[libvirt-users] Does virsh actually work?
by Gary Hook 03 Sep '14

03 Sep '14

I have been beating my head against a wall attempting to get virsh to migrate a simple VM from one host to another. I have two systems running Ubuntu 14.04 with libvirt 1.2.2. Yes, they are bridged. Non-shared storage. Modest guest VM that only requires 100G of disk space; there is far more available. In trying to accomplish even the simplest migration (per every page I can find from both the Fedore Project and Red Hat) I consistently get the following results: root@huey:/tmp# virsh list --all Id Name State ---------------------------------------------------- 9 e7f75b9b-9ed4-4f7e-aa86-e481ab911d6f running - 81c50b5a-24ef-47d5-88ae-16ee7f4f9537 shut off - acd06610-c919-450b-97c8-8e49b9a0d45c shut off root@huey:/tmp# virsh migrate --live --p2p e7f75b9b-9ed4-4f7e-aa86-e481ab911d6f qemu+ssh://10.10.11.204/system error: Failed to open file '/mnt/store01/virt/e7f75b9b-9ed4-4f7e-aa86-e481ab911d6f.qcow2': No such file or directory root@huey:/tmp# ls -al /mnt/store01/virt total 9140768 drwxr-xr-x 2 libvirt-qemu kvm 4096 Sep 3 10:17 . drwxr-xr-x 13 root root 4096 Aug 28 10:39 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 libvirt-qemu kvm 3271688192 Aug 29 14:39 81c50b5a-24ef-47d5-88ae-16ee7f4f9537.qcow2 -rw-r--r-- 1 libvirt-qemu kvm 2523136000 Aug 29 14:47 acd06610-c919-450b-97c8-8e49b9a0d45c.qcow2 -rw-r--r-- 1 libvirt-qemu kvm 3565486080 Sep 3 13:52 e7f75b9b-9ed4-4f7e-aa86-e481ab911d6f.qcow2 root@dewey:~ >ls -al /mnt/store01/virt total 8 drwxrwxrwx 2 libvirt-qemu kvm 4096 Sep 3 12:30 . drwxr-xr-x 13 root root 4096 Aug 29 16:36 .. root@dewey:~ > (huey is 10.10.11.203, dewey is 10.10.11.204; DNS works, but I thought to eliminate that as a source of this problem.) As can be seen, the .qcow2 files exists on the source system, and does not exist on the target system. The directory shown is where images are to be stored. There is no problem starting and stopping VMs on the systems. It is not at all clear where the failure is occurring; there is no documentation that discusses this failure, of course. I believe that I am invoking a basic migration per every page I can find in a web search. Please correct any errors. I am working as root on both systems, and use ssh to get from one system to another, no passwords, no authentication required. All works well. Any observations, or suggestions as to what configuration parameters I should check, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Gary

[libvirt-users] How to have a directory and its subdirectories as a storage pool
by Marc Haber 03 Sep '14

03 Sep '14

Hi, I would like to use btrfs subvolumes as storage place for VM images to use snapshots. Unfortunately, this does not seem to work in virt-manager at least since the "filesystem directory" storage pool type does not allow me to descend into subdirectories. Is there a trick to do this? Can I do it with virsh, or in the XML? Greetings Marc -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc Haber | "I don't trust Computers. [libvirt-users] Network reconfiguration glitch after migration
by Joaquim Barrera 03 Sep '14

03 Sep '14

Hello everyone, I have the following scenario: * 2 host machines (H1 and H2) running VMs. I execute migrations (QEMU) from one host to the other, and so on. The migrations are done in a dedicated LAN (eth1 in both hosts) while regular department LAN runs on eth0 * 1 computer (my desktop computer) also connected to this common LAN on eth0. The VMs have a Python script sending UDP packets to my desktop computer (which has the server part of the Python script), every 250 ms, to be able to mesure downtime and other stuff. Once I run a live migration from H1 to H2, I would expect the downtime to be in the order of ms, or maybe a few seconds, but it takes something like 10 to 20 seconds on average for the packets to resume arriving at my computer. One could think about the network reconfiguration delay, or other reasons, but here comes the tricky part: If I have a ping running on the destination host to the internal IP that the VM is supposed to have once the migration is done, the UDP packets resume just a few ms after the migration os done. Is like: if the VM only has outgoing connections, it takes a lot of time to resume its operation, but if it has some incoming connection, the network resumes very quick. I know it may sound wierd, but maybe there is a clear reason for this issue. Any ideas? Thank you!

