I just ran into an issue where I had about 30 guests get duplicate mac addresses assigned. These were scattered across 30 different machines. Some debugging revealed that: 1) All the host machines were restarted within a couple seconds of each other 2) All the host machines had fairly similar libvirtd pids (within ~100 PIDs of each other) 3) Libvirt seeds the RNG using 'time(NULL) ^ getpid()' This perfectly explains why I saw so many duplicate mac addresses. Why is the RNG seed such a predictable value? Surely there has to be a better source of a random seed then the timestamp and the pid? The PID seems to me to be a very bad source of any randomness. I just ran a test across 60 of our hosts. 43 of them shared their PID with at least one other machine.

Greetings, I am dumping a guest VM memory for inspection using the command "virDomainCoreDumpWithFormat" and the created files appear to belong to root (both user and group). I have searched around but didn't find any answer. Is there a way to instruct QEMU to create those files under a different user? Thank you.

Hello! I'd like to set up my first lxc container using libvirt. I'd like to start using the simplest configuration and next add things I need. Hello all, So I am trying to get a qemu guest to use a custom patched seabios image rather than the default /usr/share/qemu/bios.bin I have tried changing the domain config file to include either: <os> --SNIP-- <loader readonly='yes' type='rom'>/home/telemin/qemu/seabios_patched.bin</loader> </os> OR domain type='kvm' xmlns:qemu='http://libvirt.org/schemas/domain/qemu/1.0' --SNIP-- <qemu:commandline> <qemu:arg value='-smbios'/> <qemu:arg value='file=/home/telemin/qemu/seabios_patched.bin'/> </qemu:commandline> --SNIP-- And neither of these approaches result in the new seabios_patched.bin being used. Hello, I'm trying to adopt the Ruby event example from here https://www.libvirt.org/ruby/examples/event_test.rb to use EventMachine (a library for writing event driven programs). I have attached my attempt, which appears subscribe to events but never executes the callbacks I provide. I know this because when I reset domains (virsh reset VM) I see messages appear from the Handlers::notify_readable(), which should then invoke Libvirt::event_invoke_handle_callback() - but the output from the callbacks never appears. Typical output from the program looks like: add_handle fd=11 events=1 add_timer interval=-1 :notify_readable id=0 fd=11 events=1 update_timer id=0 interval=0 :notify_readable id=0 fd=11 events=1 :notify_readable id=0 fd=11 events=1 ... When I enabled debugging by setting LIBVIRT_DEBUG to 1 the output from libvirt appears to be the same as event_test.rb (excluding memory addresses). Can anyone see where I'm going wrong? I was getting vCPU use time outside of guest with libvirt-python API, and them calculate utilization with (cpuTime2 - cpuTime1) / (t2 - t1). Hi, I am doing some domain resource monitoring work. I use cat /dev/urandom | md5sum to simulate vCPU load and write a script to calculate vCPU utilization. It seems all good at the beginning. Hello. I'm try to understand, why in case of 20 workers libvirt fully locked when runs qemu hook (when domain starts) virsh list freezes. As i understand in case of using more workers it utilized to run hooks too, but as i see in pstree only main libvirt process executes hook. Dell Customer Communication Hi everyone, I am trying to do a virsh using TLS Certificate. I am getting an error that "error: authentication failed: Failed to verify peer's certificate" I am following the steps mentioned in the http://wiki.libvirt.org/page/TLSSetup I have generated CA Certificate, client certificate and server certificate and placed them as mentioned in above site. After that when I am trying to do a virsh it is failing. [libvirt-users] Migrate KVM linux based VM to microsoft Hyper-v

Hi, I am searching around this topic but didn't get any suitable link, can you guys please help with this. i have my linux based VM as .img which is built on top of VirtIO protocol and runs fine on KVM or qemu. i am trying to port the same on the Microsoft Hyper-V but it is not working. I get blank screen with no other actions, tried the same on virtual box also but result is same. i have converted the vm.img format to .vhd, .vhdx, .vmdk , .vdi using different tools like qemu-img , and other windows based tools. but no success. I am running hyper-v on windows 10. My existing linux based VM setup works on qemu both in Centos and windows, but other than that its not working on any other hyper visor. i am not sure whether i need to update My VM's drivers to support hyper-V. [libvirt-users] Hot Cloning - clone running Virtual Machines

