[libvirt-users] bridge / ubuntu / no arp reply
by François Chenais 15 Oct '26

15 Oct '26

Hello I'm trying to setup a bridged guest on an ubuntu 13.10 but it doesn't work. (Everything is ok with NAT) Network sniffing shows that arp replies don't come back to the guest. Test 1 ------ Guest : ping host_bridge_ip (ok) Test 2 ------ Guest: ping other_lan_host (KO) other_lan_host - receives arp who-is request - sends arp reply - arp -a shows the guest macaddr => Guest doesn't receive reply Test 3 ------ other_lan_host ping the Guest (KO) - arp -a shows "incomplete" addr - Guest receives nothing On Host ------- network tcpdump on bridge or vnet interfaces shows request but no reply ... Thanks in advance for help or ideas François

[libvirt-users] virRandomBits - not very random
by Brian Rak 01 Jun '18

01 Jun '18

I just ran into an issue where I had about 30 guests get duplicate mac addresses assigned. These were scattered across 30 different machines. Some debugging revealed that: 1) All the host machines were restarted within a couple seconds of each other 2) All the host machines had fairly similar libvirtd pids (within ~100 PIDs of each other) 3) Libvirt seeds the RNG using 'time(NULL) ^ getpid()' This perfectly explains why I saw so many duplicate mac addresses. Why is the RNG seed such a predictable value? Surely there has to be a better source of a random seed then the timestamp and the pid? The PID seems to me to be a very bad source of any randomness. I just ran a test across 60 of our hosts. 43 of them shared their PID with at least one other machine.

[libvirt-users] Freeze Windows Guests For Consistent Storage Snapshots
by Payes Anand 09 Jun '15

09 Jun '15

Hi, Is it possible to freeze windows guests for a consistent storage level snapshot. I am using openstack icehouse on centos 6.6 Hypervisor: KVM Libvirt: 0.10.2 Qemu: 0.10.2 Guest OS: Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 I was able to freeze Centos guests by issuing the command: virsh qemu-agent-command <guest_ID> '{"execute":"guest-fsfreeze-freeze"}' For CentOS guests, I enabled access between compute nodes and guests through a socket by setting metadata parameter, hw_qemu_guest_agent=yes for the guest image. And then installing qemu-guest-agent inside the guest. What steps do i have to follow for windows ? Regars, Payes

[libvirt-users] Using virsh blockcopy -- what's it supposed to accomplish?
by Gary R Hook 09 Jan '15

09 Jan '15

I am experimenting with the blockcopy command, and after figuring out how to integrate qemu-nbd, nbd-client and dumpxml/undefine/blockcopy/define/et. al. I have one remaining question: What's the point? The "replication" disk file is not, from what I can ascertain, bootable. I expect this operation to create a pristine copy of my source qcow2 file (at a given point in time) which implies that I can swap that copy in and use it just like the original. Neither using --finish nor --pivot (both appear successful) give me a mirror that seems to serve any purpose. It seems especially pointless if I use --pivot because anything that happens after the pivot ends up lost if I don't actually have a usable qcow2 file. I find lots of discussion online about getting the steps to work, but as yet find nothing about using the resulting file. What am I missing here? libvirt (1.2.2) and qemu (2.2.0) as distributed with Ubuntu Trusty. -- Gary R Hook Senior Kernel Engineer NIMBOXX, Inc

[libvirt-users] Console access for a user.
by Le Bris Gilles 02 Jan '15

02 Jan '15

Hi, I would like to allow a user (non-root) to access the console of his VM (he's got root access on it). Using sudo doesn't seem to work: /bin/virsh console vm error: failed to get domain 'vm' error: Domain not found: no domain with matching name 'vm' If I assign suid to virsh, I get: 'error: Failed to initialize libvirt' I don't see any information on Internet about this. What is the procedure to follow to get this result (QEMU conf, libvirt conf, etc)? Thank you in advance.

[libvirt-users] Bhyve drv creates duplicate tap0 references
by William B 29 Dec '14

29 Dec '14

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Good morning, I am not sure if this is a known issue or if I should raise as a bug. When using libvirt 1.2.11 on FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE with bhyve, I have notice that a machine which defines: <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='52:54:00:88:44:08'/> <source bridge='bridge10'/> <model type='virtio'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x02' function='0x0'/> </interface> <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='52:54:00:42:8f:c1'/> <source bridge='bridge11'/> <model type='virtio'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/> </interface> Generates a bhyve command from domxml-to-native that contains the interfaces such that: - -s 2:0,virtio-net,tap0,mac=52:54:00:88:44:08 -s 3:0,virtio-net,tap0,mac=52:54:00:42:8f:c1 As a result, in this configuration, no network traffic works due to the duplication of the tap0 device in each command. [libvirt-users] "virsh list" does not show anything after reboot [newbie]
by Kevin Wilson 23 Dec '14

