[libvirt-users] How to insert vcpupin in guest xml file

Hi all, I am trying to add vcpupin in the guest xml file. I am working with openstack and the code I have is python bound. I investigated through the code and found that the elemets in xml file are set in get_guest_config function. Now the thing is I am not able to set vcpupin element. [libvirt-users] Modify Iptables Rules (virbr0 & virbr1)

Hi, I have some guests running in the "default" network (virbr0) and I've also created a similar (NAT) network (virbr1). Therefore, the FORWARD chain for the CentOS 6.4 host looks like this: http://fpaste.org/29229/75281379/ ...where line 3-7 are related to virbr0 and 8-12 to virbr1. My 2 questions: 1) I've noticed that I can ping from a guest within virbr0 to any guest on the virbr1 network. However, I can't do the same from virbr1 (ping guests on virbr0). This is because of "line 6" on the pastebin, where the traffic is REJECTED. I originally thought that If I create multiple NAT networks (just like the default virbr0) they would be able to talk to each other (the host doing the actual forwarding) but as you can see, based on the iptables rules that libvirt injects, this only happens for the first network. That is, the first network can reach all other networks (just because it happens to be the first one defined). Is this the intention (only default can talk to the others but not the other way around)? 2) I would like both networks to talk to each other. If I remove line #6 I can make virbr1 guests talk to virbr0 guests. What is the correct way to handle this? I obviously don't want to perform "iptables -D FORWARD line-number..." every time I start libvirt. (I really like to leave the networks as they are, NAT, dhcp running etc). Thanks! Jorge

Hi, I'm trying to configure nwfilter for KVM, but so far I haven't managed to figure out a working configuration. Network setup: The dom0 (Debian 7.1, kernel 3.2.46-1, libvirt 0.9.12) is connected via eth0, part of the external subnet 192.168.17.0/24, and has an additional subnet 192.168.128.160/28 routed to its main address 192.168.17.125. [libvirt-users] Installing libvirt

Hi, I am trying to install new libvirt version on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Now I downloaded libvirt 1.0.5 from libvirt.org/sources then I issued three commands: ./autogen.sh make make install This installs the libvirt on my system. But there are some issues, I have to run libvirtd explicitly everytime I reboot my system. And whenever I try to run virt-manager from terminal, it says "No D-Bus daemon running". But when I do "sudo virt-manager", it runs fine. Any idea what am I doing wrong? Thanks. ~Peeyush Gupta

[libvirt-users] Quick questions on virtio-serial transport

Hi, I am using the virtio-serial transport for communication between the host and the guest. I've created the channel using virt-install: virt-install --name=centos --import --disk /var/lib/libvirt/images/centos.img,size=15 \ --ram 2048 \ --vcpus=2 \ --arch=x86_64 --os-type linux --network=bridge:br1 --graphics vnc \ --noautoconsole \ --channel pty,target_type=virtio,name=guest1 This correctly creates a file "/dev/virtio-ports/guest1" in the guest for the guest to communicate with the host. So the guest side of things are good. Now on the host side, I see a two files being created in /dev/pts directory. $ ls -alt /dev/pts crw--w---- 1 qemu tty 136, 1 Jul 31 15:49 1 crw--w---- 1 qemu tty 136, 2 Jul 31 15:49 2 So here are my questions: i) I was wondering if there is anyway of knowing which of these files correspond to the other end of the channel without having to manually echoing data to each of these files and see which of the data shows up on the guest side. ii) I was also wondering if there is anyway of identifying the host side endpoint i.e., /dev/pts/FILE of the channel programatically iii) Better yet can the /dev/pts/FILE be explicitly passed as an argument while creating a channel in the guest so the host knows that it is supposed to use the /dev/pts/FILE if it wants to talk to the guest. I read a prior post on this mailing list: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2012-May/msg00964.html It mentions that from the host side one could dump the xml of the guest and identify the "source path" of the channel, something in the lines of <channel type='pty'> <source path='/dev/pts/12'/> <target type='virtio' name='arbitrary.virtio.serial.port.name'/> <alias name='channel0'/> <address type='virtio-serial' controller='0' bus='0' port='2'/> </channel> but I do not find the source path in the XML description of the guest I've created. This is what I see in the XML file. <channel type='pty'> <target type='virtio' name='guest1'/> <address type='virtio-serial' controller='0' bus='0' port='1'/> </channel> I was wondering if I am missing something. Release 0.11.0 is a bugfix and feature release for Oz. Hi, I use the QEMU-GlusterFS native integration (no Fuse mount) with the libvirt. Now I create a volume issuing : # qemu-img create gluster://localhost/gv1/test.img 5G Then using the libvirt I declare the following lines in my domain.xml : <disk type='network' device='disk'> <driver name='qemu' cache='none'/> <source protocol='gluster' name='gv1/test.img'> <host name='127.0.0.1' transport='tcp' /> </source> <target dev='vda' bus='virtio'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x05' function='0x0'/> </disk> It works really well. But the better way, would be to only use the libvirt. Is it planned to support a native glusterFS pool type ? Hi all, I am working with libvirt and I am trying to set cpu affinity. Now I can always use virsh vcpupin <domain_name> <vcpu> <pcpu> to pin vcpus to pcpus. I want to do it using Python API. Now, there is function pinVcpu which is supposed to do that. But this is not working. For example I gave dom.pinVcpu(0,1) but still my vcpu affinity is for all the pcpus. Hi, I try to run a debian testing guest inside a debian stable host and would like to use both physical displays to show virtual displays of my guest. Is this possible? I tried setting the heads attribute in the domain xml as described here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=885806#c1 I've tried virt-managers internal viewer, virt-viewer and spicy without any indication of a second display. Hi Is there a way i can trigger a script within a libvirt guest immediately after resume? E.g. i don't see any log message that indicates to a guest that it had been paused and was just woken up. The problem that i am trying to solve is that when i reboot the host (pausing all guests), the guests' system clocks are a few minutes late after resume. The guests RTC (current_clocksource = kvm-clock) are correct though, so a "hwclock --hctosys" fixed the offset. I only need to find out how to call hwclock right after resume! Right now i call hwclock every few minutes, but i'd like to shorten the window of wrong time. OTOH i'd like to avoid installing ntpd into all guests, given their perfectly fine RTCs. On the host i am using CentOS 6.4 with all patches and the packaged libvirt-0.10.2 and qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2. All guests are Ubuntu 12.04. /nils.

