I just ran into an issue where I had about 30 guests get duplicate mac addresses assigned. These were scattered across 30 different machines. Some debugging revealed that: 1) All the host machines were restarted within a couple seconds of each other 2) All the host machines had fairly similar libvirtd pids (within ~100 PIDs of each other) 3) Libvirt seeds the RNG using 'time(NULL) ^ getpid()' This perfectly explains why I saw so many duplicate mac addresses. Why is the RNG seed such a predictable value? Surely there has to be a better source of a random seed then the timestamp and the pid? The PID seems to me to be a very bad source of any randomness. I just ran a test across 60 of our hosts. 43 of them shared their PID with at least one other machine.

Greetings, I am dumping a guest VM memory for inspection using the command "virDomainCoreDumpWithFormat" and the created files appear to belong to root (both user and group). I have searched around but didn't find any answer. Is there a way to instruct QEMU to create those files under a different user? Thank you.

I would really appreciate some pointers on what I am doing wrong here. I have a need to run multiple virtual guests which have each their own GPU and some USB controllers passed-through. Hi, It looks like , when adding a channel device, that the Guest must be powered off / on to be able to detect the new device . Dear All, I am trying to use VM (disk) locking on a two node Centos 7 KVM cluster. Unfortunately, I am not successful. Using virtlockd (https://libvirt.org/locking-lockd.html) I get each host to write the zero length file with a hashed filename to the shared folder specified. Regardless of which host I start a VM (domain) on, they do produce the identical filename per VM. What does not work, however, is to prevent the second host to start the VM already running on the first VM. Using sanlock (https://libvirt.org/locking-sanlock.html) no domains do start at all. However, the file "__LIBVIRT__DISKS__" is also not written to the shared folder. Hence, nothing works. Can someone please point me to the right direction? My system is current Centos 7 using a gluster storage setup like suggested for oVirt (https://community.redhat.com/blog/2014/10/up-and-running-with-ovirt-3-5/) based on the oVirt 3.5 repo but without an engine. I do this, because I want to retain VM files in qcow2 format for live backups and with human readable names. What does work then is, e.g., live migration. A locking mechanism to prevent starting a VM twice would be good. Please note that this configuration - both according to redhat and to my own trial and error - requires Lock=False in /etc/nfsmount.conf. Is there a connection with my findings? My issues occur regardless of the files being in NFS or Gluster folders. KVM must load the Gluster storage indirectly via NFS rather than straight via Gluster, as Gluster storage does not seem to fully work, at least in virt-manager. My software versions are: libvirt 1.2.8-16.el7_1.3.x86_64 qemu-kvm ev-2.1.2-23.el7_1.3.1.x86_64 Regards, Michael

[libvirt-users] CPU feature 'svm' not reported inside guest without 'host-passthrough'

Hi, I am confused by the behaviour of the CPU description in my VM. I have a host with an AMD CPU with SVM feature and I want to try nested virtualization on a Fedora22 guest. The host is Fedora22 as well. libvirtd (libvirt) 1.2.13.1 kernel 4.1.6-200.fc22.x86_64 1. I tried 'custom' mode with model qemu64 with required feature 'SVM' but '/proc/cpuinfo' in the guest doesn't show SVM. 2. However, if I forbid the SVM feature, the guest can't be created and libvirt complains that the host CPU has SVM. 3. The only way to have SVM reported in '/proc/cpuinfo' inside the guest VM is using 'host-passthrough' mode, but I want to avoid it to allow migration of the VM. [libvirt-users] vms not persistent after upgrading to f22?

With f21 and earlier, I could just call virt-install to create VMs, and they would persist after reboot. After upgrading to f22, when I shut off a VM, it is removed, and has to be recreated. How can I get VMs to persist? Is there a virsh create or virt-install switch to do this?

