I just ran into an issue where I had about 30 guests get duplicate mac addresses assigned. These were scattered across 30 different machines. Some debugging revealed that: 1) All the host machines were restarted within a couple seconds of each other 2) All the host machines had fairly similar libvirtd pids (within ~100 PIDs of each other) 3) Libvirt seeds the RNG using 'time(NULL) ^ getpid()' This perfectly explains why I saw so many duplicate mac addresses. Why is the RNG seed such a predictable value? Surely there has to be a better source of a random seed then the timestamp and the pid? The PID seems to me to be a very bad source of any randomness. I just ran a test across 60 of our hosts. 43 of them shared their PID with at least one other machine.

I've been having issues with KVM lately where I sometimes put my host into sleep while a guest is still running, which prevents it from waking up properly. This is somewhat expected due to my setup, but I have mistakenly done this more than once and could use a workaround to stop this from happening. So I've been trying to setup a libvirt hook to fork an instance of systemd-inhibit when the start hook is called and keep it running until the shutdown hook is called. This seems to work well when I run the hook script in a normal bash shell, but running it through libvirt simply blocks the starting process until systemd-inhibit quits. [libvirt-users] pci-assign fails with read error on config-space file

Hey, i am running an unusual setup where i assign pci devices behind the back of libvirt. I have two options to do that: 1. a wrapper script for qemu that takes care of suid-root and appends arguments for pci-assign 2. virsh qemu-monitor-command ... 'device_add pci-assign...' I know i should probably not be doing this, it is a workaround to introduce fine-grained pci-assignment in an openstack setup, where vendor and device id are not enough to pick the right device for a vm. In both cases qemu will crash with the following output: > qemu: hardware error: pci read failed, ret = 0 errno = 22 followed by the usual machine state dump. With strace i found it to be a failing read on the config space file of my device. /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:xx:xx.x/config A few reads out of that file succeeded, as well as accesses on vendor etc. Manually launching a qemu with the pci-assign works without a problem, so i "blame" libvirt and the cgroup environment the qemu ends up in. So i put a bash into the exact same cgroup setup - next to a running qemu, expecting a dd or hexdump on the config-space file to fail. But from that bash i can read the file without a problem. Has anyone seen that problem before? Right now i do not know what i am missing, maybe qemu is hitting some limits configured for the cgroups or whatever. I can not use pci-assign from libvirt, but if i did would it configure cgroups in a different way or relax some limits? What would be a good next step to debug that? Right now i am looking at kernel event traces, but the machine is pretty big and so is the trace. That assignment used to work and i do not know how it broke, i have tried combinations of several kernels, versions of libvirt and qemu. (kernel 3.18 and 4.4, libvirt 1.3.2 and 2.0.0, and qemu 2.2.1 and 2.7) All combinations show the same problem, even the ones that work on other machines. So when it comes to software versions the problem could well be caused by a software update of another component, that i got with the package manager and did not compile myself. It is a debian 8.6 with all recent updates installed. My guess would be that systemd could have an influence on cgroups or limits causing such a problem. regards, Henning

hi all I have in my centos 7 this: crw-------. 1 root root 10, 183 Oct 11 21:28 /dev/hwrng and VM fails, complains like this: virsh # start volatile-work6 error: Failed to start domain volatile-work6 error: internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor: 2016-10-19T09:42:05.988142Z qemu-kvm: -object rng-random,id=objrng0,filename=/dev/hwrng: Could not open '/dev/hwrng': Permission denied which reads logical. Now - is this normal that hwrng is created with these permissions? And if yes then how to pass-through it to the VMs? How to aid VMs with hardware random numbers generator? many thanks. L

[libvirt-users] How do you set real time bandwidth for a container?

When I create a VM using libvirt, the VM comes up the path /sys/fs/cgroup/cpu/cpu.rt_runtime_us set to something like 1000000. When I create a container however, the path /sys/fs/cgroup/cpu/cpu.rt_runtime_us is 0. This prevents my containers from being able to run any real time applications. I have to explicitly echo a value into this field in order to give the container some real time bandwidth and allow it to run real time processes. Is it possible to define this in a container's XML config? Or is there another method I should be using to enable real time capability in a container? Peter

Hello, I am currently working on Redhat 6 - Kernel 2.6.32-358.el6.x86_64. It has by default libvirt 0.10.2. I wanted version 1.2.7. So I downloaded this and libvirt-1.2.7.tar.gz and I followed the following steps: 1. ./configure (with its default settings) 2. make 3. make install Currently, the installation is in: /usr/local and the source tree is in /export/home/libvirt. I stopped the previously installed daemon so that the new one takes effect. I launched the daemon from /export/home/libvirt/daemon/libvirtd -d. However every time I launch the C++ code, this message appears: libvir: XML-RPC error : Failed to connect socket to '/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock': No such file or directory Failed to open connection to qemu:///system My questions are: 1. How can I launch the daemon from the source tree? It does not behave as it should when it is launched from /etc/init.d 2. How can any application e.g. virt-manager look at the new paths of the newly installed libvirt? 3. How can I get libvirt to work from the source tree as if it was originally installed in Redhat? Escpecially how to improve isolation of VMs: - secure time sync (with or without ntpd?) - random number generation - running VMs as different host OS users I do not need general OS hardening advice. Hi, I want to use Invariant TSC with qemu, and to do that qemu must get the following args: "-cpu host,migratable=no,+invtsc". invtsc works only if migratable=no is passed too. The "+invtsc" part is sucessfully handled by using <feature name="invtsc"/> inside domain's XML, however I don't how/where to put the "migratable=no" there. Is there an elegant way to pass "migratable=no" to qemu via domain's XML without using <qemu:arg/> tags?