Greetings, I am running a test automation service which makes use of QEMU/KVM. As the tests run for few minutes, the time spent booting the OS (Windows) is quite a waste of resources so I decided to play a bit around the idea of hot cloning running VMs. Following an old discussion I found, I proceeded with saving the VM state through virsh save, edit its XML file with virsh save-image-edit and restore it through virsh restore. The problem comes when I try to change some specific fields in the XML. As I run several instances on the same server, I need to provide different names and UUIDs to avoid collisions. Unfortunately, libvirt forbids this operation issuing the following error message: error: unsupported configuration: Target domain uuid 7c85e288-88fe-43d2-8b9c-89af4c83c10a does not match source 62f28517-8601-4d2e-942c-a20d087f9f4a Same thing applies with the name field. Is this a limitation of the API or it is a designed protection mechanism? Would it be possible to overcome this limit? Thank you.

I finally figured out my VNC configuration, so I can now run virt-manager to inspect and manipulate my VM. I initially created the VM with "virt-install", but I haven't been able to see the console or do anything with it. When I ran virt-manager, I tried to configure the vcpus (1->4) and change the boot order (cdrom, then disk, as I created the VM with an ISO). When I made these changes, virt-manager said they would take effect on the next restart of the VM. So, then I tried to restart the VM from virt-manager. The "Run" button is disabled, so I assume that means it detects that the VM is running. I've tried clicking "Shut Down" and selecting "Reboot" from the dropdown, but neither of those seem to do anything. I've tried to view the console window, but I've only ever seen a black screen there. I believe some people mentioned that I should try sshing to the VM. I would do that if I could find an IP address or hostname that appears to correspond to this VM. The obvious, using the VM name, didn't work. I'm not sure what to do here.

[libvirt-users] So why does "destroy" not actually destroy?

I thought it odd that if I have a running VM and I do "virsh destroy" it results in a VM that is "shut off". To ACTUALLY destroy a VM, you have to follow that with "undefine". Could someone elaborate on how we ended up with these slightly confusing semantics?

I need to enable virtual machine extensions, like as described at http://www.server-world.info/en/note?os=Ubuntu_14.04&p=kvm&f=8 . I could do this in virsh, but I'd like to know if it's possible to do in virt-manager. I don't see an obvious way to do that.

I'm having trouble booting a VM from an ISO, but my problems may not be virtualization issues, just general confusion. I'm running virt-manager on Ubuntu, but I need to boot a VM with an ISO that is based on CentOS. Is that possible? How do I define the VM in virt-manager to boot from an ISO? I initially created the VM with virt-install, but I started over with virt-manager, and now I'm not sure how to specify the ISO to boot from.

Greetings all, I am looking for a solution to use IPMI (BMC) in with LibVirt (Virt-Manager). Actually there is a Customer behind this request as well. Trying to be short: We are looking for a Solution in OpenStack Environment. Customer wants to have the entire environment running in Virt-Manager (probably for a P.O.C or tests purposes). So here is what he is trying to do: http://red.ht/1HfNn9r This template you can find in the Red Hat's OpenStack Install Guide. So far so good. But OpenStack works with High Availability and in some moment of the procedure you have to create an IPMI (BMC) interface in order to Fence the HA Nodes and Controllers. (Just for curiosity in this first moment customer is setting the Nodes - Hypervisors - as Nested KVM - so he can use the VM as an Hypervisor as well). That said the 3 VMs which are the controller, and also the 2 nodes, should have an IPMI Interface. Is it possible to have it in KVM? I mean, seems that in SeaBIOS we already have this support: http://www.seabios.org/pipermail/seabios/2012-August/004405.html Also I found a Red Hat BugZilla regarding this request: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=815136 . but it seems to be "abandoned" since the beginning. So the point is: - Is it possible to have a NIC or a Device emulating an IPMI (BMC) interface? - If yes, how can we export it to the VM? Maybe we can do a pass-trough if the hardware is available. But Lets think in a Notebook or a Desktop, for instance (we are working with a POC, remember?) and maybe the IPMI Interface could not be available or oesn't exist. I thought if it was possible to have some kind of IPMI NIC emulated and also an "brdge" and then an additional virtual network for this bridge.
