On Fedora 17 I used virsh pool-edit to change the directory of the default pool that virt-manager creates, and I noticed that my changes were discarded unless I made the changes with the pool stopped. Is that expected behavior? Dave

(The device disappeared from the lspci autoput the host and was listed on the guest.) After shutting down the virtual maschine it refused to start again. Hi all I have a Fedora release 17 (Beefy Miracle) with libvirt versions: libvirt-0.9.11.3-1.fc17.x86_64 virt-manager-0.9.1-3.fc17.noarch I have allowed non-root user to user libvirt by allowing the user through polkit cat /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/cat 50-org.example-libvirt-remote-access.pkla [Remote libvirt SSH access] Identity=unix-group:virt Action=org.libvirt.unix.manage;org.libvirt.unix.monitor ResultAny=yes ResultInactive=yes ResultActive=yes After doing the above i am able to connect to virt-manager as non-root user but unable to create storage pools. Hi, I am virtualizing with KVM via libvirt and virt-manager. To have decent amounts of Entropy in the guest, I tried loading virtio_rng in a running VM. Despite the module being loaded, I didn't get any log entries, and also no /dev/hwrng. Do I need to enable the virtualized random generator in libvirt/virt-manager? If so, how do I do that? Is the support for this rather recent feature already implemented in qemu-kvm 1.0, libvirt 0.9.12 and virt-manager 0.9.1? Any hints will be appreciated. [libvirt-users] Remote virtualization with Xen, feasibility

Hello. I'm wondering if a scenario which I'm tasked to setup would be feasible to create with libvirt. The scenario is; we want to have one computer running ns-3[1] which will simulate a MANET[2] this computer will be connected to a second computer(how is not quite clear to me yet) this second computer will be running several Xen or LXC domains where each domain is connected to a node in the ns-3 simulation. Inside each domain we will run an program which will use service-discovery to interact with all the other domains which from the point of view of a specific domain will look like wireless nodes in a network(accomplished with the ns-3 simulation, connecting the ns-3 nodes to taps[3] outside the simulation and then connecting these taps to the remote computer running libvirt and Xen or LXC). What I'm wondering is if the libvirt side of this is feasible, namely creating several domains remotely, on one or hopefully more computers, having the domains on the same computer share a storage area where we can place shared programs and where programs running inside the domains can log output to. Then after the program is done retrieve these output logs and shutdown all of the domains. When it comes to Xen, we will most likely crate a snapshot of a running Linux distribution that we can quickly start so we don't need to do a full boot process every time. Below is a very simple illustration of what we want to accomplish. [libvirt-users] Libvert live migration problem!

Hi all, I've succeed to do live migration between two PCs. However, I found I could not connect the VM by host IP from a remote PC before migration and can only connect it from host PC. If I appended the VM with the following line at the end of the xml file: <listen type='address' address=host_IP port='PORT'> I can connect the VM via VNCVIEWER with host_IP:PORT. However, the libvirt reported: error: failed to bind the <host_IP, PORT>...It seems that the IP:port is already bound. Can someone show how to do live migration using NFS? Thanks, Yi

[libvirt-users] Cannot create macvlan devices on this platform

Hi, libvirt (0.9.11) refuses to start KVM based virtual machines on my system when changing the network connection from "host bridge" to "direct" (macvtap/macvlan), neither in "bridge" nor in "vepa" mode: "Cannot create macvlan devices on this platform" That's astonishing because I can easily setup working macvlan devices using the "ip" command: "ip link add link eth0 type macvlan". Hi, for tl;dr people: how we can get uuid or name of a vm within a guest os? description: We are trying to implement a guest-agent for Archipel* to let us run simple commands on guest os**. in archipel each vm has its own jid (jabber id), user will open a chat conversation to vm's jid and send messages like "!exec ls", then we check that user (jid) who sent !exec has permission to run commands on our guest. if he/she had permission we will send a message to jid of guest-agent with message "ls", guest-agent will run command then will send result to vm's jid and we tunnel result to user. now problem is that we don't know (in guest-agent) that what xmpp server we should connect to and what jid is trusted to recieve command from. xmpp server is running on hypervisor and trusted jid is {uuid-of-jvm}(a)hypervisor.com. right now we've used internal dhcp to set hostname of guest os to something like "uuid-of-jvm.hypervisor.com" using this switch (qemu): -net user,hostname=uuid-of-jvm.hypervisor.com it works but it's not best solution as it only works with qemu and we need a solution that works with other virtualization platforms that libvirt supports. * https://github.com/ArchipelProject/ ** yes, we know about vnc / ssh / ... but by implementing such thing we can add cool stuff in archipel like status of services that are running on guest os. -- regards, behrooz

