Hi,all,i am using libvirt to manage my vm,in these days i am testing the libvirt snapshot ,but meet some problem: the snapshot was created from this command: snapshot-create-as win7 --disk-only --diskspec vda,snapshot=external --diskspec hda,snapshot=no but when i tried to revert from the snapshot which created from the above command ,i got error below: virsh # snapshot-revert win7 1338041515 --force error: unsupported configuration: revert to external disk snapshot not supported yet version: virsh # version Compiled against library: libvir 0.9.4 Using library: libvir 0.9.4 Using API: QEMU 0.9.4 Running hypervisor: QEMU 1.0.93

hi, i am using libvirt-1.2.0 which is installed from source. Which i am using to launch instance on xen. its working fine when i am launching vm from the root user. But i am entered as another user means its throwing the error. Actually, I've installed a recent version of libvirt and qemu from Jessie, using wheezy-backports. $ virsh version Compiled against library: libvirt 1.2.1 Using library: libvirt 1.2.1 Using API: QEMU 1.2.1 Running hypervisor: QEMU 1.7.0 I'm trying to configure a macvtap interface like this: <interface type='direct'> <mac address='52:54:00:7b:05:cd'/> <source dev='eth1' mode='passthrough'/> <model type='rtl8139'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x08' function='0x0'/> </interface> The interface eth1 is used exclusively by this VM, so as far as I understand, mode 'passthrough' is enough since I'd like to "plug" the VM straight onto a public static IP. Hi all I have a very weird case of pci passthrough. I have a machine with 7 network interfaces, all of them intel. Four of them are on one quad giga ethernet device. If I manually unbind the devices and allow qemu to use them, with intel IOMMU working, everything works like a charm. [libvirt-users] Looks like blockpull does not accept a subset of the entire chain of backing files

Hello If I'm not terribly mistaken, looks like libvirt 1.2.1 does not provide ability of merging only a subset of the entire chain of backing files. So, if I have a chain like this: root <- a <-b <- c <- d <- active ... and I'd like to obtain a chain like this: root <- c <- d <- active ... looks like it's not supported, since I'm trying the command / //virsh blockpull domain --path /path/to/c --bandwidth 30 --base /path/to/root// (1) / ... but it complains because /--path /path/to/c/ is not recognized, since only /--path /path/to/active/ is acceptable: / //virsh blockpull domain --path /path/to/active --bandwidth 30 --base /path/to/root// (2) / So, command (1) fails but command (2) succeeds. The point is: How could I obtain the results I'm trying to achieve via command (1) ? I'm new to libvirt, but the article below made me think that what I'm trying to do would be possible: http://kashyapc.fedorapeople.org/virt/lc-2012/snapshots-handout.html ( see section on /blockpull/ ) Thoughts? [libvirt-users] Dynamically setting permanent memory libvirt-lxc

I'm trying to permanently change memory allocation for a libvirt-lxc domain. So far I tried changing memory in memory.limit_in_bytes under /cgroup/memory/libvirt/lxc/<container>/. This didn't help. It appears that libvirt is not reading changes in cgroup. My requirements are 1) Be able to dynamically change memory of a LXC domain without reboot 2) The memory change must survive LXC domain reboot. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I hope this question isn't considered too off topic for this list, I am trying to reach the libvirt-sandbox developers, but I could not find a libvirt-sandbox specific mailing list, and it seemed to me that libvirt-sandbox was a part of libvirt itself. I am trying to port libvirt-sandbox to run on a CentOS 6.5 system. This wasn't too hard but, I had to do the following: I have used the CentOS repo addon ElRepo to upgrade the kernel to 3.10.28. CentOS normally runs a 2.6.32 kernel. I upgraded glib2 from 2.36 to 2.38.2. I did this by building 2.38.2 from source and installing it into /usr/local. Thus, the 2.36 version still exists in /lib64 and the normal CentOS applications use this version. I built libvirt 1.2.1 from source and installed it into /usr/local. I used: ./configure --with-lxc --with-selinux --with-secdriver-selinux --prefix=/usr/local I built libvirt-glib 0.1.7 from source and installed it into /usr/local. I used: PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig ./configure --prefix=/usr/local I build libvirt-sandbox 0.5.1 from source and installed it into /usr/local. I used: PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig ./configure As a test, I am able to run the libvirt lxc helloworld example: [root@scwnet1 lxc_helloworld]# virsh -c lxc:/// define helloworld.xml Hi there I’m not quite proficient with libvirt yet, and have been using it so far primarily to manage lxc containers I was hoping to find a means to configure the set of capabilities that guests should drop, but came across a few web pages suggesting these were set in stone in the code is this correct, or is there a means to tweak this set from the host via the xml config or a virsh command ? any hint / pointer to documentation in this respect would be most appreciated — Thierry