23 Dec '14

Hi, libvirt users and gurus, I am a newbie to visualization, hope this question is not too silly, please bear with me. I had installed three guest on Fedora 21 with the virt-install tool, by: virt-install --name=f21_x86_64_guest --file=/var/lib/libvirt/images/guest.qcow2 --cdrom /workStorage/work/down/f21/Fedora-Live-Workstation-x86_64-21-5.iso --ram=2048 virt-install --name=f21_x86_64_guest1 --file=/var/lib/libvirt/images/guest.qcow2 --cdrom /workStorage/work/down/f21/Fedora-Live-Workstation-x86_64-21-5.iso --ram=2048 --force virt-install --name=f21_x86_64_guest2 --file=/var/lib/libvirt/images/guest.qcow2 --cdrom /workStorage/work/down/f21/Fedora-Live-Workstation-x86_64-21-5.iso --ram=2048 --force When runing "virsh list" I see these three guests as running. Now, I rebooted the machine, and "virsh list" does not show anything. It turned out that running "systemctl status libvirtd" showed some error (about some NFS path which was not found), and once I fixed that, I restarted the libvirtd, and this time running "systemctl status libvirtd" showed that it is running OK. Yet, runnig "virsh list" does not show anything Any ideas ? what I should do to run one of these guest I created before booting the machine ? Regards, Kevin

[libvirt-users] why CPU pinning doesn't take effect when using lxc-enter-namespace to run an application

Dear all, I want my container to run on the third CPU core and I define this by the following xml scrpits: <vcpu placement="static" cpuset="3">1</vcpu> When I run my application in a container terminal, I can see the application runs on the third core as expected. When I run my application using lxc-enter-namespace, the CPU pinning doesn't take effect, i.e., the application runs on a core which isn't the third one. How can I solve this problem? Any replies are highly appreciated. Cheng

[libvirt-users] Device attach event
by Marek Marczykowski-Górecki 22 Dec '14

22 Dec '14

Hi all, I'm trying to use libvirt events API, but I can't find what event is fired when some device (disk in this case) got attached to the domain. In the docs I see only VIR_DOMAIN_EVENT_ID_DEVICE_REMOVED, but not VIR_DOMAIN_EVENT_ID_DEVICE_ATTACHED. Is there some event for that? BTW libxl driver implements only VIR_DOMAIN_EVENT_ID_LIFECYCLE, but that's another story... -- Best Regards, Marek Marczykowski-Górecki Invisible Things Lab A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. [libvirt-users] Virtual machine removal through command line.
by Le Bris Gilles 20 Dec '14

20 Dec '14

Hi, Until today, I hadn't found a way to cleanly remove a KVM virtual machine through command line on CentOS 6 or 7! I had to run 'systemctl restart libvirtd' or 'service libvirtd restart' After several months (!!!), I found this thread: https://github.com/pradels/vagrant-libvirt/issues/107 Now, I know how to cleanly remove a KVM virtual machine (with default file location): virsh destroy vm.example.com virsh undefine vm.example.com --managed-save /bin/rm /var/lib/libvirt/images/vm.example.com.img /bin/rm /var/log/libvirt/qemu/vm.example.com.log virsh vol-delete /var/lib/libvirt/images/vm.example.com.img --pool default I don't know if the last command ('virsh vol-delete' avoiding the libvirtd restart) is a bug or a feature but it must be documented! Only a libvirt developer can guess something like this. Feel free to change my instructions in any way you think it's better but at least document this in a public place (http://wiki.libvirt.org for example). Regards.

[libvirt-users] LVM storage
by Boylan, Ross 19 Dec '14

19 Dec '14

Hi. I have some narrow questions and a larger one. If I make an existinig LVM VG a storage pool, can I use some of the LV's for libvirt and some for the host? Or does the VG needed to be completely dedicated to virtualization? Assuming mixed use is possible, is it possible to do an LVM snapshot of an LV in use for a VM? The snapshot would have to be initiated and used on the host, I assume. How dynamic is this? If I create a new LV, is it possible to see that immediately from, e.g., virt-manager and add it as a virtual disk to a running VM? If I resize the LV, will the VM know so that, e.g., I could do an online resize of the filesystem? My larger question is what the recommendations are for managing disks or LV's with libvirt and KVM on Linux. In particular, I'd like to be able to grow storage space as the the VM needs grow, and snapshot (in the LVM sense) some of the block devices behind filesystems for backup. Although it would be nice to grow space while the VM's are running, it's not a requirement. Following advice on the KVM list, I have been using raw LV's as virtual disks for the VM's. The host is currently running with a large, encrypted LVM VG. It would be convenient to use it for the VM's.

