Hi,all,i am using libvirt to manage my vm,in these days i am testing the libvirt snapshot ,but meet some problem: the snapshot was created from this command: snapshot-create-as win7 --disk-only --diskspec vda,snapshot=external --diskspec hda,snapshot=no but when i tried to revert from the snapshot which created from the above command ,i got error below: virsh # snapshot-revert win7 1338041515 --force error: unsupported configuration: revert to external disk snapshot not supported yet version: virsh # version Compiled against library: libvir 0.9.4 Using library: libvir 0.9.4 Using API: QEMU 0.9.4 Running hypervisor: QEMU 1.0.93

[libvirt-users] redirecting guest stdio to the host

Dear Friends, I would ask you a question ; grateful in advance! I have a program running on a VM guest. Its output is valuable (for VM introspection) so I want to let the host module know about it. I prefer to redirect ' stdio" of a guest into a device at the host (a text file or my device that has the name "mydev" and the driver is written for it). I have the XML definition file for my VM in /etc/libvirt/qemu. I have added the section: <serial type="file"> <source path="/var/log/vm/vml.log"/> <target port="0"/> </serial> into the /devices section. That is I want the stdio to be streamed into the file /var/log/vm/vml.log at the host. Then I run simple textual commands at the guest (ls, pwd and so on). Hi I need to run libvirt without ebtables support as it results in following error while running VM.... sudo virsh start instance-0000000b error: Failed to start domain instance-0000000b error: Error while building firewall: Some rules could not be created for interface tapf733e054-fe: Failure to execute command '$EBT -t nat -A libvirt-J-tapf733e054-fe -j J-tapf733e054-fe-mac' : 'Unable to update the kernel. Two possible causes: 1. Multiple ebtables programs were executing simultaneously. The ebtables userspace tool doesn't by default support multiple ebtables programs running concurrently. The ebtables option --concurrent or a tool like flock can be used to support concurrent scripts that update the ebtables kernel tables. 2. The documentation indicates ( via http://libvirt.org/formatnwfilter.html#nwfelemsRulesProtoMAC ) that <mac> rule types should go in the 'root' chain, however one of the example rules ( from http://libvirt.org/git/?p=libvirt.git;a=blob_plain;f=examples/xml/nwfilter/… ) has the mac address match in the ipv4 chain. Which is the correct chain for these?

Greetings sir, I am currently taking up Computer Science in my school. I just want to ask how do you get the CPU usage and Memory usage of the VMs (I'm referring sir to the graphs that the Virtual Machine Manager is displaying)? I need to get the numbers (the numbers are enough, I don't need the graph) of these informations because I will be needing it for my thesis. What suggestions can you give me? Hi all, I have setup some Virtualbox VMs under my normal user session. When I try to list the vbox machines locally I get: $ virsh -c vbox:///session list Id Name State ---------------------------------------------------- 3 Ubuntu-MASS-controller running When I try to list the machines from a remote location I get: $ virsh -c vbox+ssh://theodotos@10.0.2.2/session list setlocale: No such file or directory error: failed to connect to the hypervisor error: Operation not supported: Connecting to session instance without socket path is not supported by the ssh connection driver I have setup public key authentication between the remote machine and the VBox host. Any idea what am I doing wrong?

Hi, I am running OpenStack Cluster and use libvirt + cgroup to limit vm’s performance https://wiki.openstack.org/InstanceResourceQuota What I am confusing is.. 1. After running a vm instance with some croup limit applied, I can’t find any related cgroup settings. 2. Can I change limit value after instance is running? like change disk_read_iops_sec from 10 to 20. Hi Team, I have created a "External system checkpoint snapshot" using the following link. http://kashyapc.fedorapeople.org/virt/external-system-checkpoint-snapshot.t… The disk and ram snapshot has been created successfully. The disk snapshot have the QCOW2 file format,I tried to boot the disk snapshot (qcow2)file using the KVM but it throws the error *" No bootable disk availble"* message, also i tried to revert the snapshot it throws the *"external snapshot revert not yet supported"* error message. Versions details: --------------- Libvirt - 1.0.5 (compiled) Ubuntu - 12.04 I had the following doubts on snapshots. 1. It is possible to directly boot the external system check point snapshots ??? 2. Snapshot boot is supported in libvirt kvm ? 3. [libvirt-users] data monitored by "virDomainBlockStats" API not consistent with ones reading from /proc/[pid]/io, and corrugated with /proc/diskstats