I'm trying to migrate my VirtualBox test lab to KVM. In my VB configuration, I have several VM routers with 4 interfaces each. Each router has a bridged interface which connects them all together and to the outside world. I have servers/clients dispersed on each of the other private (Isolated) segments that use the routers as default gateways. In trying to make this work, I used Virtual Machine Manager to define 3x Virtual Networks (Isolated networks) and created a VM router which has 3 interfaces (192.168.x.1) on each Isolated network and a 4th interface using the br0 interface to get to the outside world. The router is able to connect to the outside world. Using Virtual Machine Manager, I also created "client" VM and connected it's single interface to one of the Isolated networks. While testing connectivity of the "client" VM to the router, it seems to go straight to the Host (tested using 'ssh 192.168.x.1'.) I'm trying to isolate the networks from the Host and have the router receive packets for the 192.168.x.1 address on the individual Isolated network segments. Host: br0 (em1): 192.168.1.16 vibr0 (default): 192.168.122.1 virbr1: 192.168.2.1 virbr2: 192.168.3.1 virbr3: 192.168.4.1 VM router: eth0: 192.168.1.10 eth1: 192.168.2.1 eth2: 192.168.3.1 eth3: 192.168.4.1 VM client: eth0: 192.168.3.101 Is there some trick to isolate the Host from the VM's? Is there a comprehensive guide that explains how the networks should be setup (with/without Virtual Machine Manager)? I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty on the console if needed, but GUI's are easier to navigate when you're learning a new technology. I switched to using RemoteBox for managing my VB vm's as it made things a lot easier to deal with than VBoxManage. Thanks for your help!

Hi, I try to exchange datas between host and Guest by adding these lines in a guest .xml conf file : <channel type='pty'> <target type='virtio' name='arbitrary.virtio.serial.port.name'/> <address type='virtio-serial' controller='0' bus='0' port='1'/> </channel> Then /dev/virtio-ports/arbitrary.virtio.serial.port.name is exposed in the guest and a /dev/pts/x is seen as source path on the host. I'm trying to isolate the networks from the Host and have the router receive packets for the 192.168.x.1 address on the individual Isolated network segments. Host: br0 (em1): 192.168.1.16 vibr0 (default): 192.168.122.1 virbr1: 192.168.2.1 virbr2: 192.168.3.1 virbr3: 192.168.4.1 VM router: eth0: 192.168.1.10 eth1: 192.168.2.1 eth2: 192.168.3.1 eth3: 192.168.4.1 VM client: eth0: 192.168.3.101 Is there some trick to isolate the Host from the VM's? Is there a comprehensive guide that explains how the networks should be setup (with/without Virtual Machine Manager)? I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty on the console if needed, but GUI's are easier to navigate when you're learning a new technology. [libvirt-users] Configuration for NATing VMs in a host

Hi all!, I have a setup in which I want to NAT several Virtual Machines from the host based on ports all of them running CentOS 7.1. The idea is I have several different services running in different VMs and all of them are accessible from the host using different ports that are forwarded to the correct ones in the VMs. I’ve been able to set this up and running configuring the VMs with a virtio network interface and command line redirection on the XML configuration file. However, it is proving to be non stable. Even though VMs are running ok, connection is not possible at some stage until the VM is rebooted and it looks like the port forwarding is not working anymore. I wrote a small script that adds and deletes rules for port forwarding triggered by the qemu hooks and that has brought the needed stability but I’d like to go to a cleaner solution based on firewall-cmd or get rid of it in case it’s possible. On the first draft that I’m using firewall-cmd instead of the iptables rules, it proves to be as unstable as without the qemu hook script. My fear is I’m not configuring libvirt properly. Has anyone experienced such this behaviour and can point me to a better solution?. Thanks for your time, Nacho

[libvirt-users] Static USB port passthrough is not possible

Hello, I am currently trying to configure of forwarding devices from specific USB ports which is supported by QEMU. But I don't see any support from libvirt side. Due to libvirt security it occurs to be impossible to passthrough devices from specific bus+port combination. As workaround I may suggest only writing udev rules which use specific script which adds devices to running domains. Unfortunately situation becomes more complicated when I do need to passthrough these devices during system boot -- the special service is required which will handle all these devices after libvirt-guests are up. I am trying to install windows 10 (dreamspark education ISO) into qemu-kvm on Gentoo linux. I got past the cpu problems but am stuck on the image file drivers. The relevant xml is below. It asks for the driver disk which I have, but if I select a driver (either vioscsi or viostor which show as valid it churns away for a few seconds and brings up the cant find driver dialog and cant progress. I've tried both the 102 and 109 RH driver versions (Ive tried most drivers from the ISO's that shows as compatible, usually win8 or 8.1.) I've realized that libvirt-iohelper are ran to make this operations: 1) reading stream from stdin and writng to a file 2) reading stream from a file and writing to stdout I've also realized that virsh uses libvirt-iohelper via virStorageVolUpload/virStorageVolDownload. But i can't find the place where virsh works with stdin/stdout (reading/writing full data to this I/O).