[libvirt-users] virsh list shows no vm after downgrade
by Chengyuan Li 19 Dec '14

19 Dec '14

Hi, I was running libvirt 1.2.2 and qemu 2.0 which are from icehouse cloud archive repo on ubuntu 12.04, "virsh list --all" showed correct instances after launching several VMs, Then I just downgraded libvirt to 0.9.13 and qemu to 1.0, but kept the VMs running. However, when I run "virsh list --all" after downgrade, I can't see any VMs. Seems that the old version libvirt 0.9.13 doesn't know the instances created by libvirt 1.2.2. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Regards, Chengyuan.

[libvirt-users] Again with same Cgroup issue :)
by mad Engineer 17 Dec '14

17 Dec '14

Hello All, From the last couple of days i have been spamming this mailing list with request for configuring Cgroup with libvirtd on Centos systems. I still can not find a permanent solution to limit host RAM to particular value, tried creating a separate hierarchy "mykvm" and changed in sysconfig/libvirtd after that vm's memory cgroup reflects this. But it is not obeying "memory.limit_in_bytes" set in "mykvm" group,i als specified it in cgrules.conf and restarted it.If i change that in "/cgconfig/memory/mykvm/libvirt/qemu/memory.limit_in_bytes " its working. But that is dynamic as i am not able to find a way to mention that in "cgconfig.conf". How can i make sub hierarchies follow what is set in parent cgroup? eg: if change variables in "/cgconfig/memory/mykvm" then all instances coming under "/cgconfig/memory/mykvm/libvirt/qemu/" should follow that value..How is it possible. Can you please help

[libvirt-users] C group hierarchy and libvirtd
by mad Engineer 15 Dec '14

15 Dec '14

On Centos 6.4 x64,with libvirt-0.10.2-18.el6.x86_64 i am trying to set "memory.limit_in_bytes" for all qemu process. changed "cgconfig.conf" group mygroup{ perm { admin { uid = root; gid = root; } task { uid = qemu; gid = kvm; } } memory { memory.limit_in_bytes = 61G; } } and also added "CGROUP_DAEMON=memory:/mygroup" in sysconfig/libvirtd and in cgrules.conf and then restarted services. Now i can see created virtual machines use cgroup hierarchy "/cgroup/memory/mygroup/libvirt/qemu/virtualmachine1/" instead of "/cgroup/memory/libvirt/qemu/virtualmachine1/". The issue is "memory.limit_in_bytes" set to "mygroup" is getting applied only to libvirtd process.VM are not following memory.limit_in_bytes set to "mygroup". 1. how can i set this globally so that all virtual machines follow that, i dont want to create a new group for that if libvirt supports it. 2.Is there any way i can avoid extra hierarchy and create virtual machines memory cgroup under "/cgroup/memory/kvm/" instead of "/cgroup/memory/mygroup/libvirt/qemu/" ? please help me fix this issue.I have this working on ubuntu servers where i specified "libvirt-qemu" user and VMs follow that cgroup for memory. [libvirt-users] Two identical hosts, different capabilities and topologies
by Davide Ferrari 09 Dec '14

09 Dec '14

Hello, I've two twin servers (Dell PowerEdge R815) dedicated to kvm+libvirt and they have the same exact CPU (AMD Opteron(TM) Processor 6272) with the same topology (2 sockets, 16 cores per socket, so a total of 32 CPUs seen by the kernel) but both virsh -r capabilities and virsh nodeinfo say that the two machines are different - but they really are not! - and this prevents live migration from one server to another (but the other way round works). Attached you will find the output of some programs, if you need more info just ask. They are both running Debian Wheezy with latest backported kvm/libvirt (libvirt-daemon 1.2.9-6~bpo70+1). A curious fact is that kvm-host-01 detects the wrong topology (1 socket, 32 cores per socket) but it displays more capabilities, so migrating from kvm-host-02 -> kvm-host-01 works but from 01 to 02 fails. Any idea? Thanks in advance

[libvirt-users] snapshots and qcow2
by Laszlo Hornyak 09 Dec '14

09 Dec '14

Hi, I ran into a strange behavior with libvirt snapshots. I have some vms running with thin-provisioned qcow2 disk images (libvirt 1.1.3 with fedora 20). * When I create a snapshot on the VM, the qcow file suddenly grows big, somewhat bigger than the maximum size of the disk. * When I delete the snapshot, the allocated disk space is not freed up, the qcow image remains the same size. However, if I create a new snapshot again, it will take the previous snapshot's space. This does not seem to be very well documented in qemu and the man page, manual, online documentation, wiki etc does not mention it. Is there a way to free up the space allocated for snapshots? by Jason Vas Dias 08 Dec '14

