Hi guys, when I detach an interface from vm during boot (vm boot not finished), it always fail. I'm not sure if there is an existing bug. Isolated bridge does not bridge

Hello, I want to do some testing and I have removed two VM's from the bridge what connects them to internet, and added them to another isolated bridge what's not connected to internet. Problem is that I cannot reach the other host in the isolated network. Something like this: virsh shutdown kvm66 virsh shutdown kvm68 brctl delif br0 vnet10 vnet6 # the interfaces of kvm66 and kvm68 brctl addbr br1 brctl addif br1 vnet10 vnet6 Then I've replaced br0 to br1 in the XML of both VM's with "virsh edit". Then I did start the VM's using the serial console (no network): virsh start --console kvm66 virsh start --console kvm68 I cannot ping from one machine to the other. Why?? Set hostname of guest during installation time

Hi, I would like to set the hostname when installing a guest, with the below command the hostname is not set to 'try06' in the guest: virt-install --name=try06 --graphic none --pxe --network bridge=virbr0 How can I set the hostname of the guest during installation time? Hi folks, I'm trying to build libvirt using meson with the latest upstream libvirt, but the compilation fails: (followed on https://libvirt.org/compiling.html, not sure if any dependencies are missed. [libvirt] SRIOV configuration

Hello, We encountered a problem while testing SRIOV on kubevirt [1]: We are currently using the Device "hostdev" generic options to pass-through the VF to the guest. It is not done through the "interface" (with type hostdev) because that option requires access to the PF which is not available in our case (the VF is moved to the container namespace where libvirt runs, but not the PF, however libvirt attempts to access the PF and fails). The PCI addresses appearing on the domxml are not the same as the ones mappend/detected in the VM itself. I compared the domxml on the host and the lspci in the VM while the VM runs. This occurs only when SRIOV is defined, messing up also the other "regular" vnics. Somehow, everything comes up and runs (with the SRIOV interface as well) on the first boot (even though the PCI addresses are not in sync), but additional boots cause the VM to mess up the interfaces (not all are detected). consuming pre-created tap - with multiqueue

Hello, On KubeVirt, we are trying to pre-create a tap device, then instruct libvirt to consume it (via the type=ethernet , managed='no' attributes). It works as expected, **unless** when we create a multi-queue tap device. The difference when creating the tap device is that we set the multi-queue flag; libvirt throws the following error when consuming it: ``` LibvirtError(Code=38, Domain=0, Message='Unable to create tap device tap0: Invalid argument') ``` After digging a bit on the libvirt code (we're using libvirt 6.0.0), I see this on the logs (immediately before the error): {"component":"virt-launcher","level":"info","msg":"Enabling IFF_VNET_HDR","pos":"virNetDevProbeVnetHdr:190","subcomponent":"libvirt","thread":"33" ,"timestamp":"2020-09-22T10:34:29.335000Z"} I do not understand how it can try to set the VNET_HDR flag, since I have not set it when I created it, which, as per [0] should only happen when requested. Here's the tap device I'm creating: (output of `ip tuntap show`) - tap0: tap persist0x100 user 107 group 107 I'm confused by this, since on [1] it says that only one flag can be used (persist *or* vnet_hdr). Also, from my limited understanding, in order to open a pre-created tap device, it must be set to persistent. Am I right (in the sense that these flags cannot co-exist) ? If so, why would libvirt be setting the VNET_HDR flag on the tap device ? Hi, i have a two-node cluster running on SLES 12 with pacemaker. The cluster refused to start the domains on one node. So i took some of the domains out of the cluster and tried to start it manually. This is what happened: virsh # define /mnt/share/vm_documents-oo.xml error: Failed to define domain from /mnt/share/vm_documents-oo.xml error: cannot open /dev/null: Operation not permitted Same with another domain. On the other node domains are defined and started without problems. Permissions on /dev and /dev/null are the same: ha-idg-1:/mnt/share # ll -d /dev drwxr-xr-x 25 root root 5420 Sep 17 20:47 /dev ha-idg-1:/mnt/share # ll /dev/null crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 3 Aug 24 14:39 /dev/null ha-idg-2:/mnt/share # ll -d /dev drwxr-xr-x 25 root root 5340 Sep 9 10:31 /dev ha-idg-2:/mnt/share # ll /dev/null crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 3 Aug 24 15:48 /dev/null ha-idg-1 is the one causing trouble. redirecting guest serial to file on the host

