I just ran into an issue where I had about 30 guests get duplicate mac addresses assigned. These were scattered across 30 different machines. Some debugging revealed that: 1) All the host machines were restarted within a couple seconds of each other 2) All the host machines had fairly similar libvirtd pids (within ~100 PIDs of each other) 3) Libvirt seeds the RNG using 'time(NULL) ^ getpid()' This perfectly explains why I saw so many duplicate mac addresses. Why is the RNG seed such a predictable value? Surely there has to be a better source of a random seed then the timestamp and the pid? The PID seems to me to be a very bad source of any randomness. I just ran a test across 60 of our hosts. 43 of them shared their PID with at least one other machine.

Hello, I have two servers where I can push VMs from one to the other by issuing the command virsh migrate --live --persistent --copy-storage-all --verbose \ test6 qemu+ssh://kvmhost2/system on kvmhost1. I can get the VM back by issuing the equivalent command on kvmhost2: virsh migrate --live --persistent --copy-storage-all --verbose \ test6 qemu+ssh://kvmhost1/system After an update (on behalf of the glibc bug) it only works for some VMs and fails for others. The error message is unhelpful: virsh --debug 4 migrate --live --persistent --copy-storage-all --verbose \ vmware-mgmt qemu+ssh://kvmhost1/system error: internal error: info migration reply was missing return status Is there a way to get a more helpful error message? migrating VMs only works for a very limited subset of the VMs on the system in the direction kvmhost2 --> kvmhost2 Stopping the VMs, copying them over to kvmhost1 and restarting still works, and I can even migrate them back. How do I debug this problem? One possible way would be to stop all VMs on kvmhost2, manually copy them to kvmhost1 and start them and afterwards reinstall all packages (or the whole Server if that doesn't help) But that would be a workaround, and I still would not know what the problem is. The system is CentOS 7.2 now and was CentOS 7.1 before the upgrade, with the qemu-kvm-rhev repo added for qemu. [libvirt-users] Networking issues with lxc containers in AWS EC2

I've created an EC2 AMI for AWS that essentially represents a CentOS 7 "hypervisor" image. I deploy instances of these in AWS and create an number of libvirt based lxc containers on each of these instances. The containers run fine within a single host and have no problem communicating with themselves as well as with their host, and vice versa. However, containers hosted in one EC2 instance cannot communicate with containers hosted in another EC2 instance. We've tried various tweaks with our Amazon VPC but have been unable to find a way to solve this networking issue. If I use something like VMware or KVM and create VMs using this same hypervisor image, the containers running under these VMs can communicate with with each other, even across different hosts. My real question is has anyone tried deploying EC2 images that host containers and have figured out how to successfully communicate between containers on different hosts? Peter

Has anyone seen this issue? We're running containers under CentOS 7.2 and some of these containers are reporting incorrect memory allocation in /proc/meminfo. The output below comes from a system with 32G of memory and 84GB of swap. [libvirt-users] uefi built from tiancore via edk2 can't persist boot changes

Apologies if this has been gone over, but I believe I have checked the intertubes more than a bit..... I am using libvirt and have vms booting under an OVMF.fd to use an efi firmware. I can create vms, linux ubuntu, and they will boot up. However, everytime I reboot am I dropped into the default efi shell provide by the tianocore build. Then I must walk the FS to the booting efi app and run, in this case grubx64.efi, to actually finish booting the host. I had tried adding boot entries with efibootmgr within the OS and also bcfg with the efi shell. I get no errors when adding an entry, and the new entry shows up and I can manipulate the entry i.e. set it to next boot and the like. Soon as I reboot I get dumped back to efi shell. Am I missing something? Are the var changes not being stored? Is there someplace to look for an error perhaps? I also can use the same efi bootloader under libvirt to boot a hybrid iso. location of the efi application on the hybrid iso is /EFI/boot/bootx64.efi. Drops me right into my grub menu, after falling thru from EFI FLOPPY1 and EFI FLOPPY2 to EFI DVD So since that was/is working, tried adding that to my efi partition so it has /EFI/boot/bootx64.efi. The thinking being that since I can't add an entry, I will setup for the "known" efi boot path. I ran into an odd problem today. I wanted to share it here in the hopes of maybe saving someone else some lost time. When you run libvirtd as an unprivileged user (e.g., if you target qemu:///session from a non-root account), then libvirt will open a unix domain socket in one of two places: - If XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is defined, then inside $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/libvirt/libvirt-sock - If XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is *not* defined, then inside $HOME/.cache/libvirt/libvirt-sock With a CentOS 7 system, at least, if you ssh directly into an account, XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is set. But! If you `su -` to the account from root, e.g: # su - stack Then XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is *not* set. The problem is a little subtle, because most operations you will perform will work just fine in both cases: you can query for defined but not active guests, storagep pools, volumes, and so forth without a problem and you'll get the same answer. The problem crops up when you start a guest, which results in a persistent libvirtd process. Now, depending on how you got to your account, you will either (a) talk to the persistent process, and you'll be able to see the running guests, or (b) you'll end up spawning a new ephemeral libvirtd process listening in the *other* location, and you won't see anything, and you will wonder why there is a qemu process running for your guest but it's not showing up in "virsh list" and what the heck is going on here. I don't know if there's a good solution to this, but the failure mode is really non-obvious. Hello I use lock_manager with libvirt 1.3 and I would like to know how is exactly calculate the hash SHA256. I would create a table to retreive the name with the hash in case of crash to release manualy the lock. I do an sha256 hash from /var/lib/libvirt/images/lock/MyVM.img but I don't get the same hash code form virtlockd ? Any Ideas ? [libvirt-users] libvirt hooks deadlocks and auto-restarting a stopped guest

