Hi, I'm having some trouble to get libvirt to show the correct power state of my virtual machines. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 + Xen 4.1.1 + libvirt 0.8.8. virsh list --all only shows turned off machines registered in xend. If I turn them on, they just "disappear", and when I start machines directly from xml, they just doesn't appear at all. Libvirt is correctly connecting to xen as I can use the other commands fine, just the list option doesn't seem to work at all. A lot of people in the security community, myself included, are interested in memory forensics these days. Virtualization is a natural fit with memory forensics because it allows one to get access to a guest's memory without having to introduce any extra software into the guest or otherwise interfere with it. Incident responders are particularly interested in getting memory dumps from systems they're investigating. Virsh has "save" and "dump" commands for storing the state of a guest to a file on disk, but memory of KVM guests doesn't get saved in the "standard" input format for memory forensics tools, which is a raw physical memory image. (This is what you'd get via the classical "dd /dev/mem" approach or the contemporary equivalent using the crash driver; and VMware Server and Workstation produce .vmem files, which are such raw physical memory images, when a guest is paused or snapshotted.) In order to analyze the memory of Libvirt/KVM guests with my Linux memory forensics software, Second Look, I've created a tool for converting Libvirt-QEMU-save files (output of virsh save command) or QEMU-savevm files (output of virsh dump command) to raw physical memory images. I've got a basic working capability, though I'm still tracking down some problems with a guest allocated 8GB RAM--not all the memory seems to be present in the save or dump file. And I haven't tested very extensively yet, version support is limited to what I myself am currently running, etc. I'd like to know if this is a capability that others are interested in. Is this something that would be of interest to the Libvirt project if I were to contribute the code, or to the KVM project, or do you think it best exists as a separate project? I've also got a proof-of-concept tool for converting hibernate images to raw physical memory images. Perhaps a collection of tools for converting various memory dump formats would be a good project. Anyone else interested in this kind of stuff? As an author of commercial memory forensics software I've got a vested interest in availability of good memory acquisition capabilities. But there are a number of people working on FOSS Linux memory analysis tools, too... Andrew

Sometimes domains aren't destroyed but libvirt reports no error at all. If there is only one domain, no problem occurs at all. I also tried the same code (ie with multiple domains) but with only one thread and it works well. Hi, I am getting following 'qemu: could not load kernel' error while trying to create a new VM using virt-install or virt-manager. The software versions are as follows: CentOS 6.2, Libvirt 0.9.4, qemu-kvm 2:0.12.1.2-2.209.el6_2.1. The qemu.conf has disabled dynamic_ownership setting. The VM instantiation has worked fine before when dynamic_ownership was enabled (default). So is this error related to dynamic ownership being disabled? I appreciate any help on how to debug this error further. Also, is there any documentation on why/when dynamic_ownership setting should be used? Hi all, we have an easy question for you maybe. when we start the virt-manager, and doubleclick an listed virtual machine, we always bei transported to CONSOLE page. Thats very annoying for us. Is there a possibility to set an option, that on doubleclick you are getting the CONSOLE TAB. in 95% we need Console and not Details. thanks for any costructive hints. marko , from cloudy rainy germany

Hi all, I upgraded qemu-kvm and libvirt to the new versions qemu-kvm at : 1.0 libvirt at : git version 0.9.10 I lost the original machines but the xml files were are all present (it is not showing up in virsh list --all) But when I import an xml I get an error: Attached is some information which might be helpful Can someone help please ? [libvirt-users] Virtualizing a an old SuSE system

I'm in the midst of an attempt to convert an old and rather large SuSE server (5 disks) into a virsh loadable VM. Has anyone else dealt with the issues of systems of this sort? I'm at the moment trying to hand construct a machine xml file for it. I managed to create one which would load but not start. I'd appreciate some pointers and can supply whatever info you'd like about what I am trying to do and what the dd'd image of the system disk and other disks are like. Not that they do have LVM's, although the boot should be off a base partition that is not in the LVM.