[libvirt-users] KVM Storage Pools on LVM

I have been running some virtual machines on CentOS7 KVM with the VMs living in a folder under a /home directory. Everything I've read says to create LVM volume groups and base storage pools on that. So i followed the instructions at https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/ht… and now have 2 LVM-based storage pools called guest_images_lvm and guest_isos_lvm which are both showing as Active in virt-manager. I now want to move my VMs from /home to the new guest_images_lvm storage pool - but what directory do I copy them to? There doesn't appear to be any directories called guest_images_lvm. I'm not very familiar with LVM - perhaps there is no directory structure? In which case how do I actually move the VMs to the new storage pools? I thought there would be directories under /dev but they're not there. I may have stuffed up the creation of the storage pools as I filled in the Target Path field in virt-manager but left Source Path blank. I found the documentation confusing on this. It creates LVM partitions on /dev/sdb and then says to enter /dev/sdc as the Source Path. is that a mistake? I don't have a /dev/sdc so I ended up leaving this and Build Pool blank. The storage pools got created anyway, but I wonder if this is the source of my problem?

Hi, I'm trying to create a snapshot on a specific disk by using diskspec option. However, libvirt/virsh seems to ignore it and takes a snapshot of all disks. Am I using this option incorrectly? In below examples, I'm trying to snapshot only vdb. However even vda is getting snapshotted regardless of diskspec. Is this a known issue? Hi, I noticed that libvirt-lxc will be deprecated for RedHat: "Future development on the Linux containers framework is now based on the docker command-line interface. libvirt-lxc tooling may be removed in a future release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (including Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7) and should not be relied upon for developing custom container management applications." - https://access.redhat.com/articles/1365153 And CentOS: "further deprecated packages: libvirt-daemon-driver-lxc, libvirt-daemon-lxc and libvirt-login-shell " - http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS7 And LXC support from linuxcontainers.org is poor for RedHat/CentOS: "... Also Cgmanager which is currently not available on CentOS 7. So cannot support unprivileged containers and thus LXD. Systemd based containers need at least LXC 1.1, lxcfs and related dependencies that are not available on CentOS. ... For a stable, seamless and smooth experience we suggest either Debian Wheezy with Flockport packages or Ubuntu Trusty. ..." - https://www.flockport.com/lxc-and-lxd-support-across-distributions/ It seems that the only way for me to use LXC containers on CentOS/RedHat is to use Docker, which I am not particularly happy about since, as I understand it, Docker and libvirt-lxc/linuxcontainers.org-lxc are for different use cases, with their own pros and cons, for example: "Why use LXD? ... Full operating system functionality within containers, not just single processes ..." - http://www.ubuntu.com/cloud/tools/lxd There are many uses for full containers within build, server management, testing, etc. where quickly creating containers that look, 'feel' and act just like real servers is beneficial, and far cheaper (in many ways) and more versatile than fully virtualised machines or docker containers. I have just discovered libvirt-lxc and found that it works well on both Ubuntu and RedHat, and is designed to be integrated into tooling, which is exactly what I need. I considered Runc before libvirt, but libvirt is so versatile, allowing me to use other technologies such as qemu/kvm, and with its rich API, that I would prefer to use libvirt - it would allow me the most options for change in the future and seemed like a 'no-brainer' until I saw the deprecation announcement. Hi, I seem to have a problem when creating a LXC container through virsh. While virsh -c lxc:/// dominfo <container> shows up (for example) 2 VCPUs as defined, if I run a CPU intensive task (such as stress --cpu 10) it will max out 10 CPU cores on the host. If I echo "0" > /cgroup/cpuset/libvirt/lxc/<domain>/cpuset.cpus then the container is properly confined to just one CPU core. Subsequently, running stress --cpu 10 only one core on the host is maxed out. Does anyone know what syntax/config I'm missing, while installing the lxc container via virsh..to ensure that the VCPUs are restricted to the number defined? Thanks in advance