[libvirt-users] Problems with pmsuspend/wakeup

Hi, I've migrated a Windows7 vm from F17 to F20 and it appears to be working okay. Apparently when it's left idle for some period, it automatically goes into a pmsuspend state, and I'm unable to wake it. I've figured out the virsh dompmwakeup command, which then virsh shows it's running, but the vm is still unresponsive. It doesn't respond to ping and the display is just black when accessing it through virt-manager. Is there something I need to do in the guest for it to wake up properly? How can I just prevent it from ever suspending in the first place? Thanks, Alex

Hello, I have a setup of virtual machines and wherein my virtual switch (OVS) takes care of switching locally and it uses the network for talking to VM's outside the server (like a VEB scenario I guess). I want Netlink messages to be sent to LLDPAD. I understand that i had to modify the XML files and start the VM. But, i see from the XML that it supports only VEPA, not VEB. But, irrespective of VEB or VEPA, those VM information should be known to the upstream switch through VDP. 802.1QBG seem to support this (both VEPA and VEB) http://www.ieee802.org/1/files/private/bg-drafts/d2/802-1qbg-d2-2.pdf But, for VEB, no net link messages are sent by libvirt. Why is that? Oops! I blame Microsoft. I use Hotmail and am very, very unhappy that MS bought them out which leaves me stuck with Outlook, which sucks. I've always just hit reply in the past and it's worked. Now I'm going to have to be careful to make sure my replies go where I expect them. Thank you very much for the information. I was really hoping to consolidate systems but that apparently won't happen in the near future. So that means I'll be focusing my efforts on getting my Spacewalk server updated and then upgrading from F18 to F20 or 21. Yep, I was very aware of F18 dropping and thankful for the one brief delay. I'll be taking a look at it again once I upgrade to the current Fedora. Alex Williamson gave a talk at this year's KVM Forum (in October) about the difficulties of making VGA passthrough work, and it was truly frightening; there are just too many strange, undocumented backdoors in the devices that are required by the drivers for proper operation. In my mind this whole area just has too great of a likelihood of total failure without possibility of making it work in a reasonable time frame. To answer your question: I'm running Fedora 18. F18 was definitely one of the releases that was broken wrt PCI passthrough requiring qemu to be run as root. I don't recall if the kernel guys ever fixed it in that version or not. I pestered them about it for months, then finally gave up. BTW, you know that F18 has just gone end-of-life, right? This means no more updates of any type, even security updates. You can actually upgrade your F18 machine to F19, and F19 to F20, using the "fedup" package (I haven't tried using fedup to go directly from F18 to F20, but I suppose you could look into it). *A lot* has changed in virtualization in the last year, and as a bonus, you'll be covered for security fixes for another year. Is there a place where I can follow updates and see PCI pass-through mature so I'll know when next to try? Well, you could try the qemu-devel mailing list, but it's pretty high traffic, and very few of the messages would be on this particular topic. That *is* the place where any discussion would take place, though. Thank you, again, for your help! BTW, it's best to keep all messages on the list rather than private replies. That way someone else with better information may reply (and people very often get busy and disappear for several days/weeks at a time, so it's better to not rely on a response from a single person)

