[libvirt-users] How to connect to a remote VM ESXi server with Python language?

Hi, Dear Mr/Mrs. I have trouble in connecting to a VM ESXi server with python. I am a developer using libvirt to control remote VM ESXi with python language. But I am not able to connect to a remote VM ESXi server. I make my try to solve this issue: 1: I use the function libvirt.Open() to open the remote VM ESXi Server, but I don't know how to input the password. It seems that there is no parameter for password input. 2: I use "virsh connect ---". It is succeed when it is executed on locale machine manual, but failed when I invoke this command in python environment. Hello. I would like to redirect some ports from user network to host system. In console i can do it: /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm -drive file=/home/libvirt/qemu-fedora.img -vnc 10.200.1.1:1 -net user -redir tcp:22000::49999 -redir tcp:22001::22 How can i do it with libvirt? I make users network in XML config VM: <interface type='user'> <mac address='52:54:00:48:3f:f5'/> <alias name='net0'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/> </interface> But i don't know - how to make redirecting ports and i cann't fint it in documentation. I am writing a java based client that would be executed from windows that will use libvirt. 1. Got libvirt-java ( http://libvirt.org/sources/java/libvirt-java-0.4.7.tar.gz) and build a jar out it (ant with no params) 2. Then, according to http://libvirt.org/windows.html, built a dll using the "MSYS build script" 3. Got 2 files libvirt-0.dll and libqemu-0.dll When I run the sample example(from Eclipse) from http://libvirt.org/java.html I get the following error: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Unable to load library 'virt': %1 is not a valid Win32 application. at com.sun.jna.NativeLibrary.loadLibrary(NativeLibrary.java:169) at com.sun.jna.NativeLibrary.getInstance(NativeLibrary.java:242) at com.sun.jna.Library$Handler.<init>(Library.java:140) at com.sun.jna.Native.loadLibrary(Native.java:368) at com.sun.jna.Native.loadLibrary(Native.java:353) at org.libvirt.jna.Libvirt.<clinit>(Unknown Source) at org.libvirt.Connect.<clinit>(Unknown Source) at Main.main(Main.java:26) Also tried instead of step 2 cross compile in Fedora - same error message when I use new dll's. [libvirt-users] for a guest accessing host "full disk", how to prevent host vgscan

Hi All. I have a dell system with a H700 raid. Within the hardware RAID config I've created a "virtual disk" which I have assigned to one of my guests. On the host the device is "/dev/sdb", on the guest it's "/dev/vdb". This works fine. Within the guest, we have created lvm PV on /dev/vdb (using the whole disk - no partitions) and created a volume group. The guest's hostname is "argo" and the vg is called "vg_argo_bkup". When I reboot the host, it does a vgscan and finds the volume group and activates it in the _host_, which I need to prevent (I think??). I have successfully done this by filtering "/dev/sdb" in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf (which does NOT work as advertised BTW), but referencing the extremely volatile SCSI "sd*" names seems a terrible way to do this. If I fiddle around in the HW raid config, the /dev/sd? may change. I plan on creating about 10 more VM's spread over a number of machines over the next weeks with a very similar setup, and the admin overhead seems like it'll be onerous and error-prone. I'd love to be able to filter the volume groups by VG name instead of pv device node. The host's hostname is "narnia" and I'd love to say, 'vgscan --include-regex "vg_narnia.*"' or something similar, if you get my drift. Does anyone have a best practice for this? I'm sure iSCSI enthusiasts must have the exact same issue all the time. Oh... I'm using centos 6.2 on host and guest, libvirt-0.9.4-23.el6_2.1.x86_64, although it hardly seems a libvirt issue at all, it seems to be a lvm host issue mainly. Thanks, David Mansfield

