Hi,all,i am using libvirt to manage my vm,in these days i am testing the libvirt snapshot ,but meet some problem: the snapshot was created from this command: snapshot-create-as win7 --disk-only --diskspec vda,snapshot=external --diskspec hda,snapshot=no but when i tried to revert from the snapshot which created from the above command ,i got error below: virsh # snapshot-revert win7 1338041515 --force error: unsupported configuration: revert to external disk snapshot not supported yet version: virsh # version Compiled against library: libvir 0.9.4 Using library: libvir 0.9.4 Using API: QEMU 0.9.4 Running hypervisor: QEMU 1.0.93

Another separate thread for a slightly separate issue. For some reason, hotplugging disks does not work for me. I built my guest with ubuntu's vmbuilder. It's Precise, virtual. I have acpiphp in my /etc/modules file: $ lsmod Module Size Used by psmouse 97443 0 serio_raw 13211 0 virtio_balloon 13108 0 acpiphp 24231 0 floppy 70365 0 hotplug_pci seems to be compiled into the kernel: $ grep HOTPLUG_PCI /boot/config-3.2.0-32-virtual CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_PCIE=y CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI=y CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_FAKE=m CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI=m CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI_IBM=m CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_CPCI=y CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_CPCI_ZT5550=m CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_CPCI_GENERIC=m CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_SHPC=m But when I attach a disk, absolutely nothing happens in the guest. [libvirt-users] SCSI/IDE Devices in Guest

I'm experimenting with how to attach storage to a guest virtual machine (I sent another message to th elist about that as it's slightly different) Looking in the XML files for my virtual machine, I see this: <disk type='file' device='disk'> <driver name='qemu' type='qcow2'/> <source file='/vm/myvm/tmpeuiVc9.qcow2'/> <target dev='hda' bus='ide'/> <address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' unit='0'/> </disk> However, /dev/hda is not a device in the guest. It is /dev/sda. It's not really a problem in it's own right, but it's one of several connected things which don't make sense. Is there some explanation for this? I believe this is linked to some weirdness when I attach some extra storage like so: virsh attach-disk myvm /dev/lvm-group1/mystorage sdb --driver qemu --persistent This adds the following stanza: <disk type='block' device='disk'> <driver name='qemu' type='raw'/> <source dev='/dev/lvm-group1/mystorage'/> <target dev='sdb' bus='scsi'/> <address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' unit='1'/> </disk> Looks about right. In the guest though, it pushes /dev/sda (root and swap are here on sda1 and sda2) upto /dev/sdb (sdb1 and sdb2). Somehow it still boots correctly despite fstab referrencing /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 for / and swap. The new /dev/sda is this storage I tried to add as sdb. What could be causing this? I used omping to test multicast between 2 KVM VMs under same physical host, and it is not working in terms of multicast (normal pings/ssh works between these 2 VMs). How to enable multicast for KVM guests running under NAT networking mode under the same physical host? Per some doc from RedHat, it would be very slow using NAT with multicast for KVM. I have to use virbr0/NAT mode since I am using wireless. So although it would be slow, it should still work, but this is not the case for me.

[libvirt-users] Attaching storage to a virtual machine

I am slightly lost trying to attach some storage to a functioning virtual machine. If this where a real machine, I would simply be trying to mount a LVM volume. I have found a lot of documentation about adding storage pools, but I'm unsure if that is actually what I should be doing. Is that just for storage of the virtual machines themselves? Once I'd added my LVM volume group to virsh I could see no way of then assigning one volume of that to be offered as a logical volume to one particular virtual machine. I've also seen this: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/13/html/Virtualization_Guide/sec… Looks like I could use that to assign one of the LVM volumes in my LVM volume group to the VM. If anyone could explain the different function of these two techniques and which sounds applicable I would be most grateful. Thanks, Douglas

Hi all, When I try to start libvirtd, using "libvirtd -d", error notification shown below:error : virPidFileAcquirePath:345 : Failed to acquire pid file '/$HOME/.libvirt/libvirtd.pid': Resource temporarily unavailable Using "libvirtd -v", show: "libvirtd: error: Unable to obtain pidfile. Check /var/log/messages or run without --daemon for more info." The file "libvirtd.pid" only contains "2010" without any other infomation. I have checked that libvirtd has been installed in "/libvirt/sbin" with binary format by self-compiled. So how can I solve the problem? Or how to start libvirtd? Meanwhile, virsh can't search "libvirt-sock", because the libvirtd is not started successfully. Thanks a lot! Corey

