Hello, I have a custom QEMU which requires some non-standard command line arguments to launch a VM. e.g., "--proc-type=secondary" option is always required to launch a QEMU VM. To launch the VM through libvirt (virsh) "How do I specify these non-standard options in XML? OR if thats not possible ,Can you guide me at which point (code file) libvirt converts the XML to QEMU command (so that I can insert the option there). Regards -- Asadullah Hussain

[libvirt-users] Programmatically force shutdown a guest: possible?

I am looking at the shutdown method, but if the guest system is a desktop system, like for example ubuntu, it just has the effect to show a box prompting the user for a shutdown/reboot/ and such. I could enter the guest and change this default behaviour and it actually works..but I'd like for a way to send a shutdown command without doing so. Is it possible?

Hello I have manually compiled a customized qemu (1.4.0) which runs fine on its own (create VM etc) but I want to access this qemu through libvirt (virt-manager, virsh etc). But the libvirt driver only looks into "/usr/bin" for qemu binaries, how can I tell libvirt to connect to my qemu which is placed at "/home/user/qemu" directory. -- Asadullah Hussain

Hello, for my vm I'd like to specify a disk image which would be on an iscsi target. Currently, by using targets directly, I'd just specify the path in /dev/disk/by-path/ip-192.168.1.2:3260-iscsi-iqn.myiqn but how to specify a file which is actually INSIDE this path, ex. /dev/disk/by-path/ip-192.168.1.2:3260-iscsi-iqn.myiqn/myVmImage.img ? I saw that there is another path in /media/myHomeUser/anId but do this id changes each time?

Hypervisor= ubuntu 12.04.2 guest = ubuntu 12.04.4 used virt-manager to create a new storage file in qcow2 format on hypervisor and then attach it to the guest. In virt-man I can see the disk is attached. trying virsh attach-disk I get a failure saying disk already attached virsh dump xml shows the disk at vdb as it should be but on the guest, fdisk -l shows no vdb and its not in /proc I found one reference to apparmor saying add /proc rw to hypervisor's apparmor libvirt conf But I see some release notes that might be about avoiding this ( sounds insecure) so... Do I have to stop and restart the guest, change apparmor or what? -- John Fisher

[libvirt-users] host crashes "unable to handle paging request"

Hi, we have regular crashed of a kvm host with the error "unable to handle paging request". Can this be due to memory over-commitment even if some memory is still used by the kernel for caches and buffers? (collectd graph shows no free memory, with 15G used, very little buffers, and 1G cache). There are 32GB of swap, of which only 150MB are used. I suspect might be the direction to search to find the cause, but would be happy to learn from people versed in the kernel behaviour to confirm or reject my hypothesis. Below is the full error. [libvirt-users] LXC + passthrough mount and host filesystem-cache

Hello, I'm using libvirt to build/run LXC instances. My LXC instances use passthrough filesystem mounts. When I try to do large file systems operations (ex tar or rsync) the file systems cache on the host spikes and causes the OOM handler to run and kills processes in the LXC. Has anyone else seen this? Is there a way around this? At this point I'm resorting to running a cron job that dumps the filesystem cache every 5 minutes. The result is the filesystem cache on the host never grows too large and OOM never runs against LXC processes. The obvious down fall is that I'm killing my filesystem performance by duming the cache. I'm currently running libvirt 1.0.0 -- James R. Leu

hi, i installed libvirt-1.2.1 from the source with xen-4.3.1 and i am facing the following error when restarting the libvirt. I want to run a VPN software inside an lxc guest, but the required TUN/TAP device (/dev/net/tun) is missing in the container. Anyone knows how to enable this device ? Hi, I am working on a java application using libvirt java API (version 0.4.7) and i would like to authenticate through ssh within my application (no need for the user to type his password). How can i submit SSH authentication credentials to libvirt? I am trying to get it working using libssh2 callback, but i get the error: "SSH transport error: no suitable method to retrieve authentication credentials" before anything happens. I have the same error running "virsh -c qemu+libssh2://username@host/system list" command. What is the right way to get the ssh connection working from the java code? regards, David

Hi all I just encountered a problem in libvirt while was trying to attach and detach a sr-iov vf to my VM The version of my libvirt is 1.1.1-0ubuntu8.5 I tried to attach the device using following xml <interface type='hostdev' managed='yes'> <mac address='5c:01:fd:12:34:58'/> <source> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x04' slot='0x01' function='0x1'/> </source> </interface> When i attached device it worked properly and i managed to ping another host. virsh # attach-device t5 1.xml Device attached successfully But when i detached it still i had network traffic in my VM but libvirt (virsh) said that virsh # detach-device t5 1.xml Device detached successfully The next time i tried to attach it libvirt said that virsh # attach-device t5 1.xml error: Failed to attach device from 1.xml error: Requested operation is not valid: PCI device 0000:04:01.1 is in use by domain t5 I tried it with different VMs and different guest OSs that the same happend. The same action was done with another host running libvirt version Installed: 1.0.2-0ubuntu11.13.04.5~cloud1 Candidate: 1.0.2-0ubuntu11.13.04.5~cloud1 and it worked pretty OK. No problem. Do you have any idea what is wrong? Let's say I have some iptables rules defined to restrict guest traffic. If I restart the hosts firewall 'service iptables restart', all the guest-specific rules get blown away. Is there a way to reapply all the guest firewall rules, without restarting each individual guest? It looks like if I edit a nwfilter with `virsh nwfilter-edit` it goes and reapplies the rules to all the guests, so this functionality seems to be present already.