Libvirt Version: 0.9.8 Hi: I added a new api for qemu_driver. and both added libvirt.c and remote. I tested it and it worked well. the function of this new api was add a new field in xml config of domain. (I added it like qemudDomainSetMemoryFlags)at the same time, I added a new member to struct virDomainDef. then I tested xml config converted to virDomaindef and virDomainDef converted to xml config both well(just tested this new api). But there was a problem, if I change the memory size or cpu number then apply it with virtManager. the xml config was changed. but there is no field in the xml what I added. I guest the virDomainDef member in virDomainObjPtr wasn't update. hi, I compiled the libvirt-0.9.10 and started the libvirtd with sudo. Unfortunately, I got an Error, saying 'virDomainDefParseXML unknown OS type hvm'. I debugged it and found in function virCapabilitiesSupportsGuestOSType, the parameter caps->nguests is 0. On the other hand, I tried start the libvirtd with common user, and creating domain with virsh, i found the caps->ngusts is 2 and had one value 'hvm', so it didn't complain the error above, instead, it complained could not load PC BIOS bios.bin. I'd say I searched a lot and people say it's caused by without loading kvm and kvm-intel module. So, I checked and it is loaded. Any tips here?

Folks, I'm a new user and I'm trying to build a standalone application using libvirt-cim (rather than use a full-fledged CIMOM). I need some help. While calling the CMPIInstanceMI->ft->enumerateInstances, I need to pass a reference to CMPIObjectPath. My application is crashing because I don't know what is the correct constructor for this. If I do ref = CMPIObjectPath () then all the FT pointers are null. Can someone please guide me on how to construct CMPIObjectPath instance before passing to enumerateInstances? Thanks much Ashish

[libvirt-users] Reconnection problem with a USB device

This is going to be a bit off the wall as I doubt many people are using a VM in quite the same manner as I am in this case. I have a new scanner at home, a Mustek A3USB 1200 Pro, which requires a vendor supplied version of libsane to run. That is a pain in the behind just to start with. To use that scanner requires a 32b machine with sufficiently old versions of various libraries. My primary machine, a laptop, is 64b and runs current software. So, in order to use my inexpensive large format scanner, I had to set up a 32b VM on my laptop that is running an old linux. I tunneled the USB device to it: <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='usb' managed='no'> <source> <vendor id='0x055f'/> <product id='0x040b'/> <address bus='3' device='8'/> </source> <alias name='hostdev0'/> </hostdev> That works fine... until I have to go into the office. Once I disconnected the USB go away for 10 hours and come back, it fails to re-engage. The USB seems to get grabbed up by the laptop itself instead of the VM. The only way to get it to work again is to halt the VM and do a cold boot of it. This is annoying to say the least because I lose 'state' when I boot, ie the set of windows and files open that remind me of where I left off on a project before going to work. Any suggestions how to get around this annoying issue?

[libvirt-users] How can a bridge be optimized?

Hi, Netperf tells me that a KVM VM using a bridged connection to a system across the Gigabit LAN sees on average about 1/10th of the bandwidth the host sees. This is on very lightly loaded hosts, although with multiple low-use VMs. I've tried adjusting the CPU throttling after seeing that mentioned as a possible factor in slowing down a bridge, but it has not much if any effect here. Is there a good guide somewhere to what might make a difference with this? I recall the kernel recently adding a new alternative for handling VM interfaces, but can't recall what it was called. Would that be a marked improvement? Is it supported by libvirt? Thanks, Whit

[libvirt-users] Libvirt hangs until service is stopped and started again

Hi, The connection to libvirt seems to be hanging until the service is stopped and started again. But when i checked the status of libvirtd service (on Centos) and libvirt-bin service (on Ubuntu), service is still running. But any new connections and existing connections remain hung.I am using 0.9.4 version of libvirt on both the machines. Hi, I have a problem regarding the Ruby bindings of Libvirt. The sort summary is that the connection does not closed properly when I have retrieved a domain from it. Hi,I am use virsh and test the migration command, on server.example.com: # rpm -qa|grep libvirt libvirt-0.9.10-21.el6.x86_64 libvirt-python-0.9.10-21.el6.x86_64 libvirt-client-0.9.10-21.el6.x86_64 # virsh version Compiled against library: libvir 0.9.10 Using library: libvir 0.9.10 Using API: QEMU 0.9.10 Running hypervisor: QEMU 0.14.1 #cat /etc/libvirt/libvirt.conf uri_aliases = [ "host1=qemu+ssh://root@host1.example.com/system", ] node1.example.com is the same version with server.example.com and on both server has the same storage pool with same path, first step,as use the local storage,i copied the vm win7's disk from server.example.com to node1.example.com's storage pool,and did a pool-refresh. 2nd step: on server.example.com i use this command to do the migration job: #virsh start win7 # virsh migrate win7 host1 --copy-storage-inc --persistent --live --unsafe when the migation process begin ,i can see the win7 appear on the node1.example.com whos status is paused,but just after a few secs,errs come out: (server.example.com) # virsh migrate win7 host1 --copy-storage-inc --persistent --live --unsafe error: operation failed: migration job: unexpectedly failed error: Reconnected to the hypervisor i've tried to solve this problem, but failed. thanks.
