I've just made some changes to the code however I don't have access to all the hardware/software required to test it fully. Hi I am developing tool to collect information on XenServer which is on Opensuse 11. I am using libvirt-0.4.6.jar and and jna-3.2.4 jar files. I tried to connect from Remote system(Windows) to server, but could not get the connection object. I'm wondering under what circumstances the kvm-clock source is exposed to a guest. I've got a bunch of KVM servers running Centos 5.5 and some of the guests have are defaulting to jiffies or apic whilst some are picking up kvm-clock. These guests are a mix of 32bit and 64bit Centos 5.5. Looking at the virtual machine definition file there doesn't appear to be a difference between the guests with kvm-clock and those without. Looking at the python API, once I have a domain object I can call domain.pinVcpu to pin a specific vcpu to a physical CPU. I found http://www.mail-archive.com/libvir-list@redhat.com/msg04562.html which mentioned some changes to the C API in the Python implementation, and was wondering if my understanding is correct. Say that I have a host system with 16 logical CPU's, 0-15. If I wanted to pin vcpu1 of a domain to CPUs 2 and 4, I would pass: domain.pinVcpu(1, (False, False, True, False, True, False....[and so on til I have 16 things])) In other words, pinVcpu accepts as arguments the vCPU that I wish to act on, and a 16 (or however many CPU's are present on the host) item tuple of True/False values, in the same order as the CPU's I wish to mask (for example, item 0 of the tuple represents CPU0), True meaning that the vCPU thread is allowed to run there, and False meaning that it is not. Just looking to confirm that my understanding of this call is correct. Thanks! -Jon

Hi Everyone, I am planning to extend libvirt to support sheepdog for qemu/kvm and found that storage code is placed in src/storage. Storing files in sheepdog is independent of file system and we just need to specify vm-name on qemu command ine. Here are the following comands used for creating and running a VM using qemu qemu-img create sheepdog:MyImage001 25G qemu-system-x86_64 sheepdog:MyImage001 I would appreciate if any one provide pointers on incorporating sheepdog functionality to libvirt. Hi, you are right - the problem is specific to only that one vmx file - for other virtual machines dumpxml is working, as i found out. i am using esxi 4.1.0 and virsh 0.8.4. the machine was created using vsphere client, and was cloned and renamed afterwards - maybe that was the problem ... regards, frank > > Hm, that's strange. Theory! I suspect that if you add the network interface with application that have non root privileges or you have configured /etc/access.conf. [libvirt-users] Is it possible to live migrate guest OS'es between different versions of kvm/qemu-kvm with libvirt?

Hi, I currently have a couple of Debian KVM servers with all a different version of kvm or qemu-kvm. I can live migrate a guest OS from one server to the other just fine, as long as the version of qemu-kvm is the same. However, when I try to migrate a guest to a server running a newer (or older) version of qemu-kvm, I run into problems. I think this is because the xml configuration differs slightly between version. For example, if I try to migrate from a server running qemu-kvm 0.11.0 to one running qemu-kvm 0.12.4, I get the following error: virt01:~# virsh migrate --live testserver qemu+ssh://192.168.1.7/system error: internal error unable to reserve PCI address 0:0:3 When migrating from kvm 85 to qemu-kvm 0.11.0: virt02:~# virsh migrate --live testserver qemu+ssh://192.168.1.2/system error: Unknown failure Migrating one from 0.12.4 to 0.11.0 just completely breaks libvirt, forcing me to kill -9 libvirtd and the kvm instance, etc. I believe this is caused in part because different versions of qemu-kvm need different xml configurations. To run my testserver on 0.12.4 for example, I need to delete the lines with the PCI id's, just to be able to start it. So, is there a way to make this work? Perhaps tell libvirt to not send the config file when doing a live migrate, and use the xml in /etc/libvirt/qemu instead somehow? Thanks in advance, Nils

Hi, Libvirt provides classes such as Xen_ComputerSystem, Xen_Processor etc., in order to build applications using libvirt-api which can interact with the Xen Hypervisor. I would like to know what are the corresponding classes for the KVM hypervisor, so that I can use libvirt-cim to communicate with the hypervisor. Would it be Kvm_ComputerSystem or Qemu_Computersystem? Any help in this regard would be of great help. Thanking you. Regards Ananth

Hi, I'm trying to set up a virtual machine server for our newly re-founded LUG at my school. The idea is for members to have their own virtual machine that they can learn their way around a Linux system without worry of them hosing the host system or their own computers. At home I use libvirt with my server to manage multiple virtual machines, but the issue I'm running into for this use case is user permissions. As far as I've seen, anyone who has access to the server over ssh and has access to the libvirt server via virt-manager has access to all of the virtual machines. I'd like to find some way for each user to only see their own virtual machine. Is this possible? I've considered setting up VMs myself, and giving them direct access via ssh or VNC, but I'd like them to have access to the console so that they can attach things like CD images to their VMs for reinstalling or changing distros. Is there a way to get libvirt to do what I need here? Thanks much, Zach Tibbitts

Hi, Is virsh able to access the VMX config of a virtual machine running on a esxi host? I would like to take backups of my virtual machine configs and the doku section "Converting from VMware VMX config to domain XML config" (http://libvirt.org/drvesx.html) comes close to this - but does not tell how to get access to the vmx file. Hi, I am using virConnectOpen(const char *uri) to connect to the local hypervisor. When uri is set to "lxc:///", an error gets logged in /var/log/messages about failed connection. But I do not see any error for "xen:///". The machine does not have these drivers installed, and I am using libvirt 0.6.3. My questions are - 1. Why I see error in /var/log/messages for container and not for xen? 2. Is there a way to avoid this error? Can I check for installed drivers before trying to connect? Thanks Sharad Mishra