Hi there, I am a beginner with Libvirt. I was practicing using Python bindings with libvirt to do some basic stuff like starting a VM, rebooting a VM, displaying the number of domain,etc. I was wondering since the hypervisor has control over the VMs, it is possible to use Libvirt to inject code into the VM? Hi everyone, While doing a live migration, Linux guests will frequently get stuck and become unresponsive, while the CPU utilization on the host for that guest goes to 100%. Sometimes they recover, and dmesg then shows that there's been a clock problem during the live migration: Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = 35882846234 ns) So the TSC did a jump of nearly 36 seconds. Migrations often fail when going from server A to B, but will then work fine in the other direction. Both servers are locked to the same NTP source, and are well within 1ms from one another. Both hosts are running Ubuntu 13.04 with these versions (from Ubuntu packages): Kernel: 3.8.0-35-generic x86_64 Libvirt: 1.0.2 Qemu: 1.4.0 Gluster-fs: 3.4.2 (libvirt access the images via the filesystem, not using libgfapi yet). The interconnect between both machines (both for migration and gluster) is 10GbE. We have different guests (all Ubuntu releases, 13.04 and 13.10), and they all seem to be affected. Clocksource: kvm-clock on all guests. Clock entry from the guest XML: <clock offset='utc'/> Now as far as I've read in the documentation of kvm-clock, it specifically supports live migrations, so I'm a bit surprised at these problems. There isn't all that much information to find on these issue, although I have found postings by others that seem to have run into the same issues, but without a solution. Any help would be much appreciated. Hello, I have been trying to track different phases of a live migration process. I am using libvirt with qemu-kvm. I am issuing migration commands using virsh. Now, I want to measure the time spent in each phase of live migration, e.g., pre-copy and stop-copy. I stumbled upon the file qemu_driver.c. It has functions like qemudDomainMigratePrepare2 qemudDomainMigratePerform qemudDomainMigrateFinish2 I want to know whether qemudDomainMigratePerform and qemudDomainMigrateFinish2 directly map to the pre-copy and stop-copy phase? or the qemudDomainMigratePerform function performs both of them? Hi, I'm almost give up again because for a day I try to access my windows kvm guest from FC20 :) I've tried everything including virtio mapping mount -t 9p -o trans=virtio,version=9p2000.L hostshare /tmp/hostfiles where I get the following messages mount: special device hostshare does not exist --- --- to be honest clipboard sharing would be enough for me, so I googled why it is not working and I applied this: https://mytechdepot.wordpress.com/2013/02/22/enabling-clipboard-copy-paste-… yum install spice-vdagent # chkconfig --add spice-vdagentd # service spice-vdagentd start but, the clipboard sharing isn't working.... Hi all, As I am doing some tests with qemu, I realized that the way it does 'migrate -i tcp:DEST:444' is not the same as 'libvirt migrate --copy-storage-inc'. Basically qemu uses the same stream as RAM migration and libvirt takes advantage of NBD transfer. With virsh migrate-setspeed I observed that one can only control the transfer throughput of RAM, but not disk synchronization. At least this is what I can see in bmon when doing a migration with incremental copy. The question is: Am I missing something or it is not implemented? Thank you guys!

[libvirt-users] KVM networking help needed - Promiscuous network configuration for guest Snort instance

Hi, I am looking for some direction on how to configure KVM networking so that a promiscuous bridge/host nic/guest nic allows two different network monitoring packages to sniff the same physical traffic. The idea is to run a commercial package on the CentOS 6.5 host and Snort, via Security Onion, on the guest, both being fed by a physical switch SPAN or physical firewall TAP. The host has two NICs, one for management and one for sniffing. I am using libvirt and libvirt-manager to supplement configuration. I have basic bridge networking configured and connected on the management NIC, but I can't seem to figure out the missing piece for getting physical network traffic from the SPAN/TAP port to the Xubuntu guest NIC for sniffing. I have seen mention of setting the bridge aging time to 0, but that did not seem to work and the only place I could find to verify the setting was by running brctl showmacs <brisge name>. I have also seen posts saying this was more of a workaround, without discussing an alternate method. I have tinkered with setting the host nic, bridge, and guest nic to promiscuous mode, only to see relatively equal traffic climb on the host nic and bridge, but not the guest nic. Other searched have turned up discussions about tunctl and its implementation, so at this point I figured a reality check was in order. Is this idea feasible? If so, where should I be looking for information on how to implement it? Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Dear all, I am not clear about the 'vcpu' element for CPU allocation. I allocated 1 vCPU to my container, after I started the container, I ran 4 computation-intensive tasks on the container. And I found all the 4 physical core are 100% used (my host has 4 physical cores and no other application ran on the host except the container). That is, all available cores were used by the container. I want to know how to give a hard limitation for CPU usage of a container. So I don't understand what 'vcpu' setting can be used for. I know that another CPU allocation element 'shares' can also be used, but this elements only give a relative quota. If new containers are started, the CPU quota for the already started containers will change. Regards, Cheng

