[libvirt-users] SCSI tape drive device

I have a SCSI tape backup unit attached to a kvm host managed by libvirt. Is there a way to expose the SCSI device in libvirt so I could pass the device to a virtual machine and have the virtual machine control the tape backup? Defining the device as a SCSI disk does not appear to work. In this situation, live migration is not an issue. The VM would always be tied to this host.

Hello! I've faced a weird problem. And I totally can't understand how libvirt handles networks. The thing that i need to do is simple. I create a bridge in my ubuntu host, the following config: *iface eth0 inet manual* * * *auto br0* *iface br0 inet dhcp* * bridge_ports eth0* * bridge_stp on* * bridge_maxwait 0* That's OK, and my bridge turns up automatically. But I don't understand why libvirt can't use it, it always want to create bridge on its own. So that when I try to create bridged network with the command: virsh virsh net-create net.xml net.xml contents: * <network>* * <name>virbreth0</name>* * <bridge name='br0' stp='on' delay='0' />* * </network>* I always get error ===> error: Failed to create network from net.xml error: cannot create bridge 'br0': File exists That's pretty obvious that libvirt wants to create bridge on its own. But what should I do in my specific situation. May be there is a workaround. I appreciate any help and ideas... Thanks for your answers. Best regards, Denis Barishev.

Hello List, I run a few VMs via libvirt using '--sdl'. I would like to use qemu parameters -no-quit, -no-frame and -ctrl-grab with libvirt. Does libvirt support a way to use these qemu parameters? Does libvirt provide a way to add these options under <graphics/> in the domain.xml using 'virsh edit domain.xml'? My current <graphics/> is as follows: <graphics type='sdl' display=':0' xauth='/home/admin1/.Xauthority'/> I know I could just create a regular kvm start-up script and include these parameters but I would like to manages all VMs via libvirt & virt-manager.

Hi all, Not sure if this will be useful to anyone. Worse, it's probably not complete or correct, but I thought I would throw this out there for comment. I asked earlier about configuring libvirt for NFSv4 support. I wanted to define NFSv4 pool from xml config, but it's not an option. I decided to hack a bit. Added the following to source code: storage_conf.h(417): enum virStoragePoolFormatFileSystemNet { VIR_STORAGE_POOL_NETFS_AUTO = 0, VIR_STORAGE_POOL_NETFS_NFS, VIR_STORAGE_POOL_NETFS_NFS4, VIR_STORAGE_POOL_NETFS_GLUSTERFS, VIR_STORAGE_POOL_NETFS_CIFS, VIR_STORAGE_POOL_NETFS_LAST, }; storage_conf.c(64): VIR_ENUM_IMPL(virStoragePoolFormatFileSystemNet, VIR_STORAGE_POOL_NETFS_LAST, "auto", "nfs", "nfs4", "glusterfs", "cifs") Compiled libvirt and then created storage pool xml: <pool type="netfs"> <name>pool2</name> <source> <host name="test_filer"/> <dir path="/libvirt"/> <format type="nfs4"/> </source> <target> <path>"/usr/local/var/lib/libvirt/images/nfsds2"</path> </target> </pool> 'Virsh pool-create [above xml]' works, using 'mount -t nfs4'. Usual prologue: we're testing on CentOS 5.5, RHEL subscriptions purchased. Now trying to use virt-v2v to transfer Win2008 Server guest from ESXi host to KVM host. Have enabled SSH on ESXi host, and can connect using esx+ssh://esxhost, but procedure fails because nc isn't found on ESXi. Fair enough. BTW, ESXi looks like a radically cut down RH system (/etc/sysconfig being the give-away)? So, using esx:// connection method which presumably uses TLS ... Connection commands I'm trying to use: virt-v2v -f virt-v2v.conf -ic esx://esxhost/?no_verify=1 -op vm_nfs 'HPTRIM Sandbox' virt-v2v -f virt-v2v.conf -ic esx://esxhost/ -op vm_nfs 'HPTRIM Sandbox' I have eliminated libvirt error messages (all #38) relating to /etc/pki/CA/cacert.pem and /etc/pki/libvirt/private/clientkey.pem by creating those files on KVM host according to info on this page: http://libvirt.org/remote.html#Remote_libvirtd_configuration Now I am down to a simple connection refused error message: virt-v2v: Failed to connect to esx://esxhost/: libvirt error code: 38, message: unable to connect to 'esxhost': Connection refused I have also tried suggestion on webpage above regarding these libvirtd.conf settings and restarted libvirtd: tls_no_verify_certificate = 1 key_file = "" cert_file = "" ca_file = "" crl_file = "" ... But no change. The problem may well be the TLS certificates, PKI isn't one of my strong points. I believe the hostnames in the certificates are correct. Which certificates (if any) should be copied to the ESXi host (client or server)? Should I copy any certificates from /etc/vmware/ssl to the KVM host, if so which certificate (rui.crt or rui.key) and where to? There doesn't appear to be anything resembling an iptables firewall in place on the ESXi host. Anyway, any suggestions on what the problem could be greatly appreciated. I guess ESX driver is not compiled for your libvirt version. [libvirt-users] libvirt fails to autostart on boot