You _can_ do NAT. Set up a different libvirt network on each machine, like this; 10.128.80.65 will have a libvirt network 192.168.65.0/24 10.128.80.66 will have a libvirt network 192.168.66.0/24 Set up each of these networks as routed networks. Hi all， I try to use gdb to debug libvirt's source code, but when I tend to create a domain with xml, it shows "error: internal error Network 'default' is not active", so I use the net-related commands as below."virsh # net-start defaulterror: Failed to start network defaulterror: Cannot open network interface control socket: Operation not permitted" Then I check my URI, which is "qemu:///session", because adding "sudo virsh". I try to change URI to "qemu:///system" by clicking "virsh # connect qemu:///system". Hi all, When I tend to use "virsh # connect qemu:///system", the debug info shown below:Failed to connect socket to '/usr/local/libvirt/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock': No such file or directory I use libvirt-bin's file "libvirt-sock" linking to the directory(usr/local/libvirt/var/run/libvirt) where virsh needs to search it, then the problem solved. But I need to debug libvirt with gdb tracing libvirt's source code, to avoid the effects of libvirt-bin, I should remove libvirt-bin. As a result, the symbolic of libvirt-sock is missed. Also I can't copy "libvirt-sock", because "cp: cannot open `/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock' for reading: No such device or address". So could you please give me some advise to add the file "libvirt-sock" after the source installation in ubuntu? Thanks a lot! Corey

Thanks, I just figured it out. It turns out that my institution issues 192. addresses to MAC addresses it doesn't recognize. I had not realized this so assumed that the IP address was coming from the VM setup somehow. Onto the next problem now! But I'll post separately about that. Hello All, I am using Centos 6.3 with libvirt 0.910 and qemu-kvm 0.12 I had to resize a qcow2 disk, and came across several issues; I used this command to resize the image: sudo -i /usr/bin/qemu-img /var/lib/libvirt/images/mydisk.img resize +100G . The disk is attached using virtio. I then tried to use parted from within the guest to resize the partition. The first problem was that the guest os did not see the increase disk size. Is there something that I need to do, to force the guest to see the higher disk size ? I got round this by re-starting the guest, but it would be better if there is some way to force the guest to see the new size. The second problem was that parted gave an error : Error: Filesystem has an incompatible feature enable. Some reading showed that this was caused by the "resize_inode" feature on the file system. I removed this feature using debugfs, and rans fsck, but parted still gave the same error: Error: Filesystem has an incompatible feature enable. I would like some advice on how this is supposed to be done. Thanks in advance. Chandana

Hi there. I'm trying to use thin provisionned LVM for som eguests, and I'm having a problem. Until now, I use LVM pool with success. Here's my pool definition: <pool type='logical'> <name>data</name> <uuid>7f18e030-9d2d-805e-c65f-d12d0681b0a9</uuid> <capacity unit='bytes'>0</capacity> <allocation unit='bytes'>0</allocation> <available unit='bytes'>0</available> <source> <name>data</name> <format type='lvm2'/> </source> <target> <path>/dev/data</path> <permissions> <mode>0700</mode> <owner>-1</owner> <group>-1</group> </permissions> </target> </pool> Everything is working, until I create a thin privisionned pool like this: lvcreate --thin data/pool -L 50G Now, as soon as this is created, I cannot refresh my pool from libvirt POV: LANG=C_ALL virsh pool-refresh data error: Failed to start pool sys error: erreur interne Child process (/sbin/vgchange -aln vg_gerard) status unexpected: exit status 5 If I remove this LV, everything is working again. I'm using libvirt 0.9.10, the default one in CentOS 6.3 (x86_64). Has anybody managed to get it working ? Is this something fixed in more recent release ? I'm using ubuntu 12.04LTS I setup a bridged network: # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp auto br0 iface br0 inet dhcp bridge_ports eth0 bridge_stp off bridge_fd 0 bridge_maxwait 0 Seems to work. Then I created a virtual machine using Ubuntu's vmbuilder tool like so: vmbuilder kvm ubuntu \ --suite 'precise' \ --flavour 'virtual' \ --arch 'amd64' \ --dest 'myvm' \ --hostname 'myvm' \ --mem '2048' \ --rootsize '4096' \ --swapsize '1024' \ --mirror 'http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu' \ --name 'MyName' \ --user 'myuser' \ --pass 'password' \ --bridge 'br0' \ --addpkg acpid \ --addpkg vim \ --addpkg openssh-server \ --addpkg avahi-daemon \ --libvirt 'qemu:///system' \ --ip '192.168.0.100' It generates fine and starts up seemingly without a problem as well when I run virsh start myvm I am then able to resolve it's IP with MDNS and try ping myvm.local So presumably the VM is running? But for some reason I can't communicate with it, I can't SSH in, I don't even get a response to my ping. Any ideas? I'd be happy to provide further information. Thanks.