Warning - I'm fairly new to libvirt, lxc and systemd so there is a good chance I'm doing something terribly wrong here. However, instead of continuing to struggle, I figured I would mail the list for some advice. What I'm trying to accomplish is a libvirt-lxc, systemd-based container running on my system (Fedora 19). I've read that sharing the underlying OS filesystem with the containers doesn't work, so I've installed a minimal Fedora 19 install in /srv/mycontainer. Everything seems to work okay but what I'm struggling with is how to setup the initial accounts. I've tried to attach to the container using 'nsenter' (entering all the namespaces) but it doesn't appear that the bind mounts are in place. For example, I see the /etc/passwd for my host OS, not the container. Is there a better way to setup the initial accounts on the container? Hello People. We are currently exploring the possibility to use libvirt and kvm/quemu for production purposes. The general stability seems good enough and the performance is great. There are some issues we do not understand here yet. For security reasons we are considering the extensive use of Networkfilters for virtual machines. But we found some simple scheme for a test-server not to be working as we expected. It might well be that we misunderstand something here, so I am hoping someone could point out to us, where either we or perhaps libvirt failed in this example. We are using an ubuntu 13.04 Server running the provided "1.0.2-0ubuntu11.13.04.2" libvirt-bin using amd64-architecture. The type of VM should not be relevant for this problem. Its a linux-based xmpp-Server which uses ucarp. I reduced the used filter-file just so i could prove my point. It contains: <filter name='linux-based-xmpp-server' chain='root'> <uuid>fb539996-eed5-11e2-8bd3-00e081e0f040</uuid> <rule action='accept' direction='in' priority='999'> <tcp state='NEW' dstportstart='5222'/> </rule> <rule action='accept' direction='in' priority='999'> <tcp state='NEW' dstportstart='5269'/> </rule> <rule action='accept' direction='inout' priority='999'> <ip dstipaddr='224.0.0.18' proto='112'/> </rule> <rule action='reject' direction='inout' priority='999'> <all/> </rule> </filter> Practically it should allow TCP-traffic on Ports 5222,5269 incoming and incoming and outgoing traffic for ip protocol 112 to destination ip 224.0.0.18 (VRRP used by ucarp). Note: It is clear to me that this example won't work as areal world example, because packets of the state ESTABLISHED,RELATED are not allowed through the firewall. I removed these rules because they where in a filter-file i referenced. With outbound QoS setting in Libvirt XML, libvirt will add a tc ingress qdisc for traffic shaping. Then if you set VLAN tag to that tap device, this qdisc will automatically gone by no reason. Hello all, I have two issues: 1) I am unable to start a seemingly correct LXC domain (I cloned it from a working domain). 2) I am able to crash "libvirtd" by attempting to start the cloned domain, but starting the original works just fine. I humbly submit that item #2 is a bug - the "libvirtd" daemon should never crash due to anything the "libvirt" client throws at it. As for item #1, I'm not sure where I went wrong. A full walk-through is below (ending with a DIFF of the XML from the two domains). I created by original domain ("dwj-lnx-dev") a long time ago. Today I created the new domain ("dwj-hfax-dev") as follows: 1) Shutdown "dwj-lnx-dev" 2) Clone the root file system: "cd /vm/lxc/; cp -a dwj-lnx-dev dwj-hfax-dev" (2.5GB, ~5 min) 3) "libvirt -c lxc:/// dumpxml dwj-lnx-dev > a.xml" 4) ${EDITOR} a.xml a) changed MAC address, name, memory, source directory for "/" 5) "libvirt -c lxc:/// define a.xml" 6) Edit "/etc/bind/pri/*" and "/etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf" on my host. It does not matter is "dwj-lnx-dev" is running or not. Any attempt to start "dwj-hfax-dev" will crash libvirtd. [libvirt-users] OSX: trying to use libvirt 1.1.0 with VirtualBox 4.2

