[libvirt] [PATCH] Fix python error reporting for some storage operations

In the python bindings, all vir* classes expect to be passed a virConnect object when instantiated. Before the storage stuff, these classes were only instantiated in virConnect methods, so the generator is hardcoded to pass 'self' as the connection instance to these classes. Problem is there are some methods that return pool or vol instances which aren't called from virConnect: you can lookup a storage volume's associated pool, and can lookup volumes from a pool. In these cases passing 'self' doesn't give the vir* instance a connection, so when it comes time to raise an exception crap hits the fan. Rather than rework the generator to accomodate this edge case, I just fixed the init functions for virStorage* to pull the associated connection out of the passed value if it's not a virConnect instance. This series something I was hacking on a little while back in an attempt to make our RPC layer more maintainable. There are many aspects I'm unhappy about with current code * When serializing a message we have no clue how big it will be, but xdrmem_create wants a fixed size, so we have to keep trying to serialize in a loop making it bigger each time * We don't control memory allocation/free'ing directly so we can't do a virSecureErase on fields inside the RPC message struct that handle secrets. * The XDR API is generally unpleasant to use as it is outside our virNetMessage object. Ideally we would be reading/writing directly from/to the virNetMessage buffer with APIs on virNetMessage,instead of indirectly via a XDR object. * We want more from XDR than it actually gives us. Our XDR protocol files have annotations to express what we want our code generator todo, or for ACLs. The relationship between the structs and the message numbers is implicit. Essentially we've defined our own language indirectly via comments, and then parse this with regexes which is horrid. * The code rpcgen creates is poor quality which we have to post-process to fix bugs/problems. It also lacks support for modern features like g_auto. Anyway, in a fit of rage I looked at the XDR RFC and thought.. This language is trivial, why do we need to outsource to rpcgen and libtirpc instead of dealing with it directly. This small series moves in that direction. It creates an XDR language lexer and parser, and then a code generator which emits code that is (nearly) identical to what rpcgen would emit. This is sufficient to eliminate rpcgen usage and support g_auto. Since we're still using libtirpc at this stage we can be confident we're still doing the same thing on the wire. I've got some unit tests too with the rpcgen generation to validate stuff. The next step is to change the code generator so that instead of generating code for libtirpc APIs, it will instead directly speak virNetMessage APIs. That would give us full control over our RPC stack guaranteed to be platform portable instead of fighting slight differences in RPC libraries (eg xdr_quad vs xdr_int64 madness). I was going to wait until I had written such code before sending this series, but I've got diverted onto other more important tasks. So here at least is what I have so far. After that foundation is done, we are in a place where we can actually do more innovative things. For example we can directly extend the XDR protocol language if we like, turning our magic comments into properly parsable constructs. With this, we would be in a position to replace our Perl RPC client/server dispatch code generators with something that is more supportable in Python. The python code would work with properly represented objects and formal parsers and not regexes and anonymous complex perl data structures. Daniel P. Disclaimer: I am neither an SR-IOV nor a vhost-net expert, but I've CC'd people that are who can throw tomatoes at me for getting bits wrong :-) I wanted to start a discussion about supporting vhost-net in libvirt. vhost-net has not yet been merged into qemu but I expect it will be soon so it's a good time to start this discussion. There are two modes worth supporting for vhost-net in libvirt. The first mode is where vhost-net backs to a tun/tap device. This is behaves in very much the same way that -net tap behaves in qemu today. Basically, the difference is that the virtio backend is in the kernel instead of in qemu so there should be some performance improvement. Current, libvirt invokes qemu with -net tap,fd=X where X is an already open fd to a tun/tap device. I suspect that after we merge vhost-net, libvirt could support vhost-net in this mode by just doing -net vhost,fd=X. I think the only real question for libvirt is whether to provide a user visible switch to use vhost or to just always use vhost when it's available and it makes sense. Personally, I think the later makes sense. The more interesting invocation of vhost-net though is one where the vhost-net