It is usually a good idea to "free" the device before doing partition resizes. We had done it (resizing cow2) once and it was successful , we had to although convert from cow2 to raw , append a new dd'ed file and user fdisk over the raw image. eventually it worked. what is the size of your cow2 device if its not huge you may consider backing it up and restore to a larger device. hope it helps. mallah.

Hi, If you have a spare guest you may consider temporarily attaching the said cow2 image to that guest and use the partition tools (like parted , fdisk,cfdisk etc) and filesystem tools (like xfs_grow , resize2fs etc) to grow the filesystem. use partprobe to reread the partition table into the kernel once partition editing tools are used. re-read of mounted root partions mostly do not work for me. hence i suggested using a separte vm for the image. [libvirt-users] hypervisor driver not found

Hi, I installed Virtual box software in linux open suse. Unable to connect to the vbox hypervisor driver. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): libvirt-0.9.0 How reproducible: when i am giving the following command for virsh: virsh -connect vbox:///session then the following error is coming. error: no hypervisor driver available for vbox:///session error: failed to connect to the hypervisor Even I installed virtualbox the above error is coming. I am not able to find vbox hypervisor driver. Can anyone suggest where can i find vbox dirver. Dear all, I have observed the virsh responds slowly with "virsh list" and used "strace virsh list" will find that it is waiting on the socket. I also use "netstat |grep libvirt" and see an opened socket /var/run/libvirt-sock-ro is always on and will not disappear. Is it caused by an abnormal termination of virsh API? Otherwise, if there is any possible issue? I have checked the cpu utilization, it is low and no waiting io. Regards, Chun-Hung

Hi, I'm trying to get KVM VMs set up right on top of DRBD, with a dedicated DRBD mirror instance on top of a dedicated pair of LVM LVs per VM - allowing, for instance, primary-secondary DRBD assignments at the same granularity as the VMs. In other words, I want to put VMs in raw format directly to the DRBD block device, just as they are commonly put to an LV block device, with the DRBD block device stacked on the LV block device. DRBD is happy to stack on an LV (just as libvirt-KVM-QEMU is happy to). But when I take an existing KVM LV, set up DRBD for it (DRBD can typically be placed on a partition with an existing file system, which it inherits), and then use "virsh edit" to replace the source dev, like so: <disk type='block' device='disk'> <driver name='qemu' type='raw'/> <source dev='/dev/VolumeGroup/SomeVolume'/> <target dev='hda' bus='ide'/> <address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' unit='0'/> </disk> changing the center line to <source dev='/dev/drbd/by-res/SomeDom'/> (or /dev/drbdN - to which that's a symlink), then I get # virsh start sql error: Failed to start domain SomeDom error: unable to open disk path /dev/drbd/by-res/SomeDom: Wrong medium type If this were a normal file system, setting up DRBD with it, then remounting it through the DRBD device would work. But libvirt doesn't want to "mount" it. This is with virsh 0.9.12. I don't know what constitutes "Wrong medium type" here. I had thought it the general case that raw files for KVM can be written to block devices generally, which is what a DRBD device is, just as much as an LV device is. Is this then a case where I have to change something else in the XML? Or a case where it would work except that libvirt doesn't recognize that this is a media type that will work, yet is is, so that the answer would be to alter libvirt's source and recompile? Or would getting this scheme to work require the trouble of stacking things like VM LV VG PV DRBD LV VG PV DISK instead of simply like VM DRBD LV VG PV DISK Since there's a strict 1 VM-1 DRBD-1 LV correspondence, I'm hoping those extra layers won't be necessary to get DRBD into the stack. Hi, I am writing an application which would monitor the changes on the domain on the KVM hypervisor through libvirt events. Recently I have upgraded my libvirt from 9.4 to 9.10 and I have this issue. While *de-registering* for DomainEventDiskChangeCallback, I get a libvirt error saying 'libvirtError: internal error domain event 2 not registered;' where 2 is the callbackid returned by virConnectDomainEventRegisterAny() for the disk change event type. This error didn’t occur when I used libvirt 0.9.4-23.el6_2.6 Can you please enlighten me on the recent changes that has been made? Hi, I've been using libvirt (versions 0.9.11.5, and recently upgraded to 0.10.2), and have been attaching an SR-IOV VF to my VM with the following device configuration: <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'> <source> <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x07' slot='0x10' function='0x0'/> </source> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x05' function='0x0'/> </hostdev> I had no problems with bringing up the VM and using the VF with this configuration. Recently I noticed that I would be able to assign a mac address to the SR-IOV VF if I used the interface configuration and changed over to using: <interface type='hostdev'> <mac address='52:54:00:d3:23:4f'/> <source> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x07' slot='0x10' function='0x0'/> </source> <model type='virtio'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/> </interface> My VM fails to start up with this interface configuration. Coming off of xen environment; still testing with kvm, just a few questions: 1. What is the roadmap for release of qemu-kvm 1.1 and libvirt 0.10.2 for el6, cause I had to compile from upstream to get the latest stuff. 2. Should not virt-manager show the sparsed disk size instead of actual reserved size of a vm? 3. Where is the virsh bash_completion conf.d file from upstream; since el6 rpm for it seems have tab completion built right into virsh shell. 4. Created a disk-only snapshot of a vm CO1 called capture1 but the syntax of blockpulling seems to be opposite from what has been advertised on Fedora and other relative wikis. Check below and the error with first blockpull command. Hey, What kind of data de NodeInfo represents? With my researches I thought that it should return the data of the physical machine. But in my tests, when I run with diferents URLs in Connect creation the values of nodeInfo variables are differents. For example: it's the same machine, but if I run with xen:/// the memory is X and if I run with qemu:///session the memory is Y. [libvirt-users] attach-interface not permanent?

