Hi! I am new to libvirt. I would like to know where would you make the change to correct this error. I am not sure to add an entry in /etc/libvirt/network/default.xml or not. Could you provide ne with a current link to the documentation that will provide me information to correct this information. [libvirt-users] Is it possible to live migrate guest OS'es between different versions of kvm/qemu-kvm with libvirt?

Hi, I currently have a couple of Debian KVM servers with all a different version of kvm or qemu-kvm. I can live migrate a guest OS from one server to the other just fine, as long as the version of qemu-kvm is the same. However, when I try to migrate a guest to a server running a newer (or older) version of qemu-kvm, I run into problems. I think this is because the xml configuration differs slightly between version. For example, if I try to migrate from a server running qemu-kvm 0.11.0 to one running qemu-kvm 0.12.4, I get the following error: virt01:~# virsh migrate --live testserver qemu+ssh://192.168.1.7/system error: internal error unable to reserve PCI address 0:0:3 When migrating from kvm 85 to qemu-kvm 0.11.0: virt02:~# virsh migrate --live testserver qemu+ssh://192.168.1.2/system error: Unknown failure Migrating one from 0.12.4 to 0.11.0 just completely breaks libvirt, forcing me to kill -9 libvirtd and the kvm instance, etc. I believe this is caused in part because different versions of qemu-kvm need different xml configurations. To run my testserver on 0.12.4 for example, I need to delete the lines with the PCI id's, just to be able to start it. So, is there a way to make this work? Perhaps tell libvirt to not send the config file when doing a live migrate, and use the xml in /etc/libvirt/qemu instead somehow? Thanks in advance, Nils

[libvirt-users] Query regarding Xen_ComputerSystem

Hi, Libvirt provides classes such as Xen_ComputerSystem, Xen_Processor etc., in order to build applications using libvirt-api which can interact with the Xen Hypervisor. I would like to know what are the corresponding classes for the KVM hypervisor, so that I can use libvirt-cim to communicate with the hypervisor. Would it be Kvm_ComputerSystem or Qemu_Computersystem? Any help in this regard would be of great help. Thanking you. Regards Ananth

[libvirt-users] libvirt with multiple users

Hi, I'm trying to set up a virtual machine server for our newly re-founded LUG at my school. The idea is for members to have their own virtual machine that they can learn their way around a Linux system without worry of them hosing the host system or their own computers. At home I use libvirt with my server to manage multiple virtual machines, but the issue I'm running into for this use case is user permissions. As far as I've seen, anyone who has access to the server over ssh and has access to the libvirt server via virt-manager has access to all of the virtual machines. I'd like to find some way for each user to only see their own virtual machine. Is this possible? I've considered setting up VMs myself, and giving them direct access via ssh or VNC, but I'd like them to have access to the console so that they can attach things like CD images to their VMs for reinstalling or changing distros. Is there a way to get libvirt to do what I need here? Thanks much, Zach Tibbitts

Hi, Is virsh able to access the VMX config of a virtual machine running on a esxi host? I would like to take backups of my virtual machine configs and the doku section "Converting from VMware VMX config to domain XML config" (http://libvirt.org/drvesx.html) comes close to this - but does not tell how to get access to the vmx file. [libvirt-users] virConnectOpen question.

Hi, I am using virConnectOpen(const char *uri) to connect to the local hypervisor. When uri is set to "lxc:///", an error gets logged in /var/log/messages about failed connection. But I do not see any error for "xen:///". The machine does not have these drivers installed, and I am using libvirt 0.6.3. My questions are - 1. Why I see error in /var/log/messages for container and not for xen? 2. Is there a way to avoid this error? Can I check for installed drivers before trying to connect? Thanks Sharad Mishra

[libvirt-users] sco 5.0.5 not booting on hard disk

Hello, I am trying to run SCO unix 5.0.5 with KVM. I have created the Virtual Machine with virt-manager. The installation runs correctly, but when the virtual machine reboots from hard disk, i obtain this message : "FATAL: No bootable device." If i run manually the virtual machine without the suboption "boot=on" in the "-drive" option, the virtual machine boots correctly. Why is "boot=on" preventing my VM to boot ? Is there a way to modify the .xml file for this VM to inform libvirt to not add "boot=on" ? Thanks Jean Michault.

Hi, Looking to libvirt source code questions: a) I see virt-mgr or such client invokes libvirt API which inturn connects to libvirtd on host. Is this right ? Further libvirtd invokes qemu driver callbacks which were registered when it comes up using: qemuRegister() API. Is this right ? b) If (a) is true then does is mandate that (i) libvirtd daemon need to be running on host only ? (ii) also libvirtd daemon need to be running before qemu (to register) ? c) what is the call sequence and boot up flow between libvirtd daemon and qemu ? d) can libvirtd process run in a guest ?
