[libvirt-users] lxc capabilities
by Chris Haumesser 08 Dec '11

08 Dec '11

I'm experimenting with the libvirt lxc driver, and wondering if there is some way to control the capabilities assigned to the container processes. With lxc-tools, I can specify a configuration option, lxc.cap.drop, which causes the container processes to drop the specified privileges. My libvirt containers seem to run with cap_sys_module,cap_sys_boot,cap_sys_time,cap_audit_control,cap_mac_admin which is rather more permissive than I'd like. In particular, cap_sys_boot allows a container to reboot the host machine. I am running libvirt-0.9.2 from squeeze-backports on debian squeeze. Cheers, -C-

[libvirt-users] tmpfs mounts for lxc container
by Chris Haumesser 08 Dec '11

08 Dec '11

I intend to share a single read-only filesystem root among a number of LXC containers. With lxc-tools, I can specify tmpfs bind mounts within the container, for directories that need to be writable, like /var/run and /var/lock. Is there a simple way to do this with libvirt, or do I need to mount the tmpfs in the host first, and specify it as a filesystem in the xml? Cheers, -C-

[libvirt-users] lxc errors on 0.9.7
by Chris Haumesser 08 Dec '11

08 Dec '11

I'm testing 0.9.7 now with lxc, and get the following error when trying to start a container: 2011-12-07 22:49:26.293: 1997: error : lxcControllerRun:1158 : unsupported configuration: Expected exactly one TTY fd My configuration is very simply: hw 38320e75-1ba0-d85a-6138-532a3a66f13d 102400 102400 1 exe /bin/bash destroy restart destroy /usr/lib/libvirt/libvirt_lxc If I try to add any different type of console, I get an error that only pty consoles are supported. What am I missing? -C-

[libvirt-users] Custom firewall rules
by Hansa 08 Dec '11

08 Dec '11

Hi, Normally Im using webmin to manage my firewall. Webmin fw however breaks the iptable rules invoked by libvirt. Is there a fw tool (beside iptables console command) which can be used without breaking libvirts rules? -Hansa

[libvirt-users] libvirt and LXC
by Ivars Strazdiņš 05 Dec '11

05 Dec '11

Hi there, I'm fairly new to libvirt and LXC, please forgive my ignorance. I was looking for a graphical tool to manage LXC containers and noticed that libvirt has support for LXC. Actually, I expected libvirt to be able to display and manage LXC hosts much like KVM. But it does not happen this way. The only thing I can see with virsh/virt-manager is storage pool with LXC containers, but not much else. No information on running/stopped containers or networking. libvirt is 0.9.7 on both LXC server and client I use to connect to the server. I use lxc+ssh for connection. Am I missing something obvious here? Some configuration file? libvirt documentation does not mention any. Kind regards, Ivars

[libvirt-users] virt-manager / libvirtd connection options
by Shaun Glass 05 Dec '11

05 Dec '11

Good Day, I had previously posted an issue last week where I had qemu/kvm running on RHEL 6.1 and could not create any vm's when connecting from virt-manager running on another machine. Seems virt-manager checks the host it is running on for the capability of creating vm's as opposed to the machine it has connected to. Nobody could give me an answer to why that happens or how to fix. I have in the meantime setup convirture on the RHEL 6.1 machine but would prefer to use virt-manager. Can anyone offer any suggestions to what is the best way to connect from a remote client to the RHEL 6.1 machine running qemu/kvm. The method I was trying to use was ssh with publickey login. The rules for CPU count in XP-Pro are as follows: the physically chip that you install on your motherboard is referred to by M$ as a CPU. XP-Pro will only allow up to two CPUs. Each physical CPU may have as many processors on it as will fit. M$ calls these processors "cores". XP-Pro does not limit cores as long as they do not span more than two CPU's. My host machine has one CPU and four cores (eight if you consider the hyperthreading). KVM is presenting my XP-Pro guest multiple CPUs, not cores. XP will not use more than two CPUs by design. What I am after is a way to have KVM present my guest one CPU with four cores. Not four independent CPUs. I have attached /proc/cpuinfo from Fedora Core 16 guest, along with my /proc/cpuinfo from my host. What am I doing wrong? [libvirt-users] How to use virt-install and http to install openbsd VM in KVM?

