[libvirt-users] Issues to manage RAM on openvz guests
by Aurelien Martin 22 Mar '14

22 Mar '14

Hi all, I'm playing with virsh, and I succeed to mange easily some KVM nodes. But I have issues to size RAM of openvz guests. virsh set by default the the memory to 256M on each guest instead of that I specify in the XML I have to modify by end the variable PHYSPAGES on each /etc/vz/conf/id_of_my_vz.conf Please follow the XML dump and the steps that I did. [libvirt-users] Live migration process in src/qemu_driver.ca
by Faizul Bari 20 Mar '14

20 Mar '14

Hello, I have been trying to track different phases of a live migration process. I am using libvirt with qemu-kvm. I am issuing migration commands using virsh. Now, I want to measure the time spent in each phase of live migration, e.g., pre-copy and stop-copy. I stumbled upon the file qemu_driver.c. It has functions like qemudDomainMigratePrepare2 qemudDomainMigratePerform qemudDomainMigrateFinish2 I want to know whether qemudDomainMigratePerform and qemudDomainMigrateFinish2 directly map to the pre-copy and stop-copy phase? or the qemudDomainMigratePerform function performs both of them? Any pointers or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Regards ---------------------- Md. Faizul Bari PhD Student David R. [libvirt-users] Linux host / Windows guest sharing
by Pal, Laszlo 20 Mar '14

20 Mar '14

Hi, I'm almost give up again because for a day I try to access my windows kvm guest from FC20 :) I've tried everything including virtio mapping mount -t 9p -o trans=virtio,version=9p2000.L hostshare /tmp/hostfiles where I get the following messages mount: special device hostshare does not exist --- --- to be honest clipboard sharing would be enough for me, so I googled why it is not working and I applied this: https://mytechdepot.wordpress.com/2013/02/22/enabling-clipboard-copy-paste-… yum install spice-vdagent # chkconfig --add spice-vdagentd # service spice-vdagentd start but, the clipboard sharing isn't working.... Do you have any idea to solve any of the issues above? Thank you Vlad

[libvirt-users] Adjust disk image migration (NBD)
by Joaquim Barrera 20 Mar '14

20 Mar '14

Hi all, As I am doing some tests with qemu, I realized that the way it does 'migrate -i tcp:DEST:444' is not the same as 'libvirt migrate --copy-storage-inc'. Basically qemu uses the same stream as RAM migration and libvirt takes advantage of NBD transfer. With virsh migrate-setspeed I observed that one can only control the transfer throughput of RAM, but not disk synchronization. At least this is what I can see in bmon when doing a migration with incremental copy. The question is: Am I missing something or it is not implemented? Thank you guys!

[libvirt-users] KVM networking help needed - Promiscuous network configuration for guest Snort instance
by Philip Wang 18 Mar '14

18 Mar '14

Hi, I am looking for some direction on how to configure KVM networking so that a promiscuous bridge/host nic/guest nic allows two different network monitoring packages to sniff the same physical traffic. The idea is to run a commercial package on the CentOS 6.5 host and Snort, via Security Onion, on the guest, both being fed by a physical switch SPAN or physical firewall TAP. The host has two NICs, one for management and one for sniffing. I am using libvirt and libvirt-manager to supplement configuration. I have basic bridge networking configured and connected on the management NIC, but I can't seem to figure out the missing piece for getting physical network traffic from the SPAN/TAP port to the Xubuntu guest NIC for sniffing. I have seen mention of setting the bridge aging time to 0, but that did not seem to work and the only place I could find to verify the setting was by running brctl showmacs <brisge name>. I have also seen posts saying this was more of a workaround, without discussing an alternate method. I have tinkered with setting the host nic, bridge, and guest nic to promiscuous mode, only to see relatively equal traffic climb on the host nic and bridge, but not the guest nic. Other searched have turned up discussions about tunctl and its implementation, so at this point I figured a reality check was in order. Is this idea feasible? If so, where should I be looking for information on how to implement it? Thanks in advance for any pointers.

[libvirt-users] Undoing domiftune changes
by Brian Rak 18 Mar '14

18 Mar '14

If I apply some network limits with domiftune, how do I undo them (without restarting the VM?) So let's say I did: # virsh domiftune SRVID8736 vnet0 inbound.average: 0 inbound.peak : 0 inbound.burst : 0 outbound.average: 0 outbound.peak : 0 outbound.burst : 0 # virsh domiftune SRVID8736 vnet0 --outbound 1000,1000,1000 How I do revert this back to what it was before I set it? If I try "--outbound 0,0,0" it fails, saying "error: outbound average is mandatory"