device backs directly to a physical network card. In this mode, vhost should get considerably better performance than the current implementation. I don't know the syntax yet, but I think it's reasonable to assume that it will look something like -net tap,dev=eth0. The effect will be that eth0 is dedicated to the guest. On most modern systems, there is a small number of network devices so this model is not all that useful except when dealing with SR-IOV adapters. In that case, each physical device can be exposed as many virtual devices (VFs). There are a few restrictions here though. The biggest is that currently, you can only change the number of VFs by reloading a kernel module so it's really a parameter that must be set at startup time. I think there are a few ways libvirt could support vhost-net in this second mode. The simplest would be to introduce a new tag similar to <source network='br0'>. In fact, if you probed the device type for the network parameter, you could probably do something like <source network='eth0'> and have it Just Work. Another model would be to have libvirt see an SR-IOV adapter as a network pool whereas it handled all of the VF management. Considering how inflexible SR-IOV is today, I'm not sure whether this is the best model. Has anyone put any more thought into this problem or how this should be modeled in libvirt? This is v11 of the multifd save prototype, which focuses on saving to a single file instead of requiring multiple separate files for multifd channels. This series demonstrates a way to save and restore from a single file by using interleaved channels of a size equal to the transfer buffer size (1MB), and relying on UNIX holes to avoid wasting physical disk space due to channels of different size. I wanted to deal with https://bugzilla.redhat.com/2043498 and I got a suggesstion that removing deprecated features could actually make it easier to propagate the error. In the end (last patch) it turns out the error is still just reported with error_fatal, so it probably is not really needed, but I really wanted to dig into QEMU more and learn some of the internals for quite some time now. So I used the opportunity. The one-liner ended up being an 18 patch series which was, for someone who has just one commit in QEMU codebase, a pretty challenging task. Although I tried my best to do things properly, I am not sure whether I handled everything correctly, hence the RFC. Any comments are very much appreciated. [PATCH v2] util: basic support for VFIO variant drivers

Before a PCI device can be assigned to a guest with VFIO, that device must be bound to the vfio-pci driver rather than to the device's normal driver. The vfio-pci driver provides APIs that permit QEMU to perform all the necessary operations to make the device accessible to the guest. There has been kernel work recently to support vendor/device-specific VFIO variant drivers that provide the basic vfio-pci driver functionality while adding support for device-specific operations (for example these device-specific drivers are planned to support live migration of certain devices). All that will be needed to make this functionality available will be to bind the new vendor-specific driver to the device (rather than the generic vfio-pci driver, which will continue to work just without the extra functionality). But until now libvirt has required that all PCI devices being assigned to a guest with VFIO specifically have the "vfio-pci" driver bound to the device. So even if the user manually binds a shiny new vendor-specific vfio variant driver to the device (and puts "managed='no'" in the config to prevent libvirt from changing the binding), libvirt will just fail during startup of the guest (or during hotplug) because the driver bound to the device isn't exactly "vfio-pci". This patch loosens that restriction a bit - rather than requiring that the device be bound to "vfio-pci", it also checks if the drivername contains the string "vfio" at all, and in this case allows the operation to continue. If the driver is in fact a VFIO variant, then the assignment will succeed, but if it is not a VFIO variant then QEMU will fail (and report the error back to libvirt). In the near future (possibly by kernel 6.0) there will be a formal method of identifying a VFIO variant driver by looking in sysfs; in the meantime the inexact, but simple, method in this patch will allow users of the few existing VFIO variant drivers (and developers of new VFIO variant drivers) to use their new drivers without needing to remove libvirt from their setup - they can simply pre-bind the device to the new driver, then use "managed='no'" in their libvirt config. NB: this patch does *not* handle automatically determining the proper vendor-specific driver and binding to it in the case of "managed='yes'". This will be implemented later when there is a widely available driver / device combo we can use for