[libvirt-users] virt-manager / ssh (publickey)
by Shaun Glass 29 Nov '11

Good day All, I have experienced the following ... I have a rhel 6.1 server running qemu-kvm. I have setup my desktop for a publickey login (root user) to said server so that I may manage the server (qemu-kvm) via the desktop with virt-manager. However, I connect just fine, but cannot create vm's. I get : "No hypervisor options where found for this connection" My laptop does run qemu-kvm via virt-manager and so I decided to setup a publickey login as before and guess what ... I can create vm's. It seems virt-manager bases the creation of vm's based on the hardware / software of the machine it is launched from and not the machine it is connecting to. Is there a workaround / config change etc that can be done so that virt-manager uses the hardware / software configuration of the system it is connecting to ? Regards Shaun Glass

[libvirt-users] VM Manager for Android
by KaBuTe 28 Nov '11

28 Nov '11

To whom it may concern, I send this email to this list to report that I've released a small application for Android that uses libvirt over SSH. It is still under development and it has little features (Start/Destroy/Info) but I'll add more soon. You can check it here: https://market.android.com/details?id=vm.manager ------------------------------------ Diego Pérez kabute(a)kabute.org

[libvirt-users] Failed to start a "virtual machine " service on RHCS in CentOS 6
by xuteng 25 Nov '11

25 Nov '11

Hi， All: I have two physical machines as KVM hosts (clusterA.RHCS and clusterB.RHCS) , an iscsi target set into GFS. All I want is a HA Cluster which could migrate all the virtual machines on a node to another when the first node failed into some error status. So I created a cluster "cluster" using RHCS ,added the two hosts into the cluster . created a fence device . for every virtual machine on clusterA , create a service ,added a resouce which type is "virtual machine" , and set it's properties. But when I start the service ,I got these errors in /var/log/message : [root@clusterA ~]# tail -f /var/log/messages Nov 24 16:19:29 clusterA libvirtd: Could not find keytab file: /etc/libvirt/krb5.tab: Permission denied Nov 24 16:19:30 clusterA modclusterd: startup succeeded Nov 24 16:19:48 clusterA rgmanager[6754]: Executing /etc/init.d/httpd status Nov 24 16:19:56 clusterA modcluster: Starting service: wuguang-xp on node Nov 24 16:19:56 clusterA rgmanager[2198]: Stopping service vm:wuguang-xp Nov 24 16:19:56 clusterA rgmanager[6850]: Using /etc/libvirt/qemu/wuguang-xp.xml instead of searching /etc/libvirt/qemu Nov 24 16:19:56 clusterA rgmanager[6906]: xend/libvirtd is dead; cannot stop wuguang-xp Nov 24 16:19:56 clusterA rgmanager[2198]: stop on vm "wuguang-xp" returned 1 (generic error) Nov 24 16:19:56 clusterA rgmanager[2198]: Marking vm:wuguang-xp as 'disabled', but some resources may still be allocated! [libvirt-users] Difference between "Max Memory" and "Used Memory"
by Jérôme Gallard 23 Nov '11

23 Nov '11

Hello, I am new on this mailing list, so If I do something wrong, don't hesitate to tell me :-) I am using the following version of libvirt : Compiled against library: libvir 0.8.8 Using library: libvir 0.8.8 Using API: QEMU 0.8.8 Running hypervisor: QEMU 0.14.0 I would like to understand the difference between "Max Memory" and "Used Memory" returned by a "virsh dominfo" command. In my configuration both values are equal. This surprises me because my VM is not using all its memory. Perhaps I miss something ? Thank you very much for your help. Regards, Jérôme

[libvirt-users] libvirt and linux-vserver
by Christian Parpart 22 Nov '11

22 Nov '11

Hi, I was just googling around for linux-vserver support in libvirt, however, only found sad ppl complaining about the fact, that there is still no linux-vserver support in libbirt. Despite the fact, that there was some kind of lag in review by more than one person, why isn't it still in? so... merely two years after? I think once the patched would have been applied, ppl would start using it, and then also report bugs in case there were some not yet found by the author nor the single reviewer :) Best regards, Christian Parpart.

Does anyone know of a way to use the Ruby bindings to find out the 'reason' value for the state of the VM? Such as obtaining VIR_DOMAIN_RUNNING_BOOTED for a running domain? -- #ken B-)} Ken Coar, Sanagendamgagwedweinini IT Engineering Tower, Red Hat/RDU "Millennium hand and shrimp!"