I see that libvirt 1.1.0 should now support virtualbox 4.2, but I'm having problems getting it to work in OSX. I have built it using homebrew, which now has 1.1.0 in its formulae. The error I get when tying to connect is shown below. Any suggestions for where I should look next? The error about "Failed to find user record for uid 'NNNNN'" is odd. libvirtd *is* started automatically, and runs as my own userid (brian, id 502). Each time libvirtd times out, and restarts again, it shows a different uid in this error message. Thanks, Brian. What I tried to resolve this: 1) On the host, I echoed various stuff to the cgroup device files: cd /sys/fs/cgroup/devices/libvirt/lxc echo "c 10:200 rwm" > devices.allow echo "c 10:200 rwm" > depot/devices.allow echo a > depot/devices.allow ... and I see the successful results in depot/devices.list, but no success. 2) I inserted a line "/dev/net/tun rwk," into /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/lxc/container-base - no change. (I know, it seems kind of pointless - because it's about permissions to a device, not a path. You may deduce my desperation from this ... SELinux is not active. Mounts on /dev look normal to me: devfs on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755) devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=0620) devpts on /dev/ptmx type devpts (rw,nosuid,relatime,gid=5,mode=620,ptmxmode=666) cgroup on /sys/fs/cgroup/devices type cgroup (rw,relatime,devices) Now comes the weird part: Once I umount /dev inside the container, the "hidden" /dev appears which contains a usable /dev/net/tun. So the mknod problem is probably due to the dropped capabilities - but why/how mounts the container a more restricted /dev on top of the prepared one ...? Hi, i have a SLES 11 SP2 64bit host with three guests: - Windows XP 32 - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit - SLES 11 SP2 64bit The SLES guest shuts down with the host shutdown. The others not. When i shutdown these two guests with the virt-manager, they shutdown fine. ACPI is activated in virt-manager for both of them. Acpid is running in the Ubuntu Client. Hi All, I am trying to use libvirt to connect to hypervisor. I need some help with this. 1. I am using mac os - Mountain Lion. 2. I have installed libvirt using macports. 3. I am able to connect to the vcenter server using virsh tool. 4. However i am not able to connect using libvirt java program. The issue it seems that virt library cannot be found. (Sample output attached). The question is how do i get libvirt.dylib on my mac. Hey, I'm trying to figure out a way to get a list of the running domains on a dom0. I can get the ID's but I'd prefer the names. We have another script written in perl, but I'm trying to get some other functionality in python as well as work on converting it all to python. It looks like perl has a list_domains() that will, according to the libvirt doc, "Return a list of all running domains currently known to the VMM". I am trying to run a VM on Ubuntu 12.04 which in turn is guest on Fedora 18 host. I am using qemu, kvm and libvirt. I tried to run the following command: virt-install --name dsl --ram 1024 --vcpus 2 --cdrom /home/peeyush/Downloads/some_iso_file.iso --disk path=/path_to_disk My machine here runs with only one vcpu. While when I tried the exact same thing on my Fedora 18 host, it shows two cpus. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. ~Peeyush Gupta

