Hi, I'm having some trouble to get libvirt to show the correct power state of my virtual machines. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 + Xen 4.1.1 + libvirt 0.8.8. virsh list --all only shows turned off machines registered in xend. If I turn them on, they just "disappear", and when I start machines directly from xml, they just doesn't appear at all. Libvirt is correctly connecting to xen as I can use the other commands fine, just the list option doesn't seem to work at all. A lot of people in the security community, myself included, are interested in memory forensics these days. Virtualization is a natural fit with memory forensics because it allows one to get access to a guest's memory without having to introduce any extra software into the guest or otherwise interfere with it. Incident responders are particularly interested in getting memory dumps from systems they're investigating. Virsh has "save" and "dump" commands for storing the state of a guest to a file on disk, but memory of KVM guests doesn't get saved in the "standard" input format for memory forensics tools, which is a raw physical memory image. (This is what you'd get via the classical "dd /dev/mem" approach or the contemporary equivalent using the crash driver; and VMware Server and Workstation produce .vmem files, which are such raw physical memory images, when a guest is paused or snapshotted.) In order to analyze the memory of Libvirt/KVM guests with my Linux memory forensics software, Second Look, I've created a tool for converting Libvirt-QEMU-save files (output of virsh save command) or QEMU-savevm files (output of virsh dump command) to raw physical memory images. I've got a basic working capability, though I'm still tracking down some problems with a guest allocated 8GB RAM--not all the memory seems to be present in the save or dump file. And I haven't tested very extensively yet, version support is limited to what I myself am currently running, etc. I'd like to know if this is a capability that others are interested in. Is this something that would be of interest to the Libvirt project if I were to contribute the code, or to the KVM project, or do you think it best exists as a separate project? I've also got a proof-of-concept tool for converting hibernate images to raw physical memory images. Perhaps a collection of tools for converting various memory dump formats would be a good project. Anyone else interested in this kind of stuff? As an author of commercial memory forensics software I've got a vested interest in availability of good memory acquisition capabilities. But there are a number of people working on FOSS Linux memory analysis tools, too... Andrew

In any case, you have the right idea. Libvirt is a control plane for various different virtualization solutions. Arguably the most popular virtualization solution that libvirt can control is KVM, but it can also manage Xen, VMware ESX, LXC (linux containers), UML, etc. Libvirt provides both tools (like virsh and libvirtd) and APIs for interacting with virtual machines. The APIs are things like virDomainShutdown(), virDomainReboot(), etc. The ruby-libvirt package is a thin wrapper around these APIs, so that you can use this functionality from ruby programs. That is, you would be able to do something like: dom.reboot dom.shutdown from your ruby programs. There are also bindings for other languages such as python, php, and perl. [libvirt-users] Hard limit for the cpu usage of a VM

Hi , I was previously using xen and currently moved to KVM. I am using libvirt to manage these VMs. In den's credit scheduler , I had the ability to set a cap on the cpu usage for a VM. But I was not able to find a similar substitute in KVM. I find that we can use cgroups to provide shares for VM but that will be more like weight based and it doesn't set a hard cap for that VM. I tried using cpulimit but I find it inaccurate and we can give values only between 0-100. Thus, I think it cannot support multi core environments. Hey all, I would like to know who / what project is using this binding. So I could learn the API a bit easier than reading through the rough rdoc-based API documentation, which is not really helpful to me, as I do not know the C API yet either. my intention is, to some day, be able to create a Rails web app for managing libvirt hosts (mainly OpenVZ/vserver/LXC and possibly QEMU). I want to use transient disks with libvirt. According to [1], the transient disk feature has been supported since 0.9.5. [libvirt-users] Live migration with 2 nodes and no SAN

I'd like to begin using live migrations with my KVM install, but I do not have any shared storage. I will have 2 identical nodes, with their own local storage. Everything I've read seems to point to DRDB, but I am not finding many resources on how to implement DRDB + qcow2 + KVM. Currently I've been using virt-manager to manage my VMs which are all using qcow2 images. With a setup using DRDB, if I mount the replicated device to /var/lib/libvirt/images, what ensures that each virtual disk is only being used by a single node until migration is needed? I have no experience with HA systems or services. What suggestions or experiences has anyone had with this type of setup? Any advice is welcome. Thanks - Trey