Hello, I am trying to run SCO unix 5.0.5 with KVM. I have created the Virtual Machine with virt-manager. The installation runs correctly, but when the virtual machine reboots from hard disk, i obtain this message : "FATAL: No bootable device." If i run manually the virtual machine without the suboption "boot=on" in the "-drive" option, the virtual machine boots correctly. Why is "boot=on" preventing my VM to boot ? Is there a way to modify the .xml file for this VM to inform libvirt to not add "boot=on" ? Thanks Jean Michault.

Hi, Looking to libvirt source code questions: a) I see virt-mgr or such client invokes libvirt API which inturn connects to libvirtd on host. Is this right ? Further libvirtd invokes qemu driver callbacks which were registered when it comes up using: qemuRegister() API. Is this right ? b) If (a) is true then does is mandate that (i) libvirtd daemon need to be running on host only ? (ii) also libvirtd daemon need to be running before qemu (to register) ? c) what is the call sequence and boot up flow between libvirtd daemon and qemu ? d) can libvirtd process run in a guest ? [libvirt-users] Disabling iptables on bridge breaks port forwarding for NAT

Hi, Following the directions for setting up bridged networking in the red hat virtualization guide and libvirt wiki, I set the following kernel parameters to 0 on a RHEL 5.5 server. net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-ip6tables net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-arptables Unfortunately, doing this broke the port forwarding I'd set up for VMs on my NAT networks, e.g. iptables -I FORWARD -d 192.168.122.2 -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -m state --state NEW -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 8080 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.122.2:80 Before I run sysctl to change those values, nmap shows port 8080 as open. Afterwards, nmap shows it as filtered. Using sysctl to set those values to 1 did not undo the change, the port still showed as filtered. I had to reboot to open the port again. Creating an iptables rule to accept traffic on bridged devices, i.e. iptables -I FORWARD -m physdev --physdev-is-bridged -j ACCEPT did not not cause this problem. I am wondering if breaking the FORWARD and PREROUTING rules I set up to do port forwarding is to be expected when those net.bridge parameters are set to 1. If so, I think this should be mentioned in the libvirt wiki and red hat documentation. Hi, If I issue the commands # service libvirtd stop # service iptables stop # service iptables start # service libvirtd start the iptables rules that enable NAT on my virtual networks are not created when libvirtd is started, even though the networks are set to autostart and 'virsh net-list' shows them as active. The rules are only created if I run net-destroy and net-start. Is this the expected behavior? I would have thought that restarting libvirtd would ensure the necessary iptables rules are in place for networks marked as autostart. [libvirt-users] Status of libvirtd on BSD/OSX?

Hello, I've done some research prior to this and the answer is clear that libvirtd doesn't compile on BSD or OSX, but I'd like to know more details about this, if I can have a bit of your time: * Are there any current efforts to get libvirtd running on BSD? * What are the blockers to getting it running? * My main goal is really to, at first only control VirtualBox, so KVM/Xen/etc is not an issue. I realize that KVM and some other hypervisors obviously can't be supported on BSD, but if I could just start by compiling libvirtd for VirtualBox on BSD that would be a big win in and of itself. Hi we have a Debian 64 bit system with qemu 0.9.1-10 ( uname -a = 2.6.26-2-amd64) installed . kvm is included and loaded to memory . Still when we create a VM we sometimes get the following error message: libvir: QEMU error : internal error unable to start guest: You do not have enough space in '/dev/shm' for the 499 MB of QEMU virtual RAM. To have more space available provided you have enough RAM and swap, do as root: mount -o remount,size=515m /dev/shm Or disable the accelerator module with -no-kqemu after we do the mount we can create the VM . [libvirt-users] override DNS server address?

Is there a spot in the xml i'm not seeing to identify the network DNS server. Currently it's defaulting to a.b.c.1 I'm running my own though on a different address and can't find where to configure it in the xml schema or could I override it in DNSMASQ? Thanks Steve

Hi List, I've checked RHEL6 beta2, it's libvirt 0.8.1, but I need 0.8.3 to support vSphere 4.1, I know I can compile it by myself, but our Red Hat's customer wanna have "half official" rpm package for their test, anyone would help me to make rpm for RHEL5.5? And, do we have any roadmap about libvirt 0.8.3 to be official rpm package in RHEL6? Hello, I recently upgraded to libvirt 0.8.3 and qemu 0.12.5 and I'm seeing these messages in syslog: libvirtd: 09:52:34.591: warning : virStorageBackendQEMUImgBackingFormat:623 : Unexpected exit status '1', qemu probably failed libvirtd: 09:52:34.746: warning : qemudParsePCIDeviceStrs:1422 : Unexpected exit status '1', qemu probably failed I'm not having any problems, but I'd like to know what these mean. Hi, I want to develop an application to manage KVM virtual machines. I've been looking for something that helps me to start programming using libvirt in C/C++. The only one documentation I found is in this link: http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt.html. Neither Google has helped me! That does not look like a good way to start. So, do you know some useful C, C++ or Python tutorial for libvirt? I prefer C or C++.