Hi, I've read some docs, and have some ideas, but before I'll go any further, I'd like to get confirmation if I'm understanding it right. Let's assume that on my host I want to have 5 different guests, but they shouldn't be able to communicate with each other. Is the solution to it addition of 5 separate "networks" in libvirt, and then connecting each guest to its own "network"? Looks sensible, but perhaps I'm overlooking something. Dear all, I have a thirty-party PCIe card in my host which can work properly in native mode. I wonder if this card can be shared by multiple containers. As far as the network interface is concerned, too many efforts have been made for it. Two dedicated cgroup resource schedulers/subsystem(net_cls, net_prio) have been provided at the kernel level, and libvirt has also done a lot of work on virtual networking to enable network interface sharing between containers. As it's difficult for me to implement all these things that have been done for network interface, I should find other way to enable sharing of this card. Do you have any idea? I'm trying to pass-through my VGA card to a guest session. I found: http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/How_to_assign_devices_with_VT-d_in_KVM - which is very frustrating because there's no date on the documentation. I suspect it's old. It does clearly say that you must have VT-d support for pci pass-through. It then goes on to say "Some work towards allowing this ["software pass-through"] were done, but the code never made it into KVM". If this is old is there now support for PCI pass-through on hardware that doesn't support VT-d? According to http://libvirt.org/hvsupport.html , at present, setvcpus(virDomainSetVcpus) and vcpupin (virDomainGetVcpuPinInfo) are not supported by lxc driver. [libvirt-users] Yet another disk I/O performance issue

Hi all, I'm running a VM using libvirt+KVM and I have a disk performance issue. The host is the following: 4 cores Intel Xeon 5140(a)2.33 GHz, 16 GB of RAM, SATA HDD, OS Debian Wheezy, libvirt 0.9.12-11, QEMU-KVM 1.1.2+dfsg-2. The guest: 1 CPU, 2 GB RAM running Debian 7.0, image in compressed qcow2 format. When I try do run "dd if=/dev/zero of=io.test bs=32768k count=40" I get around 500 MB/s on bare metal, while only around 30 MB/s inside the VM. I'm trying to get something more out of the virtualization layer, I hope that there's room for improvement. I'm using virtio, I aready set cache='none' and io='native' in the domain definition. Both host and guest are using deadline as I/O scheduler. The VM uses an ext4 filesystem, while the image is saved on an ext3 disk. I mounted the host and guest filesystems specifying nodiratime and noatime options. Even if I convert the image to raw format nothing changes. I didn't mess with iotune nor blockio. Is there something that I overlooked or any other suggestion? Thanks in advance for your help. I need that the virtual machine keep asking for dhcp (network reboot) many times, until dhcp is ready and can start the virtual machine with a valid ip. How can I configure that in the xml file? I have been running a lab using libvirt under Debian Wheezy (libvirt 0.9.12.3-1, qemu-kvm 1.1.2+dfsg-6, virt-manager 0.9.1-4). There are a number of machines as front-end servers and an nbd shared storage backend. When I live-migrate a domain from one machine to another, normally I observe that afterwards the domain remains on the source host (but in "shutdown" state), as well as on the target host (in "running" state). But occasionally I have observed the domain being removed from the source host. The trouble with the domain remaining on the source host is that it is all too easy to double-click on the shutdown domain in virt-manager and start it there accidentally, in addition to the copy on the target host - resulting in disaster. (I know this can be prevented using the sanlock plugin) Furthermore, there could be stale copies of the XML lying around on some machines where the domain had been running at some point in the past. My question is, what is the expected behaviour? Is not removing the domain definition from the source host a bug? Has this been changed in a newer version of libvirt? Thanks, Brian.