testing. The first part of the series is a straightforward replacement of '-no-acpi' by '-machine acpi=on/off' based on configuration. '-no-acpi' was recently deprecated by qemu thus we must adapt. The second part of this series fixes the use of ACPI (or lack thereof) for ARM machine types which don't support ACPI. We'll break such commandline by adding '-no-acpi' due to historical baggage. The second part is RFC as it's based on a qemu patch I'll be posting along this series. This posting will also illustrate to qemu devs how libvirt itends to use the added information. I'll post the link to the qemu patch once I submit it. Hi, Fedora Rawhide for RISC-V requires '-bios none' to properly boot because its kernel is overwriting the default OpenSBI binary QEMU uses, causing the following error: $ sudo ./run tools/virsh start --console riscv-fedora error: Failed to start domain 'riscv-fedora' error: internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor: 2023-03-20T17:31:02.650862Z qemu-system-riscv64: Some ROM regions are overlapping These ROM regions might have been loaded by direct user request or by default. They could be BIOS/firmware images, a guest kernel, initrd or some other file loaded into guest memory. Check whether you intended to load all this guest code, and whether it has been built to load to the correct addresses. Other archs, such as PPC64 pseries, also requires "-bios none" if the user wants QEMU to not load any default firmware. At this moment libvirt doesn't support this option in the official API, meaning we need to go to the <qemu:commandline> route to allow the domain to boot, tainting it. And with a chance of weird interactions with firmware autoselect. These patches add official XML support for '-bios none' for QEMU domains using a XML as follows: <os> <loader type='none'/> (...) </os> The pre-conditions of this format are (1) no loader->path and (2) only manual autoselect. Everything else is already covered by libvirt as corner cases of existing firmware features. The command line option '-singlestep' and its HMP equivalent the 'singlestep' command are very confusingly named, because they have nothing to do with single-stepping the guest (either via the gdb stub or by emulation of guest CPU architectural debug facilities). What they actually do is put TCG into a mode where it puts only one guest instruction into each translation block. This is useful for some circumstances such as when you want the -d debug logging to be easier to interpret, or if you have a finicky guest binary that wants to see interrupts delivered at something other than the end of a basic block. The confusing name is made worse by the fact that our documentation for these is so minimal as to be useless for telling users what they really do. This series: * changes the command line interface: for user-mode emulators, the new option is '-one-insn-per-tb', and for system mode emulators it is a TCG accel property '-accel tcg,one-insn-per-tb=on' * updates all the places which currently directly touch the 'singlestep' global variable to instead get the current accelerator and query/set the QOM property (except the one internal to TCG itself in curr_cflags()) * documents that the old -singlestep option is deprecated * adds a new HMP command 'one-insn-per-tb', and deprecates the old 'singlestep' command. (Strictly we don't need to deprecate HMP commands, but I'd already written the code for v1 of this series and it's a minor user convenience.) * moves the 'is one-insn-per-tb on?' info from 'info status' to 'info jit' * deprecates the 'singlestep' member of the QMP StatusInfo type, with no replacement. (We have a sketch of a design of how we might provide this in QMP if we need to, but I'm pretty sure nobody using QMP is actually using the info in the 'singlestep' field, especially since it's always been wrongly documented and there's no write interface, only a read one.) I have just tagged v9.3.0-rc1 in the repository and pushed signed tarballs and source RPMs to https://libvirt.org/sources/ Please give the release candidate some testing and in case you find a serious issue which should have a fix in the upcoming release, feel free to reply to this thread to make sure the issue is more visible. [libvirt PATCH] meson: Check usability of linux/kvm.h

This fixes cross-building in some scenarios. Specifically, when building for armv7l on x86_64, has_header() will see the x86_64 version of the header and consider it usable. Later, when an attempt is made to actually use it, the compiler will quickly realize that things can't quite work. The reason why we haven't hit this in our CI is that we only ever install the foreign version of header files. When building the Debian package, however, some of the Debian-specific tooling will bring in the native version of the Linux headers in addition to the foreign one, causing Meson to misreport the header's availability status.