[libvirt-users] a question on vCPU setting for lxc
by WANG Cheng D 18 Mar '14

18 Mar '14

Dear all, I am not clear about the 'vcpu' element for CPU allocation. I allocated 1 vCPU to my container, after I started the container, I ran 4 computation-intensive tasks on the container. And I found all the 4 physical core are 100% used (my host has 4 physical cores and no other application ran on the host except the container). That is, all available cores were used by the container. I want to know how to give a hard limitation for CPU usage of a container. So I don't understand what 'vcpu' setting can be used for. I know that another CPU allocation element 'shares' can also be used, but this elements only give a relative quota. If new containers are started, the CPU quota for the already started containers will change. Regards, Cheng

[libvirt-users] Sys::Virt integration into other event loops
by Scott Wiersdorf 17 Mar '14

17 Mar '14

Hi all, I’m trying to integrate Perl’s Sys::Virt into an already existing AnyEvent program. I’m accustomed to writing things like this: use EV; use AnyEvent; use AnyEvent::Handle; my $h = AnyEvent::Handle->new(fh => $fh, …); $h->on_read(sub { … }); EV::run; ## start the event loop I can add some code in the on_read() handler and every time the $fh has something to read, it will fire off. I’d like to do something similar with Sys::Virt, but I can’t seem to wrap my head around its event system. The only examples I can find are the ones included in Sys::Virt source, which consist of a series of run_once() calls, or a while loop around run_default(). Does anyone have any idea how I can make this play nicely with an existing event loop such as EV, or even to fire off ($cv->send) an AnyEvent condvar when the event I set in domain_event_register_any() triggers? Our current solution involves setting an AnyEvent->timer, which periodically fires off and then does a run_once() to see if any events happened during the period, but we’d like something more responsive (i.e., triggers when the event actually occurs) and less poll-y feeling. I’d appreciate any advice you may have—thanks! Scott

[libvirt-users] Problem in getting memory statistics
by Pasquale Dir 17 Mar '14

17 Mar '14

Hello, I need to get how much memory is used by a guest system, in order to implement some monitoring function which tells me if the system is overstressed. I am currently using java apis and the binding which was suggested to me was Domain.memoryStats(); This is a binding to int virDomainMemoryStats (virDomainPtr<http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt.html#virDomainPtr>dom, virDomainMemoryStatPtr<http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt.html#virDomainMemoryStatPtr>stats, unsigned int nr_stats, unsigned int flags). Problem is that it returns me just tags 0,6 and 7. Looking at the documentation I see they are not what I am looking for...I would rather need 4 (VIR_DOMAIN_MEMORY_STAT_UNUSED) and 5 (VIR_DOMAIN_MEMORY_STAT_AVAILABLE). Is there a way to set them?

[libvirt-users] CfP 9th Workshop on Virtualization in High-Performance Cloud Computing (VHPC '14)
by VHPC 14 15 Mar '14

15 Mar '14

we apologize if you receive multiple copies of this CfP ================================================================= CALL FOR PAPERS 9th Workshop on Virtualization in High-Performance Cloud Computing (VHPC '14) held in conjunction with Euro-Par 2014, August 25-29, Porto, Portugal ================================================================= Date: August 26, 2014 Workshop URL: http://vhpc.org Paper Submission Deadline: May 30, 2014 CALL FOR PAPERS Virtualization technologies constitute a key enabling factor for flexible resource management in modern data centers, and particularly in cloud environments. Cloud providers need to dynamically manage complex infrastructures in a seamless fashion for varying workloads and hosted applications, independently of the customers deploying software or users submitting highly dynamic and heterogeneous workloads. Thanks to virtualization, we have the ability to manage vast computing and networking resources dynamically and close to the marginal cost of providing the services, which is unprecedented in the history of scientific and commercial computing. Various virtualization technologies contribute to the overall picture in different ways: machine virtualization, with its capability to enable consolidation of multiple under-utilized servers with heterogeneous software and operating systems (OSes), and its capability to live-migrate a fully operating virtual machine (VM) with a very short downtime, enables novel and dynamic ways to manage physical servers; OS-level virtualization, with its capability to isolate multiple user-space environments and to allow for their co-existence within the same OS kernel, promises to provide many of the advantages of machine virtualization with high levels of responsiveness and performance; I/O Virtualization allows physical NICs/HBAs to take traffic from multiple VMs; network virtualization, with its capability to create logical network overlays that are independent of the underlying physical topology and IP addressing, provides the fundamental ground on top of which evolved network services can be realized with an unprecedented level of dynamicity and flexibility; the increasingly adopted paradigm of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) promises to extend this flexibility to the control and data planes of network paths. These technologies have to be inter-mixed and integrated in an intelligent way, to support workloads that are increasingly demanding in terms of absolute performance, responsiveness and interactivity, and have to respect well-specified Service- Level Agreements (SLAs), as needed for industrial-grade provided services. Indeed, among emerging and increasingly interesting application domains for virtualization, we can find big-data application workloads in cloud infrastructures, interactive and real-time multimedia services in the cloud, including real-time big-data streaming platforms such as used in real-time analytics supporting nowadays a plethora of application domains. Distributed cloud infrastructures promise to offer unprecedented responsiveness levels for hosted applications, but that is only possible if the underlying virtualization technologies can overcome most of the latency impairments typical of current virtualized infrastructures (e.g., far worse tail-latency). What is more, in data communications Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is becoming a key technology enabling a shift from supplying hardware-based network functions, to providing them in a software-based and elastic way. In conjunction with (public and private) cloud technologies, NFV may be used for constructing the foundation for cost-effective network functions that can easily and seamlessly adapt to demand, still keeping their major carrier-grade characteristics in terms of QoS and reliability. The Workshop on Virtualization in High-Performance Cloud Computing (VHPC) aims to bring together researchers and industrial practitioners facing the challenges posed by virtualization in order to foster discussion, collaboration, mutual exchange of knowledge and experience, enabling research to ultimately provide novel solutions for virtualized computing systems of tomorrow. [libvirt-users] questions on clock catchup
by Jincheng Miao 13 Mar '14