Hi guys. These days I'm doing research on SR-IOV & Live migration. As we all know there is big problem that SR-IOV & Live migration can not exist at the same time. I heard that KVM + SRIOV + MacVtap can solve this problem. So I want to try. We will get to them in a minute however we first must address kvm and nfs. NFS:  Create a storage area, where both HV1, and HV2 can access it. There are several methods available for this (FCOE/ISCSI/NFS). For this write-up use nfs. Configure NFS:  Create a directory on nfs.vtt.priv where you want your storage to be. In this case used /home/vmstorage  Edit /etc/exports and add the following /home/vmstorage 172.0.0.0/1(rw,no_root_squash,sync)  Now to /etc/sysconfig/nfs Uncomment RPCNFSDARGS=”-N 4” This will disable nfs v4. If you don’t do this you will have issues with not being able to access the share from within VirtManager.  Add all three machines ip addresses to each machines /hosts file. Then click on finish.  We will configure network after we make sure migration between the two servers works properly.  Now go ahead and install the operating system as you would normally. I haven't been able to find any examples of using blockcopy with iSCSI compiled into QEMU.

Hi, I'm trying to build an active/active virtualization cluster using a Ceph RBD as backing for each libvirt-managed LXC. I know live migration for LXC isn't yet possible, but I'd like to build my infrastructure as if it were. That is, I would like to be sure proper locking is in place for live migrations to someday take place. In other words, I'm building things as if I were using KVM and live migration via libvirt. I've been looking at corosync, pacemaker, virtlock, sanlock, gfs2, ocfs2, glusterfs, cephfs, ceph RBD and other solutions. I admit that I'm quite confused. If oVirt, with its embedded GlusterFS and its planned self-hosted engine option, supported LXC, I'd use that. However the stars have not yet aligned for that. It seems that the most elegant and scalable approach may be to utilize Ceph's RBD with its native locking mechanism plus corosync and pacemaker for fencing, for a number of reasons out of scope for this email. *My question now is in regards to proper locking. Please see the following links. Hello everyone, Can somebody point where I can find the code where libvirt makes the decision to complete a live migration? I mean, at some point syncronising the VM state, it has to decide that the delta left to be migrate is low enough to achieve downtime 0, so libvirt finishes the migration. This "low enough" must be defined somewhere in the code, but I am unable to find it. Thank you very much.

Hi, First of all, I hope it's not a big problem - I'm running on Debian, not Redhat. To my problem: I'm starting to learn virtualization, libvirt, and decided to create some test machine. I did it with: virt-install --name debian-test \ --os-type=linux \ --os-variant=debianwheezy \ --cdrom /media/media/software/iso/debian-testing-amd64-netinst-2014-01-16.iso \ --graphics vnc,listen=0.0.0.0,port=20001 \ --disk pool=default,format=raw,size=20 \ --ram 2048 \ --vcpus=2 \ --network bridge=virbr0 \ --hvm \ --virt-type=kvm Machine starts, but domdisplay shows: =# virsh domdisplay debian-test vnc://localhost:14101 When I tried setting it with --grpahics=vnc,...port=40001, I got it to listen on port 34101 (which is weird anyway, but at least I can change it). But whatever I do - I can't make it to listen on 0.0.0.0. I know I can use ssh port forwarding to get to this VNC, but I would very much prefer to be able to set VNC listen to 0.0.0.0 for at least some of my test domains. What am I doing wrong? Dear all I allocate only one vcpu for the container by the following statement, that is, I want to pin the vcpu to physical core "2". <vcpu placement='static' cpuset="2" >1</vcpu> My host has 4 physical cores. Before test, all the 4 cores are idle. After I run 4 processes in the container, I found all the 4 cores in the host are 100% used. That is, the container is pinned to all the available physical CPUs. This is not what I want. My libvirt version is 1.0.3. Although "vcpupin" element also can be used to pin vcpu, according to http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html , "vcpupin" element is not supported by lxc driver. I was using the below construct, however it is no longer working for me in recent versions of libvirt (libvirt 1.0.2 with qemu-kvm 1.4.0). Good morning, I'm using libvirtd on Gentoo. This is libvirt version: 1.1.3.1 I have trouble starting a VM using virsh start $vm. I do this as root, because as non-root user it did not work at all (especially it failed attaching to the networks). So, when I run the command (with sudo), I get the following error in libvirtd.log: 2014-01-15 07:51:00.423+0000: 16158: warning : qemuDomainObjTaint:1573 : Domain id=5 name='vader' uuid=f5b8c05b-9c7a-3211-49b9-2bd635f7e2aa is tainted: high-privileges 2014-01-15 07:51:00.428+0000: 16158: error : virDBusCallMethod:1173 : Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1 At the same time I get an error in /var/log/messages which seems related: Jan 15 07:51:00 dbus[15845]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.machine1' (using servicehelper) Jan 15 07:51:00 dbus[15845]: [system] Activated service 'org.freedesktop.machine1' failed: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1 Anyone ever seen this issue? I have no idea where to look for errors because the message don't really tell me much. I have tried to execute the qemu-kvm command on the command line directly and that worked immediately. [libvirt-users] Best practice for custom iptables rules

