Hi! I'm comparing the cpu usage of a VM from virDomainGetInfo and the usages returned per-vcpu from virDomainGetVcpus and the totals do not match up. I expect that the cpu usages reported per-vcpu, when summed, should equal the total cpu usage of the domain, but there is quite a large gap between them. Is there something I'm missing? Hi, What is the difference between chroot & pivot_root. They don't seem obvious based on the man pages apart from the below mentioned caveats. 1) Inherited Open file descriptors, have to be explicitly closed. 2) Does not change CWD of the process, which can be overcome by doing a chdir before & after chroot call. Hi, While using libvirt to start a LXC, I am facing an error related to NETNS, specifically related to the VETH device pair creation. The code related to this is present in libvirt/src/lxc/veth.c # ip link add veth0 type veth peer name veth1 Garbage instead of arguments "peer ...". Try "ip link help". # ip -V ip utility, iproute2-ss110629 # uname -r 2.6.32.39 # The devices "veth0" & "veth1" does not exist in /sys/class/net/ But the same command works with iproute2-ss100519 (older version). Is this a known issue in the latest version or am I doing something wrong? Any info in this regard would be useful. -Alphonse

[libvirt-users] Updating librvirt on the STD Distros

All, This is my first time posting, I apologize in advance if it is too much of a "newbie" question I am working on a project with libvirt and want to use some of the features in the 0.9.4 release. The first platform I wanted to test this on is RHEL 5.7. I have d/l libvirt and compiled but have the following questions 1) RHEL 5.7 ships with libvirt version, 0.8.2-22. I am guessing that I can not simple overwrite the existing files with the files from 0.9.4. Is there a way to upgrade to 0.9.4? Do I need to build an rpm so that the version is properly reported in the rpm db? I am also guessing some of the other packages the rely on libvirt may no longer work. In addition, I would imagine RH does not support doing this. To summarize, can the lbivrit on RHEL be upgraded and if so does anyone have any info they can point me to? 2) If there is not a way to update RHEL, is there a different distro CentOS, Ubuntu, Fedora that is a better choice to test my project on? 3) I am also guessing if my project is using API's that are not in 0.8.2-22 but are in 0.9.4., I will not be able to connect remotely to the RHEL server and have them pull the data correctly. For example, I want to use virDomainGetMemoryParameters. Thanks in advance. Keith

That's not an official Fedora13 package, and in later versions of Fedora, spice support is included in the standard qemu-kvm package. It sounds like you either built qemu + a spice patch from source, or found a prebuilt package like that somewhere. I've only used the spice support that is integrated into the qemu-kvm package of Fedora 14 and RHEL (the qemu-kvm in Fedora 13 is too old to have spice support, and Fedora 13 is now officially out of support mode) I would do one of these things: 1) try getting a source tarball for a more recent qemu-kvm release and build/install that on your F13 machine. 2) upgrade to F14 or F15 (if you upgrade to F14, add the virt-preview repo to your yum configuration (just copy http://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/jforbes/virt-preview/fedora-virt-previe… into /etc/yum.repos.d) 3) Decide that you maybe don't *really* need spice support, but that the VNC-based guest displays are adequate for your needs - this will work with the stock qemu-kvm on F13 and is just fine for most uses.

Hello everybody, I am a new user discovering libvirt with KVM software. During my first VM creation, I saw an issue with virsh that I can't understand. I wanted to emulate another CPU than the classical qemu32 using virsh. So I used the virsh capabilites command to detect how is detected my CPU host which is an Intel Xeon E5410 and my problem is that this CPU is detected only with the cpumodel "pentium3". But if use the kvm -cpu ? command, it returns me the following capabilities : $ kvm -cpu ? x86 qemu64 x86 phenom x86 core2duo x86 kvm64 x86 qemu32 x86 coreduo x86 486 x86 pentium x86 pentium2 x86 pentium3 x86 athlon x86 n270 Moreover, if i decide to use the pentium3 cpumodel for my KVM VM, the CentOS freeze during its loading. My libvirt and kvm are the following on a Debian Squeeeze : $ virsh version Compiled against library: libvir 0.8.3 Using library: libvir 0.8.3 Using API: QEMU 0.8.3 Running hypervisor: QEMU 0.12.5 Does anybody already had the same issue or am I doing anything wrong ? Hello, i want to start a guest OS in the server, and use spice to achieve graphical interaction with the guest OS. But when i config the XML file, i was confuse by spice . The graphic node is : <graphics type='spice' port='5990' ><listen type='address' address='127.0.0.1'/></graphics> but is has such error as below : libvir: QEMU error : internal error process exited while connecting to monitor: qemu-spice: -spice port=5990,addr=127.0.0.1,disable-ticketing: Invalid parameter 'addr' parse error: port=5990,addr=127.0.0.1,disable-ticketing What is the meaning of <listen type='address' address='*****'/>, If the localhost IP is A and the spice-server IP is B. what should i set the listen type ? to start the Domain and to achieve graphical interaction with the guest OS.

[libvirt-users] How to dedicate a NIC for VM traffic without assigning it an IP

I am testing out a new server with RHEL6 running KVM. We have a few NICs on the server, one of which we would like to dedicate to network traffic to/from the virtual guests. Is it possible to do this without assigning an IP address to the NIC? We're currently doing something like this with Vmware Server, HP's HPVM for HP-UX/IA, and IBM's PowerVM for AIX. -- albert chin (china(a)thewrittenword.com)

Hi, I have to deploy some Ubuntu machines via pxe/dhcp/tftp/preseed/puppet on a vlan. the switches are configured to add vlan tag to the traffic to/from those machines. To test new configuration, i tried to configure a domain alike it was connected by a port of a managed switch configured in general mode where untag id is not 1. Anybody have already done this ? Can i use openvswitch to do this ? Thank you GV

[libvirt-users] RAID1 over IP?

I asksed about this in November last year but got on response. Anyone have any ideas now? Does anyone here have any experience with using KVM/libvirt with RAID1 over IP/DRBD or other HA solution? I'm trying to figure out the hardware configuration I would need to be able to survive a failure or planned shutdown of any one unit in a virtualization cluster. KVM/libvirt makes moving running VM's from one host to another a no brainer, but I'm trying to figure out the right way to be able to take a the storage backend for maintenance without disrupting the VMs. Right now I'm thinking something like KVM + libvirt + heartbeat/corosync + pacemaker + DBRM on Ubuntu 10.04 with 3 or 4 nodes - 2 hosts, 2 storage, or 1 host, 1 host + storage, 1 storage. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hello, I have been trying to migrate a guest from one host to another. But it is showing this error: virsh --connect qemu+ssh://root@host1/system migrate --live --undefinesource testvm3 qemu+ssh://root@host2/system tcp://host2:48160 error: operation failed: failed to retrieve chardev info in qemu with 'info chardev' I have tried this command from the host1 also but it shows the same error.