Good day - Is there a way of safely allowing a guest OS to access a disk storage device that is also mounted at the same time by the hypervisor or another guest ? I have Linux LVM volumes containing ext4 and btrfs filestystems that need to be shared between the hypervisor and the guests, and between guests . Attempts to use NFS are too slow to be useable - it takes a guest around 4 hours to uncompress and extract a 10MB tar file (using 4 2.9GHz cores). I need access to the shared file system at all times to use as my /home directory from the hypervisor host, so I guess this rules out iSCSI . I came accross documentation on 'sanlock', but its purpose seems to be antithetical to what I require, as described at: http://libvirt.org/locking.html : " how to ensure a single disk cannot be used by more than one running VM at a time, across any host in a network" - but I want to ensure SAFE concurrent access by multiple VMs or any kernel , either on the hypervisor hardware or in a VM guest, to the same filesystems ( ext4, btrfs ) on the same machine, without having to use a network file system . Can sanlock be used to accomplish this ? Or is there any other method that allows the same filesystem to be safely accessed by more than one kernel running on the same host ? The libvirt documentation is very sketchy on this subject, but I understand that just using the '<shareable/>' in the VM configuration XML is not enough, and a lock manager must be configured - can sanlock be used for this, or is there another lock manager that can ? Thanks & Regards, Jason Vas Dias

[libvirt-users] Libvirt Live Migration
by Dhia Abbassi 04 Dec '14

04 Dec '14

I'm trying to implement a virtualization API. I was testing migration with libvirt I got some problems. When I use the following command : *virsh migrate --live --persistent --copy-storage-all vm-clone1 qemu+ssh://server_ip/system* the migration works fine but in the destination host the migrated vm is paused and I can't unpause it and I need to reboot the vm to be able use it in the new host. When I try to unoause it Igot the following error message: << *Error unpausing domain: internal error: unable to execute QEMU command 'cont': Resetting the Virtual Machine is required *>> How can I solve this problem, or is there an other way to make a live migration with libvirt?? Thank you for you consideration. -- Best regards *Dhia Abbassi* Full Stack Engineer | Rosafi Holding <http://tn.linkedin.com/in/dhiaabbassi> <https://github.com/DhiaTN> <https://plus.google.com/u/0/+DhiaAbbassi> <https://twitter.com/DhiaTN>

[libvirt-users] Problem with /dev/tty in LXC established with virt-install
by Vegard Vesterheim 04 Dec '14

04 Dec '14

I have created a LXC container with debootstrap followed by virt-install like this: host=mylxc1 debootstrap wheezy /home/lxc/$host virt-install -c lxc:// -n $host --filesystem /home/lxc/$host,/ --ram 1024 I am confused about the /dev filesystem in this container. Specifically the device '/dev/tty'. >From inside the container: ~# ls -la /dev/tty ls: cannot access /dev/tty: No such file or directory # mknod -m 666 /dev/tty c 4 0 mknod: `/dev/tty': Operation not permitted A LXC container created and started with the native LXC commands (lxc-create/lxc-start) has a functioning /dev/tty: # cat </dev/tty foo foo ^C How can I create a functioning /dev/tty with the LXC driver in libvirt? - Vegard V -

[libvirt-users] Libvirt building fails after download from git
by Pavel Khrulev 03 Dec '14

03 Dec '14

Hello. I need to build libvirt-1.2.10 (with mingw fix) in mingw in windows. I did autogen in linux mint 16, then transferred all files from libvirt directory (sources, configure, makefile.in, ... ) to windows xp. Libvirt is successfully builded in mingw in winxp. Ok. I uploaded all libvirt files (that were successfully builded) to git repository from linux. Then I cloning git rep to windows. And when I do configure, then config.h is not the same with config.h, which is created earlier (before git). And due to this config.h, building libvirt is failed. All files (before upload and arter download ) are the same (checked by KDiff). Do you know, what a problem? May be the problem is in timestamps. (But I tried to touch all files) Or some reconfigure after git. I really dont know. Pavel Khrulev

[libvirt-users] serial connection between two guests
by Jd 01 Dec '14

01 Dec '14

Hi Is it possible to drive a serial connection between two guests ? For example, the virt-io serial channel used by guestfsd. Can it be driven by virt-io serial connection from another VM ? How do you attach the same device on host as server in one VM and client as another ? Any details on how to go about doing this ? Thanks /Jd
