I just ran into an issue where I had about 30 guests get duplicate mac addresses assigned. These were scattered across 30 different machines. Some debugging revealed that: 1) All the host machines were restarted within a couple seconds of each other 2) All the host machines had fairly similar libvirtd pids (within ~100 PIDs of each other) 3) Libvirt seeds the RNG using 'time(NULL) ^ getpid()' This perfectly explains why I saw so many duplicate mac addresses. Why is the RNG seed such a predictable value? Surely there has to be a better source of a random seed then the timestamp and the pid? The PID seems to me to be a very bad source of any randomness. I just ran a test across 60 of our hosts. 43 of them shared their PID with at least one other machine.

Hello, I have two servers where I can push VMs from one to the other by issuing the command virsh migrate --live --persistent --copy-storage-all --verbose \ test6 qemu+ssh://kvmhost2/system on kvmhost1. I can get the VM back by issuing the equivalent command on kvmhost2: virsh migrate --live --persistent --copy-storage-all --verbose \ test6 qemu+ssh://kvmhost1/system After an update (on behalf of the glibc bug) it only works for some VMs and fails for others. The error message is unhelpful: virsh --debug 4 migrate --live --persistent --copy-storage-all --verbose \ vmware-mgmt qemu+ssh://kvmhost1/system error: internal error: info migration reply was missing return status Is there a way to get a more helpful error message? migrating VMs only works for a very limited subset of the VMs on the system in the direction kvmhost2 --> kvmhost2 Stopping the VMs, copying them over to kvmhost1 and restarting still works, and I can even migrate them back. How do I debug this problem? One possible way would be to stop all VMs on kvmhost2, manually copy them to kvmhost1 and start them and afterwards reinstall all packages (or the whole Server if that doesn't help) But that would be a workaround, and I still would not know what the problem is. The system is CentOS 7.2 now and was CentOS 7.1 before the upgrade, with the qemu-kvm-rhev repo added for qemu. Hi, all. I've set up an LXC container for various Openstack admin chores, and now I'm being asked to have it used for importing qcow2 images -- on which we want to run utilities like virt-sparsify and virt-sysprep, first. Sadly, when I do that, it dies horribly, e.g., root@openstack-cli:/tmp# virt-sysprep -a cloud-image.qcow2 Examining the guest ... libguestfs: warning: supermin-helper -f checksum returned a short string Fatal error: exception Guestfs.Error("cannot find any suitable libguestfs supermin, fixed or old-style appliance on LIBGUESTFS_PATH (search path: /usr/lib/guestfs)") Is there a way around this? Or is the answer, "Don't do that in a container"? [libvirt-users] Networking issues with lxc containers in AWS EC2

I've created an EC2 AMI for AWS that essentially represents a CentOS 7 "hypervisor" image. I deploy instances of these in AWS and create an number of libvirt based lxc containers on each of these instances. The containers run fine within a single host and have no problem communicating with themselves as well as with their host, and vice versa. However, containers hosted in one EC2 instance cannot communicate with containers hosted in another EC2 instance. We've tried various tweaks with our Amazon VPC but have been unable to find a way to solve this networking issue. If I use something like VMware or KVM and create VMs using this same hypervisor image, the containers running under these VMs can communicate with with each other, even across different hosts. My real question is has anyone tried deploying EC2 images that host containers and have figured out how to successfully communicate between containers on different hosts? Peter

Has anyone seen this issue? We're running containers under CentOS 7.2 and some of these containers are reporting incorrect memory allocation in /proc/meminfo. The output below comes from a system with 32G of memory and 84GB of swap. [libvirt-users] Managing VMs across multiple physical hosts

Hello List, We’re currently managing VMs across approximately 26 physical hosts. We tend to migrate VMs around a lot to do things like spread load and keep VMs running when physical hosts are in need of package updates. Suffice it to say sometimes finding out which physical host a VM is currently running on can be a pain. Anyone know of an open source tool that will give me a snapshot of what’s running where across a list of physical hosts? Doesn’t have to be anything fancy. A command-line utility will do. Hello since I changed my hypervisor from centos 6.3 to Fedora-23 I had many problems with differents VMs. Very often once by day ( I have about 150 VM ), some VMs crash or freeze indifferently and I got messages like this on console. [<fffffffff8800a0ead>] :jbd:journal_get_write_access+0x22/0x33 ;;;; [<fffffffff800013ccd>] :ext3:ext3_dirty_inode+0x63/0x7b And so the VM is crashed and can't be accessed but often the ping command can respond Before my migration I never meet these problems, It 's strictly the same VMs between the 6.3 and fedora23 release. I just changed the parameter : <type arch='x86_64' machine='rhel-6.0.0'>hvm</type> to <type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-i440fx-2.4'>hvm</type> and do a virsh define I tried some other version of the parameters without success. and I also added a lockd manager in fedora23. If I restart the libvirtd the virsh command just hang and never remove the VM from the list. The only seems to reboot the hypervisor but all the VMs in production too. Is there a way to remove the process qemu in defunct state without reboot the hypervisor. Perhaps the probleme come from the VM parameters which have been created on 6.3 Centos and libvirt <1.0 version. Do I need to convert some other parameters ? I 'am trying to put a new hypervisor in aFailed to terminate process X with SIGKILL: Device or resource busy version level less than fedora23 perhaps a Centos 7.2 to see what 's happen and if there is a problem like mine. In the "other" LXC project (linuxcontainers.org) you can map a host's physical ethernet interface to a container, e.g. lxc.network.type = phys lxc.network.flags = up lxc.network.link = eth1 lxc.network.name = eth1 Is there an equivalent option for doing this with libvirt lxc? Peter

