Chris Lalancette

Hi guys, I have a little problem here. When I want to install a virtual machine I get this error: libvirtError: internal error cannot find PCI address for balloon virtio Libvirt is running on a debian 5 system with kvm and of course libvirt. How can I solve this problem, I searched on the Internet but there aren't posts about this problem yet. So I don't have an idea where to look for. I hope you guys can help me. With kind regards, Wouter.

[libvirt-users] virt-manager: create lxc app container hangs
by sean darcy 07 Nov '11

libvirt-0.9.6-2.fc15.x86_64 virt-manager-0.9.0-7.fc15.noarch I'm trying to use virt-manager create a simple lxc app container just to see how it works. App is /bin/sh, 128 megs, 1 cpu. All seems to go well, but when I click "Finish" and the "Creating Virtual Machine" box comes up, "Creating Domain..." stays at 0B though the slider keeps going back and forth. Nothing in /var/log/libvirt/libvirtd.log No relevant log in /var/log/libvirt/qemu/ Any help appreciated. sean

[libvirt-users] Finding out if Xen or KVM is used
by PREETHI RAMESH 06 Nov '11

06 Nov '11

I've got 2 doubts: 1.I've been trying to write an application using Libvirt's Java API which should run on both Xen and KVM running machines and execute the Xen or KVM code based on the hypervisor used. I want the physical machine to know if it's running Xen or KVM and execute only that code. While using getURI(), I need to use it as conn.getURI() but then I can't use conn without declaring it previously as Connect conn=new Connect("URI"); Is there any way to get the URI used and hence the hypervisor used? 2. This question concerns the usage of the listDomains(). When I run this piece of code in KVM, it works perfectly fine but throws an array out of bounds exception in Xen. Connect conn=null; conn = new Connect("xen:///", true); int[] id = conn.listDomains(); System.out.println("lD of VM " +id[0]); Thanks for your time. P Ramesh

[libvirt-users] Libvirt exiting and respawning
by Stephen Eilert 05 Nov '11

05 Nov '11

Hi, I'm trying to use Libvirt with LXC, under Ubuntu 11.04, but I can't get it to work. It keeps exiting and being restarted by upstart. Log file follows. It appears that it is complaining, among other things, of QEMU. I am not running QEMU and would like to disable everything except for LXC, but I am not sure it would fix my issue. I've set the log level to debug, even, but didn't see anything out of ordinary. Even resorted to strace, but I don't know enough about libvirtd to try and understand its behavior. Anyone got any clue about what's causing it to decide to exit? # libvirtd --version libvirtd (libvirt) 0.9.2 # uname -a Linux CI-Server-3-Backend-2 2.6.35.4-rscloud #2 SMP Sat Oct 29 21:16:49 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux # lxc-checkconfig --- Namespaces --- Namespaces: enabled Utsname namespace: enabled Ipc namespace: enabled Pid namespace: enabled User namespace: enabled Network namespace: enabled Multiple /dev/pts instances: enabled --- Control groups --- Cgroup: enabled Cgroup namespace: enabled Cgroup device: enabled Cgroup sched: enabled Cgroup cpu account: enabled Cgroup memory controller: enabled Cgroup cpuset: enabled --- Misc --- Veth pair device: enabled Macvlan: enabled Vlan: enabled File capabilities: enabled # cat /var/log/syslog Nov 5 18:42:50 CI-Server-3-Backend-2 libvirtd: 18:42:50.696: 25820: info : libvirt version: 0.9.2 Nov 5 18:42:50 CI-Server-3-Backend-2 libvirtd: 18:42:50.696: 25820: info : networkReloadIptablesRules:1410 : Reloading iptab les rules Nov 5 18:42:50 CI-Server-3-Backend-2 libvirtd: 18:42:50.776: 25820: error : virCommandWait:1393 : internal error Child proce ss (/sbin/iptables --table mangle --delete POSTROUTING --out-interface virbr0 --protocol udp --destination-port 68 --jump CHE CKSUM --checksum-fill) status unexpected: exit status 1 Nov 5 18:42:50 CI-Server-3-Backend-2 libvirtd: 18:42:50.817: 25820: error : virCommandWait:1393 : internal error Child proce ss (/sbin/iptables --table mangle --insert POSTROUTING --out-interface virbr0 --protocol udp --destination-port 68 --jump CHE CKSUM --checksum-fill) status unexpected: exit status 1 Nov 5 18:42:50 CI-Server-3-Backend-2 libvirtd: 18:42:50.818: 25820: warning : networkAddGeneralIptablesRules:1199 : Could not add rule to fixup DHCP response checksums on network 'default'. Hi buddy, I wanna to monitor a domain's life cycle event, so i register a event an a virConnectDomainEventCallback, the code segment is as below: ------------------------ int DomainEventCallback(virConnectPtr conn, virDomainPtr dom, int event, int detail, void * opaque){ /*My code */ ....... } int main(){ /* .....*/ virDomainPtr dom = domain.getDomains("xp"); virFreeCallback freecb = NULL; void *opaque =NULL; virConnectDomainEventCallback cb =DomainEventCallback; virConnectDomainEventRegisterAny(conn, dom, VIR_DOMAIN_EVENT_ID_LIFECYCLE, VIR_DOMAIN_EVENT_CALLBACK(cb),opaque,freecb); /* .....*/ } but such a error happened: libvir: Remote error : this function is not supported by the connection driver: no event support and the libvirt version is 0.9; the driver is QEMU-KVM ,version is 0.14.0. I want to know why this Error will happen? Is the QEMU not support the LIFECYCLE Event ? If it is , how can i monitor the domain's life cycle event( such as started, defined and stopped..) Pls help~~