Dear all: I ust installed Fedora16Fedora16 X86_64 on my new machine, and then I ran the commands as follows(ran as root): yum install qemu-kvm yum install qemu yum install libvirt yum install virt-manager then I started the libvirtd as follow: /etc/init.d/lbvirtd start So , it ran well. However, after a few days , when I ran the command "virt-manager" , it showed as bellow: it seemed that ti cannot connect the hipervisor. Then I did a little test: I ran the conmand "virsh list" , but it didnot work,either. Then I used Python as follows: import libvirt cc = libvirt.open(r'qemu:///system') but it didnot work,either. [libvirt-users] Bug? virGetLastError() returns NULL after virDomainCreate() if Domain running already

Hi, As the subject line indicates, when I'm calling virDomainCreate() to start a defined domain, and that command fails because the domain is already running at that point, virGetLastError() will return NULL, instead of a proper pointer to an error code. Libvirt will, however, print an error to the console: libvir: QEMU error : Requested operation is not valid: domain is already running This looks like a bug to me, and I'm fairly certain that earlier version would return an error code of VIR_ERR_OPERATION_INVALID at that point. Or maybe that was just virDomainDestroy(), and I'm just blindly assuming that virDomainCreate() will work analogously... Anyway, no error code is bad, because I can't tell what happened. This is version 0.9.8. I couldn't find anything about this issue in the changelogs for 0.9.9 and 0.9.10, so I'm assuming the issue has not been addressed since. Guido

Hi All, I have created a 10GB logical volume in iSCSCI target machine. I am abe to mount the volume in my Dom0 . But I am not able to attach the volume to Guest VM I tried "<pool type='iscsi'>"+ "<name>virtvolume</name>"+ "<source>"+ "<host name='192.168.1.1'/>"+ "<device path='"+src+"'/>"+ "</source>"+ "<target>"+ "<path>/dev/disk/by-path</path>"+ "</target>"+ "</pool>" I Could create a storage pool using the above xml. [libvirt-users] lockmanager for use with clvm

Hi, i am setting up a cluster of kvm hypervisors managed with libvirt. The storage pool is on iscsi with clvm. To prevent that a vm is started on more than one hypervisor, I want to use a lockmanager with libvirt. I could only find sanlock as lockmanager, but AFSIK sanlock will not work in my setup as I don't have a shared filesystem. I have dlm running for clvm. Are there lockmanager implementations that use dlm? Or other implementations that can be used in my setup? [libvirt-users] Regarding file vs block devices for the guest

Hi There is a general consensus in regards to use of a block device (exported partition) over a file device (.img or .qcow2) image. It is expected to see a big performance jump in case of a block device. However in my test I have seen it is not always the case. My testbed has Fedora-14.0 as the host and Ubuntu-10.0 as guest running on Intel x86 4 core/8 thread VTX enabled system. I ran file system benchmarks from the guest using iozone and measure throughput as well as CPU utilization. I observed that upto device sizes of 8 GB, file device (.img with ext3 partition) consistently outperformed block device (ext3 partition exported directly to the guest). Is similar anomaly seen by the community too? If not, i.e. block device should always outperform file, which layer should I be looking at to understand what could be happening. Just to make sure, I repeated same test a bunch of times to eliminate noise. As I increased the HDD size, then block device performance drastically improved and consistently performed better than fileIO. In both tests, my guest had 512 MB RAM with 1 vcpu. I ran all 11 iozone test to do performance comparisons. Any pointer/insight would be extremely helpful. Thank you in advance. -- Udayan

[libvirt-users] libvirt doesn't boot kVM, hangs, qemu on 100% CPU

Hi folks, it's been adventurous. Yesterday night I've started debugging this particular issue of why my KVMs don't boot on Ubuntu 11.10. A first hint was apparmor, which seemed to deny access to the LVM partitions I had assigned as disks. After correctly configuring apparmor, or even disabling it the issue was still the same. After a wild goose chase, I decided to update everything, I now have * libvirt 0.9.8 (built from Ubuntu 12.04 sources) * qemu 1.0 (built from Ubuntu 12.04 sources) * SeaBIOS (built from git master: pre-1.6.4-20120221_203841) I even installed sgabios to see what's going on without having to connect with virt-manager every time. So what's going on? What am I trying to do? I'm trying to boot an Ubuntu amd64 VM, which looks pretty much the same as the Ubuntu host, except that I uninstalled libvirt and qemu-kvm, which felt out of place. This I'm trying to accomplish by booting it with the host's kernel and initrd (os/kernel and os/initrd). So much for the starting conditions. Hi Daniel, I got a question about lock manager, if I enable 'sanlock' in qemu.conf and uncomment 'auto_disk_leases = 1' in qemu-sanlock.conf then restart libvirtd service, libvirtd will be dead, I know I should also uncomment 'host_id = 1' in qemu-sanlock.conf, because I enable 'auto_disk_leases'. The question is the libvirtd must die due to a error users configuration? or could we give some warning information instead of libvirtd die? Thanks & Regards, Alex