[libvirt-users] uefi built from tiancore via edk2 can't persist boot changes

Apologies if this has been gone over, but I believe I have checked the intertubes more than a bit..... I am using libvirt and have vms booting under an OVMF.fd to use an efi firmware. I can create vms, linux ubuntu, and they will boot up. However, everytime I reboot am I dropped into the default efi shell provide by the tianocore build. Then I must walk the FS to the booting efi app and run, in this case grubx64.efi, to actually finish booting the host. I had tried adding boot entries with efibootmgr within the OS and also bcfg with the efi shell. I get no errors when adding an entry, and the new entry shows up and I can manipulate the entry i.e. set it to next boot and the like. Soon as I reboot I get dumped back to efi shell. Am I missing something? Are the var changes not being stored? Is there someplace to look for an error perhaps? I also can use the same efi bootloader under libvirt to boot a hybrid iso. location of the efi application on the hybrid iso is /EFI/boot/bootx64.efi. Drops me right into my grub menu, after falling thru from EFI FLOPPY1 and EFI FLOPPY2 to EFI DVD So since that was/is working, tried adding that to my efi partition so it has /EFI/boot/bootx64.efi. The thinking being that since I can't add an entry, I will setup for the "known" efi boot path. [libvirt-users] Create multiple domains from single saved domain state (is UUID/name fixed?)

Hi, I would like to save a running domain (ie. disk + memory) and be able to restore it multiple times creating duplicates of the orignal domain all starting from the same state. Use case: I'm building a task-processing system for use in a CI flow. I want to run multiple VMs in parallel using the same image (always starting from the same state). And to avoid needlessly booting between each task, I would like to save (and distribute) the domain state, so that I just restore from memory. However, I can't seems to change the UUID or the name of a domain once it is saved. Nor do I seem able to rename a domain while it is running. I can obviously duplicate both the disks and the file to which I saved the domain state using "virsh save". But I seem unable to rename before I restore.. Any ideas? Could I do this with snapshots? I suspect not since I see virDomainSnapshotRedefinePrep() calling virDomainDefCheckABIStability which raises the error here: https://fossies.org/dox/libvirt-1.3.3/domain__conf_8c_source.html#l17991 Out of curiosity does anyone know what horrors might befall me if I were to remove the lines protecting against name and UUID changes? Then compile my own libvirt... The comment in the code says name can be changed, but I'm guessing I would have to change the UUID too. Does anyone see how that would create issues? Hi. I was expecting that qemu-kvm process would connect directly to iSCSI server, but https://libvirt.org/storage.html#StorageBackendISCSI says that it wants symlinks in `/dev/disk/by-path` . That suggests it relies on Linux iSCSI client that will act as mediator and create block devices. So is "iSCSI volume pools" just a convenience thing giving no performance gain compared to attaching block devices to my guest?

I think it's because db2 uses O_DIRECT to ensure consistency. I also think that O_DIRECT is not propagated to host with default cache modes in VM settings. The real problem is: when guest writes data in small blocks, host CPU becomes a bottleneck. I hava a relatively old 24-core Xeon. Hi everyone, If a VM is configured to have a console attached to it, like using http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementCharConsole Libvirt offers access to VM serial console's using the virDomainOpenConsole API[1] However, I didn't find a way to 1. list the existing connections to the console 2. kill an existing connection - without reconnecting using VIR_DOMAIN_CONSOLE_FORCE[2] Am I missing something? How can I do that? Hello, For a variety of reasons I am interested in a D-Bus interface for libvirt. Primarily for use with http://cockpit-project.org/ for which it would be very easy to write a web interface for libvirt, given a D-Bus interface for libvirt, but writing using the raw libvirt RPC protocol would require writing a new Javascript library for parsing/encoding that protocol. But there are other nice features of a D-Bus interface for libvirt, too. Does a D-Bus interface for libvirt exist? Thanks!

libvirt 1.3.3 seems to have introduced some kind of issue on CentOS 6 (no systemd). After upgrading, libvirt would take an incredibly long time to get to a state where it would actually respond to a simple 'virsh list' command. This leads to absurdly long startup times. This behavior was not present in 1.3.1. My workaround was to just recompile with '--with-firewalld=no --with-dbus=no', which seems to have worked. There's not really anything useful for libvirt to be talking to via dbus (in our environment), so no big loss there.