Hi, Is that possible? If I start in normal VGA mode I can see yellow ! next to the 2nd and 3rd QXL card and Win complains about can't start (Code 10). How do I "enable" qemu-ga on a guest to be able to (I think this means have a success-response:true) for: guest-suspend-hybrid; guest-suspend-ram; guest-suspend-disk; and guest-shutdown? At least I think that's my question. http://wiki.stoney-cloud.org/wiki/Qemu_Guest_Agent_Integration shows these same 4 as false, so I'm not sure if they're always supposed to be that way. My overall point is to be able to run dompmsuspend servo disk. If I manually delete the Q35 USB Controllers, I can use managedsave/start, but I start getting tty errors that don't happen before the managedsave/start. Using libvirt 1.2.18 (-1 Arch) and QEMU git-master (2.4.0.r40384.2d69736). Installed using Q35 chipset. I'm running QEMU git, which allows SCSI controller migration, so I can attempt doing this. I started my guest, and waited for 15 minutes. No post-booting tty1/dmesg messages. After a managedsave/start, I start getting tty1/dmesg errors. managedsave/start appears to work, but VM is unusable due to non-stop repeating uhci_hcd errors. I can't remove the USB controller from QEMU, but I CAN remove it through virsh edit. Doing so eliminates the USB controller in the guest, preventing non-stop repeating uhci_hcd errors. (QEMU only lets you remove the USB redirection entries, which didn't help.) Using libvirt 1.2.18 (-1 Arch) and QEMU git-master (2.4.0.r40384.2d69736). Installed using Q35 chipset. What's the status of the SATA controller migration bug? Are the patches for it expected to be in 2.4? Looks like they didn't make it into 2.3. Since you last wrote, if the SATA controller patches aren't in yet, is there any new way to avoid the SATA controller device, if you have no SATA devices? You have described the situation perfectly. Here are my notes from libvirt commit c27b0bb171d9bdac10a93492a2a99eaa22746694, which fixed the handling of "default" devices in the Q35 machinetype: sata - a q35 machine always has a sata controller implicitly added at slot 0x1F, function 2. There is no way to avoid this controller, so we always add it. Note that the xml2xml tests for the pcie-root and q35 cases were changed to use DO_TEST_DIFFERENT() so that we can check for the sata controller being automatically added. This is especially important because we can't check for it in the xml2argv output (it has no effect on that output since it's an implicit device). So basically when you specify a q35 machinetype, you get a SATA controller at 00:1f.2 even though you have added no commandline args to ask for it. And unlike the default network device (which libvirt can eliminate by adding "-net none" to the qemu commandline), there is no way to avoid this device. And it is also true that any machine with a SATA controller can't be migrated because of problems with the driver. I just talked to the person responsible for fixing these bugs in qemu, and he said that the patches will go upstream "soon", and that he hopes they will be in qemu 2.3. In the meantime, the only way to avoid this problem is to switch to an i440fx-based machinetype (this will require removing all the pci controllers from your config as well as removing all <address type='pci' .../> elements within all devices in the domain; libvirt will then reassign PCI addresses in the guest appropriate to the new machine type. IMPORTANT: If the guest is running MS Windows, this may require a new "activation"; best to keep a copy of the old config and an image of the disk just in case there are problems!)

I'm using libvirt_lxc to create and manage various containers. I need to enable certain capabilities in a container to support ctdb, and as a quick solution I decided to just enable them all. Using: edk2.git-0-20150803.b1141.ga0973dc.x86_64 edk2.git-ovmf-x64-0-20150802.b1139.gb234418.noarch On Fedora 22. Provisioning a i440FX system in virt-manager and attempting to boot results in successful EFI initialization, but the VM exits ungracefully after the bootloader (with F22 and CentOS 7 installer images). There's no really useful information in any of the logs. Using qemu-kvm directly (qemu-kvm -bios /usr/share/edk2.git/ovmf-x64/OVMF_CODE-pure-efi.fd -m 1G -cdrom ~rbarry/Downloads/Fedora-Server-netinst-x86_64-22.iso) boots and loads successfully. What's the difference here? [libvirt-users] UDP unicast network backend (QEMU)

In 2012 QEMU added UDP unicast network backend support https://github.com/qemu/qemu/commit/0e0e7facc775e9bb020314f48751b3d09f316c8… Checked latest libvirt on the git repo, and didn't see this as an option. So tried to use the mcast tunnel mode. I keep getting duplicate packets with BPDUs and LLDP packets going between the Point to point connection between the VMs. VMs have bridges on them. When I used the TCP tunnel interface, if the client came up before the server end, the connection failed to establish. So both methods not super reliable. If I manually change the netdev settings to use unicast udp tunneling the connection is way more stable just like the GNS3 connections. Has anyone written support for UDP unicast network backend for QEMU and the patch is awaiting review? Searched mailing list and couldn't find a bug covering this. Just want to be sure no one has worked on this before creating a patch to add this support.