The error indicates that the server or a proxy in between doesn't handle the Expect header. I assume that the ESXi sever itself is not the problem, because it works for me here. Maybe there is a HTTP proxy between your computer and the ESXi server that returns this 417 error code. This problem is probably related to libvirt sending a dummy Expect header instead of sending no Expect at all. hi, I am a new user of libvirt ,i really appreciate libvirt，and want to use it in my work.I want to use it to conncet to a ESXi server.when I try to connect to the server ,I use the command :virsh -c esx://name@exmaple.com,And I get an 1.error :error: internal error curl_easy_perform() returned an error: Couldn't connect to server (7) : couldn't connect to host so I think maybe the firewall shutdown the 443 for https,so I used command:virsh -c esx://name@example.com/?transport=http And I still get an error like: error: internal error HTTP response code 417 for call to 'RetrieveServiceContent' error: failed to connect to the hypervisor so ,I still can't find the way to connet the server,if you kown how to handle this problem ,i hope you can help me thanks a lot. i will wait for you letter day and night. [libvirt-users] Error deleting a volume

Hello group. This is my first post here so first of all I'd like to greet everybody reading this group. Secondly, I have a problem with libvirt used from a perl script. I would like to undefine a domain and afterwards delete the volume that had been attached to the domain as a disk. The volume is a qcow2 file and is placed in a 'dir' type pool. I succeed in undefining the domain but trying to delete a volume using $vol->delete() crashes the libvirtd. The script catches an exception: libvirt error code: 38, message: server closed connection and the init process echoes an entry to the log: init: libvirt-bin main process (6999) killed by ABRT signal When I try to list volumes afterwards using virsh, I see that not only the volume, but also the pool are missing. Moreover the pool that holds a backing storage for the qcow2 file is also missing. It seems that the delete operation actualy succeeds because the file gets deleted from disk as well. Fortunately the backing storage file is still present on the disk although its pool in virsh disappears. Has anybody come across a similar problem before? Any help is highly appreciated. I am doing an experiment which involves detecting co-resident VMs (testing if 2 VMs are on the same physical machine) on KVM. I have tried using cache covert channel, but this test does not work if the VMs are on different processors within the same host as the caches are not shared then. If I use the tools netperf and iperf to differentiate using network channels, I am not getting clear results. This is because the network is really good (10 Gbps). I believe there are better and more reliable ways for the same. Please suggest some of these. The idea is to find some resource (like memory, disk, etc) that is shared by the VMs and try to run some benchmarks that thrash this resource. Hi! We're struggling to get device detaching to work reliably using Xen. We can reliably use the same code to manage devices using Libvirt+KVM without any problems. We've tested this on Xen with both CD-ROM and USB devices without success. See below for detailed descriptions. Thankful for any help! Using virsh we're able to use "virsh detach-disk deb hdc" to unmount the CD-ROM, but we need to be able to do this using the python API. We cannot find a corresponding call to detach-disk and we therefore have to rely on detach-device instead, right? Are there any flags we can use for detachDeviceFlags() to replicate the functionality of detach-disk? ---- Similarly for USB devices, we can mount them OK but not remove them using the corresponding call to detach-device. Calling detach-disk works, but again we need to find the corresponding call for this function using the python API. Greets, I have to research performance-issues of a W2003-VM within KVM. Right now it's a qcow2-image-file w/ default settings within libvirt (configured by vmm ...) My question: what caching to use? writeback/writethrough/etc ... what to use for data integrity while not getting ultraslow performance? [libvirt-users] QEMU hook on restore

Hi, I'm using libvirt 0.8.3. It looks like to me that when a QEMU domain is restored from save, the hook is called with the "stopped end -" arguments. I've also noticed that the domain description passed to the hook script doesn't contain the network device the host will be attached to (XPath: /domain/devices/interface/target/@dev).