I have created a routed virtual network. From within the routed net, DNS requests to the dnsmasq interface virbr2 work fine. On the libvirt host, DNS requests to the dnsmasq interface virbr2 work fine. I would like to allow external hosts, on the same network as the libvirt host, to query the dnsmasq interface. However external DNS queries to the virbr2 interface time out. I ran into an odd problem today. I wanted to share it here in the hopes of maybe saving someone else some lost time. When you run libvirtd as an unprivileged user (e.g., if you target qemu:///session from a non-root account), then libvirt will open a unix domain socket in one of two places: - If XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is defined, then inside $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/libvirt/libvirt-sock - If XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is *not* defined, then inside $HOME/.cache/libvirt/libvirt-sock With a CentOS 7 system, at least, if you ssh directly into an account, XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is set. But! If you `su -` to the account from root, e.g: # su - stack Then XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is *not* set. The problem is a little subtle, because most operations you will perform will work just fine in both cases: you can query for defined but not active guests, storagep pools, volumes, and so forth without a problem and you'll get the same answer. The problem crops up when you start a guest, which results in a persistent libvirtd process. Now, depending on how you got to your account, you will either (a) talk to the persistent process, and you'll be able to see the running guests, or (b) you'll end up spawning a new ephemeral libvirtd process listening in the *other* location, and you won't see anything, and you will wonder why there is a qemu process running for your guest but it's not showing up in "virsh list" and what the heck is going on here. I don't know if there's a good solution to this, but the failure mode is really non-obvious. Is there an api for associating domain to its pool and then to its volumes? I was able to do that by iterating the pools and then iterating all its volume..., is there a better way? Hi here! How libvirt virsh solves attachment of hot plug/unplug encrytped USB devices?? We've no problems attaching full encrypted(LUKS) usb disk or memory pen to guest using virsh attach-disk command. But not working using virsh attach-device to use USB pass-through and hot plug/unplug features. USB pass-through works properly without encryption. Any procedure to make it working?, attach-disk expects for a static source (for example /dev/sdX), and we need some dynamical source assigment due USB temporal and different host target, it's why we're trying the attachment via attach-device to take advantage of plug/unplug via USB pass-through, but only works on non-encrypted usb devices. We unknow if exist any alternatively way to make attach-disk more dinamically, maybe by udev script or uuid source identification and some re-attach procedure, any recommendation?? or virsh command direct solution?? Hello everyone, I've been looking through the libvirt API to get information about memory page dirtying of VMs. I need these to aid decisions on which VM to migrate. The only thing I found is virDomainGetJobStats() with VIR_DOMAIN_JOB_MEMORY_DIRTY_RATE but that only works when a migration is already running. Hi All, Applied patch from below link in order to add ethernet network type support to LXC. https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2016-January/msg00318.html Launching LXC based VM using openstack Icehouse release which uses libvirt in background fails with below error: LOG shows "*error : virNetDevVethCreate:196 : internal error: Failed to allocate free veth pair after 10 attempts*" and also gives* ret == -1 for* *virNetDevVethCreate which depicts that "**virNetDevVethCreate" failed.* But by defining XML file manually using *virsh* *utility* I am able to launch LXC based VM successfully with network type Ethernet. *Something went wrong while launching the same with openstack nova. * Please help as I am quite new to this virtualization world. Hi,I am having an issue on several KVM hosts which run CentOs7 and libvirt-daemon-1.2.17-13.el7_2.3.x86_64 .About once a week the libvirtd hangs forever and becomes unresponsive, the only help is to restart it. I attached gdb to it and the output of it can be seen at the end of the mail. Laine from the irc channel suggests it has to do with dbus/policykit. [libvirt-users] dynamic_ownership behavior with volumes

Hi, I'm having troubles with volume ownership. When I configure domain with disk type='file', dynamic_ownership works fine, the owner of image file changes into libvirt-qemu:kvm. However when I add the image file as a libvirt volume (in default pool) and configure domain with disk type=volume, the owner of image file remains root:root. Actually, libvirt seems to be changing the owner into root:root even after I manually changed it. Is this intended behavior? If so, what is preferred way to set ownership of volume image files, instead of running qemu as root? FYI, I'm using libvirt 1.2.2 on Ubuntu 14.04. Thank you!

Hi, I'm trying to use virDomainInterfaceAddresses to get interface info for XEN DOMs but keep getting following error: libvirt: Domain Config error : this function is not supported by the connection driver: virDomainInterfaceAddresses I tried recompiling libvirt with ./configure --with-interface --with-network and it all went fine but still no luck. Am i missing something? Thanks, Marin

Hello I use lock_manager with libvirt 1.3 and I would like to know how is exactly calculate the hash SHA256. I would create a table to retreive the name with the hash in case of crash to release manualy the lock. I do an sha256 hash from /var/lib/libvirt/images/lock/MyVM.img but I don't get the same hash code form virtlockd ? Any Ideas ?