All, Short version: I want to auto-restart a particular guest any time it shuts down. libvirt hooks can't call 'virsh start foo'. What is a good/simple way to do this? Long version: I have what is probably an unusual set of requirements. To summarize briefly: I have an OS image that runs 3rd party binaries that I can't modify. These binaries occasionally get they system into a state that can not be resolved by restarting the software. We can detect the error state, but not prevent it or fix either the OS or the software. (The joys of closed-source software... sigh.) For a long time this has been running on real hardware, and a small monitor was written that will initiate a reboot of the system when it gets in that state. I ALSO use a custom qemu command line option: -snapshot so that I throw away all changes each time the system shuts down. These are all part of a compute cluster and no non-transient data is ever on these systems. What I'm trying to do: use snapshots AND on every OS boot, start fresh from the base image. It works if I give two custom options to qemu-kvm (-snapshot -no-reboot). Everytime I shut the system down, and then start it, I get back to the starting image. But if the error happens, I either shut down (with the -no-reboot option) and stay down, or I do a warm-boot and dont discard all filesystem changes. So this looked to me like a place to use libvirt hooks (Centos 7, I had to create /etc/libvirt/hooks and restart the libvirtd service). I made a qemu hook that watches for this dom name to get a release event so that I could auto-restart it. Of course you probably already know what I didn't - you can't call 'virsh start' safely from a libvirt hook. So, how can I make libvirt auto restart a dom? a libvirt hook doesn't seem to be the way. Several options occur: I might make the hook spawn something in the background that sleeps 5 seconds and then does a virsh start - presumably some time after the hook script exits. This seems somewhat problematic, and not reliable. I could make a cron-job that checks every minute and just restarts it. I'd like the restart to be faster than an average of 30 seconds though. I could replace the <emulator>/.....</emulator> in the dom definition with a script that wraps the real emulator in a loop, maybe... I could write an libvirt api consuming application that watches for the right events (reboot and shutdown) and then does the right thing. Other ideas? Fred Clift

