Hi,all,i am using libvirt to manage my vm,in these days i am testing the libvirt snapshot ,but meet some problem: the snapshot was created from this command: snapshot-create-as win7 --disk-only --diskspec vda,snapshot=external --diskspec hda,snapshot=no but when i tried to revert from the snapshot which created from the above command ,i got error below: virsh # snapshot-revert win7 1338041515 --force error: unsupported configuration: revert to external disk snapshot not supported yet version: virsh # version Compiled against library: libvir 0.9.4 Using library: libvir 0.9.4 Using API: QEMU 0.9.4 Running hypervisor: QEMU 1.0.93

Hello According to client authentication in documentation ( http://libvirt.org/auth.html) it is possible to store credentials in auth.conf file and make appropriate mappings to servers: [auth-$SERVICE-$HOSTNAME] credentials=$CREDENTIALS Is it possible to use the same credentials for many servers without explicitly describing it? [libvirt-users] VMware distributed port groups..Supported?

Hi, I installed libvirt on CentOS 6 today, only to find I could create the volume, create the VM, but could not assign the interface to a distributed port group. I then downloaded the latest source, compiled, and it looks to be the same...unless its under a command I'm not recognizing? Does anybody have the great tip that is going to set me free? I hope? Everything we use is on the vSwitches, as we run 60-80 VLAN's to each cluster member. -- Thanks, Morgan

[libvirt-users] managedsave results in unexpected shutdown from inside Windows

Hi, I'm facing a strange behaviour of windows 2008 guests. After a virsh managedsave and start, the windows guest open a "unexpected shutdown" window. The window looks like this one (randomly taken from the web): http://toastytech.com/guis/srv2k3login2.jpg This happens in all virtualized windows in a hypervisor. Apologies as this is is not a specific libvirt question. Is qemu-img convert compatible with thin-provisioned LVs as targets ? I wanted to convert a file-based image to a LV image where the file-based image has a capacity much larger than the actual data it contains, so it has a small footprint on disk (either a qcow2 or a raw, but sparse, image). If I use qemu-img convert -O raw ... with a target LV sized to the full capacity of the file-image, all is fine. But if I try use an LV whose virtual size equals the capacity, but its size is smaller (although more than enough for the data) the LV is invariably corrupt. If I try use a thin-provisioned LV pool, and a LV backed by that pool, the LV resulting from qemu-img convert is not corrupt but it uses as much space as the file-image capacity it came from. I'm trying to use the libvirt Python API to manage VirtualBox VMs on Mac OS X 10.8.3. I'm running libvirt 1.0.6 via Homebrew. However, the following trivial Python script: import libvirt conn = libvirt.open('vbox:///session') gives me the following error: libvirt: error : Failed to find user record for uid '32722': Success Traceback (most recent call last): File "ch3vm.py", line 3, in <module> conn = libvirt.open('vbox:///session') File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/libvirt.py", line 236, in open if ret is None:raise libvirtError('virConnectOpen() failed') libvirt.libvirtError: Failed to find user record for uid '32722': Success I have no idea where that uid 32722 is coming from -- it's not the uid of my user account, any of my VirtualBox files, or anything else that I'm aware of. Anyone have any idea what's going on here?

Hi, I am using the libvirt 1.0.6 with the patch applied: http://libvirt.org/git/?p=libvirt.git;a=commitdiff;h=371c155 The problem I encountered is, with virsh comand 'nodedev-create /home/kvm/vHBA.xml', the vHBA can be generated as expected on the host, but error msg will show in the virsh shell: libvirt: Node Device Driver error : Node device not found I try to find the reason with gdb, and found that the 'nodedev-create' command will call virNetClientIOEventLoop() function of the remote driver, in this function, code will wait on: repoll: ret = poll(fds, ARRAY_CARDINALITY(fds), timeout); after about 50s, poll() returns, but the replied msg->header.status=VIR_NET_ERROR. I am not familiar with the rpc call in the remote driver, does anybody here can give some clues? BRs, Dennis

[libvirt-users] snapshot-create-as for a single disk not all disks

Hi everyone! Is there any way to create snaphot for a single disk of a virtual machine. As I konw, "virsh snapshot-create-as domain_name snapshot_name --disk-only" traverses all block devices to create snapshot. However I don't want to create snapshot except for root partition. The version of qemu and libvirt I used is as follows: qemu-1.4.2 and libvrit-0.10.2 I meet an error when I delete the snapshot which is created by "snapshot-create-as" command. whether or not qemu(1.4.2) and libvirt(0.10.2) don't support the function currently. Look forward to your help!