[libvirt-users] libvirt ignores ip setting when creating a xen domU?
by Kim Larry 02 Sep '14

02 Sep '14

Hi, I'm currently writing a script to avoid ip conflict but I couldn't get ip address from xenstore when I create a guest using libvirt with libxl connector. With 'xl create' command, it works everything fine, but not with libvirt. So I dug into the source code, I couldn't find any code for declaring x_nic->ip field in libxlMakeNic(). Or I just created XML file the wrong way? Here is a part of domain XML: <interface type="bridge"> <mac address="00:16:3e:51:6b:19" /> <protocol family="ipv4"> <ip address="10.0.1.119" prefix="24" /> <route gateway="10.0.1.1"/> </protocol> <source bridge="virbr0" /> </interface> Hope someone can help me out. - Larry

[libvirt-users] How can I get the pid mapping relationship between the container and the native OS
by WANG Cheng D 01 Sep '14

01 Sep '14

Dear all, I want to dynamically change the CPU affinity of multiple processes/threads started in a container. Changing affinity operation is done in native OS. My problem is how to obtain the mapping relationship between the two pids owned by the process/thread. As you know, one pid is given by the container, which is different from the corresponding pid seen by the native OS. Thank you in advance. Cheng

[libvirt-users] DHCP and Secure Containers
by Gene Czarcinski 29 Aug '14

29 Aug '14

I have been "playing with" Secure Containers running a lighttpd server and have it up and running. I used Adam's process (https://www.happyassassin.net/2014/07/23/bridged-networking-for-libvirt-wit…) for getting a bridge defined when also running NetworkManager. I then created a virtual network definition: > <network> > <name>net18</name> > <uuid>8d19a05b-ac85-4e2a-88bc-5ca4cbb29a33</uuid> > <forward mode='bridge'/> > <bridge name='br0'/> > </network> This works fine when I use static addresses such as: > -N source=net18,address=192.168.18.94/24,route=192.168.18.255%192.168.18.1 but does not work when I specify using dhcp: > -N source=net18,dhcp I have reported this as a bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1133686 Since there has not been much of a reaction to the BZ report, I decided to take a look at the source code (it sure would have been nice if the SRPMS were there in the F20 fedora-virt-preview but I get the package from development/21). I see that libvirt-sandbox-init-common.c has the code for starting dhcp and also has main() along with some runtime options for -v verbose and -d debug. OK, how do I go about turning verbose and/or debug on? Any suggestions on how to debug and get dhcp to work? Is this the correct mailing list? Gene

[libvirt-users] CPU flag masking not working with xen
by Nathan March 28 Aug '14

28 Aug '14

Hi, Trying to get CPU masking working with xen and it's just stubbornly refusing to work. Spawning a VM with xm directly works fine, but every time I try with libvirt it just ends up having all the flags of the host. Looking at the xen logs, libvirt doesn't appear to be passing any cpu options to xen at all. Running centos 6.5 with the xen 4 packages (4.2.4), but I've also tried building the latest libvirt 1.2.8-r1 from source and still the same thing. I am seeing these errors out of libvirt, but not sure if they're related: 2014-08-28 17:39:02.815+0000: 22674: error : xenHypervisorDoV2Sys:1013 : Unable to issue hypervisor ioctl 3166208: Permission denied If I spawn a VM directly with XM and use libvirt to dumpxml it, or try the domxml-from-native then libvirt just drops all the CPU info. I'm pretty sure I've got the xml correct though as it passes validation with virt-xml-validate: http://pastebin.com/aBUQckhc I've tried everything I can think of and just not getting anywhere at all, can anyone point me into the right direction for what the issue might be? Thanks! - Nathan

[libvirt-users] Hook for qemu: traffic shaping
by Romain Hardouin 28 Aug '14

28 Aug '14

Hi all, If some people use generic ethernet interface and want to set traffic shaping, I made a libvirt hook for qemu: https://github.com/rhardouin/libvirt_hooks Of course, this is a workaround. I recently started to work on a fix but in the meantime this hook will do the trick and maybe it could help someone else. Feel free to fork it if you think about any improvements. [libvirt-users] Cputune causing VM to show usage as hardware interrupts
by Tyler Wilson 27 Aug '14

27 Aug '14

Hey All, What is the correct method for using cputune to use a percentage of a host core? From testing I currently have period set to 10,000 and quota set to 3,500. This gets me 35% of a used core on the host (36 3.4 2:42.20 qemu-system-x86) however when running stress inside the VM I am showing this usage in top;w %Cpu(s): 0.0 us, 0.0 sy, 0.0 ni, 0.0 id, 0.0 wa, 35.2 hi, 0.0 si, 64.8 st Is this the intended result or are my numbers incorrect for this goal? I am running libvirtd 1.2.2. Thanks for the assist.
