Hi guys, when I detach an interface from vm during boot (vm boot not finished), it always fail. I'm not sure if there is an existing bug. Hello everyone, I would like to ask a question regarding to disable UFO of virtio vNIC in my guest. I have read the document at https://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html *host* The csum, gso, tso4, tso6, ecn and ufo attributes with possible values on and off can be used to turn off host offloading options. By default, the supported offloads are enabled by QEMU. *Since 1.2.9 (QEMU only)* The mrg_rxbuf attribute can be used to control mergeable rx buffers on the host side. Possible values are on (default) and off. *Since 1.2.13 (QEMU only)* *guest* The csum, tso4, tso6, ecn and ufo attributes with possible values on and off can be used to turn off guest offloading options. Hello! According to the documentation access control drivers are not in really "good condition". There is a polkit, but it can distinguish users only according the pid. However, I have met some articles about more fine-grained control and about selinux drivers for libvirt? So, what is the status now? Should I implement something by myself if I want access based on login, are their instructions how to write these drivers or there is smth already?

Hey, Over in KubeVirt we're investigating a use case where we'd like to perform a live migration within a network namespace that does not provide libvirtd with network access. In this scenario we would like to perform a live migration by proxying the migration through a unix socket to a process in another network namespace that does have network access. That external process would live on every node in the cluster and know how to correctly route connections between libvirtds. virsh example of an attempted migration via unix socket. virsh migrate --copy-storage-all --p2p --live --xml domain.xml my-vm qemu+unix:///system?socket=destination-host-proxy-sock In this example, the src libvirtd is able to establish a connection to the destination libvirtd via the unix socket proxy. However, the migration-uri appears to require either tcp or rdma network connection. If I force the migration-uri to be a unix socket, I receive an error [1] indicating that qemu+unix is not a valid transport. Technically with qemu+kvm I believe what we're attempting should be possible (even though it is inefficient). Please correct me if I'm wrong. Is there a way to achieve this migration via unix socket functionality this using Libvirt? Hi, currently i'm following https://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Live-disk-backup-with-active-blockcommit. I 'm playing around with it and it seems to be quite nice. What i want is a daily consistent backup of my image file of the guest. I have the idea of the following procedure: - Shutdown the guest (i can live with a downtime of a few minutes, it will happen in the night). And i think it's the only way to have a real clean snapshot - create a snapshot with snapshot-create-as: snapshot-create-as guest testsn --disk-only - start the guest again. Changes will now go into the overlay, as e.g. inserts in a database - rsync the base file to a cifs server. With rsync not the complete, likely big file is transferred but just the delta - blockcommit the overlay: blockcommit guest /path/to/testsn --active --wait --verbose --pivot - delete the snapshot: snapshot-delete guest --snapshotname testsn --metadata - remove the overlay Is that ok ? How "safe" is blockcommit on a running guest ? It's possible that during the rsync, when the guest is running, some inserts are done in a database. Is it safe to copy the new sectors (i assume that's what blockcommit does) under a running database ? Or is it only safe doing blockcommit on a stopped guest ? Thanks for any answer. Bernd P.S. Hello! After some mistakes yesterday we ( me and my colleague ) think that it will be wise for libvirt to check config file existence on remote side and through error if not, before migrating, otherwise migration will fail and VM fs can be damaged, because it is sort of remove of power plug... We missed twice yesterday :-( Could you tell me is there already such option or any plans to implement this? Thank you!

Hi all, trying to edit a domain xml to enable an LSI SCSI controller I get the following error: error: unsupported configuration: This QEMU doesn't support the LSI 53C895A SCSI controller It is my understanding that the error is raised due to RedHat disabling this controller in its own qemu-kvm builds. This seems an unfortunate decision, as it makes harder to migrate from VMWare (which uses LSI SCSI and SAS adapters) to RH+KVM. Can anyone elaborate on this decision? It is possible to enable LSI controller support in RedHat 7.x? Should I open a BZ against it? I want to use short lived certificates with libvirtd to provided TLS access to the daemon. New certificates are generated on a daily basis and delivered to the host. Does libvirtd re-read TLS certificates with a reload of the service, systemctl reload libvirtd, or with a SIGHUP or is a full restart of the daemon required? --charlie

The disk under datastore is NVME SSD Intel 4500. If I set cache='none', kswaps are on idle, disk writes are pretty fast, however, with 8-NUMA configuration, writes slow down to less than 10MB/s as soon as the size of written data is roughly the same as memory size in the virtual node. iozone has 100 % CPU usage thereafter and it seems that it is traversing page lists. [libvirt-users] Which objects does dynamic_ownership apply to?