Hi all, I’m trying to integrate Perl’s Sys::Virt into an already existing AnyEvent program. I’m accustomed to writing things like this: use EV; use AnyEvent; use AnyEvent::Handle; my $h = AnyEvent::Handle->new(fh => $fh, …); $h->on_read(sub { … }); EV::run; ## start the event loop I can add some code in the on_read() handler and every time the $fh has something to read, it will fire off. I’d like to do something similar with Sys::Virt, but I can’t seem to wrap my head around its event system. The only examples I can find are the ones included in Sys::Virt source, which consist of a series of run_once() calls, or a while loop around run_default(). Does anyone have any idea how I can make this play nicely with an existing event loop such as EV, or even to fire off ($cv->send) an AnyEvent condvar when the event I set in domain_event_register_any() triggers? Our current solution involves setting an AnyEvent->timer, which periodically fires off and then does a run_once() to see if any events happened during the period, but we’d like something more responsive (i.e., triggers when the event actually occurs) and less poll-y feeling. I’d appreciate any advice you may have—thanks! Scott

Hello, I need to get how much memory is used by a guest system, in order to implement some monitoring function which tells me if the system is overstressed. I am currently using java apis and the binding which was suggested to me was Domain.memoryStats(); This is a binding to int virDomainMemoryStats (virDomainPtr<http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt.html#virDomainPtr>dom, virDomainMemoryStatPtr<http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt.html#virDomainMemoryStatPtr>stats, unsigned int nr_stats, unsigned int flags). Problem is that it returns me just tags 0,6 and 7. Looking at the documentation I see they are not what I am looking for...I would rather need 4 (VIR_DOMAIN_MEMORY_STAT_UNUSED) and 5 (VIR_DOMAIN_MEMORY_STAT_AVAILABLE). Is there a way to set them?

In http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementsTime , we could find there are three attributes of catchup tickpolicy: limit, threshold and slew. " The catchup element has three optional attributes, each a positive integer. The attributes are threshold, slew, and limit. " The xml format likes: <clock offset='utc'> <timer name='rtc' tickpolicy='catchup'> <catchup slew='123'/> or <catchup threshold='123'/> or <catchup limit='123'/> </timer> </clock> But there is no further explanation. The problem is that for kvm device assignment to work properly, the device needs to be reset by libvirt after detaching it from the host driver and before passing it to kvm, and these devices you are trying to reset support neither "function level reset" nor "power management reset", so libvirt must fallback to resetting the entire bus where the device is plugged in. But of course it can't do that if the bus contains other devices that are in use by the host or by other guests. If your host OS is new enough to support vfio device assignment, I would suggest using that instead (if you update to the latest upstrem libvirt it will automatically use VFIO if it is available, otherwise you can add "<driver name='vfio'/>" to the device definition to assure that it will either use vfio or fail. You will also probably need to run "modprobe vfio" before starting the guest). The reason I suggest this is that VFIO will automatically handle resetting the assigned devices whenever necessary, compared to the old KVM device assignment, where libvirt must always reset the device because it has no better information about whether or not it is really necessary. Hi all, I am trying to install libvirt from source code(I have some version of libvirt installed before and I intend to overwrite it), my workflow is shown below, #!/bin/sh apt-get install gnutls-bin libgnutls-dev -y apt-get install libxml++2.6-2 libxml++2.6-dev -y apt-get install libdevmapper-dev -y apt-get install libpciaccess-dev -y apt-get install python-dev -y apt-get install libnl-dev -y if [ ! -f ./libvirt-1.1.1 ]; then wget http://libvirt.org/sources/libvirt-1.1.1.tar.gz fi tar -xzvf ./libvirt-1.1.1.tar.gz cd ./libvirt-1.1.1 ./configure --prefix=/usr --localstatedir=/var --sysconfdir=/etc make make install I have no trouble in configure, make, and make install. However, after make installfinishing, when I type virsh --version, I get the following error message: virsh: /usr/lib/libvirt.so.0: version `LIBVIRT_PRIVATE_1.1.1' not found (required by virsh) I wonder what's wrong with that? Hi, I have being try to connect a virtual machine to the outside through a bridge on the host. The following shows that I have a bridge. So dd running on host belongs to /, but when I set cpu.shares of any VM, it wouldn't apply as I expected, because these processes are exists in different cgroups. I would like to know how much memory and cpu virtual machine are using so yes guest's perspective. I'm building a web app that has to alert the user when the vm is going to be stressed and I would like to do this in terms of mem and cpu usage.