Greetings, I have a vm to which I can access using virsh console vm1/ I'd like in addition to be able to dump the serial of the vm in to a file on the host. The VM cfg does contain the mem balloon device configuration. Inside of the VM we have a Kubernetes. The host system has 64GB, the VM has maxmemory and currentmemory set to 32GB. I would like to ask you, how we can test that the memory ballooning mechanism works? Does it works on this version or not. What I see on the host level, if I put under stress the host with a hugh memory allocation, in that case the VM resident memory size it is decreasing, but it not decrease so much as it is expected, and it started to swap out to host swap disk. The VM on idle state it has 32GB total memory and 21GB free memory. And what I see the RSS size of the qemu is decresing with 5-6GB. Do you have any procedure, how it can be tested? Or there is any log where I can see that the memory ballooning is started to work? Regards, Csongor

network config not working on newer libvirt

Greetings, up until a year ago, I was running a server with Debian 10 (stable) on it with the latest versions of libvirt, qemu and kernel 4.19.x Debian 10 had to offer (both libvirt and qemu versions were really old). the network config was simple, one of the vm acted as a router and provided the ip for both the host and the vm. Hi guys, When a guest's memory is dynamically reduced with setMemory API (and "balloon" QMP API), I'm wondering whether the virtio-balloon driver in the guest is consuming such reduced memory. If so, how can I see that the memory virtio-balloon is consuming? and is it possible the virtio-balloon has such a huge memory even though it's a kernel module?? Thanks,

Network update disrupts network usage

Dear libvirt users, I am encountering problems with network connections from VMs while running net-update on the host. I would be very grateful for suggestions of fixes or workarounds. I am using libvirt in the context of an automated test system which creates and destroys VMs fairly rapidly, hence network updates occur often. ## Reproducer The issue can be reproduced as follows. Run in a VM: $ while true; do curl --max-time 5 https://www.google.com/ > /dev/null; sleep 1; done These curl invocations succeed reliably. Now at the same time, run on the host: $ while true; do virsh net-update default add ip-dhcp-host "<host mac='52:54:00:ff:ff:ff' ip='192.168.122.240'/>" --live --config; virsh net-update default delete ip-dhcp-host "<host mac='52:54:00:ff:ff:ff' ip='192.168.122.240'/>" --live --config; done The curl invocations now sometimes succeed, sometimes error out with "Connection refused" and sometimes time out. I have reproduced this on Ubuntu 18.04 with libvirt 4.7.0 and on Ubuntu 20.04 with libvirt 6.0.0. The network has <forward mode='nat'/>. ## Analysis The issue appears to relate to the iptables manipulations performed by libvirt when net-update is used. Various rules disappear temporarily, such as these ones: -A FORWARD -d 192.168.122.0/24 -o virbr0 -m conntrack --ctstate RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.122.0/24 ! -d 192.168.122.0/24 -p tcp -j MASQUERADE --to-ports 1024-65535 ## Workarounds With libvirt 6, a dedicated chain is set up for the iptables rules. As a result, I have been able to work around the issue by inserting the necessary rules with higher priority as follows: iptables -I FORWARD -d 192.168.122.0/24 -o virbr0 -m conntrack --ctstate RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT iptables -I FORWARD -s 192.168.122.0/24 -i virbr0 -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -s 192.168.122.0/24 ! -d 192.168.122.0/24 -p udp -j MASQUERADE --to-ports 1024-65535 iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -s 192.168.122.0/24 ! -d 192.168.122.0/24 -p tcp -j MASQUERADE --to-ports 1024-65535 However, this workaround is fragile - it could easily break with a change in configuration. Also, this workaround does not work with libvirt 4. With that version, the rules are inserted directly into the built-in chains, so it is not possible to insert other rules that maintain a higher priority. I have also tried removing the `forward` element from the network and creating the iptables rules manually. This works, but has the issue that the VM is not provided with the DHCP option for the router, so it does not automatically set up a default route. ## Conclusion The underlying problem seems to be that net-update removes and re-creates the iptables rules, even when it makes no changes to them. The best fix would be to correct that. Has anyone else encountered this situation? Is there any more information I should provide to help with investigations? Hi guys, I used setMemory in order to dynamically change guest's memory on QEMU-KVM. As expected, memory(total, free, available) in the guest was really changed, but after a few seconds, it automatically reverted to its initial memory. So, setMemory changes the guest's memory temporarily? Thanks.