Hi, I am trying to install xen and provide libvrit support to it but while installing at some point of time it tries to connect to GIT repository and creates a clone but I am behind firewall and it is getting timed out.... :( I am pasting a screenshot below. Hi, I've got a small problem using libvirt-1.0.5.1 (with the latest patch in the v1.0.5-maint branch on git added). I'm using slackware64-14.0 but the situation is exactly the same described on a debian bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=707201 When trying to start a domain I got error: Failed to start domain debian-wheezy-xfce error: Unable to initialize /machine cgroup: Invalid argument with this in libvirtd.log virCgroupDetect:373 : Failed to detect mounts for /machine qemuInitCgroup:425 : Unable to initialize /machine cgroup: Invalid argument and the error goes away if I unmount /sys/fs/cgroup. Reverting to 1.0.4 fixes this, but this exposes another thing that I report even if I'm not sure it's an error: if I create a domain with 1.0.5.1 (I use the latest virt-manager to do this), in the xml of the domain there's a line that doesn't seem to have the close tag <controller type='pci' index='0' model='pci-root'/> If I revert to 1.0.4 the domain with this line in the xml doesn't even get listed between the available domains and I got this in libvirtd.log virDomainControllerDefParseXML:4838 : internal error Unknown controller type 'pci' deleting the interested line make it available again. Please let me know if you need further informations on the matters. Matteo

No it was not booted with xen kernel. Actually I tried booting it with xen kernel but I am getting a message saying Error No 15 : File not found. I tried editing the grub entry and noticed that there are 3 entries: 1) kernel /boot/xen.gz vga= mode-0x345 2) module /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.13-0.27-xen....... 3) module /boot/initrd-3.0.13-0.27-xen And in /boot i listed down the files, only xen.gz is there. Rest of the 2 files are not there (pasted the screenshot below). Even at one site it was given to remove /boot from the path but that also din't work. My current machine setup it dual-boot, so I can boot Windows 7 from the first partition (/dev/sda1) using a grub boot menu. However, when I start the Windows 7 VM, I just get "Booting from Hard Disk" in the virt-manager console. What could be the problem? Lastly: /def/sda1 in a boot partition, but the rest of Windows is installed on /dev/sda2, but this partition is not marked bootable. thanks Roland

Hi, When I want to use NPIV for a FC HBA in my Linux machine, I got the below error msg in virsh: virsh # nodedev-create /home/kvm/vHBA.xml error: Failed to create node device from /home/kvm/vHBA.xml error: internal error Parent device scsi_host20 is not capable of vport operations I checked the /sys/class folder for my HBA device that I want to use its NPIV feature, it's there: /sys/class/fc_host/host20/vport_create I can create a vHBA by using "echo 'xxxx:xxxx' > ./vport_create", a new fc host will be created after that. But I can't find any FC host with: #virsh nodedev-list --cap fc_host SCSI hosts can be found for above "nodedev-list --cap scsi_host". The libvirt I am working on is based ver 1.0.5, I checked the code and found below function is seems related with this issue: src/util/virutil.c: int virIsCapableVport(const char *sysfs_prefix, int host) This function looks up if there is "vport_create" file under /sys/class/fc_host/host20, as the way to decide if a HBA device is capable of vport operation. But seems this file is not compiled and virsh doesn't call it in my source code environment... is there any tips ? BRs, Dennis

Hey All, I'm just wondering whether this is what caused my server to crash. Started last night in NZ land. Jun 20 19:22:11 elm dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (tried to use disallowed plaintext auth): user=<>, rip=attackerip, lip=10.0.0.3, session=<0C8LzpDfZQDINsQC> occasionally get Jun 20 19:22:52 elm dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts in 1 secs): user=<>, rip=attackerip, lip=10.0.0.3, session=<bHdz0JDfpwDINsQC> or in 0 secs last at Jun 20 19:26:24 elm dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (tried to use disallowed plaintext auth): user=<>, rip=attackerip, lip=10.0.0.3, session=<1MUR3ZDfcwDINsQC> and a minute later the server lost contact to the world. When I checked a bit later, the underlying host machine (dovecot runs on a VM (KVM)) had been powered off. Now, here in NZ land, there was also a crazy storm last night, and lots of brown outs. There could potentially of been a surge that killed it, but the UPS was still running fine when I started it again. The "attack" lasted around 4 minutes, in which there was 1161 lines in the log for a single attacker ip, and no other similar logs previously. Would this be enough to kill not only the VM running dovecot, but the underlying host machine? All up to date with patches, running debian stable (wheezy). dovecot-core debian package version 1:2.1.7-7 dovecot version 2.1.7 I notice there is a version 2.2.3 out, but not in debian yet. Could this fix this issue? I don't particularly want to have it happen again :D. The host is running debian oldstable (squeeze), so could update more. libvirt0 debian package version 0.8.3-5+squeeze5 libvirt version 0.8.3 I notice there is a version 1.0.6 out (debian stable only has 0.9.12-11+deb7u1, which is 0.9.12), would either of these versions fix an issue like this? qemu-kvm debian package version 0.12.5+dfsg-5+squeeze10 kernel is 2.6.32-5-amd64 Any thoughts? I'm running Ubuntu desktop 12.10 with libvirt and virt-manager (gui). I have been led to believe that it is possible to use and existing partition as the disk storage volume for a virtual machine. The windows partition is /dev/sda2, but if I use fs: Pre-formatted Block Device I can select the partion. What I can't figure out is how to tell the vitual machine to use this volume. I tried with virt-manager, but the only options I have are * Local media * Network install * Network Boot * Import Existing Disk Image How can I do this? regards Roland Giesler