But when VMs crash abnormaly or freeze ( see the sreenshot I missed to attach it yesterday ) there is no way to unlease or remove the locks, they are presents even if I kill the process qemu and I can't restart the VM because the lock is still here. So I try now lock-manager, but do you know exactly how the lock is calculate . In case of problem I want to be able to retrieve the lock coupled with the VM. I have seen that it is a hash SHA256 of the path and the name, but if a try to do by the hand a sha256 of the complete path of the VM I don't have the correct value ( the same value as lock_manager ). Hello I changed my hypervisors ( 8) from centos 6.0 to fedora 23 and I added locks to prevent starting VM on multiple nodes, and it's work well. Since I changed the OS some old VMs ( centos 5.x and 6.x ) with very old kernel seem very instable and crash very often ( after one or two days ). Before they never have these problems. I saw, perhaps the reason is the dev is too slow ??? see screenshot joined A major problem with these crashs is that the VMs couldn't be destroyed by the virsh command, the qemu process is notified as defunct by the ps command. with virsh destroy VM I often get Failed to terminate process xxx with SIGTERM: Device or resource busy and the VM is still in the list If I try to remove all the file associated with the VM in /var/run or /var/lib....channel .. It doesn't give results The VM is still running as defunct and after a libvirt restart , libvirt and virsh command are pending. With sanlock it's a problem because the is never release and it's impossible to restart the VM. I can't remove the VM in the sanlock list. I tried kill commands, rm ... but without a real success. Hey Mike, did you ever have any success figuring out this issue? I am having the same problem (on CentOS 7) with a custom data acquisition PCI card. It seems like the solution might have something to do with delaying the start of libvirtd in systemd until the PCI card (or vfio?) is ready, but I don’t know how to do that. Can anyone else offer assistance? Hi. I'd like to use Openvswitch while running libvirt as an unprivileged user (qemu:///session). As expected, system session works just fine with OVS. When I try to start the domain from user session, with the relevant network part of the domain xml edited to use openvswitch, like this --- <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='52:54:00:4a:ef:bb'/> <source bridge='ovs-br'/> <virtualport type='openvswitch'> <parameters interfaceid='33ec3d9d-a92a-468e-aa48-6c31f7882d6f'/> </virtualport> <target dev='veth0-ovs'/> <model type='virtio'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x07' function='0x0'/> </interface> --- I get this error: --- start freebsd-10.3 error: Failed to start domain freebsd-10.3 error: internal error: /usr/lib/qemu/qemu-bridge-helper --use-vnet --br=ovs-br --fd=19: failed to communicate with bridge helper: Transport endpoint is not connected stderr=failed to add interface `tap0' to bridge `ovs-br': Operation not supported --- Now, if I understand correctly, this is Qemu, not libvirt error? Libvirt prepares the network, passes it to qemu-bridge-helper, which has no idea what to do with it, since it's not the regular bridge, and barfs? The reason I ask is because I saw calls to ovs-vsctl in the logs when I did the same thing using qemu:///system. My question (finally): if I reconfigure OVS to not run as root:root, but as ovs:ovs, and add the user to that group, will libvirt/virsh automagically figure out that the user has permissions to run ovs-whatever and write permission to /var/run/openvswitch/db.sock, so there is no need for qemu-bridge-helper, and just set up the network, just like when system sesion is used, or is using qemu-bridge-helper the only option available for non-root users ? If it is, due to some Linux constraints, I'll curse a bit and migrate the domains :) And, before I forget, I am using libvirt and qemu built from git master, and openvswitch-2.5.0 Pedja

In the tripleo-quickstart project, we're making use of libvirt's unprivileged mode. When run as a non-root user using a qemu:///session uri, libvirt creates files and sockets in subdirectories of $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR (aka /run/user/<uid>). We are seeing situations in which: - A "stack" user is created - Some libvirt resources (a storage pool) are provisioned for that user - The "stack" user is deleted (we first kill off any processes owned by the stack user, then delete the user via ansible which ultimately calls "userdel -r stack"). - The corresponding /run/user/<uid> directory is *not* deleted - A new "stack" user is created, and the stale storage pool from the previous invocation exists in an indeterminate state such at attempts to undefine it fail with: storage pool the_pool exists but directory /home/stack/pool is missing I can work around the problem like this: virsh pool-dumpxml the_pool | virsh pool-define /dev/stdin This ensures that a subsequent pool-undefine operation can successfully delete the pool. I think there are two problems here. Once is clearly a system problem; the /run/user directory should be deleted when the user account is deleted, period. The other problem seems like a libvirt problem: faced with a storage pool in this state, libvirt should permit the pool to be undefined anyway. It's possible this is already fixed in later releases of libvirt, but this is on CentOS 7, so we're stuck with libvirt-1.2.17-13.el7_2.3.x86_64 for now. I'm curious if anyone has seen this behavior or knows whether or not it has been corrected in later releases. Hello I installed libvirt 1.3.3 for managing a Hyper-V 2012 R2 Server. [libvirt-users] changing clock on host temporarily blocks guest OS operation

I have the following running on my system: - one linux host running libvirt 1.2.20 - two Linux guestOS VMs running When I change the clock on the host, the VMs stop responding: The VNC connection stops working, the console connection to the VMs does not work, ping stops reponding, libvirt commands temporarily stop working (after issuing the command, the system just hangs). I get control back after 5 min or so, but I have to restart the VMs for everything to work again. Any ideas what's causing this? Is this a know bug? Is there a fix for it? Hello guys, Recently I have switched to use LVM cache feature on logical volume /dev/hdd/windata1 to improve it performace using 32GB partition from SSD disk. When I will manually start virtual machine afterwards, everything works OK : [root@brutus-coreos ~]# virsh start winos1 Domain winos1 started I have tried to remove LVM cache from /dev/hdd/windata1 and afterward autostart works! So it must be LVM cache related. Can you please help me to solve this ?