Cheers, I'm working on Ubuntu server 11.10 32 bit with libvirt 0.9.2 and qemu-kvm 0.14.1. I have a user oneadmin:oneadmin who also belongs to kvm and libvirtd groups. I have set qemu.conf and libvirtd.conf with user/group oneadmin. I have disk.0 and deployment.0 files owned by oneadmin. My system does not support hardware virtualization so I don't have /dev/kvm. I'm able to start VM with qemu anyways but when issuing the command: virsh -c qemu:///system create deployment.0 I get: error: Failed to create domain from deployment.0 error: internal error process exited while connecting to monitor: 13:00:52.354:1291: info: libvirt version: 0.9.2 13:00:52.371: 1291: debug : virCommandHook:1826 : Waiting on parent for handshake complete on 23 13:00:52.371: 1291: debug : virCommandHook:1842 : Hook is done 0 open /dev/kvm: No such file or directory failed to initialize KVM: Operation not permitted "error while connecting to monitor" looks to me as something permission-related but I tried a lot of combinations between the qemu and libvirt conf files and nothing worked (yes, I always restarted the system after every change). Hi folks, We experiencing some difficulties in getting IPMI to work on RHEL 6 running as Guest using KVM. We have verified that IPMI works on RHEL 6 if installed on bare metal. Is this a known issue? Hi, I'm interested in a setup in which one guest receives all its networking services (routed IPv4, dhcp, tftp, dns) from another, which is connected via a routing through the hypervisor. I think this is a lot like Guest C and Guest B in the diagram at http://libvirt.org/archnetwork.html. I have experimented with setting the network between Guest B and the hypervisor as a routed network, and the network between Guest B and Guest C as an isolated network. The problems I am having is that I am not sure how to set up a persistent static route to Guest C via Guest B, (I created a file with the route called route-virbr3 in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts on the hypervisor, but it doesn't seem to do anything), and the changes I need to make to allow traffic with Guest C's source IP to come from Guest B's interface with the hypervisor seems to get overwritten or superceded by additional rules that are created when I start my machine.) I can see something about a qemu-ifup script mentioned at http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Networking. Should I create something like that and put some sort of `ip route add` command in it? When should that script be called? Is there a way to specify the necessary firewall and routing rules in the xml network configuration? I am working with a Fedora 16 hypervisor and Guest B is a Centos 6 machine. I'd like to use all sorts of different distributions where Guest C is. Regards, Andrew.

Hi,All: Using KVM + libvirt + virt-manager, I meet a strange problem , some cloned vm cannot get correct ip address via bridge network, but some vm can. Hello, I'm not sure if I am having a kvm/qemu issue, a virt-manager issue, or a libvirt issue, so if I am asking the wrong crowd please let me know! In short, restoring some suspended kvm guests via virt-manager is failing because libvirt cannot read the qemu header. I cannot find any documentation on what this means. From virsh's limited documentation I was able to gather that there is probably something wrong with an xml file somewhere, but I cannot find it. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Synopsis: I have 5 KVM guests on a Fedora 16 laptop host. I manage them locally through virt-manager. These guests are JUNOS 10.1R1 (installed over FreeBSD 4.1 mini-inst) on a patched bios (SeaBIOS pre-0.6.1-20100805_064324-Compaq8510w). One time I suspended my laptop and the kvm domains were suspended as well. Hello, The host runs on CentOS 6. I have installed a guest, CentOS 5.7, using libvirt. I am having difficulty understanding how to assign a public static IP address to the guest. From what I understand by reading the Wiki, I think I require routed mode. The ISP has provided a 'portable' IP routed to the VLAN of our servers. I want to assign this IP address to the guest. From the virtual machine hardware details window, I see that "Virtual network 'default' : NAT" is selected for the source device field. I was playing with SASL authentication a bit today and I wasn't able to get libvirt to authenticate against PAM (or anything else except the sasldb, although I didn't try Kerberos). Does anybody know off the top of their head what mechanisms/password check options work? I'm trying to figure out if I'm attempting the impossible. Dave

[libvirt-users] Temporary use of disk space when deploying KVM with qcow2 ?

Hello, I'm using libvirt to deploy a series of 7 KVM (in qcow2 format) sequentially. The base image of the qcow2 is an ubuntu server of around 1.6GB. The environment where i am doing this is a Live USB Ubuntu with a persistence file (so that changes made remain). So, the problem: * If the persistence file (i.e. free disk space in the live ubuntu) is up to around 1.6GB, the qemu process of launching the first one of the KVM gets stuck, and a few seconds later an Ubuntu message pops up saying there is no disk space left. * If the persistence file is a bit bigger (100 MB more), it can launch the 7 KVM machines without any disk space problems. This would suggest that during the deployment of one virtual machine, there is a short period of time where a big amount of disk space (similar to the size of the base image) is used (even if i am using qcow2 vms) and afterwards released, so it can be used to launch the second vm, released, used for the third, and so on. If this is correct, i would like to know who is using that space, since my intention would be to, if possible, redirect this temporary disk usage to a RAM filesystem such as tmpfs, so that i don't need such a huge persistence file in the USB. I'm aware that this might be related to qemu-kvm rather than to libvirtitself, but i can't find information about it and i would appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction. [libvirt-users] Why does libvirt use XML firewall rules?