Hi, I just created a new interface for a running Windows 2008 guest using the attach-interface command which succeeded and I could see the interface in the guest and in the dumpxml output. Then I switched the type to virtio in virt-manager after which I got the message that this change would only appear after the next guest shutdown so I went ahead and shut down the guest. After that the new interface was gone and no longer showed up in the dumpxml output. I'm confused because at no point was it mentioned that the interface would only be added temporarily and the man-page doesn't say anything to that effect either. This happened on a fresh Centos 6.3 system. Any ideas what is going on here? Regards, Dennis

Hi, At least on 0.10.2 setting a cpuset doesn`t match a real process placement - VM still consumes all available cores. VM config: .snip. <vcpu placement='static' cpuset='0-5,12-17'>12</vcpu> .snip. for cpuset in $(find /cgroup/cpuset/libvirt/qemu/vmid/ -name cpuset.cpus) ; do grep 0-5 $cpuset ; done got: empty responce, e.g. 0-23 in my setup expected: at least bounded vcpuX threads In neighbor 'cpu' group libvirt sets cfq weights just fine, so this is clearly a bug.

I didn't see operations that show the CPU or memory usage, at least in Java binding. Are there operations like these, or we have to calculate based on lower level informations?

[libvirt-users] Create and revert to snapshot fails silently after device update on running domain

