hello everybody and happy new year! I am a newbie in libvirt use, and I use it mostrly throught OpenNebula. Anyway, I noticed that one of the nodes can be a destination of a livemigrate but not the source. This is the environment: 4 blades nicknamed(*) red3, red9, red10, red11, each with 8 Intel E5506 cores (@ 2.13GHz) running CentOS 5 and KVM as hyoervisor. (*) these are names I put in /etc/hosts, the DNS knows them this way Nickname DNS name -------- ----------- red3 itpsmenc038 red9 itpsmenc044 red10 itpsmenc045 red11 itpsmenc046 I can livemigrate w/o problems between any two from red9, red10 and red11, I can livemigrate from either red9, red10 or red11 to red3 but I can't livemigrate to any other blade from red3. [libvirt-users] VMware ESX 4.0 won't reboot guests.

Hi, I just compiled libvirt with ESX support. I can login just fine, list all the guests/domains but when I try to reboot or shutdown one of my guests/domains I get this error: virsh # reboot dbcluster1 error: Failed to reboot domain dbcluster1 error: internal error HTTP response code 500 for call to 'RebootGuest'. Fault: ServerFaultCode - fault.RestrictedVersion.summary And nothing happens. I'm logged in as root so it shouldn't be any permission-related problems right!? because I can reboot it just fine with the vSpehere Client on one of my Windows boxes. In vSpehere I see this in Recent Tasks after I execute the reboot command: Find entity by UUID I can't find anything about this on Google either. Does anyone know what's wrong here? Thanks, -Patric

I'm trying to migrate some XEN based environments over to KVM and I'm having a couple of issues with how I'm currently managing the storage On my Xen Server I have a bunch of LVM based partitions that are mapped into the guests as partitions rather than disks For example /dev/VIrtVG/server-home maps to /dev/sda2 which is mounted as /home in the guest. Is there a simple way to reproduce this using KVM and libvirt rather than needing enough spare space to turn each of these partitions into virtual disks. One method I've tried is using mdadm with linear to create a partition table stub but i'm a little worries about data integrity. dd if=/dev/zero of=/root/dummy.mbr count=256 losetup -f /root/dummy.mbr mdadm --build --verbose /dev/md0 --chunk=128 --level=linear --raid-devices=2 /dev/loop0 /dev/VIrtVG/server-home Then try to setup a partition table with fdisk. Good afternoon. I have a RHEL6 host, running RHEL 3.8 as a guest. The NIC is bridged. From the guest, I can ping successfully to a variety of network devices. From the host, I can ping successfully to a variety of network devices AND the guest OS. But from my workstation, I can only ping the HOST, not the guest. And it looks like the packets are being discarded. IPtables is NOT enabled on either the guest or the host (our application does not support iptables filtering - go figure). I am seeing lots of documentation for enabling outbound pings from guest, but very little about enabling inbound pings. And again, our software relies on pings for parts of its operations and validations. Any clues as to what I might have missed? Thanks, DAVID -- David A. Hello-- I'm trying to work through the last piece of the puzzle regarding dns resolution for my guests. To do so I'd like to be able to pass the following to the dnsmasq child process: -S /private.net/127.0.0.1 (as referenced in the dnsmasq man page) -S /sub.private.net/127.0.0.1 However, I cannot find any documentation that suggests the xml schema defining the virtual network supports this option. Is there a way of doing this? The ability to pass a '-q' (log queries) would be nice too for debugging purposes. My DNS setup is all working properly (as confirmed with dig & server overrides throughout the environment), but resolv.conf based resolution isn't able to find servers for either of those two domains (dnsmasq is trying to resolve them via an upstream server, which obviously fails). [libvirt-users] libvirt unavailable while a VM is in migration?

Hi, I am running libvirt 0.8.6 on qemu (kvm, really) 0.12.5. I have noticed that while a live migration is running, I cannot do anything else with libvirt -- even 'virsh list' blocks without output until the migration is almost done. (At that point 'virsh list' will dump a final screen showing the VM I just migrated as 'running'; the next run of 'virsh list' no longer displays the VM -- this is why I say "almost done".) Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Is there a fix for this coming? I would like to use the virDomainMigrateSetMaxDowntime but I'm a bit confused about how to use it. If I try to set the downtime before I call domain.migrate(), I get the error "domain is not being migrated". But I cannot call it afterwards because domain.migrate() does not return until the migration has completed. Am I meant to put the call to domain.migrate() into a separate thread of control, and then call SetMaxDowntime from my main thread after the migration has begun? How do I even know if the migration has begun? Thanks! --Igor

