[libvirt-users] renaming a domain
by Roberto Attias (rattias)
Hello,
In my system a VM with a given domain name is defined and started. At a
certain point I will define and start a new VM, with a different name. I
then want to dispose of the old VM and rename the new one to the old
one. Unfortunately I didn't find any API to do the last step. Is it
possible to change the domain name of a running VM?
Thanks,
Roberto

[libvirt-users] Running LXC instance as a non-root user
by Dong-In David Kang
Hello,
I'm new to this mailing list.
I have a question on running an LXC instance from libvirt as a non-root user.
I saw libvirt can launch a QEMU instance as a non-root user by editing /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf configuration file via the user=$USERNAME and group=$GROUPNAME parameters.
But, I could not find such options for LXC.
Is there a way to run an LXC instance as a non-root user?
If it is not possible, then could I run libivrtd itself as a non-root user?
Thanks,
David.

[libvirt-users] virsh modified option... alternative..
by vmnode guy
Hi All,
I am new to libvirt, i wander how we can achieve below objective, i
read through a lot from libvirt.org but couldn't found any thing solid
something equivalent to this:-
virsh dumpxml dom > /tmp/dom.xml
$EDITOR /tmp/dom.xml && virsh define /tmp/dom.xml
What i try to achieve is to have one management server that install
with libvirt in place then we can use libvirt to connect to other
libvirt box to provision the vm-create, vm-delete & capable to
vm-modified the CPU,MEM,HDD,boot sequence, vnc password attached &
detech network card..on the targeted VM.
Currently we do it through editing the xml file which was a bit pain to do so..

[libvirt-users] Identifying proper CPU type
by Alex
Hi,
I've been working on trying to figure out why my virtual machine keeps
crashing when I don't believe I have a hardware problem, and I believe
I might know why. As I'm relatively new to this, I believe I may have
misconfigured the XML file to try and maximize the CPU features that
are available to the guest from the host.
I have an Intel Xeon E3-1240 3.3Ghz quad-core. How can I properly
configure the XML file to transparently make available as many of the
CPU features as possible to the guest?
I have read cpu_map.xml, and my processor has more capabilities than
anything listed. I've now configured the <cpu> section to read as
follows:
<cpu>
<topology sockets='1' cores='4' threads='2'/>
</cpu>
The guest processor still seems to indicate there is only one core,
despite there being 7 processors? Below is the cpuinfo from the host,
followed by that of the guest:

[libvirt-users] general protection and other errors
by Alex
Hi,
I'm having a problem with a fedora15 x86_64 host with a fedora15
x86_64 guest on a Xeon E3-1240 with 8GB RAM on the guest. This is the
only guest. The server is configured as a mail server, using
spamassassin, postfix, amavisd, and clamav.
It was previously running without error on different hardware. I
migrated the disks to a more powerful server due to load. It's a new
server, and has been stress tested with memtest86, mprime, and
passmark's Linux test for more than 24 hours without producing a
problem.
However, when I run the kvm vm, I receive a bunch of errors similar to
these on the guest:
[169245.360511] clamscan[27448] general protection ip:7f125f2e6ffb
sp:7fff117566f0 error:0 in libclamav.so.6.1.11[7f125f229000+9ce000]
[29016.445470] clamd[1110] general protection ip:30df2c3981
sp:7fffa08f4fe0 error:0 in libclamav.so.6.1
.11[30df200000+9ce000]
There are other applications, such as pyzor, that produce similar errors.
Is this something that could be a result of some software
configuration error I've made? Is there something I can do to debug
this further? There also aren't any errors on the host indicating a
kernel problem or hardware issue.
Is it possible this is a known error?
I was previously trying to improve IO performance by using 'block'
instead of 'file' for the device, but had to abandon that idea because
it didn't work and I had to concentrate on this problem.
Could disabling the cache (cache=none) cause this?
I've included some info below, in hopes someone could guide me towards
a solution.