Hi I'm having a problem with libvirt. OS: Ubuntu 10.04 When I installed everything initially it worked properly, I was able to use virtual manager to connect to QEMU and install (and run guest OS). But after I rebooted my box - libvirt is not started even though I can see init script in /etc/init.d/libvirt-bin When I start libvirtd manually it works.. But it's kind of annoying for me to do it manually every time.. Maybe someone may suggest any ideas of how can I debug and fix this issue with libvirt autostart. Thanks a lot.

[libvirt-users] NFS4 + SELinux

All test machines are CentOS 5.5 (RHEL subscriptions purchased). We've had NFS3 storage working fine and decided to try NFS4. We can mount an NFS4 share on our KVM host, but the SELinux file context on the mountpoint directory is magically changed from virt_image_t to nfs_t. Restorecon refuses to change it back. Adding the mount option context=system_u:object_r:virt_image_t on either server or client doesn't help (option not recognised). What could we be doing wrong? Does NFS4 + KVM work? Are there any 'best practices' references around for using NFS4 for KVM storage? Much of the documentation doesn't appear 100% relevant as we're dealing with a dedicated SAN network with one user (root) and 'always on' sharing, so much of the more complicated authentication and autofs stuff just gets in the way. My guess is that such data would be accessible in the same way as with physical machines on a physical network (eg tcpdump?). Mike

The error doesn't influnce the program running forward. e.g. Domain dm1 = conn.domainDefineXML(dumpxml); dm1.create(); int id; id = dm1.getID(); System.out.println(id); dm1.undefine(); You will get the domain ID.. [libvirt-users] bootloader_args element

I am trying to set the hostname of VMs at boot time and banging my head against the wall. I am using virsh create xen-config.xml to boot a Scientific Linux 5.5 image. I have gone through the libvirt domain xml format at http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementsResources and I don't see anywhere to set the hostname in there. I am using pygrub for the bootloader and noticed the "bootloader_args" element. Can I pass an argument to the kernel at boot to set the hostname? Can I pass anything to the kernel at boot time? Nothing I have tried seems to work. I have tried sifting through the pygrub code (for lack of documentation) and no luck yet. I think my challenge is with pygrub but any help would be appreciated. I have also posted this at http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-users/2010-10/msg00143.html and http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-virtualization-90/setting-hos… but still waiting... When I statically link into a C program it works fine, however. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? HI, I have a small problem with libvirt / qemu. I have created a guest and when I start it from the command-line the guests starts OK, but when I start the guest through libvirt with "virsh start" I get "Booting from Hard Disk... We have the following test environment: 2 x CentOS 5.5 KVM virtual hosts 2 x CentOS 5.5 network storage boxes with NFS shares on LVs on DRBD (primary/secondary, no HA, just replication). We have installed both CentOS and Win7 guests which live migrate almost instantly between hosts using Virt Manager (or virsh migrate). The problem is that the guests does not retain their running state after migration, but instead arrive on the new host in "reboot after unclean shutdown" state. The migrated machines also lose IP connectivity (static IP) upon migration to new host, but regain it on migration back to original host. So, live migration in this case isn't producing the expected results (a running, usable guest). Same results using "migrate offline" option and pausing machines before migration. I converted a system disk from a virtualbox VM and added to the config on a qemu VM. All seems well until I try to mount it. The virtual machine shows data for the disk image using commands like: pvs lvs lvdisplay xena-1 but there is no /dev/xena-1/root to be mounted. I also cannot seem to figure out whether the lvm related modules are available for the virtual machine kernel. Has anyone else tried playing this game?

Does anyone know of a way to parse the libvirt XML into usable python data structures? Ideally, it would be something like foo['domain']['devices']['bridge'][0]['target'] or something of the sort. What I'm looking to accomplish is to figure out which tap interface goes with a specific domain. I'm not keen on parsing XML to get that mapping, is there a better way to do it without parsing XML?