When I delete a volume use vol.delete(0), sometimes it note me that has occur the error: libvirtError: internal error '/sbin/lvremove -f /dev/vg.vmms/lvm-v097222.sqa.cm4' exited with non-zero status 5 and signal 0: Can't remove open logical volume "lvm-v097222.sqa.cm4". then I go to the host and run the command: " sudo lvchange -a n /dev/vg.vmms/lvm-v097222.sqa.cm4" and then the volume could delete use vol.delete(0). But it's not often occur, just once in nearly 8. Hi, all I migrate a vm from source host to the destination host. I am sure every part is ok for migration. 1 Create the image in the destination and change the user and group. 2 Open TCP socket in the destination host. and I migrate in the source host command line. $ virsh migrate --live --copy-storage-all vmubuntu qemu+ssh://destinationHost/system --verbose But I get the error "error: operation failed : failed to retrieve chardev info inqemu with 'info chardev'" In the destination I find in the vmubuntu.log The error is "Migration failed. Exit code tcp:0.0.0.0:49170(-98),exiting." What can I do to solve it ? I do not understand how the error comes. Anyone can help me ? Thanks in advance.

[libvirt-users] Start of libvirtd fails with error "undefined symbol: __virAlloc"

Hello List like described in the topic I have a problem with starting the libvirtd. I'm a complete newbie with libvirtd, today I heard the first time that such a daemon exists after I get the message that our webserver isn't running (a former colleague has installed this system). We have the following configuration: A Ubuntu based host on which our webserver runs within a qemu virtual machine. The following happens: Yesterday the host restarted (at the moment we don't know the reason) and since this restart libvirtd did not start up. How I found that out: When I try to start the virtual machine with "virsh start z-web" I get the error: "Connecting to uri: qemu:///session libvir: Remote error : unable to connect to '/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock': No such file or directory error: failed to connect to the hypervisor" As explained, I'm a total Newbie with libvirtd. So as far as I know, the libvirt-sock is generated by libvirtd when it's running. I don't know the right way how to start libvirtd. I tried it by just typing "libvirtd", but that generates this error: "libvirtd: symbol lookup error: libvirtd: undefined symbol: __virAlloc". I can't find any log-entry that gives me more information about this error. Does anybody can help me with this problem? In which logfiles does libvirtd normaly writes such errormessages? Or what can the problem be? If you need more information about the configuration or something else, I can find that out, if you tell me where ;) Thanks alot for your help! Hi, I would like to use libvirt to manipulate virtual machines of different types (KVM, ESXi etc.) I added dependencies to my project the libvirt and jna jars. trying to execute your example code I am getting a run time exception saying the library cann't be found. it an actual libvirt c library is also required, and needs to be compiled separately? can you please write down all needed steps for using libvirt with java binding? thanks in advance.

Unfortunately I can't offer much advice on why it happens, but increasing log verbosity may help troubleshoot it. These are the relevant lines I use in /etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf log_level = 2 log_filters="2:remote 2:event" log_outputs="2:file:/var/log/libvirt/libvirtd.log" Be careful with level 1 alerts...I generated a 100GB text log in 3 days. Hello, In my system a VM with a given domain name is defined and started. At a certain point I will define and start a new VM, with a different name. I then want to dispose of the old VM and rename the new one to the old one. Unfortunately I didn't find any API to do the last step. Is it possible to change the domain name of a running VM? Hello, I'm new to this mailing list. I have a question on running an LXC instance from libvirt as a non-root user. I saw libvirt can launch a QEMU instance as a non-root user by editing /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf configuration file via the user=$USERNAME and group=$GROUPNAME parameters. But, I could not find such options for LXC. Is there a way to run an LXC instance as a non-root user? If it is not possible, then could I run libivrtd itself as a non-root user? Hi All, I am new to libvirt, i wander how we can achieve below objective, i read through a lot from libvirt.org but couldn't found any thing solid something equivalent to this:- virsh dumpxml dom > /tmp/dom.xml $EDITOR /tmp/dom.xml && virsh define /tmp/dom.xml What i try to achieve is to have one management server that install with libvirt in place then we can use libvirt to connect to other libvirt box to provision the vm-create, vm-delete & capable to vm-modified the CPU,MEM,HDD,boot sequence, vnc password attached & detech network card..on the targeted VM. Currently we do it through editing the xml file which was a bit pain to do so.. Regards, Peter