Hi list, I'm having an issue with snapshot creation. Scenario: qemu 1.1 libvirt 0.9.12 I create a domain, and start it. The domain has 1 IDE cdrom device defined (see below). When started, I want to mount an ISO file to it. So I do updateDeviceFlags in libvirt-python or update-device in virsh (both have the same problem). This works fine, the ISO image becomes available to the domain. Now I create a snapshot on the still running domain using snapshotCreateXML in libvirt-python or snapshot-create in virsh. The command returns immediately without error (a normal snapshot takes several seconds to complete). If I revert to this snapshot this command also returns immediately without error, but the snapshot is not actually reverted to, the domain remains running in the same state as if nothing had happened (I test this by verifying console output and checking if a testfile is present on the domain). If I do not use the update device commands prior to creating a snapshot, all is well. If I remove the source from the cdrom device using update device, the snapshots work properly again. Any idea what causes this? Steps to reproduce using virsh: virsh # start 4d5d722b-864c-657e-0f39-55d1bafc760e Domain 4d5d722b-864c-657e-0f39-55d1bafc760e started virsh # snapshot-create 4d5d722b-864c-657e-0f39-55d1bafc760e Domain snapshot 1348653920 created virsh # snapshot-revert 4d5d722b-864c-657e-0f39-55d1bafc760e 1348653920 All is good, the snapshot is reverted to properly. Hello I need a solution for monitoring and automatic migration of Guest vm machines. A good approach would be to determine which guests to migrate based on "trend usage algorithm". There is something in java and libvirt that could be used? I have a KVM VM that's backed by a logical volume on local disk. I'd like to copy / move it to an identically configured host. [root@virt2 cquinn]# virsh migrate --copy-storage-all --verbose --persistent node1.www qemu+ssh://10.102.1.11/system error: Unable to read from monitor: Connection reset by peer How should I effectively troubleshoot this? I'm running libvirt 0.10.2 and qemu-kvm-1.2.0, both compiled from source, on CentOS 6. I've got a working blkio cgroup hierarchy which I'm attaching guests to using the following XML guest configs: VM1 (foreground): <cputune> <shares>2048</shares> </cputune> <blkiotune> <weight>1000</weight> </blkiotune> VM2 (background): <cputune> <shares>2</shares> </cputune> <blkiotune> <weight>100</weight> </blkiotune> I've tested write throughput on the host using cgexec and dd, demonstrating that libvirt has correctly set up the cgroups: cgexec -g blkio:libvirt/qemu/foreground time dd if=/dev/zero of=trash1.img oflag=direct bs=1M count=4096 & cgexec -g blkio:libvirt/qemu/background time dd if=/dev/zero of=trash2.img oflag=direct bs=1M count=4096 & Snap from iotop, showing an 8:1 ratio (should be 10:1, but 8:1 is acceptable): Total DISK READ: 0.00 B/s | Total DISK WRITE: 91.52 M/s TID PRIO USER DISK READ DISK WRITE SWAPIN IO> COMMAND 9602 be/4 root 0.00 B/s 10.71 M/s 0.00 % 98.54 % dd if=/dev/zero of=trash2.img oflag=direct bs=1M count=4096 9601 be/4 root 0.00 B/s 80.81 M/s 0.00 % 97.76 % dd if=/dev/zero of=trash1.img oflag=direct bs=1M count=4096 Further, checking the task list inside each cgroup shows the guest's main PID, plus those of the virtio kernel threads. It's hard to tell if all the virtio kernel threads are listed, but all the ones I've hunted down appear to be there. However, when running the same dd commands inside the guests, I get roughly-equal performance - nowhere near the ~8:1 relative bandwidth enforcement I get from the host: (background ctrl-c'd right after foreground finishes, both started within 1s of each other) [ben@foreground ~]$ dd if=/dev/zero of=trash1.img oflag=direct bs=1M count=4096 4096+0 records in 4096+0 records out 4294967296 bytes (4.3 GB) copied, 104.645 s, 41.0 MB/s [ben@background ~]$ dd if=/dev/zero of=trash2.img oflag=direct bs=1M count=4096 ^C4052+0 records in 4052+0 records out 4248829952 bytes (4.2 GB) copied, 106.318 s, 40.0 MB/s I thought based on this statement: "Currently, the Block I/O subsystem does not work for buffered write operations. With cache=none, when I generate write loads inside the VMs, I do see growth in the host's buffer cache. Further, if I use non-direct I/O inside the VMs, and inflate the balloon (forcing the guest's buffer cache to flush), I don't see a corresponding drop in background throughput. Is it possible that the cache="none" directive is not being respected? Since cgroups is working for host-side processes I think my blkio subsystem is correctly set up (using cfq, group_isolation=1 etc). Maybe I miscompiled qemu, without some needed direct I/O support? Hi, After recently upgrading to 0.9.11 (as shipped with Fedora 17), I was just trying to migrate a qemu domain from one host to another (using virDomainMigrateToURI()), when I got this error message: Unsafe migration: Migration may lead to data corruption if disks use cache != none Okay, this is explainable (if a bit disappointing - I would have hoped that qemu would be able to disable disk caches before migration and then reenable them afterwards...). However, the next time I tried migrating the same domain, I got this error message after about 30 seconds: Timed out during operation: cannot acquire state change lock This looks like a bug to me - granted not a high profile one if it only happens when someone is retrying a failed migration, but still...