[libvirt-users] Libvirt newer than 2.1.0 doesnt start up

Hi all, I have some problems with libvirt >2.1.0 (so 2.2.0 and 2.3.0): I have a working environment using libvirt 2.1.0 with 1 domain (called "mail") and one network (called "default6"), both are autostarted. I have no problems with this environment using libvirt 2.1.0, everything works great. But after (testwise) updating to libvirt 2.2.0 or 2.3.0, libvirt doesn't start up anymore. Some investigations showed that apparently my "default6" network is the problem. Libvirt is starting correctly after disabling all autostarts. When I then virsh' into the system daemon and type "net-start default6", then nothing happens and that command just hangs infinitely. Further information, relevant log entries and e.g. the used default6.xml configuration file can be found here, as I first thought it would be a configuration error from my side: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1653221 Do you maybe have an idea what could be going on? I'm using libvirt in desktop environment. Single host machine, pair of users, a few guest machines. The first thought was that unix socket restricted to specific group is just enough for authentication. But virsh has the power like sudo: you could define pool on real device and write anything on it. So I decided to authenticate with password for each virsh use. After installation I get all sorts of kernel panics and errors about services not being able to start. So I tried the same thing on ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS which installed qemu-kvm 2.0.0 and libvirt 1.2.2 Same config xml, but this time it worked better -I was not getting the kernel panics. The OS I'm installing does not support IDE disks, it needs a virtio disk. The obvious solution here would be to try and get a newer version of qemu, but since we're talking about a custom built Linux I'd have to add the package manually and compile from source...which cakes a long time to do. So before attempting that....just wondering....is there a better way? Anything I can try? Hello, In my C++ code, I generate my own domain XML file and I use virDomainCreateXML or virDomainDefineXML to launch my qemu VM. However, when I get to check which commands are sent to the qemu commandline, I find that libvirt has added so many extra parameters to the ones I have already set. How can I prevent libvirt from adding any extra parameters to the ones I originally defined in the domain XML? Help will be highly appreciated. Thanks

Hi, I have a Windows 7 SP1 Pro 64-bit VM which works fine on libvirt 2.3.0 and Qemu 2.7.0. If I enable HyperV features (https://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementsFeatures) like "relaxed", "spinlocks" etc - VM doesn't boot. "Starting Windows" text appears for ~2 seconds (no flying dots, no logo) and then it just goes to black screen. If I switch HyperV features back off, it boots normally again. Running VM with debuggging enabled (virsh --log win7_hyperv.log --debug 1 start win7) doesn't produce any errors in the log. There are no logs for that attempted boot in the guest either - apparently it doesn't get to the point when Windows starts logging. [libvirt-users] Problems connecting to the libvirtd server

Hello everyone I do not know if it is correct address this mailing lists but I can not use libvirt. I run compile libvirt version 2.2.0 into environment lfs stable with qemu 2.7.0 and have not had any problems. The program when it starts not report any errors in the log, with activated debug level file. Only when you try to connect with the following command virsh -c qemu:///system remains hung without reporting any error either in the logs that screen. The command virsh -c test:///default list instead concludes on a regular basis. I attach the file libvirt.log and libvirt.conf Thank you Stefano Ricci

[libvirt-users] Dealing with swappiness on host systems

Hi, I'm looking for a way to prevent qemu processes on a libvirt host to use swap unless there is no physical memory free but apparently this is not as easy as I'd hoped it would be. This is on a CentOS 7 system. At first I tried setting /proc/sys/vm/swappiness to 1 (apparently setting it to 0 now means even the OOM killer takes precedence over swapping: https://www.percona.com/blog/2014/04/28/oom-relation-vm-swappiness0-new-ker… ). After doing this I could still see the used swap increase for a guest even though there were 28G of memory used only as page-cache on the host. Taking another look at it I notices that swappiness can now apparently be controlled on a per-process basis as well by means of using the files under /sys/fs/cgroup/memory/machine.slice however I found no good documentation describing which of the values takes precedence and whether these values can be modified on the fly the same way the files under /proc can. Has anyone pointers to documentation that explains how all of this works? More specifically: Which of these paths take precedence for a running process: /proc/sys/vm/swappiness /sys/fs/cgroup/memory/machine.slice/memory.swappiness /sys/fs/cgroup/memory/machine.slice/<guest-id>/memory.swappiness Can any/all of these values be modified on the fly and if not is there another way to tell qemu to prefer physical memory to swap and only use swap when no physical memory is available? [libvirt-users] Permission denied for volume create in raw format

Hi, I'm facing similar problem to described here: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvirt-users/2016-February/msg00033.html I got Libvirt pool mounted over netfs and I'm trying to create new volume, with pool.createXML. When format is qcow2, everything works fine. Unfortunately, for raw images libvirt raises error Permission denied. Whole pool is owned by root. Libvirt starts as root user too. I've tried to change pool's permissions to 777 on filesystem, but i get the same error, only for RAW images. Volume's xml looks like: <volume> <name>{{user.id}}_{{image.id}}</name> <source> </source> <capacity unit='bytes'>{{image.size}}</capacity> <target> <format type='{{ image.format }}'/> <permissions> <mode>660</mode> </permissions> </target> </volume> I've tried to create it without defining permissions, but it's the same. Problem exists in Ubuntu Server 16.04 (libvirt from repo) and Raspbian (libvirt in version 1.2.9). Do you know if it is possible solve this problem with this version of libvirt? -- Maciej Nabożny cloudover.io