Hi, I'm playing with dynamic ownership and not all objects have their owners changed. Is dynamic_ownership and its scope documented somewhere, besides the comment in qemu.conf? And what kinds of objects are handled by dynamic ownership? While some objects seem to be handled, other objects are apparently unaffected. For instance /dev/hwrng or a USB host device keep their root owners and are inaccessible to the VM. Is that expected or do I have anything wrong? Thanks, Milan

Hi Team , I am new to virt-install , need your help pls . With below command I able to create a VM & I can see the mac address as well . virt-install --virt-type=kvm --name newclicentos --ram 6144 --vcpus=2 --import --network=bridge=br0,model=virtio --graphics vnc --disk path=centos7.0.qcow2,size=60,bus=virtio,format=qcow2 --os-variant centos7.0 --mac=00:00:00:00:01:01 With below command I am trying to assign an IP address , however it throws error . I dont want to give --location as I already have the vm build in centos7.0.qcow2 Is there a was I can assign static IP to my VM ? Hi everyone, Currently I boot my guest through VGA as LABEL vga KERNEL vmlinuz APPEND initrd=initrd console=tty0 rootfstype=ramfs If I boot through VGA tty0, is there any way to modify libvirt xml config that when a user type command "reboot" in VGA console, I can log all messages types from user in "console", could you please help? I have a very strange issue that has plagued our KVM-based hypervisor infrastructure. Environment: - All EL7-based libvirt releases since EL7.0 - Fully patched EL7-based KVM guest on a fully patched EL7-based KVM host. - Secondary disk attached via 'virsh attach-device guest /vm/guest-with-secondary-disk-01/disk2.xml --persistent' (note --persistent flag here) Problem Description: - Guest becomes unresponsive/hangs due to issue on guest. Typically the scenario is that PID1 hangs or goes into a bad state due to a misbehaving application. - Before virsh destroy, 'virsh dumpxml guest | grep vd[ab]' returns the expected filesystems. - Guest is destroyed from the hypervisor via 'virsh destroy guest'. - With guest still powered off, 'virsh dumpxml guest | grep vd[ab]' only shows 'vda'. 'vdb' now unattached. - To fix, requires re-run of 'virsh attach-device guest guest-with-secondary-disk-01/disk2.xml --persistent' Expected Behavior: - 'virsh destroy guest' does not drop the secondary disk attached to the guest if the node is in a hung state. Other notes: - If guest is not in a hung state, 'virsh destroy' does not drop the secondary disk. - 'virsh reset guest' does not exhibit the same behavior when guest is hung - vdb remains attached. - No logs produced in /var/log/libvirt indicating an issue, even with debug logging enabled. Is there any obvious I'm missing? Is this expected behavior? [libvirt-users] Running libvirtd outside of a shell results in qemu defunct processes

Hi, In KubeVirt we are right now starting libvirt via a wrapper shell script. I want to remove that wrapper and directly start libvirtd from our golang code. This means that our golang code is PID 1 in the container and we start libvirtd as a fork from there. When I did this, strange things started to happen. Libvirt was still able to start and manage qemu processes, but stopping the qemu processes stopped working. I can see that all qemu processes, the ones with VMs and the ones used by libvirt to do some host capability detection, stay in the process table as zombies: qemu 54 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? If I start in the container pid namespace the golang wrapper directly, or use "exec" from the bash script, things stop working. Hi! I have been plaing arround with libvirt and I've ran into a problem that I don't seem to able to fix, sharing the clipboard. Both my host and my guest are running Arch Linux. I have properly installed, enabled and started spice-vdagent on both machines and I don't see any error in the logs. Am I doing anything wrong? Do I need to have anything else in consideration? Hi list, suppose I have an immutable (ie: due to a read-only snapshot) backing file. After creating an overlay file with "qemu-img create -f qcow2 -o backing_file=/path/to/immutable/file.img current.qcow2", libvirt refuse to start the virtual machine and exits with an error stating "Could not open backing file /path/to/immutable/file.img: Permission denied". From my understanding, libvirtd is trying to change the owner/permissions/selinux context of the backing file but, being it immutable, fails to start the VM. Is that the expected behavior? Hello, According to the docs, vcpupin will use either cgroups or sched_setaffinity to pin vcpu threads to cpus. How is this decision made? I observe differences even on different hosts featuring the same version of libvirtd (1.3.1): on one host vcpupin affects cpuset.cpus (cgroup), and on the other it affects vcpu threads affinity (observed through taskset). Hi Everyone, I'd like to ask a question about libvirt xml config. I am using kvm with tls certification. For some reason I need to specify a unique certificate file for every instance, so my kvm command would be like: /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm -spice port=5900,tls-port=5901,addr=0.0.0.0,disable-ticketing,x509-dir=/openstack/etc/pki/libvirt-spice the argument x509-dir=/openstack/etc/pki/libvirt-spice is specified in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf. It's a global argument. Can I specify it from xml? I searched the xml doc but unable to find useful infomation. BR Don

People of the interwebs please help me! I am so close, but can't quite get it. I think due to my limited understanding of iptables. Here's what’s up: I'm trying to port forward from my host to a VM on usermode NAT with libvirt. Using the hook script provided on the wiki, it doesn't work (connection refused) but it if give the command "sudo iptables -t nat -D POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE" the port forwarding works, but name resolution on my host breaks. I think maybe I need to be more specific in the Masquerade command, but I have no idea what to do.