[libvirt-users] Defined VM goes missing in multi-threaded environment.
by Sharad Mishra 17 Nov '11

17 Nov '11

In a multi-threaded environment where multiple threads are trying to get list of all VMs on host, we have seen that at times this list is missing couple of VMs. The code used is fairly simple, it makes three libvirt calls. 1. Call virConnectNumOfDefinedDomains() to get number of defined domains. 2. Call virConnectNumOfDomains() to get a list of active domains. 3. If there are defined domains, then call virConnectListDefinedDomains (conn, (char **)names, n_names), where n_names is the count returned from #1. The count returned from #3 is less than the one returned from #1. I have bumped up the connection count in libvirtd.conf to 100, and using 20 threads. On average I get one missing defined VM every 5 runs of this test. I have 25 running VMs and 8 defined VMs on this host. # rpm -aq | grep libvirt libvirt-python-0.8.7-18.el6_1.1.x86_64 libvirt-0.8.7-18.el6_1.1.x86_64 libvirt-cim-0.5.14-1.el6.x86_64 libvirt-client-0.8.7-18.el6_1.1.x86_64 Its RHEL 6.1 running 2.6.32-131.17.1.el6.x86_64 Regards, Sharad Mishra

[libvirt-users] [libvirt-user] questions about disk driver virtio and charmonitor
by Chang Liu 17 Nov '11

17 Nov '11

hi all, I have two questions about libvirt. At first, how can I write a XML file that libvirt could give me a command that include this: if=virtio. -drive file=/dev/vg.vmms/lvm-v097218.sqa.cm4,if=none,id=drive-ide0-0-0,format=raw -device ide-drive,bus=ide.0,unit=0,drive=drive-ide0-0-0,id=ide0-0-0 event I have let the <target dev=vda bus=virtio> the XML file also make the command not include virtio, it's like this: -drive file=/dev/vg.vmms/lvm-v097226.sqa.cm4,if=none,id=drive-virtio-disk0,format=raw,cache=none -device virtio-blk-pci,bus=pci.0,addr=0x4,drive=drive-virtio-disk0,id=virtio-disk0 and my question is, this is command args could enable virtio? or there is some other XML format could let the if=virtio. Second when I boot the vm in the second step after use the kickstart install it. Once in a while, it occurs an error that: monitor socket did not show up.: No such file or > Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/lingjiao.lc/vmms/backserv/bin/../lib/virtmgr.py<http://lingjiao.lc/vmms/backserv/lib/virtmgr.py>", line 1007, in request_vm dom.create() File "/usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/libvirt.py", line 325, in create if ret == -1: raise libvirtError ('virDomainCreate() failed', dom=self) libvirtError: monitor socket did not show up.: No such file or directory But if I reinstall it, it will be ok. If I install hundreds of VMs once, I think this is a headache. Could anybody help me, how can I disable the charmonitor or solve these problem. Thanks. ________________________________ This email (including any attachments) is confidential and may be legally privileged. Hi: I have a rhel6.1 system, before I installed libvirt0.9.6.tar.gz, it already have installed libvirt-0.8.7-xxx.rpm. Can someone tell me how to uninstall the libvirt-0.8.7XXX.rpm ,and then i can install libvirt0.9.6.tar.gz and use it . [libvirt-users] consider bios upgrade...
by jurgen.depicker＠let.be 17 Nov '11

17 Nov '11

Dear all, I didn't get any reply, so I send this mail again. On one of my windows Vms (KVM), I get from time to time a 'windows recovered from a serious error' message, and if I click the wonderfully useful (ahum) support link, I reach this page: http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/Response.aspx/1445/en/5.1.2600.2.0001010… I quote the first part of it here: "Consider BIOS upgrade Microsoft is unable to determine the exact cause of this error. However, this problem was most likely caused by an error in your computer’s random access memory (RAM). RAM is the main internal storage area the computer uses to run programs and store data. During the crash analysis, we noticed the basic input/output system (BIOS) version on this computer does not match the specifications for the central processing unit (CPU), also known as a processor, that is installed on your computer. This can occur when a newer processor is installed on an older system board or older BIOS. Using a BIOS that does not support the installed processor can result in Windows system crashes. Contact your computer manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer for an updated version of BIOS for your computer's processor." Now I'm not sure what this is all about: how can I possibly upgrade my VM's BIOS, or should I do something else? Can it have something to do with the processor specs in the VM's XML definition? Thanks for looking into this, Jürgen

[libvirt-users] Checking if the VM has been created
by Preethi Ramesh 16 Nov '11

16 Nov '11

I'm a Libvirt newbie and I'd really appreciate it if someone could answer my doubts. I'm using Libvirt's Java API. My doubts: 1.Currently, I'm able to create a VM on Ubuntu 11.04 using Libvirt functions domainCreateLinux() and domainDefineXML(). Apart fromt the boolean return status of these operations and running the virsh list command, is there any way to SSH in (login) to the newly created VMs and run applications on them? I tried running virsh console but nothing comes up. Also I tried fixing the XML file to accommodate the console operation( link <http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1159220>) but that was unsuccessful too. 2. If yes, how can I get the IP of the VM created? 3. Is there any function to create image files(in any format qcow or qcow2) using Libvirt API? Right now, I'm using a shell script which creates the image from it's iso. Thanks in advance P Ramesh