Hi, I'm using libvirt to manage some VMs on a CentOS host, and I need some custom iptables rules to always be in place for some communications to happen, e.g. between the VMs and the outside world in both directions. Some of these rules need to be at the top of the iptables chain, otherwise the default rules added by libvirt would block the communications I need. So I cannot just add the rules in /etc/sysconfig/iptables, because libvirt adds its own rules _before_ the rules contained in this config file. I was looking at filters, but maybe not every rule can be made into a filter? Specifically, I need a rule for the POSTROUTING chain in the "nat" table. Can it be added through filters? Also, regarding the "iptables restart problem" described in the last paragraph at <http://libvirt.org/firewall.html>, is there really no acceptable way to make libvirt add its rules back automatically upon iptables/network restart? Hi everyone, Using the QEMU hypervisor, when a live disk snapshot is requested through libvirt, the request can fail if the underyling qemu binary lacks the snapshotting support. In python, we have something like libvirtError: Operation not supported: live disk snapshot not supported with this QEMU binary I'd like to detect ahead of time if the underlying QEMU can or cannot do snapshotting, and disable right from the start the snapshotting support in my application, avoiding to throw errors to the user. After reading from the docs, it seems that libvirt doesn't reports yet this information about the hypervisor in the capabilities XML: http://libvirt.org/formatcaps.html a quick test against libvirt 1.1.3 (qemu 1.6.1) on Fedora 20 seems to confirm (see XML dump below[1]). So, if I'm not mistaken, looks like the only way to test for the support in QEMU is to actually request a snapshot and see what happens. Is this right? If this is correct, I would like to craft and propose a patch to libvirt to export this information, maybe into a form of some kind of warning list/blacklist: disk snapshotting it is supposed to be available, but this particular QEMU doesn't support it. What would be the best form to export such information? the options I see are * enhance the capabilities XML * add a new API: something like (very rough first draft) int virDomainIsSnapshotSupported(virConnectPtr conn, unsigned int flags); Thoughts? Hi, I'm wondering how to attach a network device properly to a domain. According to the man page without "--config" a device created with "attach-device" will be added to the domain yet with "--config" it will only be added to the config and only be available after a restart of the guest. Is there no way to attach the device immediately *and* also make that change persistent? Regards, Dennis

Dear list, Something has been perplexing me lately. I have a bunch of Windows 7 virtual machines running on top of Fedora 20 in KVM using virt-manager. One of the big problems is that users who need the Windows VM's don't know how to user virt-manager and when they accidentally reboot a machine I have to manually setup the virt-manager session for them and make it full-screen. That means if I'm not physically there the users are unable to use the Windows sessions and cannot do their work. Is there a way to create a GDM desktop session that just launches a virtual machine via virsh and then logs directly into a full-screen virt-viewer instance of that virtual machine? Best, AGS