[libvirt-users] general protection errors
by Alex 02 Nov '11

02 Nov '11

Hi, Some time ago I sent a message about some general protection errors, and didn't receive a response. I hoped I could post again and that someone might have some ideas. I really don't think it is a hardware problem producing these errors, but am otherwise out of ideas. I'm having a problem with a fedora15 x86_64 host with a fedora15 x86_64 guest on a Xeon E3-1240 with 8GB RAM on the guest. This is the only guest. The server is configured as a mail server, using spamassassin, postfix, amavisd, and clamav. Have there been significant changes in the current version from 0.8.8 that is shipped with fedora15? It was previously running without error on different hardware. I migrated the disks to a more powerful server due to load. It's a new server, and has been stress tested with memtest86, mprime, and passmark's Linux test for more than 24 hours without producing a problem. However, when I run the kvm vm, I receive a bunch of errors similar to these on the guest: [169245.360511] clamscan[27448] general protection ip:7f125f2e6ffb sp:7fff117566f0 error:0 in libclamav.so.6.1.11[7f125f229000+9ce000] [29016.445470] clamd[1110] general protection ip:30df2c3981 sp:7fffa08f4fe0 error:0 in libclamav.so.6.1 .11[30df200000+9ce000] There are other applications, such as pyzor, that produce similar errors. Is this something that could be a result of some software configuration error I've made? Is there something I can do to debug this further? There also aren't any errors on the host indicating a kernel problem or hardware issue. Is it possible this is a known error? I was previously trying to improve IO performance by using 'block' instead of 'file' for the device, but had to abandon that idea because it didn't work and I had to concentrate on this problem. Could disabling the cache (cache=none) cause this? [libvirt-users] auto-set /cgroup/*/libvirt/qemu/<vm name>/ directory permissions on creation
by Ben Clay 02 Nov '11

02 Nov '11

Is there a way to automatically set the permissions of cgroups directories created by libvirt when a VM is launched? Although it looks like I can set permissions on top-level /cgroup directories via cgconfig.conf, the cgconfig.conf manpage says "Permissions are related only to enclosing control group and are not inherited by subgroups.". From this, I believe that when libvirt creates VMs, the new directories under /cgroup/*/libvirt/qemu/<vm name>/ will not receive the cgconfig.conf permissions. Where in the libvirt config can I set this? We need users other than root to write to specific subsystems. I can ask on the libcg mailing list as well, but I thought I'd try here first since libvirt is dynamically creating / destroying these groups. Thanks. [libvirt-users] CentOS5: libvirtd filling up /var/lib/libvirt/qemu/save
by Ben Clay 02 Nov '11

02 Nov '11

How can I disable libvirtd from attempting to suspend VMs on poweroff / reboot? It is slowly filling up our /var/ filesystem with save points at /var/lib/libvirt/qemu/save/<vm name>.save, even though I'm not initiating any suspend or restore functionality. I checked /etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf and /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf but could not find anything. This is CentOS 5 with libvirt 0.8.2-22 and kvm-83-239. Thanks.