Hi, Im having real issues with getting a kvm guest up and running on CentOS 5.5 I have expanded the iso to a path on my system as I have been told that the -x (extra arguments) will not work with the -cdrom option, so I am now using -location, but still the extra arguments are not being picked up. Hi! Occasionally of late, I've seen a few cases where libvirtd cpu usage shoots up to 100% and stays there indefinitely. This seems to happen when a QEMU VM is starting up, although on one occasion I *think* I saw it happen after a QEMU VM was p2p-migrated. Doing strace -f -p <libvirtd pid> reveals a flood of poll() functions calls like these: [pid 1690] poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=6, events=POLLIN}, {fd=12, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}, {fd=11, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}, {fd=10, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}, {fd=9, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}, {fd=24, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}, {fd=21, events=POLLOUT}, {fd=14, events=POLLIN}, {fd=15, events=POLLIN}, {fd=16, events=POLLIN}, {fd=17, events=POLLIN}, {fd=21, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}, {fd=20, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}], 14, -1) = 1 ([{fd=21, revents=POLLOUT}]) It seems that because 1 is returned each time, libvirtd just goes crazy dealing with fd-3, but I have no idea what fd-3 is. Restarting libvirtd fixes the high load, and then everything just goes back to chugging along as usual. This is on libvirt 0.8.5 with qemu 0.12.5 on a debian Squeeze system (the libvirt is compiled by hand). I'm not sure what's causing it, whether it's a bug in my own code somehow or inside libvirtd. I'd appreciate some help on how to debug this problem further -- restarting libvirtd is kind of a pain for me, because my application, which monitors the health on the node, maintains open connections to 'qemu:///system' and would thus have to restart itself as well... --Igor

Hi, I used to use KVM for virtualisation and have now moved back to it, but I have a problem. When i used to install the guest machine with virt-install i used to use the -x "extra args" part to set the console for the install and guest, but it no longer works. [libvirt-users] Deploying libvirt with live migration

I have two physical servers: Virt1 and Virt2. I'm setting up live migration with CentOS 5.5 between the two. I've done this by NFS mounting /etc/libvirt and /var/lib/libvirt/images on both servers. This is working well for me except for one thing. I see the same list of VMs on each server (as expected), but each server (Virt1 and Virt2) are able to start the same VM at the same time. This obviously causes IP conflicts and thrashes the disk image. Is there a guide, or some suggestions for what filesystem to use for VM storage? I chose the standard ext3 on CentOS but I'm wondering if it makes more sense to look at ext4 or XFS for performance reasons? Does anyone tweak the ext3 journaling options for libvirt to speed things up? What about NFS export/mount options? What do your fstab mount lines look like? I'm writing an app and using the Python bindings for libvirt. Everything is fine but, in some cases I need to call lookupByName(). There are a lot of times when the name will not exist, I trap the exception, however I still get this message printed to stderr: libvir: QEMU error : Domain not found: no domain with matching name 'foo' Is there any way to turn this off? This is a command-line program so the extra output makes the interface confusing. I've tried re-assigning sys.stderr before calling lookupByName(), but that doesn't seem to have any affect. tia, -albert

This release has a number of updates: * Implementation of Libvirt::open_auth, Libvirt::event_register_impl * Updated Connect class, implementing conn.compare_cpu, conn.baseline_cpu, conn.domain_event_register_any, conn.domain_event_deregister_any, conn.domain_event_register, conn.domain_event_deregister, and conn.create_domain_xml. * Updated Domain class, implementing dom.get_vcpus, dom.update_device, dom.scheduler_type, dom.scheduler_parameters, dom.scheduler_parameters=, dom.num_vcpus, dom.vcpus_flags=, and dom.qemu_monitor_command. * Updated Interface class, implementing interface.free * Many potential memory leaks have been fixed. * Many bugfixes. * Documentation update of many methods, including all of the lookup methods that were missing before. With the above list, almost all of the APIs up to and including libvirt 0.8.6 are covered. There are a few that I have not yet had time to implement; you can look at the list in the README file in the source tree to see which ones are missing. If you have time, and are interested in the bindings, please give these new ones a whirl and let me know if they work for you. Note that release 0.3.0 is intended to be fully backwards compatible with release 0.2.0 and 0.1.0. If you find that they are not, or find any other problems with the ruby bindings, please report it to the libvirt development mailing list (and CC me) so that I can take a look at them. I've been getting this error ever since upgrading to libvirt 0.8.6. It happens when i use "virsh console <domain>" and then manually shut down from within the virtual serial console. Is anyone else experiencing this? -a

When I create domain using this command: virsh create dom1.xml I cannot boot the image file. Greets, I am unsure if it's a linux- or libvirt-issue: I added a 2nd virtio-disk to a kvm-based VM. The xml shows a correct "target": # first disk vda <disk type='file' device='disk'> <driver name='qemu' type='qcow2'/> <source file='/mnt/r0/vm1_vda-clone.img'/> <target dev='vda' bus='virtio'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x04' function='0x0'/> </disk> # second disk vdb <disk type='file' device='disk'> <driver name='qemu' type='qcow2'/> <source file='/mnt/r0/www3_var.img'/> <target dev='vdb' bus='virtio'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/> </disk> The VM contains Gentoo Linux, grub comes up fine, but then it flips the devices: The unpartitioned new disk is vda, therefore there is no root-fs etc ... I know my way to fix this via Live-CD or so, but I would really like to understand what happened! I'd like to keep vda as root etc. Could someone explain? libvirt-0.8.6 and qemu-kvm-0.13.0-r2 on a gentoo-host, btw. Thanks, Stefan