Hi there, When creating a VM with a persistent virtual network, libvirt creates an XML file with firewall definitions and stores it in /etc/libvirt/<hypervisor>/networks/. The XML file is (to my knowledge) incompatible with iptables-restore. Therefore you cant manage your firewall with other iptables (GUI) tools unless libvirt lets you a) import extra rules, b) has an option to export the XML rules into iptables-save format or c) something else. If a) , b) or c) is possible then this discussion is of course useless and I would be pleased to know how its done :) If not, then lets get the discussion started. IMHO, saving rules into XML instead of using iptables-save is absurd since youll have to code stuff which is already coded. Also youll make it incompatible with the tools which are readily available. Hi everyone, When i start a libvirt domain (on KVM) with network filtering (using filterref clean-traffic for example), the filter works ! But ... i don't understand how/why it works :( Indeed when i look at ebtables -L iptables-save & arptables-save (and KVM command), I see no filtering rules (which is surprising because clean-traffic requires at least ebtables to be installed). Is it normal ? Do i miss some xxtables administration command to see them ? What appends if i do a arptables-restore, iptables-restore after the vm startup ? Does it remove network filtering rules from xxtables ? No impact ? Thx by advance for your help ZZ, what is the magic behind my questioning ?

Hi： I have a host Redhat6.1 ，when i install os the libvirt0.8.7 were contained . Latter i installed libvirt0.9.3.tar.gz without uninstall the libvirt0.8.7, i just use the virsh functions. Now i want to install libvirt0.9.7.tar.gz , and i uninstall libvirt0.9.3 and uninstall libvirt0.8.7 with "rpm -e" , i also delete some files contains vesion number 0.8.7 or o.9.3. Today i install libvirt 0.9.7 , untar and install wit "./configure --prefix-/usr/local/libvirt --with-esx", then " make" "make install" ,and i make a link "ln -s /usr/local/libvirt/bin/virsh /usr/bin/virsh" , so i can use virsh . But i cannot start libvirtd ,when i use "service libvirtd start/status.." ,it returns "libvirtd:unrecognized service". I found a libvirtd file in /usr/sbin/. Could someone help to resolve the problem ? So, my problem: * If the persistence file (i.e. free disk space in the live ubuntu) is up to around 1.5GB, the qemu process of launching the first one of the KVM gets stuck, and a few seconds later an Ubuntu message pops up saying there is no disk space left. * If the persistence file is a bit bigger (100 MB more), it can launch the 7 KVM machines without any disk space problems. This would suggest that during the deployment of one virtual machine, there is a short period of time where a big amount of disk space (similar to the size of the base image) is used (even if i am using qcow2 vms) and afterwards released, so it can be used to launch the second vm, released, used for the third, and so on. If this is correct, i would like to know who is using that space, since my intention would be to, if possible, redirect this temporary disk usage to a RAM filesystem such as tmpfs, so that i don't need such a huge persistence file in the USB. I'm aware that this might be related to qemu-kvm rather than to libvirt itself, but i can't find information about it and i would appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction. Hi All, I have two kvm guests running with a bridged configuration bound separately to br0 and br1 on my Fedora 15 host. I'm attempting to create some nwfilter rules on br1 and am running into a bunch of problems that have me scratching my head. libvirt version: 0.8.8-7 What I've noticed on the second host is as follows: - Most all nwfilter rules that I create for the host on br1 don't work as I would expect. If I create a rule for TCP dest port 22 with direction set to 'in', I would expect I could connect to the host via SSH from another host, but I only see a SYN and not a full connection. If I set the direction to 'inout', SSH seems to work. - A nwfilter rule for UDP dest port 53 with direction set to 'out' or 'inout' doesn't allow lookups to an outside DNS server. - In the configuration of one VM, the source Virtual network device lists "Host device vnet0 (Bridge 'br0') and the other lists "Host device eth1 (Bridge 'br1')". I don't see anything different in the two hosts XML configuration files that describe the difference, but I'm concerned that the second VM on br1 is misconfigured. I notice a few iptables rules with "PHYSDEV match --physdev-in vnet1" listed in them, should these really read "PHYSDEV match --physdev-in br1" given the configuration virt-manager is reporting? I would appreciate any pointers. -Kevin

Some folks may be aware of the SpecVirt benchmark, where KVM is giving the competition something to worry about :-) http://www.spec.org/virt_sc2010/results/ >From the POV of libvirt uses though, there has been one annoyance with the previously submitted results though, in that they have been invoking the KVM command line directly. This has made it harder for people who are deploying KVM using libvirt to replicate the optimal configurations. I'm pleased to be able to point out that the latest result published for KVM by IBM has in fact been done using libvirt! [libvirt-users] lxc capabilities

I'm experimenting with the libvirt lxc driver, and wondering if there is some way to control the capabilities assigned to the container processes. With lxc-tools, I can specify a configuration option, lxc.cap.drop, which causes the container processes to drop the specified privileges. My libvirt containers seem to run with cap_sys_module,cap_sys_boot,cap_sys_time,cap_audit_control,cap_mac_admin which is rather more permissive than I'd like. In particular, cap_sys_boot allows a container to reboot the host machine. I am running libvirt-0.9.2 from squeeze-backports on debian squeeze. Cheers, -C-