I'm using KVM, libvirt and DRBD to come up with a custom mirroring and live migration setup. I have two servers, each running KVM and libvirt, and both using DRBD to mirror guests (which are stored on raw DRBD partitions). If I shut down a guest on one, I can easily get it up and running on the other without issue. I have run into some file system corruption trouble if I try to do a live migration. I need to use an existing windows 7 installation in a virtual machine form a libvirt host running Ubuntu 12.10. Windows 7 installs on two partitions. There a 100MB boot partitiona and then the main partition for the installation. If I boot the laptop (which dual boots), I can select Windows 7 and boot it just fine, or alternative Ubuntu. If I select /dev/sda1 in the virtmanager as the source path I can see dis activity, but in the VM window the "booting from hard disk..." text never does away. If I select /dev/sda2 (where the windows installation resides (and which is not marked as bootable), I get a boot failure right away. Hello. I'm very happy with libvirt and qemu, that great software! (after some playing i want to create golang bindings to libvirt).. Now i provide ext4 fs for qcow2 images (raid1 with two sata disks). Now i don't need live migration (but may need it in feature). What is the best way to provide disks to vm in case of performance, ability to create backups (i don't want lvm snapshots)? As i search from google more speed can take physical storage - lvm. Hi libvirt: -------- My "short" question is - is there a recipe for installing F19 100% automatically with static IPs? I'm using a combination of url based install with a kickstart script pasted to a gist in order to bootstrap the entire thing. It **used** to work (fedora16), but recently stopped. ------- Note : Right now Im not using the os-variant switch because fedora17+ arent listed as OS variant's in my version of virt-install. That in and of itself could be the problem -- any way to update virt-install's os-variant list? ------ With Fedora 16, I found that the url based install failed due to a corrupt rpm. I assume this is just because f16 isn't supported anymore so errors on the web site for it are not being fixed. With Fedora 18/19/... Im finding other types of errors related to missing downloaded components when the bootstrapping virt-install starts. In particular, a 404 (not found) error when fetching " product.img " from the OS url. Details below. <note, any insights into things I may be missing due to ignorance would also be appreciated here> -------- With Fedora 18: I've noticed that libvirt gives me some errors with the new generation of fedora formatted os's source directories. It looks for a file "product.img", which (I beleive) doesnt exist in fedora17+. Hey! I have some RHEL6 hypervisors and the VMs are in raw qemu image files in a local raid array linux raid + lvm + ext3. When a kernel update is installed a reboot is necessary, usually it has been more than 180 days since the last reboot and the file system is fsck'd and this takes 2-3 hours. I am curious to know if there is any documentation that addresses the pro's and con's of fsck'ing the volume containing /var/lib/libvirt/images. Could fsck make a change to the underlying file system that the guest images are stored on, which the guest operating system may not be able to handle when it runs its own file system maintenance, i.e. fsck or chkdsk. Is file system maintenance on the hypervisor volume storing the VM images redundant to the VM's own file system consistancy utilities. Regards, Jamie Ian Fargen

Hi all, I have been trying to run a VM on some particular cpu cores. Now the thing is I can set cpuset with virt-install and that will reflect in VM's XML and it will define the affinity. But what about cpuset.cpus? That is inherited directly from the parent. Is there any way to set it when launching the VM? Again, if I have given cpuset during virt-install, why doesn't cpuset.cpus reflect the value instead of inheriting it from parent? Thanks. ~Peeyush Gupta

Hi all, I am trying to set up exclusive cpu access for two different VMs. Now, in the hierarchy, the directories of both the VM's are inside /libvirt/qemu/$VM. I have 3 cpus on my machine. I have done echo 0 > cpuset.cpus and echo 1 > cpuset.cpu_exclusive for one VM. Now, I am launching another VM using virt-install and I have given the option --cpuset 1. There is no overlapping of cpus here, but still libvirt is showing error that it's unable to create cgroup for the new VM. Is it possible to have two exclusive cpusets inside a same hierarchy? ~Peeyush Gupta

Hi all, I have been trying to use cpuset with virt-install. I am using the following command: $ virt-install --virt-type kvm --name Ubuntu13 --ram 1024 --cdrom=/home/peeyush/Downloads/ubuntu-13.04-desktop-i386.iso --cpuset=0,2 --disk path=/var/lib/libvirt/guest.qcow2,size=10,format=qcow2 Now, according to virt-install man page, my VM's cpu affinity should be set to pcpu 0 and 2 . But when I did virsh vcpuinfo $VM, it shows that the affinity is to all cpus. I checked the xml file of my VM and it has the cpuset attribute, but still my VM is running on all cpus. ~Peeyush Gupta

Hello I have a question about live migration when libvirt requires sasl authentication. I have managed to configure remote access for user nova with sasl enabled (credentials stored in auth.conf - https://review.openstack.org/#/c/12706/) It looks like live migration do not use these credentials at all. What is more it thinks that sasl is not not configured: 2013-07-01 09:49:09.317+0000: 17997: error : virNetSASLSessionClientStart:484 : authentication failed: Failed to start SASL negotiation: -4 (SASL(-4): no mechanism available: No worthy mechs found) 2013-07-01 09:49:09.317+0000: 17997: error : doPeer2PeerMigrate:2527 : operation failed: Failed to connect to remote libvirt URI qemu+tcp://n12c1/system I execute migration like this: nova live-migration c923af69-4cb3-46dd-8bd2-871812d7d223 n12c1 Nova.conf: live_migration_flag=VIR_MIGRATE_UNDEFINE_SOURCE,VIR_MIGRATE_PEER2PEER,VIR_MIGRATE_LIVE Could you please let me know whether nova/libvirt support p2p live migration with sasl and if so point out what might be misconfigured? Disabling sasl solves all my problems but I have to configure some authentication.