hi, recently i've been busy with libvirt(d) v1.2.0 on armhf and i see, even if selinux sec driver is enabled on the configure stage, the driver is not finally created. these configure parameters are: --with-selinux --with-secdriver-selinux --with-selinux-mount=/sys/fs/selinux the /sys/fs/selinux is valid, selinux is running in permissive mode, got also libselinux DEV package installed, so no missing req. headers here. when trying to run libvirtd, i'm getting: error : virSecurityDriverLookup:78 : unsupported configuration: Security driver selinux not enabled error : lxcSecurityInit:1461 : Failed to initialise security drivers error : virStateInitialize:854 : Initialisation of LXC state driver failed: unsupported configuration: Security driver selinux not enabled error : daemonRunStateInit:909 : Driver state initialisation failed someone got any clue what may be causing this? thanks, ivan gooten

I am wondering what the default value for migrate-setmaxdowntime is when using QEMU/KVM. http://builder.virt-tools.org/artifacts/libvirt-virshcmdref/html/sect-migra… Is the default the same as QEMU's default in this case? I was looking at libvirts source and it appears there is no default set within libvirt, unless I missed it. I do see qemuDomainMigrateSetMaxDowntime() directly enters the monitor to change the value when set with that command. Any insight/confirmation is appreciated.

Hello, I have 2 hosts A and B,the settings of libvirtd are A: Compiled against library: libvirt 0.10.2 Using library: libvirt 0.10.2 Using API: QEMU 0.10.2 Running hypervisor: QEMU 0.12.1 B: Compiled against library: libvir 0.9.4 Using library: libvir 0.9.4 Using API: QEMU 0.9.4 Running hypervisor: QEMU 0.12.1 when I migrate a guest from A to B without storage,I used the command "virsh migrate --live --copy-storage-all --verbose vm qemu+ssh://kvm/system".The first time I succeed and I wantto to emulate the local network is down when I migrate,so I close the terminal (Xshell) when migrating, when I reconnect to the terminal ,use the migration command again,it failed.The libvirtd.log says: error : qemuMonitorIORead:514 : Unable to read from monitor: Connection reset by peer warning : qemuMonitorMigrateToFd:1941 : failed to close migration handle It seems that the migration process has not finished normally and so migration cannot go on. I want to know how to resolve it. thanks.

I am using QEMU/KVM, using Live Migrations like this: virsh migrate --live ${name} qemu+ssh://${DESTINATION}/system My question, running this command makes it hang in the foreground. Is there a way for this to return immediately, so I can just poll for the migration status? Also, is there a way to _cancel_ a migration? I see the --timeout option, however if a given timeout is reached I would rather have the ability to cancel the migration than force the suspend. I do see there is a QEMU api migrate_cancel..eg: virsh qemu-monitor-command ${name} --pretty '{"execute":"migrate_cancel"}' Is that the only way to cancel a migration using libvirt?

Hello, I installed libvirt and qemu/kvm on a machine. I testet a little with those and found out that all users having an account on that machine can start every VM of every other user on the machine, in some conditions even directly access the image file on the real host. What I would like to have is that every user can only access the VMs and image files he or she created himself/herself, as long as he/she does not explicitly set other permissions. Dear all, I failed to start the linux container's network interface automatically. I have to start it manually each time after the container finishes booting. I know that in a native fedora, if we want the network interface to start automatically, we should edit "/etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth0 and add the string "ONBOOT=yes". My host is fedora 16. I used "yum --installroot=/root/fedoralxc --releasever=16 install -y openssh, bridge-utils" to setup the rootfs for my container (Laine thought that my fedora version is a little bit older, I wonder if the newer version fedora container can automatically start its network interface ) After rootfs installation, in the container's file system, there is no sub-directory named "network-scripts" in "/etc/sysconfig" . So, I created this directory manually and added a file named "ifcfg-eth0", but the container's network interface still cannot start automatically. I tried to add files ".bash_profile" and ".bashrc" in which I added the "ifconfig" in the shell script to try to configure eth0 automatically, but it still doesn't work. I wonder if there is a ".bashrc" for the root of a container? If there is, where should this file be located? Any comments will be highly appreciated. Cheng