I have an issue setting a persistent kernel option on a libvirt net device since that device does not exist early enough during the boot of the KVM host. I am using the 127.0.0.0 local net for cluster communication between the KVM host and its guests as well as between KVM guests. In order to use addresses on the 127.0.0.0/8 network, which is reserved for local communication, two configuration changes must be made after the system is rebooted. First the default route of 127.0.0.1/0 to the loopback device must be deleted which I did by adding an "ip route delete" command to the ifcfg-br0 file that starts the bridged network that is used by the KVM guests. The second configuration change is where I am having trouble. For the second change I need to set the kernel boolean net.ipv4.conf.pvt0.route_localnet to be true to allow routing of the 127.0.0.0/8 on the libvirt net device that I have configured to use addresses on the 127.0.0.0/8 network. Normally I would do this by adding "net.ipv4.conf.pvt0.route_localnet = 1" to /etc/sysctl.conf but this does not work because the libvirt pvt0 device does not exist when the settings in the /etc/sysctl.conf are done. My question is where can I add the command "/sbin/sysctl -w net.ipv4.conf.pvt0.route_localnet=1" to the start-up files so the command is run after the libvirt device pvt0 has been autostarted? I am running on RHEL 6.4 x86_64. --jim

Is it possible to use virsh to set the cpuset attribute of the CPU Allocation element in a domain ? <domain> ... <vcpu placement='static' cpuset="1-4,^3,6" current="1">2</vcpu> ... </domain> I have seen that virsh vcpupin and virsh emulatorpin can be used to query and set the cpusets of the <vcpupin> and <emulatorpin> children elements of <cputune> which override the cpuset of <vcpu>. If i did not have to pin to different PCPUs, I would execute just one command for the whole domain rather than one command per VCPU + one per the emulator threads. Hello all, I had Debian 6.0.6 and libvirt 0.8.3 but it is was default installed without ESXi support (sudo apt-get install libvirt-bin). And it was working. Hi all! I'm trying virt-manager on Debian Wheezy and I noticed that it has already defined a "default" pool. But if I run: # /etc/init.d/libvirt-bin restart I lose the definition of the pools. Hello. Is it possible to start container via libvirt_lxc without mounting /sys inside container? When I start container via lxc-start and do not add mount point to config, then /sys inside container is empty. When I do it via virsh -c lxc:// container.xml, then /sys contains sysfs of the host and /sys on host becomes remounting read-only. Am I doing something wrong or is this feature of libvirt_lxc? I am running some qemu-kvm virtual machines via libvirt using Ceph RBD as the back-end storage. Today I was testing an update to libvirt-1.0.6 on one of my hosts and discovered that it includes this change: [libvirt] [PATCH] Forbid use of ':' in RBD pool names ...People are known to be abusing the lack of escaping in current libvirt to pass arbitrary args to QEMU. I am one of those people--I have been storing colon-separated arguments in my disk source 'name' attribute to control the RBD cache settings on a per-volume basis. Under libvirt-1.0.6 such VM's refuse to start: error: Failed to start domain foo error: unsupported configuration: ':' not allowed in RBD source volume name 'mypool/foo:rbd_cache_size=268435456:rbd_cache_max_dirty=134217728:rbd_cache_target_dirty=33554432:rbd_cache_max_dirty_age=5' So my question is how do I control the cache settings now? Hi, We know that there is a command "setvcpus" in virsh used to "change number of virtual CPUs", now we just have the need to change vcpu count dynamically for a running VM, so I tried this command (the vcpu count is 2 in the VM xml file), below is the result: virsh # setvcpus 3 --count 4 error: invalid argument: requested vcpus is greater than max allowable vcpus for the domain: 4 > 2 virsh # setvcpus 3 --count 1 error: Operation not supported: qemu didn't unplug the vCPUs properly So I tried another way: log into the running VM, and "echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online", after that I can find only one processor in the vm through '/proc/cpuinfo', but in virsh, the vcpuinfo still shows: virsh # vcpuinfo 3 VCPU: 0 CPU: 0 State: running CPU time: 13.5s CPU Affinity: yyyy VCPU: 1 CPU: 1 State: running CPU time: 6.9s CPU Affinity: yyyy So the question is: is there any method I can't find yet to change the vcpu count of a running vm dynamically?