13 Mar '14

In http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementsTime , we could find there are three attributes of catchup tickpolicy: limit, threshold and slew. " The catchup element has three optional attributes, each a positive integer. The attributes are threshold, slew, and limit. " The xml format likes: <clock offset='utc'> <timer name='rtc' tickpolicy='catchup'> <catchup slew='123'/> or <catchup threshold='123'/> or <catchup limit='123'/> </timer> </clock> But there is no further explanation. Does anyone know what's the meaning of these attributes ? Best wishes, Jincheng Miao

The problem is that for kvm device assignment to work properly, the device needs to be reset by libvirt after detaching it from the host driver and before passing it to kvm, and these devices you are trying to reset support neither "function level reset" nor "power management reset", so libvirt must fallback to resetting the entire bus where the device is plugged in. But of course it can't do that if the bus contains other devices that are in use by the host or by other guests. If your host OS is new enough to support vfio device assignment, I would suggest using that instead (if you update to the latest upstrem libvirt it will automatically use VFIO if it is available, otherwise you can add "<driver name='vfio'/>" to the device definition to assure that it will either use vfio or fail. You will also probably need to run "modprobe vfio" before starting the guest). The reason I suggest this is that VFIO will automatically handle resetting the assigned devices whenever necessary, compared to the old KVM device assignment, where libvirt must always reset the device because it has no better information about whether or not it is really necessary. Another thing you can try is plugging one of the cards into a different slot - if you can find a slot that is on a different bus, then libvirt will be able to reset the bus containing the card that will be assigned (since there won't be any other active devices on that same bus). > > if i (soft) remove the 2nd card via >> echo -n 1 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000\:03\:01.0/remove > i can start the guest with the 1st card assigned. > > thx for anyone looking into this. libvirt attempts to reset the > > wbr,tja.. > > > PS: > host: >> root@father:~# lspci >> 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 06) >> 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06) >> 00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family USB xHCI (rev 05) >> 00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04) >> 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection I217-V (rev 05) >> 00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family USB EHCI #2 (rev 05) >> 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port #1 (rev d5) >> 00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev d5) >> 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family USB EHCI #1 (rev 05) >> 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation H87 Express LPC Controller (rev 05) >> 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family 6-port SATA Controller 1 [AHCI mode] (rev 05) >> 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller (rev 05) >> 02:00.0 PCI bridge: ASMedia Technology Inc. Hi all, I am trying to install libvirt from source code(I have some version of libvirt installed before and I intend to overwrite it), my workflow is shown below, #!/bin/sh apt-get install gnutls-bin libgnutls-dev -y apt-get install libxml++2.6-2 libxml++2.6-dev -y apt-get install libdevmapper-dev -y apt-get install libpciaccess-dev -y apt-get install python-dev -y apt-get install libnl-dev -y if [ ! -f ./libvirt-1.1.1 ]; then wget http://libvirt.org/sources/libvirt-1.1.1.tar.gz fi tar -xzvf ./libvirt-1.1.1.tar.gz cd ./libvirt-1.1.1 ./configure --prefix=/usr --localstatedir=/var --sysconfdir=/etc make make install I have no trouble in configure, make, and make install. However, after make installfinishing, when I type virsh --version, I get the following error message: virsh: /usr/lib/libvirt.so.0: version `LIBVIRT_PRIVATE_1.1.1' not found (required by virsh) I wonder what's wrong with that? Please help, thanks! -- Best Regards, Frank