Hi, all. While monitoring KVM VMs’ disk utilisation using libvirt API “virDomainBlockStats", I find that the results acquired is not consistent with the value read from /proc/[vm_pid]/io(i only care about “rd_bytes" and “wr_bytes” fields). Since libvirt doesn’t support host level monitoring, i have to calculate the host’s disk utilisation by reading from the /proc/diskstats file. What’s worse, the individual VM’s disk data may be greater that the physical disk’s total value during some sampling time. It is supposed that the VM’s disk “rd_bytes" and “wr_bytes" should never exceed the value of the physical disk respectively, right ? Doesn’t libvirt virDomainBlockStats read disk information from “proc” ? I want to calculate VM’s bandwidth, here is my way: Firstly, we can get total disk utilisation using tools like iostat("iostat -x”, the %util field represent the disk’s utilisation percentage) Then, given a sampling time period, 10s for example, i collected total bytes read/written by each VM by virDomainBlockStats and total bytes of the physical disk by /proc/diskstats, then delta(VM’s rd+wr bytes)/delta(physical disk’s rd+wr bytes) * %util is the VM’s disk utilization percentage during this time period. Since the appearance of the above situation, i can’t get correct result. I have search a lot for this question, but no answers. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi I'm able to run the below command using root permission.... sudo kvm -netdev bridge,br=qbr0ccdca50-fa,id=hostnet -M ppce500 Warning: netdev hostnet has no peer Could not initialize SDL(No available video device) - exiting However when I'm running the same command without root authority,I'm getting following logs... kvm -netdev bridge,br=qbr0ccdca50-fa,id=hostnet -M ppce500 failed to create tun device: Operation not permitted failed to launch bridge helper kvm: -netdev bridge,br=qbr0ccdca50-fa,id=hostnet: Device 'bridge' could not be initialized I need to run the above command without root authority.Please help regarding this. Hi All, I have one netcf question, please help me to resolve it, thanks. I can set a IFF_RUNNING flag to a bridge device which are no interface device attached. What status of a flag on a bridge device in current kernel?(w/o interface), is this a new change in kernel or other component? In netcf, but there is a patch to fix that flag issue, I can't understand it. fix wrong status of bridge devices The IFF_RUNNING flag is not set on a bridge device if there are no devices attached to it. So bridges without attached devices are reported as inactive. Destroying inactive devices leads to an error and thus the device can't be removed (easily) from the operating system. Hello. I need to do some specific steps to bring up network for domain. I can't use bridge, nat, and other modes. I prefer ethernet type networking that bring up by script. But in case os script i have one big problem - how can i determine and get some domain data - for example if i get domain id, or mac address i can get other needed config. How can i get this data inside the script? [libvirt-users] Strange IPv6 Issues

Hi folks, I'm having the problem that my guests are most of the time not reachable via IPv6 and cant connect to IPv6 hosts, but if I ping the public IPv6-Adress of my bridge, the host can use IPv6 again. This is for incomming and outgoing traffic. Hi guys, I am new to QEMU-KVM, libvmi and libvirt stuff. Libvmi uses libvirt. I am trying to to run process-list example of libvmi and getting error as below. It seems that this error may be due to libvirt as it is not able to find domain. I was under the impression that the value of /etc/machine-id was unqiue for every OS installation on a system. This seems to be the case on real hardware. That is, if I install Fedora 19, Fedora 20, and Fedora-rawhide on a system, they will each have a different value for /etc/machine-id. This does not seem to be the case for qemy-kvm-libvirt virtual systems. SOmetimes they are different but I just noticed that a virtual system with both Fedora 20 and Fedora rawhide installed (btrfs partitioning), the two installations have the same value in /etc/machine-id. The two installs have different ext4 partitions for /boot, different subvols for the respective rootfs and the same/shared subvol for /home. Comment? Bug? Gene

Does the "managed" attribute of the hostdev element for a USB device make a difference? The Domain XML Format docs has the following sentence for the hostdev element: If managed is omitted or "no", and for USB devices, the user is responsible to call virNodeDeviceDettach (or virsh nodedev-dettach) before starting the guest or hot-plugging the device, and virNodeDeviceReAttach (or virsh nodedev-reattach) after hot-unplug or stopping the guest. Is that still accurate? The device seems to get passed through fine to my LXC container without any dettach/reattach calls. But I'm seeing some other strange USB behaviour in the guest and just want to see if it's at all related to the managed attribute. Cheers.

Dear all, I am using libvirt in conjunction with LXC. In accordance with http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementsHostDevCaps I pass an InfiniBand adapter through to the guest container. [libvirt-users] converted VMDK disk iamge and Virtio driver

I have a CentOS 5 VM in vmware I wanted to move to work on KVM/libvirt. I used qemu-img to convert it to a qcow2 image, loaded virt-manager and created a new VM pointed at that qcow2 image. The boot paniced when it tried to mount the root filesystem also complaining about not being able to remount the swap partition. I played around and was able to get it to boot by changing the Virtual disk bus to IDE from Virtio. Searched about Virtio and I got to http://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Virtio and ran the mkinitrd mentioned to force loading of the virtio_pci and virtio_blk drivers. But upon shutting down, configuring the bus back to Virtio and booting it panics in the exact same way. I tried again after adding virtio_blk into /etc/modprobe.conf as scsi_hostadapter and rerunning mkinitrd but it still fails. Hello. I have a strange error with one of my VMs. If i use dumpxml to save a VM description the source part of the network part is missing. This prevents redifining the machine from the dumped xml file: This is how it looks before dumpxml: <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='52:54:00:34:a1:56'/> <source bridge='br406'/> <model type='virtio'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/> </interface> And afterwards: <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='52:54:00:34:a1:56'/> <target dev='vnet6'/> <model type='virtio'/> <alias name='net0'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/> </interface> Someone has an idea whats causing this? [libvirt-users] Use keepalive to monitor health of qemu-kvm process

Hi everyone, I've had instances where qemu-kvm process dies and become a zombie. At that state, libvirtd reports the instance to be running and I can't restart the VM because libvirtd fails to kill the qemu-kvm process. Finding the root cause of that is a topic for another day. I also see this line in logs: Jun 15 13:36:57 d12566 libvirtd: 10424: warning : virKeepAliveTimerInternal:156 : No response from client 0x1600420 after 5 keepalive messages in 31 seconds Is it possible to monitor the keepAlive thing via command-line ? (as a nagios check). I know that I can poll for that line in the logs but is there a better way? I couldn't find any option in virsh to do a KeepAlive check.