Two questions about NVDIMM devices

Hi, I've met two situations with NVDIMM support in libvirt where I'm not sure all the parties (libvirt & I) do the things correctly. The first problem is with memory alignment and size changes. In addition to the size changes applied to NVDIMMs by QEMU, libvirt also makes some NVDIMM size changes for better alignments, in qemuDomainMemoryDeviceAlignSize. This can lead to the size being rounded up, exceeding the size of the backing device and QEMU failing to start the VM for that reason (I've experienced that actually). I work with emulated NVDIMM devices, not a bare metal hardware, so one might argue that in practice the device sizes should already be aligned, but I'm not sure it must be always the case considering labels or whatever else the user decides to set up. And I still don't feel very comfortable that I have to count with two internal size adjustments (libvirt & QEMU) to the `size' value I specify, with the ultimate goal of getting the VM started and having the NVDIMM aligned properly to make (non-NVDIMM) memory hot plug working. Is the size alignment performed by libvirt, especially rounding up, completely correct for NVDIMMs? The second problem is that a VM fails to start with a backing NVDIMM in devdax mode due to SELinux preventing access to the /dev/dax* device (it doesn't happen with any other NVDIMM modes). Who should be responsible for handling the SELinux label appropriately in that case? libvirt, the system administrator, anybody else? Using <seclabel> in NVDIMM's source doesn't seem to be accepted by the domain XML schema. Thanks, Milan

Problem with a RAW Disk and Xen

Why? It is a shared disk between the DomU's but configured as "readonly" so there shouldnt be a problem (with the same xen xl configuration, there is no problem) -- ------ Greetz

Hello, I have an iSCSI disk with a backup. I want to use that backup on another machine to test putting back data. What I also could do is to hot-unplug the disk at the production machine, and then hot-plug it at the test-machine. But the machines are Windows, and I don't know Windows well. Error With Xeon 2678 in virt-manager

Hello, I have to select Ivy Bridge since I have Xeon 2678 but I cannot find it on the drop-down menu in virt-manager. When I select copy host cpu configuration it changes it to EPYC as soon as I click the start button. I have Manjaro on my computer. How to solve this problem? printing the qemu final execution line from an xml

Greetings, I have a qemu line which I want to convert ot libvirt xml but as domxml-from-native is deprecated, I want to try it the other way around. e.g. write an libvirt xml and dump the final qemu line without running it. is there a way to do so? Thanks, Dagg.

Greetings, I need to get a device like this: https://www.pulse-eight.com/p/104/usb-hdmi-cec-adapter I have usb pass-through experiences with some usb devices such as dtv, wireless network, thumbsticks and wireless keyboards. I know there isn't much to be done in usb pass-through but I did had issues with the former two, now I'm using a wireless network without and issues. I wanted to know if someone has tried using this device as pass-through into a vm and can share his thoughts. Thanks, Dagg.

bridge + SR-IOV guests with KVM

Hi, I managed to get SR-IOV with an Intel I350 NIC to work.For this I followed the documentation on this page: https://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Networking#Assignment_from_a_pool_of_SRIOV_VF… But as I have more VMs then VF on the NIC I also have a bridge wich serves the other guests. As I run Debian Buster as host I followed the documentation here: https://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Networking#Debian.2FUbuntu_Bridging If I use only the SRIOV everything works as expected. All guests can be reached for the network and the guests and host can reach each other. The same goes for a sole bridged environment. As I dived into the issue I found an answer form the intel community: https://community.intel.com/t5/Ethernet-Products/82599-VF-to-Linux-host-bri… It says I need to add the "VF mac addresses and eth0 mac address to bridge forwarding database". I have done this with the following command: bridge fdb add 52:54:00:3c:1c:e6 dev eth_lan0 The mac address is from my VM which is on the bridge. And the eth_lan0 interface is the physical interface of my bridge and also the PF of my I350 NIC. This seems to work. But doing this manually is annoying and a bit of a hassle when creating new VMs on the bridge. I there a way to let libvirt do this work? Hi, Just a heads up on my experiences with the new build system. Arch Linux meson-0.55.1 Overall, it looks good, so well done! Just a couple of minor things I noted: 1. Arch uses a meson wrapper script (arch-meson) that sets: --buildtype plain This seems to trigger a bug in meson that results in copious bogus compiler warnings: cc1: warning: ‘-Wformat-y2k’ ignored without ‘-Wformat’ [-Wformat-y2k] cc1: warning: ‘-Wformat-extra-args’ ignored without ‘-Wformat’ [-Wformat-extra-args] cc1: warning: ‘-Wformat-zero-length’ ignored without ‘-Wformat’ [-Wformat-zero-length] cc1: warning: ‘-Wformat-contains-nul’ ignored without ‘-Wformat’ [-Wformat-contains-nul] cc1: warning: ‘-Wformat-security’ ignored without ‘-Wformat’ [-Wformat-security] which of course breaks -Werror builds. I can easily work around it by setting `-D git_werror=disabled' or even better still: CFLAGS+=" -Wall" arch-meson... Maybe this github issue is related?: https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/issues/7399 2. Arch currently builds libvirt with support for ZFS. Seeing as ZFS is not in the distro proper, a simple Autoconf tweak is used: ZFS=/usr/bin/zfs ZPOOL=/usr/bin/zpool \ ./configure ... This is surprisingly hard to emulate with meson, in fact it appears impossible, unless I resort to dodgy hacks with sed etc. Cheers
